Principal’s Reflection
For those of you with younger children at St Joseph’s, you have already read this reflection. I have unashamedly stolen this from the reflection shared by Principal Monica White this week. I’ve read this before but I certainly believe it is worth sharing. For educators and parents, it has a great message –
Service Awards – at our Assembly last week, Assistant Director, Stephen Dale was on hand to present service awards to a number of our long serving and very dedicated staff. We are lucky at Shalom to have such an experienced and committed staff. Awards were given to the staff pictured below:
Stephen Dale with Ann Benson (24 years), Kim
O’Shea-Hard (20 Years in leadership), Jenny Wedemeyer (50 years), Karen
Miller-Smith (20 years), Helen Stanley (40 years), Mary Taylor (30 years)
and Brendan Maher (23 years).
Absent: Brett Hoskins (21 years) and Cheryl Peterson (21 years).
NAPLAN is done and dusted for another year. I am very grateful to Ms Megan Munckton for the hours of work she has put in to ensure this process went smoothly for our young people. More importantly, I look forward to the useful data that will be shared as a result of the testing.
Learner Conferences are on for students in Yr 10-12 tomorrow night. If possible, have your daughter or son in attendance for these meetings.
SIA App – our data would suggest that we have only had about 40% of eligible parents at Shalom download the App. I would strongly encourage all to do so. The App gives parents a much better and easier path for communication. I love immediately being able to see my kids’ results as soon as they are posted. As well, notifications of upcoming assessments or school activities are really useful. In last week’s Newsletter, there were really handy videos that will assist parents making the most of SIA.
The Shalom Formal is on Saturday evening. Undoubtedly, it will be another wonderful event and a very proud moment for parents. Every best wish to all involved.

Student Welfare and Information
Punctuality in school life builds the path to success in a student's life by enabling them to plan ahead, making an efficient routine, and be prepared for their tasks. A punctual student is better equipped to deal with their day-to-day tasks than a person who leaves it for the last moment.
Develops long-term positive habits – when students show up on time to school every day, they develop the habit of being punctual with important commitments.
Tardiness affects not only your child's attendance record and ability to learn, but it also interrupts other students' learning as the teacher and students stop whilst the student makes their way to their seat.
Student Guide: Six Tips for Being Punctual
- Adopt a New Mindset. ...
- Plan in Advance. ...
- Pack Ahead. ...
- Leave Time for Delays. ...
- Set the Clock Ahead. ...
- Go to Bed on Time.
There will always be extenuating circumstances where late to school is unavoidable and not a regular occurrence but, often I am seeing the same students arriving late. Can I ask that you write a brief note in your child’s Record Book indicating the reason they have come in late. That way I am assured hat you are aware of their lateness.
You will find that over the next few weeks either your child’s House Coordinator, or myself, will be in contact with you about absences that are unexplained, absences that are far too frequent or punctuality if that is an issue. All absences need an explanation. Absences due to illness are always taken into account.
FORMAL:
Nearly there now……
- Parents – you will need your tickets on the night – they will be scanned at the door.
- Parents have a separate entrance to the students.
- The arrivals of the students will be live streamed into the ballroom
- Best to make your way into the ballroom and sit in comfort to watch the students arrive.
It will be a wonderful night and one we are all looking forward to.

Year 11 Exam Block 20 May – 24 May
Year 11 students will participate in an exam block from Friday 20 May – Tuesday 24 May. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.
During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.
Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.
Important Change to School Calendar - Year 11 Home Study Day (27 May) Cancelled
Please note that the school calendar has Friday 27 May, the day after the Show holiday, labelled as a Home Study Day for Year 11&12. With the interrupted start to the year, the school has decided to make this a Home Study Day for Year 12 only. Year 11s are expected to attend school and classes as normal on this day.
Learner Conferences (Parent-Teacher Interviews) – Tuesday 24 May 3.30pm-6.30pm
Learner Conferences for all Year 7-12 subjects (other than Yr7/8 Core Studies) will be conducted in the Sports Centre from 3:30pm to 6.30pm on Tuesday 24th May 2022. Interviews will be of ten minutes duration and bookings are now closed.
Our teachers work hard to provide detailed feedback through Sia. This information is valuable, and parents are encouraged to take the time to review their child’s assessment through Sia - My Students - Grades as shown below prior to the interviews. If you are having trouble logging into Sia, please contact Shalom IT.
Students are encouraged to attend interviews along with their parents. Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.

Mission
The Three World of the Text:
The Bible is one of the places we seek to find God. However when reading Biblical text it is very important to understand and ask questions about the text being read. We encourage our students to think about the Three Worlds of the Text when engaging with a piece of text.
The first is the World Behind the Text. This requires them to learn about the context in which the text was written. The cultural world at the time, the specific community the text was written for, who wrote it, why it was written, are just some of the important pieces of the puzzle when it comes to fully understanding what the text is communicating.
The World of the Text. This is the actual piece of text. The type and structure of the text, what comes before and after this piece of text, the characters, key words and phrases, who speaks and who is silenced. All of these lead to a greater understanding of the text.
The World in Front of the Text is the final aspect and asks who and how this text might be relevant for today. Are there messages we can take from this text and bring them into our own lives? Is there anything in this text that might be open to challenge or questioning by a modern reader? How might gender, culture or life experience affect the way a modern reader might respond to the text? How might a modern reader gain a deeper awareness of the text?
All Three Worlds overlap and interact with each other. Biblical interpretation is incomplete if one world is unduly emphasised or neglected. We bring our questions to the Biblical text and it – the Word of God – in turn questions us.

Careers in Nursing
With the events of recent years and the first global-scale health crisis, the role of healthcare and medical professionals has never been more crucial.
International Nurses Day has just been celebrated on 12 May, the anniversary of Florence Nightingale’s birth.
If you are thinking of becoming a Nurse, in Australia, there are two key pathways:
Registered Nurse (RN): It takes longer to qualify as an RN, as the role generally has more responsibility. RN’s can become unit/ward managers, team leaders and also work within medical administration. RN’s work in private and public medical organisations, mainly hospitals, across all medical departments.
Enrolled Nurse (EN): EN’s work under RN’s, and the qualification pathway is slightly shorter but still requires a strong commitment. They observe, measure and record their patients’ condition, reporting changes to the RN or the doctors. EN’s can work across various medical and health organisations, including hospitals, aged care, and community health.
If you are unsure if you want to commit to a full degree to become an RN, consider these roles which can help you decide if nursing is the long-term role for you. Consider these three entry-level positions:
Assistant in Nursing – work
under the supervision of an RN or EN
Aged Care Worker – support elderly people by
assisting with daily activities and personal tasks
NDIS Support Worker – assist people living with a
disability to lead independent lives

How to Tackle a Lack of Experience on Your Resume
A lack of relative experience is the biggest challenge young people face in not securing the roles they apply for. It tricky – you need experience to get a job, but you need a job to get experience!
There are a few strategies that you can use to help overcome this issue. More and more employers state that they would rather recruit someone with the right attitude and mindset over someone with years of experience. If you have genuine enthusiasm and awareness of your relevant or transferrable skills for the role you are applying for, you will definitely stand out – you just have to demonstrate this in your application.
Remember to focus on all the skills that you do have such as involvement in school projects, team sports, babysitting or volunteering.
Keep it short and simple. For young people with less work experience, employers are not expecting a 2 or 3 page resume. One side of A4 is more than enough to detail your experiences and create a really clear idea of who you are and what you can offer.

New Editions To The Library
Two fun new books have been added to the nonfiction section of the Beerarlem Junior Library that aim at teaching kids coping skills.
“You can live on the bright side: the kids guide to optimism” by Lucy Bell is a colourful, exciting guide to optimism and positivity. The book is crammed full of easy activities and strategies to boost confidence and to inspire and empower kids to live a healthy life. The author aims to help children develop the abilities to entertain themselves and discover what makes them happy in a way that is unique to them.
“Life skills: how to be the best you can be!” by Keilly Swift, is an awesome resource for a clear and entertaining discussion on children’s feelings and emotions and understanding those things in others too. The book also gently explores sadness, grief, and stress and how to develop lifelong coping skills. The section on finding calm through mindfulness and breathing is exceptional, with recommended techniques such as nostril breathing, balloon belly, feather flutter, and body scan.
Books such as these are excellent tools for the young to build resilience in the face of the problems of the world. Practical advice for thinking things through properly and developing skills in communication, decision making, and problem solving will undoubtedly serve our children for facing what life has to throw at them for years to come.
These books will be held in the Beerarlem library in the nonfiction section.

Chess Success!
Congratulations to the players who represented Shalom at the Inter-School Chess Competition held on Tuesday 17th May at Walkervale SS. Four teams of keen chess minds represented Shalom fantastically on the day with plenty of impressive chess played and fun for all.
The Shalom Black team of Callum Macann, Kahn Ashmore, Charlie Emms and JJ Werchon displayed some excellent chess skills and finished in 2nd place to earn a silver medal. Callum once again showed his talent earning a merit ribbon for winning 5 out of his 7 matches and was supported well by his team-mates who each won 4 of their 7 matches.
Shalom Red displayed the depth of chess talent we are lucky to have at Shalom, missing out on a bronze medal by 0.5 of a point. The team of Rafe Marschke, Seth Newport, Joon McMahon and Viv Blemings also each won 4 of their 7 games – an impressive effort.
Shalom White, our young guns, Cameron Holznagel, Thomas Rach, Luca Baretta and Tobias St Ledger, and our Shalom Blue team of Jonathon El-Azzi, Jacob O’Brien, Thomas Brandon and Jack Shears, also competed hard on the day with some impressive wins between them.
To see the results in their entirety, follow the link:

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
