Principal’s Reflection

We are all aware of the environmental challenges faced by our many neighbouring countries in the Pacific. They are watching seas rise around them and their productivity decreasing. These are our friends. The islands of Tonga recently faced the consequences of an undersea earthquake. A Tsunami generated by the quake, pushed saltwater over large areas of the islands. The volcanic ash spewing from the volcano covered most of the land mass. This already poor community have been devastated. The Tongan community have strong links to Bundaberg. Shalom has had and continues to have Tongan families in our community. Last week, the Bundaberg Regional Council launched its Tongan Appeal. They had researched ways in which Bundaberg could help through working with Defat, the Australian Military and other NGOs. It became clear that the quickest and most effective way to get immediate aid to Tonga is raising cash and getting that money into the hands of locals who could use it straight away. Through our own Kaufusi family who has a cousin who runs a local school, we can get money to the people who need it most. I would strongly encourage you to be generous. With the Council, we have set up an account that will hold funds raised and pass those onto Father Ekuasi Manu who is Principal of Api Fo’ou Catholic College in Tonga’s capital. Fr Ekuasi, cousin of our own Antonio Kaufusi, said that the school building at Api Fo’ou College itself was spared from major damage, ash and water entered classrooms and tsunami waves crashed onto the school grounds. Fr Ekuasi said the school’s 1300 students, the majority of which come from low-income families, were part of the clean-up effort. “It took us two weeks to clean the ashes from rooftops and roads,” Fr Ekuasi said. “We were able to coordinate these cleaning up campaigns with teachers, ex-students, and parents.” He said the community was grateful to hear of the Bundaberg Region’s support.

How to donate:

Account name: Shalom College
BSB: 034 210
Account Number: 831 772
Reference: TONGA APPEAL

The Regional Council kicked off the appeal with a donation of $10000 and Shalom Markets donated $2000. Please be generous. Monies raised will get directly to families who need help the most.

SIA App - over the weekend all parents will have received an email with log on details for SIA. I strongly encourage you to download this App and use this service. It will give parents really useful alerts – like when a piece of assessment has been marked – when your child has due dates for assessment – and relevant news. This is a big step forward for the College. Please make use of this.

Covid Cases continue to emerge at the College among staff and students. A number of staff are in isolation being deemed ‘close contacts’. Happily, most teachers who have been at home have been well enough to work from home and support their classes via Teams and through SIA. This has worked very well so far. We continue to follow the advice of Queensland Health regarding cleaning requirements. Queensland Health has advised that no quarantine of students or staff is required. As COVID-19 remains active in our community we ask you to continue to monitor your child’s/children’s health and if they develop any flu-like symptoms. Keep your child at home if any symptoms develop.

Seek a PCR or RAT where it is recommended and notify the College of a positive result
Please be aware that a negative Covid test does not change the requirement to be symptom free returning to school
Maintain good hand hygiene
Practice social distancing where possible
Wear masks when required.

Services Club Bingo – each year the College receives approximately $30,000 from this activity. We share proceeds with Bundaberg Surf Lifesaving Club. The Carswell family have run this Bingo for years and it has been tremendous for Shalom. To gain this support we need volunteers who are prepared to give about an hour on a roster every month or so to make tea and coffee and sell raffle tickets. I’m often asked by grateful parents how they might support the College. This would be one very practical and not very demanding way. Please ring Amanda O’Mara (41558103) if you are able to give just a little bit of time to support the College.

Mandatory Punishments are never something I am very fond of supporting. But, we do have a couple of areas where we are clear about the consequences of some behaviour. The first of those is Sexting – or the requesting of inappropriate photos by students, or, sharing of same. A verified instance of this will incur immediate suspension. A second similar infringement may well result in exclusion from the College. The other area that would involve a mandatory response would be vaping. Using, carrying or being in the presence of vapes will result in an immediate five day suspension. I would ask parents to discuss both these issues with their child/ren so that no one will be surprised when the consequences of these actions are implemented.

Student Welfare and Information

I am hoping you find the following information useful. The Year 7s will need assistance as they navigate the workload of assessment and assignments this year.

Teaching Time Management Skills

Teens usually have fairly structured schedules. Their school day and their after-school activities are planned out for them. As a result, many of them don't learn how to manage their time wisely when they have some downtime.

Here are some steps you can take to teach your teen essential time management skills:

Advise your teen to write down his/her schedule

Your teen's time may easily get taken up with video games or social media if not careful. Teach them to schedule their day so they can set aside time for chores, homework, and other responsibilities. Encourage your son or daughter to schedule free time as well, so time doesn't idly pass without feeling like they haven't done anything fun.

Avoid nagging

It can be tempting to nag your teen or offer repeat reminders. But, telling your teen to do their homework or chores repeatedly, reduces their responsibility. Set rules about your expectations and follow through with consequences when necessary.

Encourage your teenager to develop routines

Encourage your teen to establish healthy habits, like doing his or her chores right after school. Once your son or daughter gets into the routine of doing things in a certain order, they won't have to waste time thinking about what to do next.

Give your teen time management tools

Whether it's a planner that your teen writes everything in or an app that manages your teen's schedule, help your teen find the tools that will work best for them. Talk about the importance of creating a schedule and using lists to prioritizing time wisely.

Help them to set goals

Talk to your teen about the personal goals they want to reach. Then, help to identify how much time they will need to work on that goal each day. Whether they want to exercise for 30 minutes 3 times each week or decide to apply for scholarships one Saturday afternoon each month, goal setting is a great way to help manage time.

Help your teen prioritize activities

It's common for teens to have conflicts in their schedules. A basketball game, birthday party, and other social activities may all coincide. Talk to your teen about how to prioritize activities, based on your family’s values and commitments.

Model good time management habits

If you're always running late or you miss a lot of deadlines, your teen will follow suit. Practice managing your own time wisely and show your teen that you can accomplish the most important tasks in any given day.

Set limits on electronics

Your teen may waste countless hours on social media or playing video games if they are not careful. Establish rules that help to create healthy habits with mobile phones and other digital devices.

Encourage your teen to practice time management skills. There will be times that they are going to miscalculate how long a project will take or days when they forget a deadline. Help them to learn from those mistakes, and remember, “Rome wasn't built in a day”.

Punctuality

It is important that students arrive in time for school. If you are unable to have your child here on time, can I ask you to write a brief note of explanation in their Record Book please otherwise on their report it will show as an unexplained absence.

Wearing of Sports Uniforms

There may be some exceptional circumstances whereby a student may need to wear a sports uniform instead of the formal uniform: full leg braces, full leg plaster casts, broken arms which may make it hard to do up buttons or trouser flies etc.

Can I ask that you contact your child’s House Coordinator to seek permission? In some cases, the formal uniform could still be worn but a uniform pass for the shoes may be needed.

We look at all cases individually.

Year 12 Formal Information

A letter was emailed to all Year 12 Parents on Thursday 17 February with some detailed information. Please read carefully and respond where necessary.

I will be asking for student arrival times and table groupings (mentioned in the letter) closer to the end of this term.

Curriculum

Improvement Plan

For 2022 we have identified specific areas for improvement across the College, these include to:

  • implement the prayer project
  • develop a whole school pedagogical framework
  • analyse and use data to inform student improvement
  • improve writing by the use of a common language - cognitive verbs, and the use of sentence writing strategies from Write That Essay
  • improve student attendance
  • have 80% of Year 7-10 improve their GPA in Core subjects by 0.5 by the end of the year

You will notice many of these goals are interconnected. Student attendance correlates directly with engagement, success in the classroom and with academic improvement. By analysis and examination of performance data together the teacher, student and parents can easily set goals and/or targets for improvement. Using a consistent framework around the language used in our teaching and learning and in assessment ensure students have a clear understanding of the skills required for success. All these things go hand in hand in providing a strong foundation for improvement and success in learning.

Year 11 Information

On Friday a letter was emailed to students and parents outlining information relating to changes in the management of assessment for students under the new QCAA system. Please take the time to discuss this information with your student so that they are clear about the expectations around assessment, QCE and ATAR attainment.

Year 11 students who do not have their myQCE Learning Account set up and registered were email directly with step by step instructions on how to complete this task. All senior students are expected to have this account set up by Tuesday 22 February. Please check you student has this set up.

Sia provides the tools for you to take part in your child's learning journey and our school community. Staff, students, parents and groups can communicate in one place improving the flow of information, fostering teamwork and connecting people throughout our school community.

Last week, you would have received a letter with instructions on how to access Sia. The login details were emailed to all parents/ carers over the weekend, Sia gives you access to all the information you need including links to your child’s assessment due dates, assessment results and teacher comments, timetables, co-curricular groups and resources such as the school calendar – all with one login.

Best of all, Sia has a phone app associated with it (a preview is above on the right)! This allows easy access for parents to be able to catch up with school news, see your child’s results, email absences to the school etc, all while having coffee on the lounge!

Our students have been using Sia in their classes in 2021 and we are super-excited that Sia has now been rolled out to parents. We hope you are excited as well!

Year 12 Exam Block – 25 February – 1 March

Year 12 students will participate in an exam block from 25 February – 1 March. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached. Please note this is a change from the original dates advertised on the school calendar. It was decided to move the exam block a little later to accommodate the delayed start to the school year.

Students participating in this exam block will undergo Unit 3 assessment. This assessment is summative and as such will contribute towards the ATAR score. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.

During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.

Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block.

We wish our students all the best with their studies.

2022 Immunisation program for Year 7 and Year 10

COVID vaccines are NOT part of the School Program

School Immunisation Program & COVID-19 Vaccination

Please be advised that the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) have updated their clinical advice regarding the timeframes between the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines and other vaccines, including routine childhood and adolescent vaccines delivered as part of the School Immunisation Program.

The guidance is that there is no longer a required timeframe to wait between the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines and other vaccines. This means if your child has a COVID-19 vaccine planned for a similar time to the vaccines given as part of the School Immunisation Program they can be co-administered (that is, given on the same day.)

Please find information below from ATAGI regarding clinical guidance on the use of COVID-19 vaccine in Australia in 2022 and timing of administration of other vaccines, including influenza vaccine.

Australian Government Department of Health Clinical recommendations for COVID-19 Vaccines Timing of administration of other vaccines

Visit the link or see copy of information below:

https://www.health.gov.au/initiatives-and-programs/covid-19-vaccines/advice-for-providers/clinical-guidance/clinical-recommendations

COVID-19 vaccines can be co-administered (that is, given on the same day) with an influenza vaccine. Studies demonstrate the safety and immunogenicity of co-administration of COVID-19 and influenza vaccines.

COVID-19 vaccines can also be co-administered with other vaccines if required. This includes routine childhood and adolescent vaccines. The benefits of ensuring timely vaccination and maintaining high vaccine uptake outweigh any potential risks associated with immunogenicity, local adverse reactions or fever.

There is limited evidence on the safety and effectiveness of co-administering COVID-19 vaccines at the same time as other vaccines. Providers need to balance the opportunistic need for co-administration with giving the vaccines on separate visits. There is the potential for an increase in mild to moderate adverse

events when more than one vaccine is given at the same time. Co-administration or near administration (e.g. within days) with another vaccine may also make it challenging to attribute potential adverse events. Providers should ensure that parents/guardians of young children receiving COVID-19 vaccines are aware of the increased potential for local reactions.

If you have any queries regarding this information, please don’t hesitate to contact your local Ozcare School Immunisation Program Team.

Shalom College is participating in Queensland Health’s annual School Immunisations Program. All Year 7 and Year 10 students will be offered free vaccinations as recommended on the National Immunisation schedule to protect against vaccine preventable diseases. In 2022, Year 7 students will be offered human papillomavirus (HPV) and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (whooping cough) vaccination. Year 10 students will be offered meningococcal ACWY vaccination.

The consent cards will be given to all our current year 7 students via House Coordinators/PC Teachers early in Term 1. Participating students are required to return the completed forms to Student reception by today, 14 February. Any late forms will need to be returned to Ozcare directly. Only students with a signed and completed consent card, indicating ‘Yes to Vaccination’ will be vaccinated.

The Public Health Act 2005 requires the school principal to disclose student and parent information for eligible Year 7 and Year 10 students to the school immunisation provider if requested. This information will enable the school immunisation provider to determine those who have and have not consented, and directly follow-up with parents of students who have not returned a consent card. This direct follow-up ensures all parents are offered the opportunity for their child to participate in this important school health program. It may also assist you in making decisions about your child’s immunisation needs.

Parents or legal guardians who have indicated ‘No to Vaccination’ will not be followed up by the provider.

School immunisation providers will be bound to comply with the Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld). This Act stipulates the requirements for the secure collection, use, storage and disposal of personal information to be followed by school health program providers.

The vaccinations will be conducted by a team of authorised registered nurses and/or a medical practitioner. Parents or legal guardians are encouraged to ensure their children have an adequate breakfast on the morning of vaccination.

Instrumental Music

Activity around the band room in the Performing Arts Precinct has ramped up considerably in our “second” week of school. Students have begun their instrumental lessons and have been putting their mind to what it is they would like to achieve this year. We are helping the students develop intentional goals that they ‘own’. By making conscious choices with what to do with their time and energy, skill and potential, students will become a responsible partner in their learning outcomes

We are preparing our ensembles for the concert on Sunday 27 March at 3:00 pm in the PAP theatre. This will be the year “opening” concert where all groups present their first piece. It is truly a time of celebration for our school community where we can gather to witness the power of creative cooperative youth culture making music together.

Individuals and small groups are also starting to prepare for the Bundaberg Eisteddfod commencing Friday 29 April. If your child shows any interest in pursuing a challenging activity, please encourage them to mention it to a music teacher. We love extending students, supporting their aspirations, and guiding their wild spirited ways.

Everyone has 24 hours at their disposal each day. What each individual does with their precious time is up to them. We can only hope and pray our talented young people who are involved in our College music program, taking on this extra commitment, see the wisdom in planning out their week, making wise choices and taking the ‘long view’, rather than accept the shallow joys in instant gratification.

Patient practice provides potential that precedes perfect performance.

Postscript. The unusual photo of an empty chair in an open doorway is meant to say “the door is always open for any student from any background, skill, knowledge or experience level to come join our most excellent adventure in music! We are saving a chair for them.”

From the Library

“Life can be beautiful if you make it beautiful. It is up to you.”

A new acquisition in the senior non-fiction collection is the story of Eddie Jaku, a German Jew who in November 1938 was arrested and put into a concentration camp.

Eddie was beaten and starved and was at first held in Buchenwald and then in Auschwitz. He was part of the gruesome Nazi death march as well.

Despite this suffering, or perhaps because of it, Eddie vowed to smile every day and as a result he believes himself to be the ‘happiest man on earth.’

On turning 100, Eddie decided to share his story and his beautiful perspective on life as a tribute to the many who did not survive. This lovely book is a celebration of his strength in the face of adversity and a reminder to all of us to find our joy wherever we can.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers

At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.

Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.

For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.

Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).

No experience required!

"VISITATION IN THE CATHOLIC PARISH OF BUNDABERG"

Marcia Sharp
Visitation Co-Ordinator

Our Parish has approximately forty Visitation Ministry Volunteers and five Chaplains who visit on a weekly basis parishioners in eight Nursing Homes, three Hospitals as well as Parishioners restricted to their own homes.

The Priests regularly celebrate Anointing and Mass in the Nursing homes and visit Parishioners in hospitals and their homes.

We celebrate a monthly Anointing Mass at Holy Rosary followed by a morning tea hosted by the CWL.

The sick and elderly are sometimes prevented from celebrating the Mass with the rest of the parish community. It is during these times that members of the Visitation Ministry are able to bring communion to them, and provide them with the sacrament which brings life, comfort and healing. They are also reunited with the Eucharistic community from which illness has separated them.

Unfortunately, due to COVID vaccinations we have had some volunteers stand down. Thank you to the Parishioners who answered the call and volunteered. We need everyone to keep their ears

and eyes open. If there is someone you know is unable to attend Mass, please phone the Parish Office 4151 6666

Fr. Peter states regularly ‘how vital’ this Ministry is to our Parish especially in these times.

Our Lord said, “I was sick and you visited Me,” and the presence of our loving priests and volunteers remind the residents and patients that they are never forgotten and remain treasured members of the church community.

A VISITATION PRAYER

Loving and Compassionate God,
In haste Mary set out to visit her cousin, Elizabeth.
She was attentive to the needs of another without regard for herself.
May I learn to be more attentive to the needs of others in my life.
May I serve others with love and care out of my love for You.
May I never tire of praising You and sharing Your goodness with others.
Amen.

C A T H O L I C I S M

Come on a virtual tour with Bishop Robert Barron to many places including Ireland, Calcutta, Uganda and Jerusalem - places steeped in the rich and deep culture that point to the universality of our Catholic Church.

Come and join us over a ‘cuppa’ and enjoy the powerful words of Jesus Christ, the Apostles, Church Fathers and Doctors, Popes, Bishops and Priests, Saints and Martyrs, mystics and theologians, poets and novelists and others. His second focus, in a complementary way, is to show how artists, architects, sculptors, painters and musicians have used their talents to express and convey the beauty of God and His creation, the glory of the Gospel and the mystery of the Church.

The Catholicism series runs for ten weeks and includes topics from:
· Amazed and Afraid: The Revelation of God becoming One of Us through to
· World Without End: The Last Things

Come and enjoy our Catholic Faith, learning together with this engaging and comprehensive series. And if you like, bring a friend. All Welcome.

Please note Government Covid registration and restrictions will apply.
