Year 12 Exam Block
Year 12 students will participate in an exam block from Monday 20 February - Wednesday 22 February. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached below. Students participating in this exam block will undergo Unit 3 assessment. This assessment is summative and as such will contribute towards the ATAR score. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.
During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.
Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block. These expectations are outlined in the attached documents.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.

2023 Theme - Gifts
In October of 2020, Pope Francis released an encyclical, Fratelli Tutti, that promoted fraternity and social friendship. In this letter, the Pope tells us that human beings are made so that they cannot live, develop and find fulfilment except “in the sincere gift of self to others” (par 87). The pandemic certainly demonstrated that we are at our best when we come together and help each other.
For this reason, our 2023 theme is ‘Gifts’: the sincere gift of self to others.
Each of us brings our own gifts to the encounter we have with each other; a richness of beliefs and convictions, skills and talents, cultures, and history. We are challenged to deliberately engage with our community to find out how our gifts can contribute to the common good, to help raise others up and to promote justice and peace.
In recognition of this theme, our student leaders shared this prayer on Assembly last week.
As we join together for a new school year, may we bring with us an openness to encountering others,
To accepting the gift the other brings and in turn offering an authentic gift of our own.
In doing so, may we celebrate the fraternity and solidarity of our community,
In your name.
Amen.

Core Studies A
We have had a great start to the year in CSA and have had the opportunity to participate in some exciting learning experiences.
Year 7
This week our Year 7 students had the opportunity to experience the Starlab as part of their Natural Phenomena Unit. The show included a range of day and night sky presentations, discovering planets and the interactions between the sun, earth and moon.
James enjoyed the dome experience and learnt how the moon effects the tides.
Bear enjoyed the transitions between the different views form the projector and learnt that the sun is not even close to being the biggest star.
Annica really enjoyed the coyote animation and wonders what would happen if we didn’t have a moon.
Our year 8 CSA students had the opportunity to be amazed by a science show presented by Dr Joseph Ireland. This was an engaging introduction to our Chemistry unit we are studying this term. The students witnessed a range of physical and chemical reactions as Dr Joe explained the wonderful world of chemistry.
Finn really enjoyed when the ball pit barrel exploded. He also learnt that white light is made up of the colours of the rainbow and could see this with the special glasses the students were given.
Rose enjoyed the liquid nitrogen reactions and saw that the colour of a flame, changes with different chemicals.
The students learnt a lot during these presentations and look forward to investigating these topics further through their science units of study this term.

“I usually don’t borrow library books because I couldn’t read them – now I can!”
This was the great feedback that we had from one student this week when he discovered our new dyslexic font fiction collections. The students at Shalom have had access to ebooks in dyslexic font for a while in the Sora platform (accessed through Sia) but for those who prefer to hold a physical book both the junior and the senior libraries now feature a small but growing collection of books in dyslexic font.
There is confusion about the concept of dyslexia, whether it is a condition or a disorder, dyslexia experts assert that it is actually neither, the best definition is that is an “unexpected difficulty with reading” (Shaywitz, 2020). Dyslexia is language-based with clustered symptoms that relate to language and reading. Far from being a sign of unwillingness to learn or lower intelligence, the ‘stealth’ dyslexic is actually extremely clever and develops coping mechanisms that mask their difficulty by filling in gaps and memorizing. It takes skill to disguise their issues and so these bright children typically seem to have extremely good comprehension at quite a young age. Reading ultimately requires automatic decoding, the stealth dyslexic appears to be decoding well but in reality, they are not so much decoding as they are reciting. The cognitive delays that lay at the heart of dyslexia can be overcome in most cases but access to specially designed print matter helps acquaint the child with the art of reading.
Until quite recently dyslexic reading material seemed only to be aimed at primary school aged children, luckily there are now publishing houses that can supply our high school aged students with relevant reading material.
