Principal’s Reflection

Two weeks ago was the feast day of Edmund Rice. Shalom began through the work of the Christian Brothers, the Religious Order that Edmund began when he started doing something for really poor kids in Ireland. There aren’t a lot of Christian Brothers left around the world and, like most Religious Orders, are working hard to adapt their Mission to a very different world. The article below was sent to me on Edmund’s feast day about the work the Brothers are doing in Ireland for some of the thousands of Ukrainian refugees who have been welcomed into that small country. Reading it, I felt just a little bit disappointed about how much Australia does for the displaced and dispossessed given our relative wealth.

SIA Videos & Reports – I am very appreciative of the feedback parents have shared with me about the proposal to free up teachers from writing Report comments on Semester reports. This is a possibility given that parents are getting much better feedback, generally, now on SIA. Through the comments I’ve received, it has highlighted that we need to provide parents with a bit more help in unlocking all the benefits of SIA and the SIA App. To that end, some ‘How To’ videos have been created for parents and can be found at the links below. I discovered recently that for some feedback from my kids’ teachers that the SIA is much easier to read on a laptop or desktop rather than the App.

NAPLAN

Testing will continue this week with the last two test areas: Conventions of Language and Numeracy. The tests will run across the following days: Monday 16th and Wednesday 18th. Catch up sessions for students will be run on Tuesday 17th and Thursday 19th May.

We ask that all students try their best in the testing so that we have accurate information. The results from testing are used in conjunction with other data to assess individual and cohort strengths as well as areas to improve on. We review existing initiatives and develop teaching programs to support students based on the data.

Earphones are compulsory for NAPLAN testing. Students who present to the test session with Bluetooth earphones or without earphones, will be sold a set - $6 charged to the students’ account. We urged all students to keep the earphones in their pencil case ready for testing sessions. The uniform shop has a small supply of earphones for $6. Earphones must have a 3.5mm standard jack. See images below. Wireless/bluetooth earphones (e.g. Apple air pods) are not compatible.

If you wish to withdraw your student from NAPLAN testing, please contact Megan Munckton, Middle School Coordinator, megan_munckton@shalomcollege.com.

Attendance for Assessment

Attendance for all assessment tasks is compulsory for all students as outlined in our Assessment Policy. A reminder that students who complete Pathway programs are expected to make the necessary arrangements to ensure their attendance at the College for all their scheduled exams.

AARA applications can be made for illness and misadventure (outlined on page 15 of Student Record Book). Please remember as per QCAA Policy and Procedures students are not eligible for AARA for matters that a student/parent could avoid, or for matters of their own choosing e.g. driving lessons/driving tests, family holidays.

Year 12 Results Confirmation

This week Year 12 students will start to receive their confirmed result for their first summative piece of assessment (General Subjects). Class teachers will discuss these with students once they have been released for each subject.

Year 11 Exam Block 20 May – 24 May

Year 11 students will participate in an exam block from Friday 20 May – Tuesday 24 May. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.

During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.

Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block.

We wish our students all the best with their studies.

Important Change to School Calendar - Year 11 Home Study Day (27 May) Cancelled

Please note that the school calendar has Friday 27 May, the day after the Show holiday, labelled as a Home Study Day for Year 11&12. With the interrupted start to the year, the school has decided to make this a Home Study Day for Year 12 only. Year 11s are expected to attend school and classes as normal on this day.

Learner Conferences (Parent-Teacher Interviews) – Tuesday 24 May 3.30pm-6.30pm

Learner Conferences for all Year 7-12 subjects (other than Yr7/8 Core Studies) will be conducted in the Sports Centre from 3:30pm to 6.30pm on Tuesday 24th May 2022. Interviews will be of ten minutes duration.

Learner Conferences will open for parent bookings through Sia - Parent Lounge - PT Interviews at 8:00am on Tuesday 10 May and close at 3:00pm on Thursday 19 May.

Our teachers work hard to provide detailed feedback through Sia. This information is valuable, and parents are encouraged to take the time to review their child’s assessment through Sia - My Students - Grades as shown below prior to the interviews. If you are having trouble logging into Sia, please contact Shalom IT.

Students are encouraged to attend interviews along with their parents. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Mission

Prayer at Shalom College

Some of our Catholic prayers are difficult for students to understand let alone relate to, however they contain such beautiful themes and concepts. Students may be able to recite traditional prayers but not even know what they are saying. Our challenge is to bring Catholic prayer to our College community in an engaging way. Sounds so easy – not.

Last year in Term 2 a small team of interested staff at Shalom gathered to prepare to begin the Prayer Project. We decided to focus our efforts on Prayer at the start of each class. This is something all teachers are asked to do at Shalom, regardless of the subject.

As we have a 4 lesson day, we decided to be quite specific in what type of prayer was said in which lesson. At the beginning of the day a prayer is said over the speaker system. The entire school stops for this. So this prayer would be a spoken prayer (obviously), also we and control over these prayers to ensure they were Catholic but relatable. A mix of traditional and modern could be used and they could be linked to the Church calendar. Modern prayers need to have a Catholic element.

Period 2 Prayer would also be a spoken prayer, Period 3 would provide some variety with songs, mini meditations or reflections, and Period 4 would be a simplified version of the Ignatian reflection. This way we ensure students are exposed to a range of prayers.

So we really are in the very early stages of implementing this process. During Term 2 we will re survey staff and students to ascertain the impact. I imagine there will be teething issues, but it is worth giving it a go.

UNIQ You

Shalom is excited to be participating in an exciting new service that gives girls the opportunity to be part of a revolutionary initiative that will demystify industries where women are under-represented in many sectors - tech, transport, electricity and gas, construction, mining, aviation, water and sewage, agriculture, manufacturing, military and defence.

UNIQ You gives young women access to honest insights from women who were once just like them. Our partnership with UNIQ You allows Year 9 to 12 girls, to have a 30-minute, one-on-one video call with female advisers from all around Australia. View the 3-minute promotional video here:

From the Library

Australia’s black summer was a tragic time for all Australia, the horrendous and relentless bush fires of the summer of 2019-2020 ranged from the tallest mountain ranges to coastal communities, grasslands and farms, and towns and suburbs. The flames easily traversed roads and rivers ferociously consuming the built-up combustible material from a long dry period and generating a layer of thick smoke that would stretch to New Zealand.

Fighting spirit: a tribute to the bushfire-affected communities of Australia’s Black Summer was funded jointly by the Australian Government National Recovery and Resilience Agency and News Corp Australia with royalties going to BlazeAid. It is a beautifully presented pictorial social record of the devastation, unashamedly portraying the tragedy as well as the beauty, the ferocity and the comradery, and the bravery of those directly involved. Peppered through the book is background information and personal accounts from the perspectives of the homeowners, the fire fighters, and the brave individuals attempted to rescue and care for our threatened fauna.

A fire inside: the power of the human help reflex, a collection of photographs by award winning photographer Matthew Abbott is as much a social commentary of a horrendous moment in Australian’s natural history as it is an exploration of the human condition and our reflexive desire to lend a helping hand. This book offers the accounts of witnesses to the tragedy as well as insights from anthropologists and psychologists.

Shalom Tennis Success

On 4 May, 18 tennis players represented Shalom in the Regional Finals of the Queensland Secondary Schools Teams Tennis (QSSTT) Event. The team coaches of Mr Hubbard, Mrs Wilson and myself were very proud to see the number of representatives participating from Shalom – by far the largest team in the region.

The Open Boys team of Taj Wilson, Zain Ali, Lachlan Campbell and Lachlan Royan and the Open Girls team of Katie Maher, Poppy Loeskow, Sophie Maher and Emily Downs automatically qualified for the State Finals. With several Wide Bay representatives in these teams, they are sure to be competitive at the next stage of competition.

This year, the organisers introduced a new division for Year 7-9 students. To win through to the next stage, both the boy’s team and the girls team had to beat opposition from Discovery Christian College. The boy’s team of Xander White, Harrison Keightley, Nicolas Cocking, Will Savage and Jake Wall comfortably beat a quality opposition to win 5 rubbers to 1. The girls had a tougher road, only sealing the win in the last match. The girl’s team of Lara Bemet, Sithuki Weerasinghe, Laura Davenport and Megan Cefai eventually won 4 rubbers to 2 – an excellent result.

As well as these players, Shalom is fortunate to have some young guns waiting in the wings. A second Year 7-9 Shalom team of Oscar Buckley, Ethan Vincent, Fynn Loeskow, Dylan Ashley, Ryan Anderson and Hunter Heidke as well as Open players such as Elijah Vincent and Jacob O’Brien are all fine players as well – a testament to the depth we currently have at Shalom.

The qualifying teams will now travel to Rockhampton on the 20/21 June to compete against the best schools from each region around Queensland. This will be a challenging event and will certainly be lots of fun.

2022 Catholic Schools Race Day Report

Our 17th annual Catholic Schools Race Day, held on Saturday 12 March at Thabeban Park Race Course, was a great success. Tickets into our Marquee area, capped at 350 were sold out during the week leading up to the event. This year’s theme, Feathers, Frills and Finery created extra flare and glamour to the day’s atmosphere. That, coupled with a perfect day weatherwise, ensured the entire marquee was full of smiles all day.

The afternoon kicked off with the Fashion Parade hosted again this year by the ladies from Sanshells Boutique of Bargara. The ladies put on a great show and were applauded loudly by the very appreciative crowd.

Everyone in our Marquee who were dressed according to our theme were automatic entrants into our Annual Pam Hansen Fashion Awards and the winners were very happy to be rewarded for their special effort in glamouring up for the day.

The marquee’s atmosphere was also enhanced by the talented artists on the stage performing their versions of popular songs in the background throughout the day.

This year we also welcomed the Loyola Ladies who used our event to celebrate 40 years since their school was closed in 1982. In two years, we hope to welcome them back to celebrate 40 years since they completed Year 12 at Shalom in 1984, Shalom’s inaugural year.

Food and drinks were in plentiful supply. The fantastic team of volunteers from the Shalom Catering again supplied a tasty array of appetisers and canapes throughout the day. This team have been doing this for over ten years now and they always deliver the highest quality food and at a very low cost. This year they were assisted with the generosity of Dominos Pizzas with their donation of 50 pizzas to compliment the range produced by the Shalom Team. The volunteer team behind the Bar and selling drink tickets again did a fantastic job ensuring attendees were served their favourite thirst quencher in a speedy manner.

Another major feature of the day, which is a great contributor to the money raised is our Raffle. Over $5,000 in Raffle prizes were donated by our generous sponsors and $4,395 worth of tickets were sold on the day. One of our best results. An enormous amount of work by members of our committee went into getting this pool of prizes together from the many charitable donors.

The money raised on the day, $17,000+, has been distributed and has already been put to good causes. The first $2,000 was donated to The Tongan Disaster Appeal. The remaining funds were distributed and $5,000 each was given to our Primary Schools. St Joseph’s allocated their funds to the purchase of special equipment to support students, St Patrick’s allotted their funds towards a school Camp Kitchen facility and St Mary’s are building a Sacred Space. This place will include a yarning circle of seats for people to talk and share, a small bridge connecting the area to a labyrinth which will enable people to contemplate and meditate and also have some native plants to ensure we have a connection to the land.

As a committee, it is so wonderful to see the money being raised going towards such valuable causes, especially in the assistance annually to the enhancement of the education of our Primary School students.

Finally, I’d like to thank everyone who was involved in the event, Committee, Sponsors, Volunteer Teachers, Staff and Students and Parents. This annual Catholic Schools event is an enjoyable day on our calendar and we are already looking forward to next year’s event scheduled for Saturday 11 March, 2023.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers

At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.

Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.

For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.

Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).

No experience required!
