Principal’s Reflection

I came across this story about a remarkable young lady, written by Emillie Ng, in the magazine, “Australian Catholics: Schools Edition Autumn 2018”. The title of this edition is “Prophetic Voices”, aptly named on reading about Olivia Hargroder, a 2017 graduate from Southern Cross Catholic College, Scarborough, in Brisbane’s north and one of four finalists for the Queensland Young Australian of the Year.

Never expected to speak because she has Down Syndrome, Olivia has become a much sought-after public speaker on issues that affect those with Down Syndrome. In 2015 she spoke at a national teachers’ conference and then in 2017 Olivia addressed the 12th World Down Syndrome Day conference at the United Nations Headquarters in New York. Her address can be viewed on line.

After this, Olivia then wanted greater inclusion of Down Syndrome athletes in the Paralympics.

“Olivia convinced the International Federation for sport for para-athletes with an intellectual impairment to trial a Down Syndrome category at the global games in Mexico last year,” Emillie stated.

Olivia is a swimmer - her event the 50m butterfly. She has qualified for the Queensland team heading for the Adelaide Special Olympics this year even though she requires medical treatment for her heart and knees.

I thought this story both moving and yet motivating and one from which we could all draw inspiration.

To quote Olivia, “Just go with your heart and work and work and work until you get to that dream...”

On that note congratulations are in order for Nathan Donaldson, Matthew Otto, Connor Simms and Jamie Krueger....their feats are detailed in this newsletter.

I have sent out an email to the Year 12 students requesting that anyone with outstanding forms regarding invitations need to have them back by Tuesday afternoon at the latest. We are needing to get this information to the printer as soon as possible. We have quite a number of deadlines to meet, this being the first.

Year 10 Camp Schedule

Shalom College After School Activities (SCASA) Term 2

In Term 2 Shalom College will continue offering students the opportunity to participate in organised after school activities conducted by coaches and teachers. SCASA also includes a light afternoon tea from 3:15pm for the students and all activities will conclude at 4:45pm.

Days

Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays are the 3 available afternoons for SCASA.

(Wednesday is allocated for BDSSS inter school sport and Fridays is not offered due to student fatigue and early departure for weekends affecting attendance)

Dates

SCASA commences in Week 2 of each Term and continues for 8 continuous weeks of each Term.

Times

3:00pm - School lessons completed.
3:15pm - Roll Call and afternoon tea (supplied) at College tuckshop and set up time for coaches
3:30pm - Activities/ Coaching starts (various venues within school grounds)
4:30pm - Activities/ Coaching finished
4:45pm - Students help pack up and return equipment and picked up by parents at school.

Cost

The SCASA fee is $20.00 per term for students ( to be placed on the student account - to pay later)

This is to help cover the afternoon tea and instructors/coach costs.

This flat fee of $20.00 is for one, two or all three afternoons activities. This is to encourage participation in the program.

Option 3 - Athletics (Track and Field) with Mr Ben Porter. (Oval)

*ABC’S = Agility, Balance, Coordination and Speed activities in a fun game centred friendly atmosphere.

Other school sporting teams will continue to have their own training sessions as usual under the direction of their coaches e.g. Rugby League, Netball, AFL, School Gym, Volleyball, Touch Football etc. This program is giving extra opportunities for more students to become involved in physical activities and sports after school.

Please complete student and parent details in the google form below REMINDER - no confirming phone calls are made by the school to confirm you are in the program - as once you sign on and you receive an online response - your child has been registered and please turn up starting week 2. Once an activity is full - I will omit it from the selections - so it cannot be selected.

Bus Trial Term 2

From Term 2 we are trialling a bus run after SCASA thanks to Duffy’s Buses

Bus Details are as follows:

Duffys Shuttle Bus 1

Departs Shalom at 4:45pm – travels to Stockland Shopping Centre/Sugarland
Arrives at Stockland 4:55pm - Commonwealth Bank end

If going to Bargara, students catch the Bargara bus departing Stockland/Sugarland at 5:00pm, which goes along Bargara Road to the Bargara Shopping Centre and continues along to Innes Park North as per normal bus run.

After the Shuttle bus drops students at Stockland/Sugarland the Shuttle bus will then continue to Hinkler Shopping Centre by 5:05pm

Then the Shuttle bus continues along Woongarra Street stopping at the Civic Centre bus stop; Suncorp Building bus stop and then the Target Store bus stop.

Cost will be normal school fare of $1.40

If you already have a bus card, you can use that card.

Schools in Myanmar, Kiribati, Kenya and elsewhere are requesting teachers to provide mentoring opportunities for local educators. Sharing your skills will improve processes and procedures vital to building their long-term personnel and organisational capacity.

Effective skill exchange is best assisted by those who volunteer for two years, but requesting communities do accept that some are only available for 12 months. Your cultural immersion will assist sustainable poverty reduction and provide the vocational fulfilment of a lifetime in relationships of understanding, acceptance and care.

For 58 years the Catholic mission and development agency, Palms Australia, have been matching the skills of those who volunteer with the skills requested by receiving communities. Year 7, 8 and 9 Core Studies Learner Conferences

(Formerly Parent/Teacher Interviews)

The first of two opportunities this year for Year 7, 8 and 9 Core Studies learner conferences will be available on Friday April 27. The aim of the learner conferences is to provide an opportunity for parents to meet with teachers to discuss the progress and learning needs of their children.

Learner conferences are for Year 7, 8 and 9 Core Studies only and will be held in the Sports Centre on the day from 8:10am to 3:00pm. Interviews will be of ten minutes duration. Students are encouraged to attend and participate in the conference as this is a Student Free Day for Years 7, 8 and 9. Your child’s progress is crucial to all of us and it is a significant benefit in this process if your child can be a part of the discussion.

Core Studies learner conferences may be arranged online via the Parent Lounge at any time from 8:00am Tuesday April 17 until 3:00pm Tuesday April 24. A letter outlining this procedure is available via the link below. Parents without internet access may contact the College on 4155 8111 to make appointments from 8:00am on Tuesday April 17.

Interim Semester 1 Reports

Interim Semester 1 reports will be published to the Parent Lounge on Friday April 20 (end of the first week of Term 2). The report can be viewed and printed from the Parent Lounge by selecting the ‘Academic Reports’ tab on the left. NOTE: Hardcopy reports are no longer sent home, it is expected parents will access these reports via Parent Lounge.

Parents may still request a printed copy of the report. For ‘one-off’ requests, please contact the College office during business hours.

To routinely receive printed reports, please register for the service by updating the Report Mailing address in the Parent Lounge. To do this, when logged in to the Parent Lounge:

1. Select the Parent Details tab to the top left of the screen
2. Select the Update Address Details from the drop-down menu (the Postal address will appear first)
3. Click the Next Address button at the bottom right of the screen to advance to the Report Mailing option
4. Click the blue Update Address button to the right of the Report Mailing header
5. Enter or update your address details (the first field will be initially filled with the words ‘Address for postal reports’ – enter your details over this text and complete the other address fields)
6. Click the blue Submit Changes button once entries are complete

Pathways

CQ University Experience – Friday 4 May

CQ University Experience is a free, one day on-campus event allowing Year 12 students to explore their post-high school options, including both higher education degrees and TAFE. It provides high school students an opportunity to experience a day in the life of a university student.

• Explore study options of interest through on-campus events
• Pre-select areas of interest and participate in hands-on activities delivered by CQU teaching staff and current students
• Get a taste for student life - tour the campus and talk to students about their experience with CQU

Date: Friday May 4 2018
Time: 8:30am – 2:30pm

All paperwork needs to be collected from the Pathways office and returned by Monday April 23. The College will be transporting a coach load of interested students to this event so numbers are limited.

Quiet Achiever

This week I nominate Yasmine Johnson for the quiet achiever award. Yasmine is a very humble and quiet girl but she involves herself in many aspects of Shalom College. Something that really stood out was her effort at the swimming carnival. She is not yet a senior but stepped up and demonstrated many leadership qualities by encouraging the house to cheer loudly for the other students.

ANZAC DAY – April 25

We are inviting interested Shalom Staff and Students to participate with the College at the Bargara Service and/or Bundaberg Service for Anzac Day.

ANZAC Day is the solemn day of remembrance of those Australian and New Zealand Army Corps soldiers who have fought and died for their country, and is marked annually on the anniversary of the Gallipoli campaign of the First World War.

ANZAC Day is the anniversary of the landing of troops from Australia and New Zealand on the Gallipoli Peninsula, Turkey, in World War I on April 25 1915.

ANZAC Day goes beyond the anniversary of the landing on Gallipoli in 1915. It is the day on which we remember all Australians who served and died in war and on operational service past and present.

We invited staff and students interested in walking with the College to attend meetings at school break times and put their name down and receive more details about the March at Bargara and Bundaberg.

From our meetings at school – please see the following information for Parents

As you will be representing the school, it is important to adhere to the following guidelines:

• Formal uniform with polished shoes, neat hair
• Formal hat (borrow if yours is not in good condition)
• NO chewing gum
• Sleepers or studs ONLY
• Bottled water (It is often a very hot day)
• Apply sunscreen before marching

If you are marching at Bargara, please meet at 5:00am at Bargara Service Station – Corner of Bauer and Tanner Streets (at the bowsers) and report to Mr Robinson and Seniors for roll marking. Please also arrange a place where your parents will pick you up.

If you are marching in Bundaberg, please meet at the old Dick Smith’s store, 59 Bourbong Street (opposite Target) at 8:15 am. Mr Robinson and Mrs Thomson will assist the Seniors in roll marking. You need to line up in year levels, 4 across. At the conclusion of the ceremony, you will need to be collected from ANZAC park.

Middle School Matters

Year Eight Geography Excursion

Year Eight students have been out and about using their geography skills at Elliott Heads in recent weeks. Students were asked to investigate the issues of deposition and erosion at Elliott Heads in their Core Studies B “Landscapes and Landforms” unit. Their goal has been to evaluate possible solutions to the impact of deposition in the river mouth in order to justify a proposed course of action for managing the area. During their excursion, students completed field sketches of the river mouth and beach and compiled data on human use of the area.

This unit is a great opportunity for students to engage with local environments and issues. The use of a Decision Making Matrix as a tool to formulate their final recommendations is intended to help students develop the higher-level thinking skills of evaluation and justification. There may just be some budding town planners, surveyors, environmental consultants and engineers in this group who will be inspired by the process of investigating an issue and proposing solutions designed to fit the social, economic and environmental needs of the community!

College Musical

Rehearsals for Annie have been in full swing this term, with the students working tirelessly to bring this production together. The show is looking great for this stage of rehearsals, and we are extremely excited to be bringing this show to audiences next term on the June 14 – 16. Save the Date!

The normal rehearsal schedule continues, but below is a reminder of a couple of important dates coming up:

Wednesday March 28: 3:15 – 5:30pm (normal rehearsal)

Instrumental Music

Students Laura Helbig, Lace Davies, Jordan Nio, Matthew Capuzzo, Ella Marschke, Liam McGuire, Dominique Rotar and tutors Mrs Helbig and Mrs Edgar surrounding the newly purchased Grand Piano. This instrument will be an asset for all instrumental and choral groups as well as our growing number of piano students for concerts and exams or assessments.

SHEP Bundaberg

This is an annual weekend workshop for middle school instrumental and choral students held in Bundaberg each year. If you would like us to nominate your child/ren, please let me know. If you would like more information, let me know and I’ll forward you the information sent by the Griffith University Conservatorium of Music which will outline cost etc.

Catholic Schools Festival

I am currently waiting very patiently for replies from all families of students in Choir, Senior Concert Band, Chamber Strings (Orchestra, Senior Jazz and vocal ensembles) regarding transport and accommodation preferences for this year’s festival. Could you please reply as soon as possible otherwise I’ll need to ring each family for this information? We are trying to collate this information (emailed out twice) now to see how many we need to provide travel and accommodation for so that we can organise other activities in addition to the festival, while we are down there. e.g. a concert, tour of Art gallery or backstage QPAC etc.

Practice

This word seems to be very difficult for many music students to understand. The old saying ‘practice makes perfect’ still applies and is the only way students can advance in their playing techniques which will bring rewards. I would like to encourage parents to help their children who learn a musical instrument or sing to adopt a regular routine i.e. practice at least 5 times per week to enable them to reach their goals and rewards.

Cricket

Our 4 cricket teams all performed well in the last round of fixtures last Wednesday, but no result was achieved in three of the games which ended early due to rain.

In the Year 11/12 competition, Shalom Red took on Bundaberg State High School, who won the toss and elected to bowl. They borrowed a couple of Shalom Red team members as they were a little short. Shalom Red batted strongly and consistently throughout their 15 overs, amassing a total of 186 for only 2 wickets. Three batsmen retired and two were not out at the end. Four batsmen scored more than 30 runs – Adam Pozzebon (32 – retired); Rory Delaney (33 – retired); Louis Myers-Macdonnell (34 – caught); Oliver Plumb (35 – not out).

Bundaberg State High School got off to a shaky start, losing two wickets in their first over, caught off the bowling of Angus McDonald. Lachlan Carr also had a great over taking two caught and bowled wickets. Rain stopped play after 8 overs with Bundaberg State High School on 5 for 28.

Our Year 11/12 Black team had just six players due to the rugby league players playing in Gympie, and we were bowled out by Bundaberg Christian College for 88, with Joshua Pole (23) and Jack Beveridge and Jack Gray, with 20 each, leading the way. Bundaberg Christian College were 6-74 after 11 overs when the skies opened, with Edward Ryan claiming 2-20.

Our year 8 team finished unbeaten on top of the year 9-10 table with another highly professional performance to beat North Bundaberg State High School by 59 runs. They had only 6 players and we bowled them out in the last over for 33, with captain Will Hamilton (2-3) and Harrison Johnson, David Felstead and Zachary Richters taking one wicket each also in excellent spells. We replied, reaching 2-92 in 11 overs with opener Ronan Dempsey, who had rushed back from his league game in Gympie, and Will Hamilton leading the charge, both being retired for 26 and 15 respectively. Mention must also be made of Benjamin Smith, who took a superb catch fielding for North.

Our year 7/8 team were 1-25 after 4.2 overs, in reply to Isis’ 4-105 when rain intervened. Nicholas Clarke was again outstanding, taking 2-7 from three overs and being unbeaten on 13.

Ten Pin Bowling Interschool Bowling Challenge

The Ten Pin Bowling Interschool Bowling challenge takes place every year in August. This year it is on Sunday August 12 at Bundy Bowl and Leisure Centre. The cost is $40 for 6 games of Ten Pin Bowling and also includes shoe and ball hire. Schools can enter as many teams as they like but it must be teams of 3 students. You do not need to be a league bowler to participate. All players are given a handicap on the day to make it a fairer competition. On the day you play against other schools from all over Queensland competing at various bowling centres around the state. See the flyer attached for more information.

Shalom College took an Under 15 team to the Fraser Coast Rugby 7s tournament on Saturday March, 19 held at Fraser Coast Anglican College at Hervey Bay. We were able to field a relatively strong team, with many players having a number of years of rugby experience.

Shalom won all round games in our pool, accounting for Urangan State High School 30-10; Victory College 12-7; and Nambour Christian College 34-10.

We came up against St Luke’s Anglican School in our first semi-final, and despite a strong effort, some lapses in defence saw St Luke’s win 12-7.

Shalom again played Urangan State High School in the Plate Final, defeating them 22-7 – essentially placing third in our age division. Good Shepherd Lutheran College from Noosa claimed the Under 15 Cup.

Top try scorer for Shalom was Nahum Pascoe with 4 tries. Other try scorers included: Hamish Young, Chelson Diggins, and James Waters (3 tries each); Ryan Mant (2 tries); Harry Packwood, Ben Wood, Ethan Freney and William Zahn (1 try each).

All players can be proud of their conduct and achievements.

Thanks go to Mrs Karen Miller-Smith for her role as manager on the day. Thanks also to the many parents who drove down and stayed the day supporting our players.

OPEN GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

Week six

The Shalom 1 open girls’ volleyball team had a close match against the ever improving, younger Shalom 2, claiming the match 2 sets to nil. After being down 4 - 14 in the first set, the Shalom 1 girls were able to claw their way back and narrowly take the first set. In the second set, Shalom 1 had fewer errors and with some quick play at the net and a more determined effort to use three hits, they were able to convincingly take the second set. Another great team effort. We are now looking forward to Finals Day play-offs.

Sporting Achievements

2018 Australian Junior Championships

Nathan Donaldson did extremely well at the Junior Nationals achieving a personal best in the 100m Wheelchair Under 20 event at the Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. Nathan competed in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m and was first in his classification.

Well done Nathan.

U18 Men’s 100m National Finals

Matthew Otto ran two personal bests last week at the Junior Australian Athletics Championships held at Sydney Olympic Park. The semi-final 10.80 and the National Final 10.66 seconds, previous personal best was 10.91 seconds.

Matthew’s time of 10.66 seconds qualifies Matthew for the Youth Olympics later this year in Argentina.

The Athletes that Matthew competed against are some of the best junior 100m sprinters in the World.

Matthews IAAF World Ranking for the 100m U18 is now 14th in the World down from 32 just three weeks ago.

Golf Day Fundraiser - Sunday April 22 2018

Shalom Rowing Supporters Group is holding a Golf Day at Bundaberg Golf Club, North Bundaberg and would love you to join them for an enjoyable day while supporting Shalom Rowing.

Teams consist of 3 players (3 Person Ambrose) with Registration Fees of $120 per Team ($40/Player) which includes 18 holes of golf and an all-day sausage sizzle.

Science and Mathematics Competitions for 2018

This year Shalom College students have the opportunity to participate in the following national and international competitions:

ICAS Science Competition: Tuesday May 29
Australian Mathematics Competition: Thursday August 9

Students are assessed against other students in the same school year, state and country. The competitions are designed to be a fun event, removed from the pressures of formal assessment with problems and questions designed to stimulate the interest of students. All students receive a certificate showing their level of achievement and a detailed report outlining their performance.

If your student would like to participate in either the ICAS Science Competition or the Australian Mathematics competition parents need to complete the appropriate nomination form and students then submit it to student reception. Parents are encouraged to make the required payment online through Tours and Excursions in the Parent Lounge Portal by Friday April 20.

The Reds Are Coming to Shalom!!!

The Queensland Reds Rugby Union Elite Youth Development Regional Talent ID Academy will kick off at 4pm Thursday March 29 2018 at Shalom College oval. Under 15 and Under 16 Boys are encouraged to participate.

EVERYONE is welcome to attend.

Anyone wishing to attend this session needs to complete the online JotForm located at the link below.

Bundaberg and District Junior Rugby will kick off their winter season Friday April 20 2018 and everyone is welcome along to TRY rugby for FREE!

Reds talent ID scouts will be in Bundaberg on Thursday March 29 at 4pm-6pm at the rugby field at Shalom College. They will be looking for Bundaberg boys to form a part of the Junior Gold Cup U15 and Queensland U16 team selections. This is great news for Bundaberg as you will be able to showcase your skills direct to the Reds with no other regions involved, and in your own backyard.

“This tour also forms the first stage of selection for two key Queensland Reds Academy Pathway programs- U15 Junior Gold Cup and Queensland U16 teams. These programs take place in September 2018 and are made of up outstanding U15 and U16 male players from across the state” Said Qld Reds Pathways Coordinator Mr Tyrell Barker.

Queensland Reds Academy staff that are attending the session are as follows:

Mr Jason Gilmore – Head Coach- Queensland Reds Academy
Mr Tyrell Barker – Development Coach- Queensland Reds Academy
Mr Matt Lieschke – Head of Athletic Performance- Queensland Reds Academy

Mr Jason Gilmore is the current head coach of the Junior Wallabies (Australian U20’s), was the defence coach for the Queensland Reds Super Rugby team in 2017). Previously he has been head coach of the following teams- Queensland U20 (2 x National Championships), Queensland Country NRC, Churchie First XV (GPS Rugby Champions), Toowoomba Grammar School 1st XV, Souths Premier Grade (Brisbane Premier Competition)

Mr Matt Lieschke was formally the Qantas Wallabies Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach, including the 2015 Rugby World Cup campaign in the UK to which Australia were finalists- losing to the All Blacks in the World Cup final. He also was the Assistant Strength and Conditioning coach before that to the Queensland Reds, including the 2011 Super Rugby campaign to which the Queensland Reds were crowned champions.

Mr Tyrell Barker runs the Queensland Reds Academy Programs (U15- U18), including U15 Junior Gold Cup, Queensland U16, Queensland Schoolboys, NRC U19 and Queensland Women’s XV.

A tennis clinic for children will be conducted at Rotary Park Tennis Complex, 69b George Street, South Bundaberg by Bundaberg Tennis Academy Coaches, Mr Murray Whitbread and Mr Kevin Banner.

Make a globe at the Hinkler Hall of Aviation

Come on in to the Hinkler Hall of Aviation these school holidays and make your very own globe!

This FREE activity will be held within the Gallery at the Hinkler Hall of Aviation on Wednesday April 11 2018 between 9:00am and 3:00pm.

Check out Bert's original Avro Baby aircraft (on loan from Queensland Museum) while you are there.

You can also view a few of Bert's original items of memorabilia on display within the Gallery, courtesy of the Hinkler Hall of Aviation Memorabilia Trust.

Local resident rates are available to enjoy the entire Hinkler Hall of Aviation experience, including the all new Armstrong Siddeley exhibit within the Hall.

Alloway Football Club

The Alloway Football Club Incorporated is currently still looking for some junior players who would be interested in playing football (soccer) in 2018. The club has the following spots available in U/6 x 2, U/7 x 1, U/8 x 4, U/10 x 2, U/11 x 4, U/12 x 3 and U/13 x 3. Trainings are on a Thursday afternoon at St Luke's Anglican School, for teams in u/6 to u/12, from 4pm.
