As I moved around the College last week, I am pretty sure that all of our students had a better start to the school year than Charlie Brown’s little sister Sally did! It was wonderful to see so many new and returning eager faces around the College. Shalom will be a better place this year for the 270 new Year 7 students, the 30 new students from Year 8-11, the 14 new teachers, the 7 new Teacher Aides and the 11 new ‘Gap Year’ Teacher Aides. Schools without students are ‘soul-less’ places. It was great to get our soul back last week.
To all of our Police Families – there would have been no-one not heartbroken at the loss in December of Constables Rachel McCrow and Matthew Arnold. Their lives were lost senselessly and needlessly along with that of Mr Alan Dare. It is a reminder to all of us the risk everyone of our Police officers take on every day. We have quite a number of QPS families at Shalom. Please know our thoughts and prayers are with you all. That awful incident was also a reminder to all of us as parents and educators of how important it is to educate our young people to discriminate between real information and conspiracy theories. It would appear that those responsible for that awful act were drawn to dangerous and deranged lies spread on-line. We need to model for our young people how to think clearly and to disagree at times but always respectfully. May God hold those grieving families close.
Congratulations to the Class of 2022 – Senior results for last year were very pleasing with almost all of our students achieving the Tertiary entrance that they sought. We look forward to welcoming back to Shalom on Thursday for Assembly, the College Dux for 2022, Erika Marshman. Erika worked extraordinarily hard in her Senior years and made the personal sacrifices necessary to achieve an outstanding ATAT of 99.35.

Welcome back to all our existing families and a big welcome to our new Shalom families. 2023 is set to be another great year at Shalom.
Key staff who support our students are: Mrs O’Donnell (Pathways Coordinator), Mrs Allen (Senior School Coordinator), Mrs Munckton (Middle School Coordinator), Mrs Staley (Student Services Coordinator) and Mr Robinson (Student Welfare Coordinator). I look forward to working together in partnership with you and our staff to assist your student the best way possible.
Subject Changes
Year 11 students and parents were advised of this process and timeline on 16 February via email. Reminder that students and parents can access the interview booking sheet via SIA. Deadline for changes is Friday 10 February.
Year 9 and 10 students who wish to make a subject change need to see either Mrs Munckton (Year 9) or Mrs Allen (Year 10) before Friday 3 February. Please visit their office in Student Reception during lunch or afternoon tea during Week 1 or 2.
Students who wish to apply for a program amendment (study) due to an external course such as TAFE, a Traineeship or SUN you need to see Ms O'Donnell for the application form. These will not be processed until your course begins.
Tutoring
Many college teachers voluntarily run tutorial sessions before, during and after school for a variety of subject areas and year levels. We will commence tutoring this week and the tutoring timetable has been published in this newsletter for your information.
The tutoring timetable can be found here.
Middle School
Year 7 and Year 9 students will sit the NAPLAN online tests from Wednesday 15 March – Monday 27 March. There will be an opportunity for students to participate in practice NAPLAN tests from Monday 13 February – Friday 24 February.
If you have any concerns about NAPLAN or if you wish to withdraw your student from NAPLAN testing, please contact Megan Munckton, Middle School Coordinator, megan_munckton@shalomcollege.com.
Please note: all students MUST have corded headphones or earphones to undertake the NAPLAN Online testing. This is the responsibility of families to ensure that students have their earphones or headphones for all test days, including the practice test. These headphones/earphones must have a 3.5mm standard jack. Wireless headphones (e.g., Apple air pods) are not compatible. If you need to purchase headphones or earphones, we suggest you do this as soon as possible. The uniform shop has a small supply of earphones for $6.

Last Tuesday we welcomed Uncle Chris and Everett Johnson to officially begin the 2023 school year through a traditional smoking ceremony. As a Traditional Owner, Gooreng Gooreng man Uncle Chris Thiesfield, was able to Welcome us to Country and share his knowledge of the ceremony. Everett performed a traditional welcoming song in Gooreng Gooreng language and also translated it into English. By sharing their knowledge and culture, they reminded us that learning and ceremony have taken place on this land over many thousands of years.
Our guests were introduced by two of our Year 12 Lingiari students, Patrick C and Finlay C. Inspired by their House patron, Vincent Lingiari, they led us in prayer following the traditional ceremony. The Lingiari House prayer, written by the first cohort of Lingiari House students in 2011, is a simple expression of the values they have drawn from Vincent’s example.
Lord,
Help us to stand up for what we believe in,
To respect and value others,
and to show persistence and determination as work for others, not just ourselves.
Amen.
I look forward to sharing more about the College mission with you throughout the year.

Welcome to 2023 and to a couple of changes in the Shalom College libraries. The adoption of a new digital textbook platform will help the move of heavy texts out of school bags and back on shelves. Of course, digital text book provision is not new but after a lot of ground work and a couple of minor hiccups, the new platform from Readcloud should promote this paradigm shift from the physical to continue in a meaningful and effective manner.
Ms Eizema will be primarily located in the Goondeel (Senior) library overseeing all things digital, digitised and archival as she continues to scan Brother Rochford’s extensive photographic history of Shalom College as we creep closer to our 40th year in 2024.
As we farewell Mrs Kim Toll who has moved over to assist in Pathways, the Beerarlem (Junior) library introduces two new staff members Mrs Fleur Wooldridge and Miss Taila Saint. Mrs Wooldridge’s friendly face will be a regular feature at the circulation desk, but she will also take care of our special events such as the up-coming Somerset Storyfest Writers’ Festival. Miss Saint has been given a role that meets her aspirations to become a teacher and her desire to continue working with the students in CSB as she did in 2022 as a participant of the gap-year program. She will act in a student literacy enrichment position that is a collaborative library-CSB program that will support the literacy of our youngest students.
At this point it is important to consider that repetitive reading stimulates physical changes in the brain as it forges new connections and fortifies the neural pathways, specifically in the areas of reading. This helps less developed readers to encourage brain activity patterns that resemble those of stronger readers. As brain plasticity increases and patterns change, significant improvements for word processing, decoding, reading comprehension and language functions will be seen.
Neuroscientist Maximilian Riesenhuber focussed his studies on a tiny area of the brain involved in recognising words. This is known as the visual word form area (VWFA) and is located on the surface of the brain behind the left ear and is the area also responsible for the recognition of faces. As literacy progresses the VWFA is co-opted for ‘word recognition’, and as we become more proficient we accumulate a visual dictionary. Neuroscientific models assert that although our language control becomes a case of visual recognition, the vehicle of sound is still vital in building the cadence and ‘melody’ of our language cognition … reading to our young remains a valuable supplementary activity even after visual recognition is in full development.
it’s never too late to help a struggling reader to remap his or her brain to become a more successful reader.

Rowing - Oarsome Opportunity Available
With Sports Sign on fast approaching, we wanted to share with you a different sport - Rowing. Rowing is a unique school team sport that is only offered in high school.
Shalom has a strong rowing team and is looking for new recruits. Training is twice a week on the river at different times (not all crews train early morning, some train in the afternoon). There is also extra training available after school at the gym and with the rowing machines. The school competition involves two practice regattas and the final competitive Head of River Regatta in Semester 1. Then there is an opportunity to compete in more regattas in Semester 2 against other regions. There is a yearly fee due to boats, facilities, maintenance and insurance. Shalom Rowing is a fun family orientated group that is involved in all aspects of rowing – coaching, fundraising, maintenance, cleaning etc. Rowing is an all over body workout that not only builds students physically but supports their mental, emotional and social growth and development. If your child is interested, please sign on via Sia and we will communicate about our Come and Try mornings soon. Looking forward to seeing this oarsome team grow. Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
If you are interested in volunteering at our College Tuckshop, we would love for you to indicate your availability and book a shift following the link below.
The booking system helps to accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and have a day here or there throughout the year. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 4155 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2-3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
The Shalom Markets are open every Sunday 6am-midday. Come along to purchase your fresh fruit and vegetables, local food products and handmade items.
