Principal’s Reflection

This year, Shalom introduces two new Houses – McCormack & Damien. Our Houses are named after heroic people who, we hope, will inspire the lives and direction of our young people. McCormack is named in honour of Australian Sister of St Joseph, Irene McCormack who was martyred in Peru in the 1980s. Damien is named in honour of St Damien of Molokai who ministered to the outcast lepers in the Hawaiian Islands. We all need heroes. Ordinary people like us, who somehow manage to do extraordinary things. They show us the way. Like many, I was saddened over the Christmas break, to hear of the death of Bishop Desmond Tutu in South Africa. He was a hero. He could be in contention for a House to be named after him in the future.

He was, surely, a saint of our time. His impact on the people of South Africa was profound. In assisting his people to navigate a post-apartheid world, he was described by many as the ‘moral compass’ of the nation. His influence spread far beyond his continent. His spirituality will continue to be inspirational for Christians of all denominations and all who seek good. Desmond Tutu was never afraid to speak truth to power, whatever its creed or colour. On the announcement of his death, tributes flowed. He was highly regarded. Pope Francis who was ‘…mindful of his service to the gospel through the promotion of racial equality and reconciliation..’ In our efforts to be an authentic and Christ centred Catholic school, we would do well to draw on his example and courage. He did not shy away from challenging conventual wisdom or tradition. Desmond Tutu challenged his own Church and his emerging nation to be inclusive and respectful of all. He coined the phrase in describing the new South Africa as the ‘Rainbow Nation’ – one that would welcome all. He was a strong supporter of the LGBT community and he famously once said that, ‘..he would never worship a homophobic God.’ If we, as Catholic schools, embrace the example of Desmond Tutu, we will be encouraged to keep outreaching those most in need by providing financial support to parents who could not otherwise be able to afford to send their children to a Catholic school. We will continue to offer our young people a chance to reach out to those less fortunate through Edmund Rice Camps and St Vincent de Paul activities. We will actively support our House charities. We will continue to welcome to Shalom those of other faiths and none and faithfully share the values of the Gospel that we hold most dear. We will welcome and support same sex attracted young people and those who really struggle with their sexual identity. We will challenge young people to treat everyone – and especially those that they might not particularly like – respectfully. The life of Bishop Desmond Tutu has much to offer us as a Catholic school striving to be authentic and relevant in the faith lives of everyone in this community. Long may his spirit live!

Welcome to all of our new students, staff and parents. I hope your journey at Shalom will be blessed. Even given the disrupted start to the year, we will do our best to ensure that the new members of this community feel welcomed and supported.

School Buses & Masks – one of our bus companies rang and asked me to remind parents that mask wearing is mandatory on buses for students – even when seated. Please ensure your child has a mask at school and if travelling by bus, wears this unless having a medical exemption.

Bishop’s In-Service Day is always a student free day on our calendar. This year, we were set to have this on Friday 18 Feb. Given the late start we’ve had, this date will be changed to Friday 1 April. This is the last day of Term 1. On our calendar, this is down as Summer Finals Day but as sporting structures have changed, we no longer need Finals day. Summer sports teams will be awarded premierships to whichever team is on the top of the ladder after five rounds of competition.

Students and Headphones – if teachers have to quarantine and teach students via Teams once the term gets underway, it will be really helpful and almost essential, that every student carries with them a set of headphones for their laptops.

Student Welfare and Information

I found this poem, written by David Bowen, in a book written by Dr Ian Lillico (2000).

It highlights the important partnership between the parent/home and the school. We are very fortunate here at Shalom to have such supportive families. Very good outcomes are the result of this partnership.

A Sculptor Stood in his Studio

I dreamed I stood in a studio
And watched two sculptors there,
The clay they used was a young child’s mind
And they fashioned it with care.

One was a teacher; the tools being used
Were books and music and art,
One a parent with a guiding hand
And a gentle heart.

Day after day the teacher toiled
With touch that was deft ad sure,
While the parent laboured just as hard
And polished and smoothed it o’er.

When at last their task was done,
They were proud of what they had wrought
For the things they had moulded into the child
Could neither be sold or bought.

And both agreed they would have failed
If they had worked alone.
For behind the parent stood the school
And behind the teacher, the home.

Year 12 Formal Dinner Dance News

Important Notice

I am in the process of organizing the Formal for this year and in my communication with the Multiplex Centre where we hold this function, I have been notified that all parents attending the Formal will need to be vaccinated and show their vaccination status upon entry.

Boys Attire: I have mentioned this to the boys last year about the outfit they need to wear on the night. This is a formal occasion and as such all students wear formal outfits. The girls are in formal dresses, so we expect the same standard of the boys. The boys need to be in a suit with a tie/bow tie (their choice) and socks with good shoes.

Information re all students

Record Books: There have been changes to book for this year.

  • No parent signatures required anymore, however, I do encourage you to look at their Record Book. PC teachers will continue to sign the Record Book.
  • Students are to write their 4 subjects per day – the younger year levels need to do this so that they are organized for their day – know what to bring each day for each lesson.
  • In the back of the book, we now have a Permission to Leave the Classroom form which the student needs to fill out prior to leaving the room, recording the reason and the time they leave; on their return they record the time in.
  • Students who present to school without the full uniform or in a sports uniform rather than their formal uniform, or whose hairstyle does not meet the College standards as outlined in the Uniform and Grooming Policy (in the Record Book) will be withdrawn from the grounds at both breaks on that day. They will be allowed to buy their lunch or get their lunch from their bag and sit in the open area in the House block. They will have access to toilets and drinks just not out with their friends. The student’s House Coordinator will be supervising the students.
  • A stamp which states that they have a Uniform and Grooming Infringement will be stamped in their Record Book – this will alert you that they did not follow the College policy in this regard.
  • At the beginning of each term there is a study planner which is to be filled out by the student in the first week. This is important as students need to manage their time particularly around assessment time.

Other grooming issues

  • A reminder that the girls are not permitted to have eyelash extensions or acrylic nails.
  • The boys need to be very aware of hair styles they are permitted – outlined in the Record Book
  • Boys need to come to school clean shaven.

We thank the parents who always make sure that their son or daughter is well groomed and always wears the correct uniform. It is very much appreciated.

Our Responsible Thinking Classroom continues – this is for those students who disrupt the learning of others in their class. The Year 7s will be informed about this next week.

Punctuality and Attendance

Students need to be at school by 8:25 am each day. The first 15 to 20 minutes of the lesson are crucial and if your child is late, they are missing valuable teaching time. All students do become unwell from time to time however, some take more days off than are perhaps needed. House Coordinators will be checking punctuality and attendance in their respective Houses and will be in touch with a parent/guardian to see if that student needs extra support. Once again thanks in this regard.

I look forward to Monday when all students are back; one Year 7 student who has been here this week said she was really looking forward to next week when the holidays were finally over!

She said, “Miss, nine weeks is just too long”.

Take care

Curriculum

Welcome back to all our existing families and a big welcome to our new Shalom families. We look forward to another great year at Shalom. Given our delayed start and knowing this year will not be without its challenges, we look forward to working together in partnership with all our families to support our students the best way possible.

Key staff supporting students this year will be Mrs O’Donnell (Pathways Coordinator), Mrs Allen (Senior School Coordinator), Mrs Munckton (Middle School Coordinator), Mrs Staley (Student Services Coordinator) and Mr Robinson, Student Welfare Coordinator.

Working from home if absent

As students return this week, we are aware this may not be possible for some students due to COVID related situations. Or perhaps in the coming weeks your student may not be able to attend school due to following isolation rules. If your student is absent but can continue to work from home they will need to log into SIA. They should go to their timetabled class page and access the work the teacher has indicated is being completed in class for the lesson. This is easily identified in the box labelled “Lesson Notes” on the left hand side of the class page. To log into SIA students should use their Shalom College username and password.

If for some reason your child cannot access their SIA page use the link here:

https://schoolbox.shalomcollege.com/login/

As per our normal college procedure, if a teacher is absent due to illness students access their class work via SIA. If a teacher is absent but working from home Teams will be used to communicate with their classes during the timetabled lesson and SIA again used to access the class work.

Subject Changes

Senior School: Year 10 and 11 students and parents were advised by email on Friday 21 January.

Year 11 students may still make appointments here:

https://year11appointmentsmrsallen.youcanbook.me/

Year 10 students may attend the Senior School Coordinator’s office (Admin Building - Student Reception) in person at the advertised times (please see notice in Sia).

Deadline for all forms: Year 10 – Friday 11 February, Year 11 – Monday 14 February

Any student applying for a study line due to external commitments such as TAFE or School Based Apprenticeships should see the Pathways Coordinator Mrs O’Donnell.

Middle School: Year 9 students wishing to change an elective subject need to see Mrs Munckton prior to 8:30am Friday 11 February.

Tutoring

A number of College teachers voluntarily run tutorial sessions before, during and after school in a number of different learning areas and year levels. The Term One tutoring timetable has been published in this newsletter for your information. We will commence tutoring this week.

Homework / Study Planners

The Homework/Study Planner (located in the Student Record Book at the start of each term) is a tool to be used by all students to assist in developing time management and assessment management skills. This week your student will be assisted in their Pastoral Care class to develop their Term 1 study planner.

Please note that the Student Record Book details the Academic Policies and Procedures of the College. It is strongly recommended that parents and students familiarise themselves with these procedures to ensure they are meeting their obligations with regards to assessment.

NAPLAN Dates

As per the School Calendar the 2022 NAPLAN Online testing dates are 10 – 20 May.

Sia is coming!!

Shalom is very excited to introduce parents to Sia. Sia is a unique all-in-one online community portal and teaching and learning environment. Sia provides the tools for you to take part in your child's learning journey and our school community. Staff, students, parents and groups can communicate in one place improving the flow of information, fostering teamwork and connecting people throughout our school community.

In the coming weeks, you will receive a letter with instructions on how to access Sia. When you login, Sia gives you access to all the information you need including links to your child’s assessment due dates, assessment results and teacher comments, timetables, co-curricular groups and resources such as the school calendar – all with one login.

Best of all, Sia will have a phone app associated with it (a preview is above on the right)! This allows easy access for parents to be able to catch up with school news, see your child’s results, email absences to the school etc, all while having coffee on the lounge!

Our students have been using Sia in their classes in 2021 and we are super-excited about rolling out Sia to parents in 2022. We hope you will be excited as well!

Year 12 Exam Block – 25 February – 1 March

Year 12 students will participate in an exam block from 25 February – 1 March. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached. Please note this is a change from the original dates advertised on the school calendar. It was decided to move the exam block a little later to accommodate the delayed start to the school year.

Students participating in this exam block will undergo Unit 3 assessment. This assessment is summative and as such will contribute towards the ATAR score. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.

During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.

Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block.

We wish our students all the best with their studies.

Mission

A New Year

Each year we have a theme to focus on and the theme for this year is Mosaic. A mosaic is an artwork that is created often with broken tiles or the discarded bits that could not be used alone. All over the world there are stunning mosaics made from the off cuts, leftovers and broken bits.

We can think about our lives being mosaics in 2 ways.

Firstly, as an individual. All the little parts of our lives coming together to create a beautiful, unique image. The good bits and the bad bits, the joys and sorrows, the beauty and ugliness, all make up each of us. It helps us to remember we are more than one bad decision, one embarrassing event, one spectacular win, one great result.

Secondly, as a community. We are all part of the whole design. All our little bits, that are limited when alone, joining together to create a complete picture. The whole picture cannot be grasped by looking at one piece. All are required. One part does not indicate the whole.

The tiles of our mosaic are made up of the interactions we have with others, how we care for our each other, the relationships we build, the work we produce, the strength of our faith and the service we render to our community. The opportunities to make a difference and the decision points we have each day are almost endless. In these important moments, how will we show up? How will we act? Will the thought that we have the opportunity to create something special and beautiful cross our minds?

This year our challenge is to allow ourselves to see the beauty in our own mosaic and to work hard to create a Shalom mosaic where, everyone is included.

Some Date Changes

Please note for following date changes have been made due to the current COVID situation

Bishop’s Inservice Day is now 1 April (not the 18 February)
Year 12 Induction is now 10 March not 24 February

School Photo Day – Tuesday 8 February

All students received an order envelope from their House Coordinator/PC Teacher today. The order envelopes are printed uniquely for each student. The order and payment instructions to students and parents can be found on the envelopes. Spare envelopes for new enrolments can be collected directly by the students from Student Reception.

IMPORTANT

Every student must present their envelope directly to the photographers on photo day, even if not purchasing a photo. These photos will also be used for the 2021 Student IDs.

Students are required to wear the formal uniform on Photo day, including the School Tie.

Please note, the ‘composite group’ option includes individual photos of all the students in the same year level as your student, not group photos.

If you would like a photo of siblings together (that are currently enrolled at Shalom) you may order a ‘Family photo’. These order envelopes are to be collected directly from our Front Office or Student reception tomorrow morning prior to photos, if this is not possible there will be another opportunity for Family Photos on ‘catch up’ photo day.

Students absent on School photo day, will have a second opportunity on the ‘Catch up’ photo day on Wednesday 16 February.

2022 Immunisation program for Year 7 and Year 10

COVID vaccines are NOT part of the School Program

Shalom College is participating in Queensland Health’s annual School Immunisations Program. All Year 7 and Year 10 students will be offered free vaccinations as recommended on the National Immunisation schedule to protect against vaccine preventable diseases. In 2022, Year 7 students will be offered human papillomavirus (HPV) and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (whooping cough) vaccination. Year 10 students will be offered meningococcal ACWY vaccination.

The consent cards will be given to all our current year 7 students via House Coordinators/PC Teachers early in Term 1. Participating students are required to return the completed forms to Student reception by 14 February.

Any late forms will need to be returned to Ozcare directly. Only students with a signed and completed consent card, indicating ‘Yes to Vaccination’ will be vaccinated.

Vaccines offered in the Queensland School Immunisation Program

School Year

Vaccine

Dose and administration

Year 7

Human Papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine

Two doses of GARDASIL®9 will be offered, providing protection against 9 types of HPV. The recommended interval for the two doses should be given at least 6 months apart

Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine

One booster dose of adult/adolescent vaccine will be offered. Most students will have received doses previously when they were pre-school age.

Year 10

Meningococcal ACWY vaccine

One dose will be offered.

If you do not wish your child to be vaccinated, or your child has already been vaccinated with the offered vaccines, please complete the ‘No to Vaccination’ section on the consent card and return the consent card to the school within one week.

The Public Health Act 2005 requires the school principal to disclose student and parent information for eligible Year 7 and Year 10 students to the school immunisation provider if requested. This information will enable the school immunisation provider to determine those who have and have not consented, and directly follow-up with parents of students who have not returned a consent card. This direct follow-up ensures all parents are offered the opportunity for their child to participate in this important school health program. It may also assist you in making decisions about your child’s immunisation needs.

Parents or legal guardians who have indicated ‘No to Vaccination’ will not be followed up by the provider.

School immunisation providers will be bound to comply with the Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld). This Act stipulates the requirements for the secure collection, use, storage and disposal of personal information to be followed by school health program providers.

The vaccinations will be conducted by a team of authorised registered nurses and/or a medical practitioner. Parents or legal guardians are encouraged to ensure their children have an adequate breakfast on the morning of vaccination.

For further information about the School Immunisation Program please call 13 HEALTH (13432584) or visit the website below:

Pathways

We extend a very warm welcome to new and returning students for the 2022 school year. While we may have had a slower start to Term One we are looking forward to another successful year supporting our students on their individual Pathways.

The Pathways department is located in the Goondeel Resource Centre (with Mrs O’Donnell’s office behind the red door). Students can also access Mrs O’Donnell’s office via the external door in the courtyard. Our door is always open – before school, lunch and afternoon tea and after school.

We offer support to students by providing advice and information about additional learning opportunities, such as TAFE, and work experience as well as assisting students with the transition from school to employment and higher education.

The 2022 Pathways team is Mrs Liza O’Donnell (Pathways Coordinator) and Mrs Kathy Laing (Work Experience Coordinator/Pathways Administration) and Mrs Julia Fox (Study Supervisor).

Study is offered to students participating in additional learning opportunities so that and they are actively supported and assisted in maintaining success in both their external learning and school subjects. Our 2022 Tafe students commence this week. The following booklet is a reminder of all the information covering course dates and details that should have already received by students and parents.

We congratulate all the students who took the initiative to participate in work experience during the school holiday break and those who have secured school-based apprenticeships and traineeships to start the new year. Feedback from local businesses has been extremely positive.

We are also extremely proud of all our graduating 2021 Year 12 students that have secured university/further study placements, employment and apprenticeships.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers

At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.

Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.

For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.

Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).

No experience required!

THE SACRAMENTS- MAKING JESUS REAL

Anne Sheehan
Liturgy & Sacramental
Co-Ordinator

Our Catholic primary schools use a program called Making Jesus Real (MJR) to complement their Religious Education curriculum. It aims to assists students to identify many practical ways to recognise and show Jesus in their lives. It is hoped the students will gain a strong relationship with God through Christ and his Church.

Making Jesus real in our own lives is a daily pursuit. Recognizing the Risen Jesus necessitates an awareness of the presence of God in all things. It is difficult for children to understand and believe in an unseen, divine being, and it is our responsibility to provide the proof that God is with them.

Sometimes we need to see before we believe. Think of the gospel story of Thomas, or the story of the 4-year-old child who, during a very loud, stormy night, rushes into her parents’ bedroom crying, “Mummy! Mummy! I’m scared!”, to which her mother replies, “Don’t worry darling. God loves you and is watching over you.” “I know that Mummy, but right now I need someone with skin on!”

We are like the little child and Thomas. We need to experience things through our senses. To put us in touch with Christ, and through him God, the Church invites us to take part in specially meaningful activities which we call the seven sacraments. The sacraments with their rituals and symbols make God present to us in the ordinariness of our lives. The sacraments are profoundly human and in touch with natural human experiences such as birth, washing, cleansing, healing, commitment, eating and drinking, anointing, forgiveness, joy.

If you listen to Bishop Robert Barron, the sacraments are THE most important things in our Church: “In the Sacraments Jesus is present ministering to his people, healing and anointing them, nourishing and commissioning them, sharing his life with them.” The sacraments are visible signs of an invisible Grace, which is the divine friendship or life that Jesus wants to share with us. The sacraments are more than making Jesus real to others and ourselves. The sacraments draw us into an intimate relationship with God, through the Risen Jesus, in union with the Holy Spirit, that transform us to reflect God’s love to the world.

Each year the Sacramental Team assists parents in the preparation of their children for the childhood sacraments . Our task is to help our young parents, who are the first educators of their children in faith, to realize that the sacraments are a gift given to strengthen our faith in a loving, all-present God. The journey, begun at baptism, continues at a point in their young lives where they can identify with Jesus and the Spirit of God who nourishes, strengthens, and guides them to maturity.

As for all young people, however, children need the continued support of their parents and faith community to encourage them to use the divine gift received through the sacrament to make Jesus real in their and our world.

SACRAMENTAL PROGRAM: The 2022 preparation program begins on Wednesday, 9th February, for parents of children wishing to celebrate the sacraments of Reconciliation, Confirmation and First Eucharist. Registration is essential through the parish office.

C A T H O L I C I S M

Come on a virtual tour with Bishop Robert Barron to many places including Ireland, Calcutta, Uganda and Jerusalem - places steeped in the rich and deep culture that point to the universality of our Catholic Church.

Come and join us over a ‘cuppa’ and enjoy the powerful words of Jesus Christ, the Apostles, Church Fathers and Doctors, Popes, Bishops and Priests, Saints and Martyrs, mystics and theologians, poets and novelists and others. His second focus, in a complementary way, is to show how artists, architects, sculptors, painters and musicians have used their talents to express and convey the beauty of God and His creation, the glory of the Gospel and the mystery of the Church.

The Catholicism series runs for ten weeks and includes topics from:
Amazed and Afraid: The Revelation of God becoming One of Us through to
World Without End: The Last Things

Come and enjoy our Catholic Faith, learning together with this engaging and comprehensive series. And if you like, bring a friend. All Welcome.

Please note Government Covid registration and restrictions will apply.
