Principal’s Reflection

It has been very encouraging to see the energy behind ‘Anti-Bullying’ coming from the highest levels of both State and National Governments recently. It is not uncommon to be asked by new parents at enrolment interviews, “Is there any bullying at Shalom?” I always answer that there is. In my experience, wherever you put humans together, some will try to exert some imbalance of power. I go on to say to parents that, in general, Shalom is a very safe environment for young people. The biggest obstacle I and the staff here have in confronting and appropriately dealing with bullying is that hugely mis-placed belief that, “if I say something about this, it will make things worse”. Bullies love that! At Shalom, we need to teach our young people how to be confident enough to say to someone who is giving them a hard time, something along the lines of, “Back off mate. I don’t appreciate those comments.” If that doesn’t work, they need to speak to their House Coordinator, Mrs Austin-Campbell, Mr Robinson or me. Once we know that bullying is occurring, most times, it is relatively easy to fix. That said, it is super important to be told again, if the bully ignores the first warning and the behaviour continues. We can’t deal with behaviour we are not told about.

Mutual respect is one of our core Gospel values at Shalom. Jesus didn’t talk about just being nice to your mates but treating even your enemies well. I hope students here won’t have many ‘enemies’ but there will be those with whom they might not develop much of a friendship. Everyone needs and deserves to be treated with respect and, if that doesn’t happen on a regular basis, we have an issue that needs to be addressed. Please seek our support if your child ever finds themselves in such a situation.

Bundaberg Schools Swimming Carnival – it was nice to win this Carnival last week with a very strong performance by our swimmers. It was even better to watch some of the more outstanding efforts of the night.

Slade Pearce (Yr 7 McAuley) wasn’t able to participate in his 12 Yrs Relay because one of the members didn’t arrive at the carnival. It was discovered that our Open Boys Relay was in the same boat – one of their swimmers didn’t show. Slade was asked to participate in the Open Boys relay and was happy to do so. He got smashed in his 50m but the other three Open Boys (Connor Simms, William Wood and Jordan Winning) really dug deep and finished 2nd in the event. It was a very ‘gutsy’ effort from all concerned.

Our U/16 Girls Relay (Jasmine Dooley, Rachel McDonald, Briannon Phillips and Liliana McLennan) who were facing two Australian ranked swimmers in the Bundaberg State High School team, were never intimidated and swam their hearts out to win the event!

We had a number of wonderful swims on the night with a number of longstanding records broken. Mr Gills will, I’m sure, give a fuller account of a great carnival later. It is courage and character like that displayed by so many of our students on the night that makes Shalom a great community.

Academic Culture is a very positive aspect of Shalom. Students are encouraged and supported to strive for excellence in whatever it is that they are good at and have a passion for. It was nice to have that acknowledged last week when I received a letter from Mr Andrew Laming MP who Chairs the Federal Standing Committee on Education. Mr Laming pointed out in comments quoted by the media that schools have the ability, if they want to, to artificially inflate their OP scores by aggressively reducing the number of students who are eligible to receive an OP.

Open Day on Friday – this will commence at 9:30am in the Theatre. It is a great opportunity for prospective parents and students to have a look at how Shalom operates on an ordinary day. It might be a chance for current parents to have a look at the school in operation. All are welcome.

Catholic Schools Race Day is a great event on the calendar. This year it will be on St Patrick’s Day, March 17. Tickets are selling well. It is always a great day to dress up and socialize. All proceeds go to the four Catholic schools in Bundaberg.

Chelsea Stutchbury (Snr Chisholm 2014) is one of our very talented and courageous past students. Chelsea, in her Senior year, faced really significant health challenges battling cancer. Happily, Chelsea is now really well and recently launched a CD, with two new singles ‘Heartstrings’ and ‘Daughters of the Water’ at the National Breast Cancer Foundation Dinner in Sydney a couple of weeks ago.

Certificate III Early Childhood Education and Care

Shalom, in partnership with TAFE Queensland East Coast, is delivering the Certificate III Early Childhood Education and Care Course for the first time at the College this year. Positive feedback has been received from the eighteen students enrolled who are enjoying learning industry workplace skills.

Bond University Visit

Quiet Achiever

Alexandre Sutherland is a constant support for the House Captains and myself in Chisholm. All students of the house can see the effort he puts into making Chisholm a better place for staff and students. He contributes to all events, regularly organises sections of assemblies, carnivals and supports all junior students when he can. Alexandre is dedicated, hardworking and positive in all aspects of College life. He does not ask for thanks, just goes about his endeavours with respect and humility.

A reminder that our first concert for the year will be Tuesday March 13 staring at 7:00pm. Students are to wear performance uniform if they have one, otherwise wear day uniform – this should only apply to new students to Shalom this year.

Payments can now be made through Parent Lounge.

On Parent Lounge, select the TAB ‘Make a Payment’, choose ‘Tours and Excursions’, accept the invitation and follow the prompts for payment by credit card.

This is our preferred method of payment, however, payments of $15 may also be made to the Finance Office.

Bundaberg Music Eisteddfod

The entry box for the 2018 Bundaberg Music Eisteddfod is now at Inspirations Paint and Colour Centre. Entries close on Friday March 23. Please note that no late entries will be accepted, (this message was sent to me by the Bundaberg Eisteddfod committee).

Performance Uniforms

Could all year 7 and other new students in the instrumental/choral music program please go to the uniform shop as soon as possible for sizing of the vest. Mrs Stephenson needs to finalise the sizing’s as soon as possible so that an order can be placed. She will also advise where the shirt and black pants can be purchased.

ROSA

The ROSA (Recognition of Student Application) award for Middle School students recognises student application to their studies. We value the importance of acknowledging students who are motivated, show perseverance and work diligently to reach their potential. Each student has their own achievable goals and therefore a different definition of success.

There are many ways we regularly encourage and reward the efforts of our students. The ROSA award allows for more of our students to be recognised amongst their peers. At the beginning of Term 2, two students from each class subject in Years 7, 8 and 9 will receive a ROSA award presented on House Assembly. The awarded students will have their name published in the Shalom Newsletter.

Middle School Matters

It has reached that time of term where students begin working on a culminating assessment task to demonstrate to their teachers what they know and can do in relation to the topic of study. In year 8 the theme for the Term has been ‘Environment’ and students are exploring many different aspects of this theme. Students have the opportunity for a hands-on experience of being a Geographer in the field, with an upcoming excursion to investigate the coastal landforms at Elliott Heads and an assessment task focused on identifying and justifying management strategies for the area. In English, students are creating multimodal presentations featuring poems about the environment, including poems that explore topics such as environmental degradation. They are aiming to link their multimodal creations to the poetic structure and devices used in the selected poem and therefore enhance the meaning of the poem.

Here, Ms Wendy Davis’ year 8 students are working with their poems, annotating the key poetic devices and identifying the aspects of the poem they will try to enhance in their multimodal. This is an important early step in ultimately creating an interesting and engaging multimodal.

Shalom QISSN update

Congratulations to all girls who participated in the trials for the Shalom Queensland Independent Secondary Schools Netball team, the job of the selectors was made difficult due to the high calibre of game play.

Thanks must go to Ms Tracy Riley, Wide Bay Thundercats coach, who travelled from Maryborough to assist in selecting the team, as well as Mrs Maryann Parton, Mrs Kelli Cory and Mrs Melinda Pearson for also being on the selection panel. Kasey Hess, Courtney Stupart and Sarah Nash also volunteered their time to help umpire over the two afternoons.

The following girls have been named in the teams and will be competing in Townsville in the July school holidays.

The following girls were named as shadow players: Georgia O’Sullivan, Nicola Johnson, Chelsea Brooks and Sarah Nash.

Training will continue until the end of week 8 to be held on a Tuesday and Thursday morning at 7am in the Sports centre. From next term training will be on a Tuesday and Friday morning.

We will be approaching previous sponsors to assist us in minimising cost for students, however if you know of a business that would like to sponsor the 2018 QISSN team please contact either Mr Simon Gills or myself.

Connor Simms and Tailah O’Shea with the Swimming Champion School Trophy

Connor Simms (17-19 years’ boys), sisters Jaime and Taylah Krueger, in 14 and 11-12 years’ girls respectively, and Caiden Everingham (11-12 years’ boys) took out age championships, while Tobias Street was joint-winner of 15 years’ boys’ title as Shalom reclaimed the Bundaberg and District Secondary Schools Champion School Shield at Norville Pool last Monday night for the first time since 2012. After being runner-up to St Luke’s for the previous five years, our team produced a magnificent performance to amass 1,532 points to beat St Luke’s 1,417, with Bundaberg State High School third on 1,136 points.

Connor clocked 24.52sec in the boys 17-19 years 50m freestyle to shave .49sec off Matt Davis’ 2013 record, and also triumphed in 50m breaststroke, 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly. Connor was also second in the boys 17-19 years 200m freestyle relay, together with Jordan Winning, 12yr old Slade Pearce and William Wood and the 200m medley relay with Jordan, William and Aedan Leslie.

Jaime and Taylah also completed clean sweeps of all four strokes. Jaime also teamed with Rachel Findlay-Udris, Hope Jarvis and Zali Haster to take out the girls 14 years 200m freestyle relay, and Olivia Zunker, Baylee Holden and Sarah Nash to blitz their rivals in the girls 14-15 years 200m medley relay.

Taylah joined forces with Piper Murdoch, Amber Meech and Emily Manski to win the 11-12 years 200m freestyle relay in a record of 2:30.55, slashing a hefty 5.95sec off the previous mark, and Tyla Royan, Bonnie Stephenson and Bailey Grigg to reign supreme in the girls 11-13 years 200m medley relay.

Caiden was also victorious in all four strokes and linked with Connor Patterson, Carter Lascelles and Lachlan Stevenson to clinch the boys 11-13 years 200m Medley relay.

Tobias rewrote the record in the boys’ 15 years 50m breaststroke, stopping the clock at 34sec to prune .74sec off Dwight Hellings’ long-standing mark from 2000, and was runner-up in 50m freestyle, 50m backstroke and 50m butterfly. Additionally, Tobias combined with Lachlan Harris, Geordan Zunker and Benjamin Wood to beat all comers in the boys 15 years 200m freestyle relay, and Lachlan, Geordan and Fletcher Ace to put their stamp on the boys 14-15 years 200m medley relay.

Sarah Nash also notched dual individual success in the girls 15 years 50m breaststroke and 50m butterfly, while Baylee Holden took out the girls 15 years 50m freestyle.

Shalom also claimed four other relay titles, boys 16 years 200m freestyle (Ky Woods, Thomas Pascoe, Jake Bonus, Aeden Leslie), girls 16 years 200m freestyle (Jasmine Dooley, Rachel McDonald, Briannon Phillips, Liliana McLennan), boys 14 years 200m freestyle (William Zahn, Oliver Collins, Kobee McLennan, Fletcher Ace), and girls 13 years 200m freestyle (Jordan Burridge, Bonnie Stephenson, Tyla Royan, Bailey Grigg).

Although there has been no BDSSS cricket yet due to 3 cancellations because of the weather, Shalom players have been excelling with Angus McDonald, Brendan Grills, Matthew Jackson and Adam Pozzebon the only Bundaberg players chosen in the Wide Bay 19 years team which is currently competing at the state championships in Toowoomba and Louis Myers-Macdonnell named as shadow player. Brendan, Matthew and Edward Ryan also did brilliantly fielding for the Queensland Bulls Masters team in their T20 game in front of a crowd of around 1300 at Salter Oval including Brendan taking a sensational outfield catch off the bowling of Andrew Symonds while Hayden Wessel was also involved with the Bulls Masters as their team attendant. Former Shalom Students Dean Krebs and Sam Pearson also excelled as opening bowlers for the Bundaberg team. Brendan Grills capped a big 3 days by taking out the Wide Bay Cricket under-16 Player of the Year award. Many Shalom students also represented Bundaberg in the Wide Bay junior finals while twins Patrick and Beau Marshman filled in for South Burnett in under-12 and both did very well, each taking some superb catches, claiming wickets and making valuable runs

Girls 7/8 Red team defeated Rosedale 14-0

Most valuable players were Holly Stone and Taylor Driver.

Thanks to Coach Jade Tarawhiti, Shalom red team was dominant in both attack and defence and Holly Stone ran from acting half to set up many touchdowns and Taylor Driver cut through the defence with her quick feet and agility.

Girls 9/10 Red Team defeated Kepnock 12-1

Most valuable players were Ella Hagen-Jenkins and Hannah Leggett

Ella scored from the first start of play within 6 seconds and dominated the game throughout with her speed and game awareness. Hannah’s go forward from the changeover was instrumental in the whole team dominating the game and her running off the ball created many touchdowns for the team.

Year 7/8 Boys RED defeated Kepnock 5-1

What a great way to end the team’s first game of the Summer Sport season. After a much anticipated start, Shalom were ready to go. The attack from the entire team was sensational, with all players working well together to make valuable yards on each set. This really put Kepnock on the back foot as Shalom were able to contain the opposition within their own half for much of the game. The boys were able to spread the ball across the field in attack and create gaps in Kepnock's defensive line to capitalise and score tries.

Outstanding performances came from excellent play by Dawson Hess and Paddy O'Donnell.

Open Girls’ Volleyball results 28 February 2018

The Shalom 1 open girls’ volleyball team had an epic battle on their hands going down courageously 2 sets to 1 in a tight battle against Bundaberg State High School 1. In a gritty team effort led by Jessica Lane, Shalom was just pipped at the post in the final set. The highlight of the game was the step up in the overall match play, with many exciting rallies both won and lost. Another great team effort.

Congratulations to Matthew Otto and Nathan Donaldson this week both being named to compete for Qld at the Australian Junior Championships later this month. Matthew will compete in the U18 100m event after winning gold at the recent State Championships and Nathan will compete in the T34 class for the 100m, 200m and 400m events.

Last week several students were acknowledged for their success in Oztag. Added to that list, is Thomas Morcom. Thomas also gained selection in the U12 Qld Country Mavericks that will compete at the State Championships in June

McAuley House Movie Night

Science and Mathematics Competitions for 2018

This year Shalom College students have the opportunity to participate in the following national and international competitions:

ICAS Science Competition: Tuesday May 29
Australian Mathematics Competition: Thursday August 9

Students are assessed against other students in the same school year, state and country. The competitions are designed to be a fun event, removed from the pressures of formal assessment with problems and questions designed to stimulate the interest of students. All students receive a certificate showing their level of achievement and a detailed report outlining their performance.

If your student would like to participate in either the ICAS Science Competition or the Australian Mathematics competition parents need to complete the appropriate nomination form and students’ then submit it to student reception. Parents are encouraged to make the required payment online through Tours and Excursions in the Parent Lounge Portal by Friday April 20.

Shalom’s MAKERSPACE room is here!

Makerspaces are taking over the educational world and with good reason. They are the perfect spaces to support Project Based Learning through hands-on, interactive activities. They support innovation, creativity, critical thinking and communication skills in our students.

MAKERSPACE will begin by opening 3 lunch times a week:

MAKER MONDAY – Where you can make wearables and other cool stuff.
LOW TECH TUESDAY – build things using all sorts of materials.
HIGH TECH THURSDAY - coding, robotics, flight simulation, building and making.

The MAKERSPACE room is located in the Goondeel Resource Centre. We look forward to seeing students connecting and creating in this exciting new space.

Angels Community Group

Angels Community Group is a local charity organisation that provides an outstanding array of services that fly under the radar of most of the Bundaberg population.

They have given support in assisting Shalom College students with work placements and work-ready training opportunities, so now it is our turn to support their most recent project. If there are any members of the Shalom Community who can assist, your support would be most appreciated.

CALLING ALL TRADIES/BUSINESSES!

Next month Angels Community Group will be launching their new community project that will see the conversion of a second-hand caravan into a mobile commercial kitchen, known as the AngelCart Community Kitchen.

Once completed, the AngelCart will provide many benefits to the local community. Although some funding has been provided to undertake the project, further assistance is still needed.

We are calling on any local tradies/businesses who would like to get involved by donating their time or any leftover/unwanted building materials such as sheeting, wall and flooring materials, screws, plumbing accessories, paint, electrical appliances etc.

Not only will you be recognised through AngelCart promotion, but more importantly, you will also be supporting a local community project that will make a huge difference in the lives of those people who need it the most.
