Principal’s Reflection
Saturday night we celebrated another enormously successful Shalom Formal. I got to be proud this year, not just as a Principal but also as a parent. It was just a great night. It was my privilege on the night to propose the toast to the Year 12 class. Earlier in the day, someone reminded me that this group of young people have done all of their Senior schooling in Covid times. They entered Year 10 as Covid reared its ugly head around the world. They have been trying times but these young people have managed to, largely, to cope exceptionally well. I hope that the lessons from these years might stay with them for a long time. I shared a prayer for them as a part of that toast and it is just as relevant for all of our other young people who have done their best to navigate some unforeseen experiences –
Prayer for the children of Covid times
May you never permit disappointment
to turn to despair
May you always remember that with challenges come unforeseen
opportunities
May you know that seemingly impossible things hide solutions just around
the corner
May you never take for granted the people who love you
May you never take your health for granted
May you never keep doing something, just because this is the way we have
always done it
May you always be confident in the face of overwhelming odds
May you always know the support of many friends and be constant in your
support of them.
May you value the sense of community and the values that have been shared
with you at Shalom and live that story out every day beyond this
place
And may you embrace a vision of God, or something else, that will give your
life purpose, meaning and promise.
My Appraisal process was completed last week. I am grateful and humbled by the responses made by staff, parents and students to the team as they reflected on my leadership at Shalom. Every day I am grateful to be a part of this community and for the privilege to work with colleagues and parents who so strongly support the values of this place. Our young people are fantastic. None of us are without fault but I would not swap being a part of this community for quids! Thank you.
2022 Shalom Showcase is on Friday and Saturday night this week. I have no doubt this will, again, be a standout success. Looking forward to seeing all the hard work and practice come together. Good luck to all involved.

Pivot – Student Survey
In the coming weeks all students will receive a survey from each of their class teachers. This year we are trialing a new platform ‘Pivot’ to collate this information. The surveys will be completed in class to gather feedback on their learning experience. We hope that students will engage with this process in a meaningful and reflective manner. This will ensure relevant data can be collected for teachers to reflect on their pedagogical approaches.
2022 External Assessment dates
The external assessments for General and General (Extension) subjects will be held from Monday 24 October to Tuesday 15 November 2022.
The 2022 external assessment timetable should be available before then end of Term 2. I will send a copy of this to all students via email when available. It will also be posted on SIA.
Please remember scheduled external exams cannot be missed. There is no opportunity for students to re-sit any of these exams if they are missed.
Alternate Venue - External Examinations
It is expected that all Year 12 students will sit their scheduled external examinations at Shalom College. If there is any exceptional circumstance as to why your child cannot complete their exams at the College, please contact Mrs Norris immediately to discuss this. It is a requirement of QCAA that an alternate venue be identified so that extra-ordinary arrangements can be made ahead of time.

Sorry Day
Sorry Day was held on 26 May 2022. This day remembers and reflects on the treatment of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people who were forcibly removed from their family as part of the Stolen Generation policies.
The landmark report on ‘The Stolen Generations’ – the Bringing them Home Report was tabled on this day in 1998.
It is an opportunity for all people to reflect on how the policies of government can lead to such horrible injustices and how we can remedy this now and create policies today, so it never happens again.
Reconciliation Week – Be Brave, Make Change
This year, the theme for Reconciliation Week is Be Brave, Make Change. It is to encourage all people to take action and to practice reconciliation each week and to take real action in their lives to make reconciliation real.

Rosa Awards
The ROSA (Recognition of Student Application) program is an award program which recognises student application to their studies. We value the importance of acknowledging students who are motivated, show perseverance and work diligently to reach their potential. The ‘goal posts’ for all our students are different, however all students are capable of achieving their own success targets. There are many ways we regularly encourage and reward the efforts of our students. The ROSA award allows for more of our students to be recognised amongst their peers.

Laptop ADP vs Warranty vs Intentional Damage
For those who are not aware or have forgotten, our Shalom HP student laptops are all purchased with ADP (Accidental Damage Protection). ADP allows us to repair up to three laptop parts per calendar year with a processing fee of $60.50 each time a claim is logged.
Warranty allows us to claim manufacture faults on a device. There are no fees associated to a warranty claim.
Accidental Damage Protection avoids excessive out-of-pocket repair or replacement costs caused by accidents such as drops, spills or electrical surges. HP provides the final decision on whether a device will fall under ADP or not. HP has strongly reminded us that intentional damage does not fall under ADP and therefore will incur the full cost of repair.
Intentional damage is when a student has intentionally or recklessly destroyed or damaged the Shalom laptop. HP does not cover intentional damage under ADP and therefore the families will have to pay for the cost of parts and labour. A great example is keys falling off a keyboard. Keys don’t just fall off and the common cause of this is students picking at the keys keyboard. A keyboard replacement is over $250.
We always do everything in our power to get the best outcome for Shalom families, however please understand that whether it’s HP or another brand, the vendor will have the final decision on whether they issue is warranty or ADP. As mentioned in the ICT agreement signed at the start of each year by all guardians, it is up to the school’s discretion as to what repairs need to be performed. This is a good time to talk with your students about looking after the College laptop because if they transfer to another school, we must pass this laptop onto another student that enrols at Shalom.
Where should Students be saving files?
Just a reminder that the College process for students is to only save files to their college home folder. They can use Foldr to access their home folder from any location. Foldr has an application that can be installed on all devices and a website in case there is an issue with the apps. We do not recommend saving to the local device or on usb sticks. One major reason for saving to home folders is that this allows us to assist the users with automated backups.
https://foldr.shalomcollege.com/
We have noticed recently students are losing documents from not saving. Every time a document is started, we need students to save this to their home folder immediately so there is a better chance of recovery in the event of an issue.
Quiet Achiever
With the start of Damien House in 2022 several hard-working quiet achievers have emerged. We would like to celebrate the contribution of Lily Fenton towards making sure 2022 is successful. Lily has been an exemplary buddy for her Year 7 partner in Damien 5, always caring, kind and considerate – an excellent shoulder to lean on. Lily has also gone the extra mile to help in Damien House by helping to set up the DA office with advertising posters, creating posters for our war cry and raising awareness for the upcoming fundraiser for the House Charity.
Lily’s care and thoughtfulness make her worthy of commendation as this week’s quiet achiever.

From the Library
We all know that reading to a small child stimulates the juvenile brain so that it develops sound skills in vocabulary and comprehension. Reading will also contribute to the development of empathy, imagination, and confidence, attributes necessary in a well-rounded individual. But current research is increasingly showing that we need to leverage the teenaged brain as its position in the neurological development timeline is so unique.
The teenaged mind is so creative and flexible; it can invent dances, devise complex idiom, lead political movements, stay ahead of fast-moving tech, and generate crazy money from YouTube and TikTok. Advancements in neuroscience have helped us understand the teenaged brain and the connection between the prefrontal cortex, communication, and learning capabilities.
Though teenagers are renowned for their propensity for risk-taking behaviours, this ‘fearlessness’, according to UCLA’s director of Developmental Neuroscience, is why “…adolescents thrive in the space of creativity and enacting social change.” This super-charged brain power allows the retention of the adaptability of their pre-adolescence and couples it with the power to acquire complex skills and emergent adult visions and abstract concepts as well.
Though experts suggest that meaningful reading is the only way to become functionally more intellectual, the actual art of reading must be honed first – teens need to read – anything – to prepare them for the academic reading that will help them in their studies and in their life’s ambitions. Processing words in print is imperative.
The library team at Shalom invite students to make suggestions for purchase, we want to, where possible, include what they wish to read in the collection to make it relevant to them.

Science and Engineering Challenge
Congratulations to the Science & Engineering ChallengeTeam - Bundaberg Champions 2022!
32 students along with Mr Maher and Mrs Bishop attended the Science and Engineering challenge on Friday 20 May at Kepnock SHS.
Schools from Bundaberg and the wider region battled together across 8 different challenges. Students worked in groups of 4 to meet the challenge and gain points for their schools. The different challenges are outlined below. Groups were chosen and assigned activities at random and each activity other than the bridge build, were done twice by different groups throughout the day.
The bridge build ended the day with each school testing their bridges to see if they could hold up to 200 times their own weight. It was a closely fought contest between Shalom College and Bundaberg SHS with the winner being declared only by the weight of the bridge itself.
Certificates were awarded to teams that won each individual challenge. Shalom College did not win any of these but was consistent in their effort across all the challenges resulting in the overall win for the day.
A fantastic team effort by all groups. Most of all, it was a fun day with creative thinking, teamwork and lots of laughs to be had. A big thank you to all students involved for their commitment and spirit, resulting in the winner’s trophy for 2022. They are now waiting to see if they make it to the State Finals.

#towelday
‘Towel Day’?!?
“What on Earth is that?” asked my Year 9J English class.
Each year on the 25 May, The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy fans across the globe celebrate ‘Towel Day’ in memory of its famous author, Douglas Adams. Towel Day first began in 2001, two weeks after Adams’ death. It is a day where fans of HHGTTG carry a towel in honour of this seminal sci- fi work.
This term, all Year 9 English students have been studying the science-fiction genre and as a class, 9J continued with the 1979 book that has become legendary across the world for many reasons including the Ultimate Answer to the Ultimate Question…. which of course is 42!
(Just ask Mr Pacey and Mr O’Sullivan for all the reasons why this is so).
Our class bought towels to class on Towel Day as they are of course, “…about the most massively useful thing an interstellar hitchhiker can have.” Afterall, “we mere Earthly hitchhikers require towels for many immensely useful purposes. We dry our furry pets and roll towels neatly into coordinated rows. On long trips, they ease the kinks in our necks. Even our tiny humans use them to dry off after taking a swim. Though, perhaps not very effectively. It can also offer shade on a sunny day….” and as we found, so much more. (25 May 2022)
https://nationaldaycalendar.com/towel-day-may-25/
Who would have thought towel art could be such fun? See below for pictures of our ‘towel mice’. The novel’s mice, Benjy and Frankie were bought from Earth by central character Trillian on the wild adventure through the galaxy.
“These creatures you call mice you see are not quite as they appear, they are merely the protrusions into our dimension of vast, hyper-intelligent pan-dimensional beings.”
— Slartibartfast , explaining mice to Arthur
Although at times we did not quite ‘get’ the humour of HHGTTG, we certainly learned a thing or two about this famous text and why fans across the globe are so devoted to its author.
Til next Towel Day…

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
