We farewelled our Year 12s on Friday and, through the liturgy, left them with a couple of simple but timeless messages. The Scripture reminded them of Jesus, who, when challenged by the lawyers, cut through about a thousand years of ritual and law that constrained every part of Jewish life and culture. He said all of that could be summed up in one commandment, “Love your neighbour, as yourself”. Friday was also the anniversary of the passing of one of our ‘Shalom Heroes’, Mr Kerry Bolam. He made a profound impact on so many students here and his constant mantra was, “In a world where you can be anything, Be Kind’. For neither Jesus nor Kerry was that a version of ‘saccharin Christianity’. It’s much more than being nice. Loving those around us and being kind would be so much easier if that just applied to people we liked.
Awards Night 2023 was another excellent night for the College. Almost 500 Shalom students were recognised for their efforts in class and their achievements. Those young people deserve to be acclaimed. Those present also enjoyed some wonderful entertainment from our very talented musicians and singers.

Parental Consents
As part of Catholic Education – Diocese of Rockhampton (CEDR), Shalom College has as its highest priority the safety and well-being of our students. One of our key processes for upholding student protection is seeking up-to-date parental consents to inform how we share student images and information in accordance with parent directives. Shalom College is subject to Australian Privacy Principles and as per compliance and best practice guidelines we have introduced an online consent system accessible through Parent Lounge to enable parents to update their consent.
You may recall receiving a phone call or an email previously requesting you to update these consents from our office staff who assisted you to complete this request. Thank you to everyone who has updated these consents to ensure Shalom is compliant.
There are five (5) areas of consents. We are requesting for a school our size that parents/guardians select “Y” (yes) to ALL 5 fields.
At number 5 ‘Disclosing data with ACARA’. CEDR encourages parents/guardians to provide your information, the exclusion of data could result in reduced funding for the Catholic school your child/children attend.
To ensure your consents have been updated please access the online Parental Consent via Parent Lounge. If you have not done so previously a how-to guide is attached to this email to assist you. If your need further assistance, please contact the office on 4155 8111.
We are asking you to update these consents by 31 October 2023. Thank you for partnering with us to further enhance our student protection processes.
SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday, Tuesdays are 8.30am - 3.30 pm.

Our team of Year 12 Business, Legal Studies and Accounting students - Amelia, Erika, Ryland and Finley - were presented with engraved medals and scholarship offer letters during Week 3 of this term by Minka Elliott, School Manager for the School of Business and Law at CQU.
The Challenge comprises questions from these study areas and our team competed against 34 teams from 21 schools in the first round, winning the Wide Bay Division and obtaining the highest result across all schools. We then competed against eight teams in the final round.
In addition to holding the Challenge Shield for the next year, our students each received a scholarship of $4000 to CQUniversity and Shalom received a $2000 cash prize.
Congratulations to our students on their success and thank you to CQUniversity for their ongoing support of students in the Business Challenge.
Film, Television and New Media Screening
“Every time I go to the Movies, it magics, no matter what the movie’s about.” Steven Spielberg
Shalom senior Film, Television and New Media classes celebrated the culmination of all their hard work last Wednesday night in the Performing Arts Precinct, with a screening of different student’s film projects. Our teacher of senior Film, Television and New Media, Ms Jacqui Smith, invited friends and family to come along and watch the different styles and genres created this year. From the horror films of the Year 11’s to the abstract experimental films of our Year 12’s, there was a large range of films to watch. A great night was had by all and it was wonderful to see their work up on the big screen.

Year 12 Sport and Recreation
As a part of their final assessment, the Shalom College Year 12 Sport and Recreation students have been engaging in community recreation activities in the format of Lawn Bowls. Over six weeks the students were coached by Brothers Bowls Club members Terry and Tim who gave up their valuable time (several times a week, often twice a day) to try and impart some of the foundational skills of lawn bowls to the Year 12 students.
Every student improved in their understanding of the game, the etiquette required in a game of lawn bowls and some students were even able to use strategy to successfully win the ‘end’. Most importantly some relationships were formed between these two gentlemen and the students, and many life lessons and pearls of wisdom were imparted from both coach and student.
Mr Craig Hammermeister and I would like to sincerely thank Terry, Tim and the Brothers Bowls Club for volunteering their time and facilities which allowed our students the opportunity to learn a new sport that they will hopefully continue to play long into their future.
If anyone is interested in learning how to play Lawn Bowls please contact the Brothers Bowls Club via email: brosbowlsclub@gmail.com

Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 4155 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2-3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
The Shalom Markets are open every Sunday 6am-midday. Come along to purchase your fresh fruit and vegetables, local food products and handmade items.
