Principal’s Reflection

I came across this story, a parable, written by Steve Goodier, author, and thought that I would share it with you. It is thought provoking for both teachers, but particularly parents.

A young teacher had a dream that an angel appeared to him and said, “You will be given a child who will grow up to become a world leader. How will you prepare her so that she will realize her intelligence, grow in confidence, develop both her assertiveness and sensitivity, be open-minded, yet strong in character? In short, what kind of education will you produce that she can become one of the world’s truly great leaders?”

The young teacher awoke in a cold sweat. It had never occurred to him before – any one of his present students or future students could be the person described in his dream. Was he preparing them to rise to any position to which they may aspire? He thought, “How might my teaching change if I knew that one of my students was this person?” He gradually began to formulate a plan in his mind.

This student would need experience as well as instruction. She would need to know how to solve problems of various kinds. She would need to grow in character as well as knowledge. She would need self-assurance as well as the ability to listen well and work with others. She would need to understand and appreciate the past yet feel optimistic about the future. She would need to know the value of lifelong learning to keep a curious and active mind. She would need to grow in understanding of others and become a student of the spirit. She would need to set high standards for herself and learn self-discipline, yet she would also need love and encouragement, that she might be filled with love and goodness.

His teaching changed. Every young person who walked through his classroom became, for him, a future world leader. He saw each one, not as they were, but as they could be. He expected the best from his students yet tempered it with compassion. He taught each one as if the future of the world depended on his instruction.

After many years, a woman he knew rose to a position of world prominence. He realized that she must surely have been the girl described in his dream. Only she was not one of his students, but his daughter. For of all the various teachers in her life, her father was the best.

I’ve heard it said that “Children are living messages we send to a time and place we will never see.” But this isn’t simply a parable about an unnamed school teacher. It is a parable about you and me – whether, or not, we are parents or even teachers. And the story, our story, actually begins like this:

“You will be given a child who will grow up to become……You finish the sentence……

If not a world leader, then a superb father or mother? An excellent teacher? A gifted healer? An innovative problem solver? An inspiring artist? A generous philanthropist?

Where and how you will encounter this child is a mystery. But believe that one child’s future may depend upon influence only you can provide, and something remarkable will happen. For no young person will ever be ordinary to you again. And you will never be the same.

Dance Night

Congratulations to the students and staff involved in Dance Night on Friday and Saturday night. We are so appreciative of the hours of extra time our teachers put in to preparing students for an event such as this. It is a memorable and exciting experience for students and one they will remember long after they have finished school. A wonderful night.

Happy Father’s Day

I hope all our dads had a great day with their kids yesterday.

Learner Conferences

These conferences are an important part of your child’s educational journey and many parents took the opportunity to meet with their child’s teachers.

Damien House Fundraiser

After the success of the Share the Dignity Donation Drive where Damien House families contributed well over $1,000 worth of products to support women and girls in need, last Wednesday we conducted our major fundraiser – Selling Snow Cones!

A huge congratulations to Brad Balchin who organised and coordinated the fundraiser. With the help of Katie Maher, Ainsley Clarke, James Harney, Aleisha Woodcroft and Connor Smith, plus support from Hunter Lane, Jessica Carter and Breannah Freeman we were able to produce around 250 snow cones to make hundreds of dollars profit. A final amount will be determined in the coming days.

Special mentions to Mrs. Benson, Mr. Parsons and Mrs. O’Shea-Hard for giving up their lunch break to help in production and sales!

Also, Kody Hunting for creating our posters of Share the Dignity required products to raise awareness of the issue. Students were able to select where they would prefer to have their donation spent to support the charity. These included tampons and pads for women and girls, toothpaste and brushes, maternity products, soaps and shampoos.

An honorary mention to Lucy Alcorn from McAuley House who spent the lunch break helping out when we were short of numbers. A green angel no doubt with a Damien pink heart.

Year 8 Geography Excursion

Our Year 8 students recently participated in an excursion to the Nielson Beach, Bargara. In Geography this term students are studying the processes that shape our coastlines. During the excursion students collected data by examining the Nielson Beach area, with a focus on the erosion management strategies in place and the damage being caused by waves. Spending time at Nielson Beach and viewing the area through a Geography lens was a great way to engage students and build their understanding of the processes in play along Australian coastlines.

Character Strengths in Children’s Literature

Positive psychology theory has evolved since it was first introduced, it is concerned now with more than just character strengths, but how these translate when stacked up against exposure to adversity, our interpretation of purpose in life, and our perception of happiness.

The 24 character strengths are considered values which reflect our personal ethics and therefore are pathways to the manifestation of our pro-social, value-based actions in the community.

Some great books for young people that are good exemplars of our strengths are already in the College libraries:

  • Miracle at Speedy Motors by A. McCall Smith, Junio Fiction MCC – Kindness
  • The Hunger Games by S. Collins, Junior Fiction COL - Courage, leadership, teamwork
  • To Kill A Mockingbird, H. Lee, Senior Fiction LEE – Justice, Perspective
  • Nineteen Minutes by J. Picoult, Senior Fiction PIC – justice
  • Please Don’t Hug Me by Kay Kerr, Senior Fiction KER - Self-Regulation
  • The Happiest Refugee by Ahn Do, Junior Non-Fiction 792.702 DO - Gratitude/ Humour/ Hope
  • Animal Farm by George Orwell, Junior Fiction ORW & Junior Graphic ORW – Social intelligence
  • The Saga Of King Waa-gun by John Long, Junior Non-Fiction 298 LON – Humility
  • I am Malala by Malala Yousafzai, Senior Non-Fiction 371.822 YOU - Leadership/ Love of Learning/ Fairness
  • The Art Of Losing by Lizzy Mason, Senior Fiction MAS - Honesty/Forgiveness
  • Tiger Daughter by Rebecca Lim, Senior Fiction LIM - Perseverance
  • The Boy In The Striped Pajamas by John Boyle, Junior Fiction BOY - Curiosity/ Kindness
  • When It Drops by Alex Dyson, Junior Fiction DYS - Creativity

If you are interested in the self-reflective activity of discovering your character strengths, there is a free survey offered by VIA Institute on Character. Just follow the link.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers

At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.

Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.

For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.

Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).

No experience required!
