Principal's Reflection

In the Sports sections of the Weekend Australian, June 25-26 2016, I read an article titled "Big Ben and the 'Money Maker'" written by Will Swanton.

The names will mean something to those who are very interested in basketball!

The article is about a young Australian basketballer, Ben Simmons - the number 1 pick at the NBA draft - and Thon Maker, a Sudan-born, Perth raised young man who was the 10th pick in New York City.

It's Ben's story that I refer to.

Ben told reporters that he could now relax as he knew what team he was with, where he was headed and that he could start working for the team.

"It honestly feels like all this pressure has just hopped off me," he said in New York City while wearing a Philadelphia 76ers cap and the crown of being the number 1 pick.

As a kid he was always around his father, Dave, who is an American-Australian former professional basketball player who played thirteen seasons in the Australian NBL. He also had a two year coaching stint with the Hunter Pirates.

Those people who knew Dave Simmons commented on the fact that Ben was always with his dad and that over time Ben would have watched hours and hours of basketball, "watching good players train".

Ben paid tribute to his father in New York. Ben is quoted as saying, "…seeing my dad play professionally in Australia…he just worked hard. Being able to share that with him and for him to see where his son has gone and taken it…it's very special to me."

Ben acknowledges that he has a good family around him with lots of support and he seems genuinely grateful for what his parents have done for him.

In his speech after the draft he said, and I quote, "….it feels amazing, honestly, I can't even - my legs were shaking when I was on stage. Anything you want to do, you can do. You've got to put the work in and the time. You've just got to believe in yourself. I've been wanting to do this since I was five, six, seven and I've finally accomplished it."

I felt the above story timely - as the student reports for Semester 1 are available to students and parents now. The words in bold should resonate with all. Nothing comes easily, and not without much hard work.

Personal Development Education

As you are aware our students in each year level have undertaken a Personal Development Education program this year. At the beginning of the year I advised that we had subscribed to a study skills program and published the parent username and password so that you could keep abreast of what your son or daughter was doing.

To access the handbook, go to the link below and login as a subscriber with these details:

Username: shalomcollege
Password: 18results

http://www.studyskillshandbook.com.au/

I hope that you have looked at this program as the students have worked through many of the modules and I do hope that this has helped all students with goal setting, time management, organisation, working hard and putting in the time. A quote I came across many years ago: the only place success comes before work is in the dictionary! And as I said to my Year 8 class, it is now time to get very serious about schoolwork.

Academic Awards Evening

Our Academic Awards Evening for 2016 will be held on Monday 24 October in the Shalom College Sports Centre.

Academic awards to be presented on this night include:

  • Subject Prizes
  • Academic Excellence Awards
  • Studentship Awards
  • Special Awards

Most awards are determined using results up to the end of Term 3.

Academic Excellence Awards

Academic Excellence Awards are allocated to students in each year level who have achieved a pre-determined number of 'A' standards across the subjects they have studied for the year to the end of Term 3. To be eligible for an Academic Excellence Award the following criteria must be met:

  • Year 7, 8 and 9 students must achieve an 'A' in at least one of the 4 core subjects, and at least 6 altogether
  • Year 10 students must achieve an 'A' in at least one of the 4 core subjects, and at least 5 altogether
  • Year 11 and 12 students must achieve at least 4VHA's across their subjects

Studentship Awards

Studentship Awards acknowledge students who have been consistently diligent in their approach to academic studies; who have been active participants in class and who have completed all tasks to the best of their ability.

Studentship awards are allocated on the basis of a quantum of nominations received from class teachers. In making their nominations, teachers are asked to specifically identify students who have demonstrated:

  • consistently high academic effort in class throughout the year
  • consistently high application to study and homework
  • an excellent attitude to learning

A studentship award is not an acknowledgement of good behaviour; it is an award that recognises and promotes individual academic excellence.

Subject Prizes

Subject Prizes are only awarded to Students in Years 10 to 12.

All subject prizes for students in Years 10 to 12 are determined by the respective Learning Area Coordinators in consultation with subject teachers.

Special Awards

Special awards include the 'All Rounder' Awards (one boy and one girl from each of Years 7, 8 and 9), sponsored awards including the ADF Leadership and Teamwork Awards (Years 10 and 12); the EH & FC Churchward Sugar Cane Technology Award (Year 10); the EH & FC Churchward Sugar Industry Bursary (Year 12); the Ahern Family Bursary (Year 12); the Service to School and Community Award (Year 12); Gladstone Port Authority Bursary (Year 12); the Mayor's Medals (Year 12); the Principal's Award (Year 12) and Dux of the College (Year 12).

Special awards are determined by the Principal in consultation with the College Leadership Team and academic and pastoral coordinators as appropriate.

Parents of all students who are receiving awards this year will be notified during Week 3 of Term 4.

If you have any questions about the Academic Awards Evening or the process of Award selection, please direct them to the Assistant Principal, Mr Robin Wust.

Senior Subject Selection Information - Year 11 2017

Continuing with the Year 10 Personal Futures Education Program, the Senior Subject Selection Information Evening is scheduled for tomorrow Tuesday 26 July. The evening will commence at 7:00pm in the Performing Arts Precinct Theatre and will be very important for all parents of students and students, entering Year 11 in 2017.

The Senior Subject Selection Guide - 2017

The Senior Subject Selection Guide - 2017 is published electronically and all students have been instructed to download this to their devices and share it with parents. Parents can also download the Guide via the College intranet under the 'Year 10 Personal Futures Education Resources' tab; a wealth of additional information can also be accessed from this location. Parents who do not have access to the internet and/or who would like a printed copy of the guide may request same from the College office.

Please also note that senior subject selections are now made online. Students will be provided with the necessary login details and selections for Year 11 2017 can be made and updated at any time from Tuesday 26 July, but must be finalised by Friday 26 August following the completion of Senior Education and Training (SET) Plan interviews. All Year 10 students will participate in a SET Plan interview that parents are welcome to attend, during the school day. SET Plan interviews will commence on Monday 8 August; students will be advised of interview times in the coming weeks.

Year 10 Students Accessing Learner Accounts

All Year 10 have been advised of how to access their Learner Accounts. It is important that all senior students access their learner accounts. Learner Accounts are accessed through the QCAA's Student Connect portal at the link below. A link to this portal is also available on the dashboard of the College intranet. There are instructions for logging into their Learner Account on the landing page of the portal, but students will need to know their LUI number. Year 10 students were given their LUI on a special card during PC last week. Their initial password is the first four digits of their birthday, eg the password for a student whose birthday is on 6 January would be 0601. After the initial login students will be prompted to create a new password.

https://studentconnect.qcaa.qld.edu.au/

If students have any difficulty with logging in via the Student Connect portal, they are welcome to contact the Shalom IT HelpDesk or me for assistance. All students can also obtain their LUI number from their teachers, House Coordinator or the College office.

2016 Early School Leavers survey

The Queensland Government is conducting its annual statewide survey of students who left school in Years 10, 11 and prior to completing Year 12 during 2015. The Early School Leavers survey is a short, confidential survey that collects information about what young people are doing the year after leaving school. The information from the survey helps our schools to understand the pathways young people follow after leaving school and to plan services to support transitions into study or employment for our students.

Between July and August 2016, our students who left school in Years 10, 11 and prior to completing Year 12 last year can expect to receive an invitation to complete a web-based survey or a telephone call from the Queensland Government Statistician's Office to complete the survey. Please encourage early school leavers to take part.

For more information, visit the link below or telephone toll free on 1800 068 587.

Quiet Achiever

Our Quiet Achiever for this week is Katrina Byrne, Year 8 MacKillop.

We had a new student arrive in MacKillop House last week and I asked Katrina to show her around the College. Katrina took her job seriously and I noticed on several occasions that she was going out of her way to show the new student around and check to see if she needed any extra assistance. Katrina has made the transition to Shalom much easier for the new student and is a wonderful example of thoughtfulness and kindness that we at Shalom truly admire in our students. Well done Katrina and thank you.

Indigenous Student Support

Kyria Gahan, Jesse Domic, Kye Russell and Amber Domic

It's always good to see past Shalom students return and talk with current students on their success and how they are travelling in the big world outside of school. Last week a small group of Indigenous students had the chance to sit down and talk with Jesse Domic, Amber Domic and Kyria Gahan. The students had questions about university life, Deadly Choices and of course football.

Jesse is currently working full time for Deadly Choices in Brisbane and after work goes on to university lectures followed up by football training for the two teams that he is playing for. Jesse, Amber and Kyria explained to the students how important time management is to succeed with studying and fitting in sport and work.

Jesse, Amber and Kyria are great role models for our Shalom students and shows us all that hard work and dedication pays off.

We would like to thank Jesse, Amber and Kyria for taking time out of their holidays to come motivate, mentor and talk with the students.

Mrs Kelli Cory
Indigenous Coordinator

Year 10 History

Year 10 History students have recently visited the Anne Frank House Exhibition at the Bundaberg Regional Art Gallery 'BRAG'. This exhibition from the Anne Frank House in Sydney connects the personal story of a teenage Jewish girl called Anne Frank with the historical events of Germany under Hitler, prior and during World War II. As all students had studied World War II and the Holocaust in Term 1, this exhibition was very relevant to students' general knowledge of the era. The school would like to thank the staff of BRAG, particularly Rebecca Maclean for her interesting and informative talk about the life of Anne Frank and Jewish people during World War II.

Relay for Life Concert

Last Saturday, despite the appalling weather, a large audience attended this fundraising concert in the Holy Rosary, raising much needed money for cancer research. Mrs Connolly was kept busy during the afternoon by playing with her string quartet as well as conducting the Shalom Orchestra, which was received extremely well with audience requesting an encore. Well done to all students and a big thank you to all performers including singers, Jordan Meissner (past student) and Isabella Beutel and musicians Ian King, Jacob King, James Belluz, Robert Rotar, Kate Hardisty and Christine Buwalda.

Bundaberg Eisteddfod

The program is scheduled to be available this week. An information letter will be sent with performance times for the event which is held from Tuesday 2 to Thursday 4 August at the Civic Centre.

Queensland Catholic Schools Music Festival

Thank you to everyone for responding to my urgent call for forms to be returned. I am still waiting for a number of permission/medical forms which need to be handed in before we depart. Please ensure all payments are made by Friday 29 July. Any cancellations after that date cannot be refunded. An information letter will be emailed soon.

Performance Uniform

All performers for the Bundaberg Eisteddfod and Catholic Schools Festival must have a performance uniform, which is available from the uniform shop.

Dance

Please note that the annual Dance Night Performance will be held on Friday 28 and Saturday 29 October. Ticket sales will be advertised in the newsletter. Rehearsals commence this week for this wonderful concert.

Upcoming Events

15 October - Strings concert at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, Corner Woongarra and Barolin Streets, Bundaberg. Time to be advised.
19 October - Get Smart Concert, 1:30pm at Shalom College Performing Arts Precinct.

Papua New Guinea

In the second week of the June/July holidays myself, Mrs Cheryl Petersen and Mr Vince Habermann travelled to Papua New Guinea as representatives of Shalom College and more specifically, the Shalom St Vincent de Paul Society. For many years the SVDP group at Shalom has helped to support an organisation called WeCare that operates in Port Moresby. The organisation supports women and children who are marginalised and living in poverty. We have also helped support Joan and Roy Smith who regularly ship donations and raise funds for schools and communities in Papua New Guinea, including the WeCare organisation and Sacred Heart College in Hagita.

We were lucky to spend most of our time in an area called Alotau, staying at the Parish Centre. Next door was Sacred Heart College, a secondary school of around 800 students, with about half of them being boarders. Despite the fact that it was school holidays while we were there, some of the boarders remained as it was a three to four day travel to their homes on nearby islands. The teachers were 'enjoying' some professional development time and we were lucky to be able to spend some time with them - sharing our experiences and details of Shalom, a staff Mass and a lunchtime feast. With classes of up to 45 or 50 at times, no teacher aides and limited resources, they were looking forward to a well-deserved holiday.

During our time in Alotau we also travelled around in the back of a ute to various parishes in the area. These included Daio and Sagarai Valley and East Cape which is the furthest tip of the mainland. The people we met were very welcoming and generous, shaking our hands (like a receiving line for the Royal Family) and preparing us a beautiful lunch (despite really not having much to spare). Some of the high school age kids we met are very keen to write to Shalom students and have already shared with us an address and names. In our travels there were always people to offer a lift in the ute, as the majority of people walk everywhere they go. One group we gave a lift home to were going to walk for at least two hours. The other alternative was a PMV, their version of public transport that was simply a truck with planks of wood in the back to sit on.

We also visited a group called the Hope Academy in Alotau. They teach basic computer skills to the people of the area which include high school age students and adults. These skills being taught allow for better work opportunities. Hopefully by now they have finished constructing and outfitting their new building to allow for more space and extend their program and get out of the cramped hot space they were in. One of the problems they have is that the internet is unreliable and often 'hit and miss'.

In Port Moresby we visited a small primary school in a very poor settlement that is supported by the WeCare organisation. We also visited their offices and saw a shipping container that they were converting into a toilet block for the school. At the moment they have an open pit toilet - just amazing. We also attended mass with Mr McMahon's friend Father Ben Fleming celebrating the feast day of Papua New Guinea's Blessed Peter To Rot. Here we heard hymns sung in Pidgin, saw traditional dancers and music from a youth group.

We had an amazing time and met so many wonderful and generous people. The main purpose of our visit was to further our College and Parish links with these organisations and check out the feasibility and safety for further visits in future years. It would be wonderful for us to do charitable works and cultural exchanges with these beautiful and highly spiritual people and experiencing the primitive way of life of Australia's nearest geographical neighbours. Can't wait to go back.
