Principal’s Reflection

To all of our mothers and those many others who fill that role, I hope you had a great weekend. Good mothers are irreplaceable and should be celebrated. Take a moment to read this reflection –

My Appraisal – my current contract at Shalom concludes at the end of 2023. To inform a discussion about whether or not I might continue at Shalom, I have an Appraisal process. There is a survey to that effect to be emailed in the coming week. It will go to a representative sample from the Shalom community. That list is not meant to be exclusive and if you would like to participate, please email Mr Stephen Dale by Wednesday of this week and one will be forwarded to you.

Parents & Friends AGM was held last week. Mr Paul Wilkinson, who has led our P&F well very well for the past five years, decided to step down from the position. We are very grateful to Paul for his diligent and professional leadership of the group. The new P&F Executive is:

President – Nicole Heinz
Vice President – Lynda Crossett
Secretary – Kylie Hanson
Treasurer – Emma Jensen

School TV this month – Screen Time. As a result of the global pandemic, there has been a noticeable shift in the amount of time people spend on screen-based devices. Families are transitioning back to pre-COVID routines but many are still struggling to re-establish the boundaries and rules around screen use. Some continue to deal with digital conflict and tech-tantrums on a daily basis. The latest research found that 77% of teenagers spend more than five hours on screens per day, but it is important to note that not all screen time is considered equal.

Parents play a crucial role in modelling a positive and healthy approach to using screens and assisting children to navigate the content they watch. It is better to model and mentor screen use, rather than monitor it. Children tend to do more of what they see us do, and less of what we tell them to do. However, it is still important to outline the risks and highlight the benefits of screen use to ensure you keep a balanced attitude. Encourage discussions around the issues that people experience in monitoring their screen time and be honest about your own difficulties.

Parents need to remain firm in their approach to managing screen time. Excessive screen time can be detrimental to a child’s overall wellbeing. Ensuring the correct privacy settings are in place is vital to prevent children from being inadvertently exposed to inappropriate content or online predators. Parents need to also be mindful of the potential impact screen time can have on a child’s social, emotional, educational, behavioural, and even physical domains.

In this edition of SchoolTV, care-givers will be provided with a range of guidelines and strategies to help manage screen time at home. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.

If you do have any concerns about the wellbeing of your child, please contact the school for further information or seek medical or professional help.

Student Pick Up – Can I remind everyone of a few things – The only place to collect students in the Admin carpark is in front of Admin. Please, no collection on the vacant land on the right of Br Hogan Drive.

Similarly, please do not impinge on our neighbours by collecting students at the Church opposite us in Fitzgerald St or in Edenbrook Estate.

Be patient in picking up and dropping off. Alternate entry of cars in converging lanes is good for everyone.

If you are able to delay pick up until 3.15pm, both carparks are much emptier

Student Welfare and Information

I hope all mothers in our community had a lovely Mothers’ Day.

Formal

A reminder that all payments are due today. Please note that a ticket for students must also be purchased. I hope mothers and fathers are being taught the waltz the students have been learning these past few weeks.

We need many “helping hands” on a night such as this and I am incredibly grateful to the staff, Year 11s and the Year 10s who have offered assistance – either beforehand or on the night.

The student arrivals and red-carpet walk will be live streamed.

Absences and Punctuality

We continue to monitor this. It is important that students are at school; it is equally important that students arrive on time. If they are late for any reason, a note from a parent/caregiver is required. Some of our student drivers are arriving late to school so they will be required to bring a note the next day.

Recycling News

Our “Containers for Change” recycling of popper juice cartons, milk cartons and milk plastic bottles is going very well this year. Our students have been recycling these containers quite diligently. At last count we had raised $467.00 which we are donating to the Edmund Rice Camp group.

Well done to our students, particularly the junior grades.

Curriculum

NAPLAN

Testing will begin this week. The tests will run across the following days: Wednesday 11, Friday 13, Monday 16 and Wednesday 18 May. Catch up sessions will be run on Thursday 12, Tuesday 17 and Thursday 19 May.

The timetable for the testing is as follows:

We ask that all students try their best in the testing so that we have accurate information. The results from testing are used in conjunction with other data to assess individual and cohort strengths as well as areas to improve on. We review existing initiatives and develop teaching programs to support students based on the data.

Earphones are compulsory for NAPLAN testing. Students who present to the test session with bluetooth earphones or without earphones, will be sold a set - $6 charged to the students’ account. We urged all students to keep the earphones in their pencil case ready for testing sessions. The uniform shop has a small supply of earphones for $6. Earphones must have a 3.5mm standard jack. See images below. Wireless/bluetooth earphones (e.g. Apple air pods) are not compatible.

If you wish to withdraw your student from NAPLAN testing, please contact Megan Munckton, Middle School Coordinator, megan_munckton@shalomcollege.com.

Administration

Year 11 Exam Block 20 May – 24 May

Year 11 students will participate in an exam block from Friday 20 May – Tuesday 24 May. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.

During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.

Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block.

We wish our students all the best with their studies.

Important Change to School Calendar - Year 11 Home Study Day (27 May) Cancelled

Please note that the school calendar has Friday 27 May, the day after the Show holiday, labelled as a Home Study Day for Year 11&12. With the interrupted start to the year, the school has decided to make this a Home Study Day for Year 12 only. Year 11s are expected to attend school and classes as normal on this day.

Learner Conferences (Parent-Teacher Interviews) – Tuesday 24 May 3.30pm-6.30pm

Learner Conferences for all Year 7-12 subjects (other than Yr7/8 Core Studies) will be conducted in the Sports Centre from 3:30pm to 6.30pm on Tuesday 24 May 2022. Interviews will be of ten minutes duration.

Learner Conferences will open for parent bookings through Sia - Parent Lounge - PT Interviews at 8:00am on Tuesday 10 May and close at 3:00pm on Thursday 19 May.

Our teachers work hard to provide detailed feedback through Sia. This information is valuable, and parents are encouraged to take the time to review their child’s assessment through Sia - My Students - Grades as shown below prior to the interviews. If you are having trouble logging into Sia, please contact Shalom IT.

Students are encouraged to attend interviews along with their parents. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

The Award's purpose is to encourage innovation and entrepreneurship, by helping students in the Bundaberg Region unlock their problem-solving potential and take their big technology ideas to the next level.

The main aims of The Mayor’s Telstra Innovation Awards are to:

Nurture the knowledge base that exists among the young people of our region

Inspire students to be innovative and collaborative

Highlight the importance of study in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) fields for the future of the Bundaberg Region – building a knowledge-based economy.

Aquatic Practices Excursions

Aquatic Practices students have been on a spate of excursions at the start of Term 2.

Year 12 Aquatic Practices participated in a 1770 LARC trip in week one as part of our Turtles and Shorelines unit. While the excursion had a historical focus on Bustard Bay and the lighthouse, it also enabled students to observe different beach and dune formations along the beach between Seventeen Seventy and Bustard Head, including boarding on a sand blow at Jenny Lind Creek.

As part of this unit, Year 12 students also visited the Mon Repos Turtle Centre where Ranger Tanja did a fantastic job in explaining the importance of Mon Repos Conservation Park, how it is managed, her role as a Ranger, and the life of marine turtles nesting at Mon Repos. This information will be vital for students’ assessment task where they role-play a Ranger delivering an informative presentation to tourists at Mon Repos.

Both Year 11 and Year 12 Aquatic Practices also ‘caught up’ on their much-anticipated Lady Musgrave Island excursion in week two. This excursion had been postponed from early in Term One due to continued inclement weather. Year 12 participated as it built on their knowledge and understanding of the Great Barrier Reef (their previous unit of work). Year 11 participated as it gave them the opportunity to apply their snorkelling skills from their first unit in an open water setting. Anyone who has been to Lady Musgrave will know what a fantastic location it is!! The glass-bottom boat and the island walk were both informative and engaging, but the highlight was definitely the snorkelling. The water was extremely clear, and snorkellers sighted approximately a dozen different turtles, along with a good sized grouper and a myriad other reef fish, sealife and numerous species of coral.

Thanks go to our hosts – Kev our guide and Wyanda our skipper on the 1770 LARC Tours, Tanja from Mon Repos Turtle Centre, and the crew on the Lady Musgrave Experience. Thanks also to parents / carers for paying for the excursion(s)!! We appreciate they can be a financial burden, but we aim to offer a variety of different and engaging first-hand educational experiences for the students.

From the Library

Suffering a trauma such as a natural disaster can evoke strong, upsetting feelings in a child, and can potentially disturb their development, and their ability to function in their daily lives. All children will inherently possess some strengths to help them adjust and recover from traumatic events. At the same time, some children who experience a traumatic event may be significantly affected.

But the beauty of the child mind is the ability to develop strength and resilience in the face of tragedy.

A powerful and inspirational fiction series has been added to the Junior fiction collection, called “Through My Eyes: Natural Disaster Zones”. This series, edited by Lyn White and written by various authors, tells the stories of children who have lived through major disaster and the impact that it has had on their lives. The messages of resilience, hope, and courage delivered through the juvenile perspective gives an insight into these challenging incidents and the environment and culture of each situation.

Winner of the Best Educational Picture or Chapter Book Category at the 2019 Educational Publishing Awards, the stories include the 2019 Tasmanian bushfires, the 2013 typhoon that struck the Philippines, the 2011 Christchurch earthquake, and the ensuing earthquake and tsunami in Omori-wan, Japan.

These add to the existing series which highlight disaster of a more human kind; the war in Afghanistan, the drug wars in Mexico, the tragedy of Myanmar, the border wars of Kashmir, civil war in Somalia as well as Sri Lanka, and the revolution in Syria.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers

At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.

Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.

For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.

Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).

No experience required!

MOTHERS DAY

by: Joe McCorley

This is the Day we pay tribute and thanksgiving to all Mothers.
A mother’s love is endless, patient, unselfish, joyful and enduring.
A mother’s love and devotion to her children can also mean many sacrifices and sufferings at times.

From my own observations, I have been blessed with the lived experiences of two mothers, my own mother and the mother of our five children. Also, my career in education for sixty years brought me into contact with many devoted mothers who always wanted the best education for their children.

As I reflected on these observations, I came to the conclusion that the major component of a mother’s love is SELFLESSNESS! Many mothers model the heart of Jesus in the way he surrendered himself for the sake of love. Jesus lived and died by his teaching of “dying to self to become fully alive!”

As Cynthia Bourgeault writes:
“He horrified the prim and proper by dining with tax collectors and prostitutes; John’s (the Baptist) disciples disapproved of him for drinking and banqueting; the Pharisees disapproved of him for healing on the Sabbath. But Jesus went his way, giving himself fully into life and death, losing himself, squandering himself, gambling away every gift God bestows.” The life of Jesus was love utterly poured out!
For me, this is the selfless love many mothers model for their children.

I relive often the memory of my mother’s dying wish. She called each of us children, one by one, into her bedroom, and her command to me:
“Now, Joseph, when I die, I don’t want any tears. My funeral Mass has to be a great joyful celebration……….for this, is what I have lived all my life for!”

Finally, his love took Jesus to his death on the Cross. Among his last words from the Cross, were his words to his Mother Mary, standing below the Cross:
“Woman, this is your son.” And to his beloved disciple: “John, this is your mother.”

As a result, we are confident we now have a heavenly Mother, who intercedes to her Son for us. I believe Mary continues to give us the same challenge she gave the waiters who ran out of wine at the wedding in Cana:

“DO WHATEVER HE TELLS YOU!”

Happy Mothers Day to all Mothers in our Parish
