Principal’s Reflection
The information in this article, written by Lindsay Austria, is from the Australian Catholics Schools Edition Magazine (Spring 2022).
The article is titled: MEDIA FOR GOOD Harnessing the Power of Communication
This would be an article worth sharing with your teenager.
Lindsay Austria states, “As with all our interactions in the real world, what we do online can be good or bad for us. Building an online presence requires a consideration of what is right and wrong. Beware the deadly sins of social media.”
The 6 Deadly Sins of Social Media
PRIDE
It is right to take pride in our accomplishments but too much pride can be extremely unhealthy. Unhealthy pride is when we do or say things to want people to praise, worship or talk about us so that we look better than other people which can be a distorted view. We need to be mindful of our dealings with others, our posts and what we say.
GLUTTONY
We enjoy the freedom we have on social media, mindlessly scrolling through every app, trying to satisfy ourselves with the latest content. You could scroll forever and never run out of posts. It’s an addiction. A harmful addiction to our wellbeing as young voices in society.
Change your relationship with social media apps. Reduce your screen time and monitor how you feel, your emotions and your reactions to scrolling through your social media feed aimlessly.
ENVY
Social media is an amalgamation of images of people and events that may trigger our deepest insecurities and increase levels of jealousy. No matter our levels of self-esteem, constant exposure to people whose lives seem so much more interesting and fun, can have an unhealthy effect on our mental health. Remove what bothers you on social media – unplug, unplug, unplug.
GREED
Social media can make us greedy about likes and followers. Social media can make us greedy about having the highest snap score to prove that we have an unceasing contact list of friends.
Let us remember to be authentic in presenting who we are. Let us try to share other people’s opinions that bring about positivity and truth.
WRATH/ANGER
Many young people post slogans on our Instagram and Snapchat stories to say that we support a certain social issue.
For example, the 2020 Black Lives Matter Movement was a significant event in US history with half a million people protesting. On a global scale, many people posted a black photo on their Instagram feeds and stories in showcasing their support for the movement.
Though this action does show our followers that we are allies and support, how can we also promote meaningful conversations within our communities? It is helpful to consider how we might move beyond anger and try to build bridges and start conversations that might lead people to change their attitudes.
SLOTH
We possess the power of our voice – the capacity to make change. Let us not be inactive on our social media platforms if we are passionate about something. Post comments, create new content, add value to your network. Develop relationships and use your talents and gifts in conversation.
Social media platforms such as TikTok allow us to connect with others who have the same passions and interests. Advocate for what you believe in and create a welcoming space for people to celebrate diversity in our talents, strengths, and desires without any judgement from society.
Hollie Seibold – Children’s Wellbeing Guest Speaker
Join us on Tuesday 18 October at 7pm in the Performing Arts Precinct, for an insightful and thought-provoking session that will focus on our children’s wellbeing, including the use of social media and the implications for those who use it.
Hollie Seibold, a wellbeing specialist, teacher, wife to a professional sporting coach and a mother to three daughters, will share her story of wellbeing and the impacts of social media on our children. Hear Hollie’s story which has shaped a passion for educating and empowering the wellbeing of others.
She will attempt to answer the question – “can a shift in our perspective change how we view social media and its impacts?” Hollie will also examine what is emotional wellbeing and how our mindset, effort over results and celebration of failure, can help our children thrive.
Hollie’s journey has led to a career change. She has followed her aspiration in assisting the wellbeing of others through her work with Readiness and this has resulted in the creation of a program that supports primary aged children in building a toolkit for their own wellbeing.
Welcome back:
Today we welcome back Mr McMahon after a term of Long Service Leave; hopefully he has had a well-earned rest.

Year 12
Good luck to all Year 12 students this week as they commence the first half of the Mock Examination Block. All students are required to attend their scheduled exams during this block or attend ‘catch-up’ supplementary sessions if required. Students will be informed by their class teacher when they are required to complete a ‘catch-up’ session.
Any student undertaking additional external learning through the Pathways Program can continue to attend this during Mock Exam block if they do not have any scheduled exams on that day. It is a priority that students attend the college for their exams instead of being ‘off-campus’.

Year 11
This is a timely reminder regarding assessment in the senior school. If a student does not submit a final response to an assessment and where evidence of student progress is available (a draft or classwork), teachers will make judgments based on this. If a student provided no evidence on or before the due date, and no other evidence is available, a student will receive a ‘Not-Rated’. This will mean no credit can be given towards their QCE for that unit of learning.
Senior assessment is bound by QCAA guidelines around Academic Integrity and Assessment processes, your student may miss the opportunity to complete assessment if their absence does not relate to an approved absence, unforeseen illness, or misadventure. Student undertaking Vocational Placement, Work Experience or other pathway opportunities must attend school for scheduled exams regardless of these days.
Positions Vacant - QCAA invigilators for external assessment
QCAA is seeking applications from community members for invigilator positions for the 2022 external assessments. If you are interested please read the Position description: Invigilators and Invigilator frequently asked questions available at:

Mission
Year 11 ACTS Camp
ACTS Camp, a leadership retreat that took place in Cooee Bay, was attended by eleven of Shalom’s Year 11 students who were interested in A Chance To Serve. Spanning from 24 – 26 August, we were given a multitude of opportunities to demonstrate our leadership qualities alongside many others from various schools.
Before even arriving at Cooee Bay, the bus made a detour into Gladstone to pick up students from Chanel College. Although hesitant at first, it didn’t take long for connections to form and we arrived at camp with new friends already.
Over the course of the three day program, we engaged in many activities, with group facilitator and presenter Dave Jorna, ranging from fun and games to moral codes and meditation, deepening our understanding of ourselves and those around us. Meeting people from different schools was eye opening and a fantastic opportunity to leave our comfort zones and extend our personal insights to the many meanings and forms of leadership.
There were many highlights of the camp one of those were, free time at the beach with new friends.
Ultimately, one of the most challenging parts of the camp was saying gut-wrenching goodbyes to the wonderful people we’d gotten to know and despite only knowing them for a short period of time, we are so thankful to have had the chance to meet them. It goes without saying that we all felt like part of a new family - one that is diverse, encouraging, fun, and unforgettable.
This trip would not have been possible without Mrs Taylor & Mrs Petersen and we are endlessly appreciative of the opportunities that they have presented to us as it truly was an amazing experience. Thank you also to Mr Robinson and Mr Aplin for taking the time out of their busy day to drive us to and from Camp.
To conclude, here are a couple of accounts from students who attended.
“ACTS Camp has also been described as ‘A Chance To Sob’ as when the life changing experience ends, you will not want to leave the welcoming and loving environment.” - Ava
“ACTS Camp was an amazing experience that provided me with a new perspective of leadership and teamwork. Throughout the activities and lectures that were provided I felt that I have grown into a stronger and more kind leader.” - Ruby
"ACTS camp was one of those one in a lifetime sort of experiences." - Fletcher
“ACTS camp was a chance for me to meet new, amazing people and gain more leadership skills” - Lauren
“Year 11 ACTS camp gave us a chance to serve and expand our leadership skills with other wonderful year 11 students across the Rockhampton Diocese, it was an amazing experience and I would highly recommend for all students.”- Lilly
“ACTS Camp was a remarkable experience and I am so grateful for having an opportunity.” - Irene
“ACTS camp was a great experience where we got to meet likeminded people from a range of schools. We made lifelong friends and I would recommend it to everyone” - Cooper

Studying on Campus vs Online Study
The past couple of years have seen a huge uptake in universities moving to learning online, and it’s an option that’s more popular and accessible than ever.
But for some people, it’s not quite the same as being able to attend classes on campus. So how do you work out what’s the best option for you when you start your university studies.
There are advantages and disadvantages to both, and at the end of the day the decision comes down to what will best suit you because there is a lot to consider. Take a look at some of the pros and cons to help you make up your mind.

Gymfinity Ninja Zone
Throughout Term 3 Mrs Somerfield’s and Mrs Moller’s Year 10 Physical Education classes have been participating in the “Challenge and Adventure Games” Unit. Throughout the unit, students have developed their orienteering skills, played ultimate frisbee and frisbee golf and as a culminating activity visited Gymfinity Gymnastics to participate in their Ninja Zone.
Students were guided through the specialized Ninja obstacles by Gymfinity instructors Matt and Nick and were encouraged to challenge themselves and push themselves outside their comfort zone to complete the course. Every student that participated in the three different zones challenged themselves and worked to achieve their personal best. Some students persistently worked at completing a part of the ninja rig until they achieved success, for some it was about making it to the top of the ninja wall and for others it was about how high they could flip into the foam pit. Overall the students had an amazing experience and all came away proud of their individual achievements.
Thank you to the staff of Gymfinity Tracy, Matt and Nick for welcoming the Shalom students and expertly guiding them through the challenge zones.

From the Library
The critics are raving… hear what they have to say about the books in the Shalom library collections!
Amulet. Book one, The Stonekeeper by Kazu Kibuishi
“An interesting fiction series that is good for those who aren't good at reading heavy novels. This will bring the reader into an interesting world with many things to keep discovering.” - Callum Macann
Dark Rise by C.S. Pacat
“Combining the grit and grime of 19th century London with the glamour of medieval fantasy, Dark Rise by C.S. Pact is a thrilling novel full of twists and turns that will leave you breathless.” - Libby Boas
Little Women by Louisa May Alcott
“I can never get tired of this beautifully crafted novel of four “Little Women”, in fact that reminds me, maybe I’ll read it for a seventh time…” – Lily Thatcher
We have recently launched an ongoing way for students to communicate their thoughts on the collection to their peers. The library welcomes reviews from all students in all years to go to the library catalogue and ‘write a review’. Once approved by library staff each Monday, the reviews are published and the writers will each receive a small token prize. At the end of the month one review will be selected for a larger prize.
The opportunity is here for students to engage in their chosen literature and share their analyses and opinions with others and thereby, hopefully, encouraging others too.
If you are really keen, there are heaps of websites and YouTube tutorials on writing killer book reviews, the link included here is to quite a good one.

T20 Cricket
Last Monday, the Shalom Open T20 Cricket team played the South Queensland finals of the Schools T20 Knockout comp in Gympie. In the semi-finals, Shalom played a very strong Chancellor College from the Sunshine Coast. Shalom bowled first and restrict Chancellor to 7/127 from the 20 overs. In reply, Shalom struggled to 'get moving' and after some poor short selections, were dismissed for 41. A tough loss. In the playoff for 3rd v 4th, Shalom played Prince of Peace Lutheran College from Everton in Brisbane. Shalom batted first and compiled a massive 5/202 from 20 overs with solid contributions from Ned and Oliver. Shalom went into the field feeling confident and bowled and caught well, dismissing the opposition for 57 with Simon Millett taking 5 for 1 from 2 overs. Thanks to Mr Habermann for the time and effort he puts in with Shalom Cricket.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
