Principal’s Reflection
Unlike most people, I don’t mind election campaigns. They remind me that we live in a great society. The free exchange of views, even when they differ, in a safe and respectful manner is something that we should never take for granted. My only reservation about our process is that it would appear that some don’t spend much time giving serious thought and consideration to the issues that matter. There is far too much emphasis on the ‘vibe’, or if I like someone’s personality or whether a political candidate can recall the price of a loaf of bread or random economic statistics.
The big issues in life take a lot more consideration. I really like the cartoon. The French philosopher, Descartes, is credited with the first quote. Twitter, Tik Tok and FaceBook could vie for credit for the second! Everyone has a right to an opinion. But those who hold opinions that are not researched and not carefully thought out should not expect anyone else to take them seriously or even respect those opinions. This happens with politics and it is also common with other ‘big issues’, like God. Some of my best friends are atheists. I hold a different view and I am happy to explain mine to them. Conversely, I need my atheist friends to be able to explain and argue their point of view. Just telling me that ‘this is what their opinion is’, does not carry a lot more weight than their opinion about having poached or scrambled eggs for breakfast. It is not consequential. Social media brings many blessings. It also gives a megaphone to those who cannot logically argue a point of view. Another three weeks of Federal election to go. As you find yourself annoyed with the advertising and the jockeying for position that come with every campaign, remember to thank God you live in a country where we are able to argue a point of view and choose who our leaders will be. For those of you who may be struggling to decide the place a God may play in your life, think and read carefully. It is much more important than the choice of your breakfast!
Report Comment Feedback – in last week’s Newsletter, I put out there the possibility of not having comments on Report Cards given the quality of commentary teachers now make on assessments via SIA. I am really pleased that some parents got back to me on this but would love to hear more before we make a final decision. So far, parents are happy to get better feedback via SIA than on Reports. It has also been brought to my attention that we need to offer parents some more assistance on navigating SIA and that will happen. SIA is a great step forward for us in our communication processes but we do need to do all we can to ensure that it is easy to use. Please let me know your thoughts on this.
Road Trauma – the week before last, we had two of our current students and one sibling involved in different road accidents on the one day. Heloise O’Kelly (Year 12 Damien) was in one accident and was treated for some broken bones. Billy Dawson (Year 11 Hogan) was in a different accident with his brother Max. The second was the more severe accident. Both boys suffered significant injuries and required complex surgery. It would appear that the Dawson boys were not at any fault in their accident. Billy, with a broken pelvis and other injuries, somehow managed to extricate himself from a severely damaged vehicle through a rear window. Max, at that time was trapped. He was freed, just before the car ignited, by the driver of the car who hit them. That driver saved Max’s life. That gentleman had perhaps more serious injuries than either of the boys but was determined to help them. All three are currently in hospital in Brisbane. The Dawson family would greatly appreciate your prayers and support. We expect that Heloise will be back with us soon. All parents of driving age children know that this is our worst nightmare. This community will do all that it can to support both families.

From the Library
When audiences watching Peter Pan on the stage in 1904 were asked to “suspend disbelief” as they watched Pan fly and affirmed their belief in fairies convincingly enough to coax tinkerbell to live again, they were being called upon to push aside assumptions of accepted reality and invest in the alternate reality presented to them.
New in the Junior Fiction collection in the Beerarlem library are the books of the Twisted Tales series. These are produced under the Disney umbrella and ask us to push aside our assumptions and take the stories we grew up with on new and unexpected paths beyond what we are familiar with.
“A Whole New World” tells the tale of Aladdin when he didn’t have possession of the lamp but instead had to pit himself against the power-hungry Jafar, the sultan’s trusted advisor and new owner of the magical lamp. In “Mirror Mirror”, the storyline we know is disrupted by the Evil Queen in fact poisoning the prince instead of Snow White. “Unbirthday” tells the tale of the now eighteen-year-old Alice who returns to Wonderland to halt the Queen’s tyrannical rule before time itself ends.
In “Straight on Till Morning” Wendy Darling makes a deal with the devil and joins Captain Hook of his pirate ship. “So this is Love” explores the classic tale as it would have unfolded had Cinderella not tried on the glass slipper. “Part of Your World” extends the tale of Ariel the little mermaid, and in “Once Upon a Dream” Sleeping Beauty possibly never wakes …!

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!

"WHAT IS GOD SAYING TO THE CHURCH TODAY"
by: PAULINE MEREFIELD
Recently I watched a recorded zoom meeting between Bishop Barron (Word on Fire), Nicky Gumbel (Alpha)and Fr John Mallon (Divine Renovation). They were asked “What is God saying to the Church today?” In their answers I was impressed to realise how much our Parish Vision Statement aligned with their responses.
“We go out … to share God’s love respectfully with all people” is the focus for the ministry I’m involved with: Religious Instruction in State schools.
Bishop Barron said that RI volunteers should be deemed Essential Workers. It is essential that a child’s education be for the whole person which includes socially, emotionally and spiritually. Every day we are with the students, through using the questions and activities supplied in the materials, we can Share God’s love and hence develop the children’s spiritual intelligence.
Bishop Barron also mentioned to be skilled in “sharing God’s love” we need training. All the RI teachers will say that through preparing the lessons, reading and thinking about the Bible stories and praying about how they affect themselves and the children, they can develop and strengthen their own personal faith. Personal growth all around.
Nicky Gumbel talked about what a privilege it is to share God’s love and that the most loving action we as Christians can do is introduce someone to Jesus. Every week the Ri instructors talk with students, some who are churched and some who only get an opportunity to hear Jesus’s story during RI sessions. It is a joy and privilege to spend time with them. Our relationship with the children rather than the content of the lessons is how we reflect the person of Jesus. One of my Religious Instruction teachers recently shared with me an experience at her small country school. She had not been to her weekly classes due to covid restrictions but the school Principal invited her to come in for a visit. She went in at lunchtime, sat under a tree in the playground and shared the Easter story with the children. All the children sat with her and told her their Easter stories. A wonderful experience of love and respect. A privilege.
Nicky quoted from the gospel of John “that they may all be one, just as you, Father, are in me, and I in you, that they also may be in us, so that the world may believe that you have sent me.” He was referring to when we work together we can be a powerful force. RI in Bundaberg is run as a Cooperative between the 24 Christian faith groups. A truly Ecumenical ministry. It is wonderful to witness how all the faith groups work together, with a common goal of Sharing God’s Love. I have learned so much about how our fellow Christians worship and interpret their faith.
Fr John Mallon challenges us to be alive in our parishes, to be missionaries. Evangelisation is the primary role of a Christian. The Great Commissioning from Matthew 28 “Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptising them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” Moving us into action, action with the power of the Holy Spirit. What better way to carry out our mission than to work with the children in our state schools?
Thousands of parents have given permission for their children to be part of the RI sessions. They are ready and waiting but there are too few missionaries able to take up this call It was certainly empowering to hear these three great missionaries validating the work of Religious Instruction in state schools. It is a ministry that ticks the Missionary, Evangelical and Ecumenical boxes. Amazing.
