Principal’s Reflection
“Australia, we have a problem,” writes Nikki Gemmell (Weekend Australian June 11 – 12 2022). The writer continues, stating that the problem needs to be tackled with an advertising campaign as terrifying and effective as the anti-smoking campaign with the sponge and the filthy tar being wrung out.” The problem? Vaping.
Vaping is a growing problem and quite a concerning one amongst adolescents across the nation. The use of vapes, or e-cigarettes, is rapidly growing amongst this age group. The industry is disturbingly predatory, luring children with false claims of harmlessness. The long-term health consequences are not known.
Dr Sarah White from QUIT Victoria, outlines that contrary to widespread belief among teens, vaping is not harmless. She states that “an e-cigarette can contain many different chemicals – very few are identified, and none have been tested to show they are safe to inhale. They are a profoundly serious risk to respiratory health. Think reduced lung function, airway and lung irritation and increased asthma.”
“E-cigarettes,” Dr White adds, “have not been around long enough to know what other diseases they might cause, but most experts think it’s likely they’ll result in lung and mouth cancers.” Vapes are so easy for students to purchase; some students buying the vapes online. And many contain nicotine which is addictive.
Public Health physician, Professor Emily Banks, from the Australian National University, recently led a review for the Australian Council on Smoking and Health. “Indirect evidence highlights nicotine use during childhood and adolescence can lead to problems with mood, memory, concentration and learning.” Another issue raised by Professor Banks is that “these products are mostly unregulated, so people don’t know what they are vaping.”
It is important that parents know the College’s stance on vaping and the deterrents we have put in place.
Increasingly we are noticing that two or three students gather in a toilet cubicle, so to curb this we have informed the students that should they be found/seen in a cubicle with another student/s, then it is an automatic Friday detention. Should they be found to be vaping then it is a 5-day external suspension. Even if a student claims that they are not vaping but others in the cubicle were, they still receive the suspension.
It is important to remember that the health of our students is a priority and as such we will enforce our stance on this.
The bottom line: students are not allowed to bring a vape into the College, they are not allowed to share or give another student vapes. They are not allowed to vape at school – not anywhere on the grounds.
Queensland Health some weeks ago launched Vape Truths featuring Dr Karl Kruszelnicki. More information on this campaign is available here:

Punctuality and Attendance:
Students need to be at school by 8:25 am each day. The first 15 to 20 minutes of the lesson are crucial and if your child is late, they are missing valuable teaching time. A note of explanation is needed for any late arrivals.
All students do become unwell from time to time; however, some take more days off than are perhaps needed. Students need to be engaged in the teaching and learning which means that they need to be at school and in classes. Please provide a medical certificate should your child have any health issues that mean that they have a few more days away than usual. House Coordinators will continue to check attendance.
Our attendance rate for Term 2 was 84%, down from 95.4% in Term 1. Our aim is to have the rate around 95%.

Mission
Shalom Day
We had a wonderful day last Thursday celebrating all things Shalom. We were reminded about the importance of the dignity of each person in our community during our Liturgy. We were entertained by some very talented students with the return of Shalom’s Got Talent. And finally, we danced our hearts out in the InterHouse Dance Competition. Lingiari House coming away with the win.
Thank you to the many people that made this day possible.
Reflection Days for Year 10 and Year 8
We have 2 very good presenters coming to Shalom, Katie and David Kobler. They will address some very real issues for young people. Year 10 will have their sessions on 29 August and these will take the entire day. Year 8 will have their session on 30 August in Periods 1 and 2
This is what they are covering for Year 10:
- Ingredients for a healthy relationships
- Sexual decision making
- Consent
- And other age appropriate issues
This is what they are covering for Year 8:
- How to find, build and navigate meaningful relationships
- Where toxic versions of masculinity and femininity are rife, ways to formulate a healthy understanding of their own gender and identity.
I am sure you agree these are very important topics for young people to engage with. If you have a child in these year levels, please ensure they are in attendance on these days. If you require any additional information, please contact me.

Why working in construction is more appealing than ever
Perceptions of construction careers are rapidly changing for the better. The demand for tradespeople and paraprofessionals like engineers and project managers is soaring thanks to a projected $92.9 billion in planned construction projects across Queensland (Construction Skills Queensland Major Project Index 2022). This spend represents up to 50,000 new jobs!
Moreover, State and Federal governments have shown a renewed interest in both tertiary STEM qualifications, as well as continuing to subsidise and promote VET courses and apprenticeships.
Year13 have collaborated with Construction Skills Queensland to deliver The New-Print of Construction - an e-learning course designed to familiarise students with the wide range of job opportunities available to them within the construction sector, skills and qualifications needed, what a typical working week looks like, how much you can earn and so much more.
Where to After School?
Many students are uncertain about their next steps after Year 12. It’s OK not to know what you want to do - go easy on yourself, self-reflect and do your research.
This article has practical tips for starting your career journey and why you should focus on your direction, not your destination. Find out more about why you should take your time, take a career test and valuable links to help you start your planning.

Quiet Achiever
This week Adams would like to acknowledge Ella Johnson and Gemma Floyd as our Quiet Achievers. Ella represents all the things we stand for in Adams. She has a bright and bubbly personality and is always willing to help out when needed. Ella gives up a lot of her time to help with anything that is needed in Adams house, and is a valued member of Adams 3 who Mrs Bishop thinks very highly of. Gemma is another amazing and valued member of Adams House. Gemma is becoming more and more involved with the happenings in Adams and Mr Harris feels she has a massive contribution in Adams 5. Paying it forward is our motto here in Adams and I feel that these girls are continually doing so. Keep up the good work girls and thank you for all that you do for Adams.

McAuley Movie Night & Mini Market
Last year McAuley House held a very successful “Mini Market and Movie Night’ as our major fundraising event for our house charity CARINBUNDI. We are continuing this great event in 2022.
This year we are holding a movie and mini handmade market evening on the 14th OCTOBER 5:30-8pm. The event will be held here at Shalom and open to everyone. But to make it a big success we are after stall holders. So if you, family members or friends are into creating handmade items and would like to be a stall holder, make yourself some extra money, get your products and name out into the community and be part of making a difference to our house charity CARINBUNDI we would like to hear from you.
For example, we are after people who make and sell cards, candles, jewelry, artwork, body products, hair products, clothes, produce, cakes just to name a few. If you are interested in being part of this and want to set up and have your own stall at this event please contact Paula van Dalen through email vandalenp@shalomcollege.com or call me on 41558155 by Friday 2nd September.

From the Library
The Children's Book Council of Australia was established in 1945, a time when there were few Australian children's books and Australian authors and illustrators were virtually unknown. As a means of promoting Australian literacy and artistic merit the CBCA established annual book awards.
This years’ theme is “Dreaming with eyes open”, research on this presents many interpretations. One source suggests that the phrase represents the convergence of one’s unfiltered dreams with a parallel action. Another poetically proposes that this is the state in which ideas and desires placed in our hearts by God can begin to flow freely informing us of our purpose. Influential Indian entrepreneur Ronnie Screwvala in his book “Dream with your eyes open: an entrepreneurial journey” says “Dreaming with your eyes open means being alert to challenges but refusing to let them stop you.”
What does it mean to you?
The Shalom library has the CBCA Book Week shortlisted books for older readers, younger readers, and for the Eve Pownall award. Titles include:
“Girls in boy’s cars” by Felicity Castagna, “How to Repaint a life” by Steven Herrick, “Tiger daughter” by Rebecca Lim, “Terciel and Elinor” by Garth Nix, “A glasshouse of stars” by Shirley Marr, “Dragon Skin” by Karen Foxlee, and the beautifully illustrated “Walking in Gagudju country” and more.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
