Between the Easter weekend, the death of Pope Francis and ANZAC Day, it’s been a very significant 10 days. Service and Sacrifice are a common theme between the three events. Jesus was executed because he preached a Gospel of Inclusion, Love and Service. Pope Francis lived that out and called us all to live more simply and faithfully. We commemorate the ANZAC tradition for the courage and sacrifice of so many, for others – for us. May we all continue to be inspired by those individuals and events.
Big Names at Shalom in May – on Thursday May 22 Australian Basketballer Lauren Jackson will be at Shalom working with our students. That evening, in our theatre, she will give a presentation to the wider Bundaberg community. Hers is an amazing story.
The following night, Tom Busby, of ‘Busby Marou’ fame, will be performing in our theatre. Tom will be offering an ‘acoustic concert’. This event was scheduled earlier but was interrupted by Cyclone Alfred.
This is two great nights and I hope that many Shalom families and families in Bundaberg make the most of this opportunity to be inspired and entertained by these two wonderful talents. The link for tickets to each event –

The Federal election is almost upon us. If you would like to know more about how the policies of the major parties affect Catholic Education, please read the following from Ms Jacinta Collins who is the Chair of the National Catholic Education Council -
How do the major parties and candidates score on Catholic Education priorities?
We are now in the third week of a five-week election campaign period, and as the 2025 Federal Election approaches on 3 May, Catholic Education has released a Federal Election Scorecard to highlight where political parties and key independent candidates stand on issues of importance for Catholic schools.
The scorecard has been developed for families and staff to easily identify the education policies and commitments of the Australian Labor Party, the Liberal National Coalition, the Australian Greens, and key independent candidates on five key areas: funding certainty, support for faith-based schools, sector-neutrality, addressing disadvantage, and early childhood education.
While the major parties largely support our priorities, the Greens received a clear X from us because they leave Catholic schools isolated and excluded from their policy commitments.
Their focus is on public schools alone, and their proposed policies to further top-up public school funding will adversely affect Catholic schools in real terms.
The Greens' announcement of free lunches for public school kids costing $11.6 billion over the next three years, is the latest example of their ongoing failure to recognise the character of the Australian school education system.
They’ve failed to acknowledge Catholic school families in their cost-of-living proposals — assuming only public school families are doing it tough, which is untrue and unfair.
The Greens have also consistently advocated and voted against Catholic schools having the ability to preference and employ staff who support the Catholic ethos, despite strong and growing public support for faith-based schools.
I encourage you to read and share the scorecard with Catholic school families and staff so our communities can be as informed as possible on polling day.
Shalom Parents & Friends has for many years, struggled to attract attendance at meetings. I can’t remember having more than a handful of interested parents attend a meeting in many years. There is no point continuing a structure that is not fulfilling a need. A proposal has been put forward to amalgamate the P&F and the College Board. The Board is made up of Shalom parents and, occasionally, past parents. The proposal would have one extra member of the Board nominated as the liaison to the Parents & Friends body as we have known it. I would welcome any feedback from parents on this proposal.

Welcome back to Term 2
A warm welcome back to all Shalom families. We hope that the Easter break was restful and that all students are feeling refreshed and ready for learning. Term two can seem particularly busy with many events and public holidays. Taking time to review your child’s preparedness for the term and reflect on their organisational and study strategies for homework and assessment is a worthwhile step for encouraging a successful term.
Parents are encouraged to work with their students to develop appropriate homework and study plans – the Record Book is a helpful tool for this purpose. A Homework Study Plan and a Term Planner is included for each term (see p.72 - 75 for Term Two). A monthly or term overview for your child’s study location at home is also a good strategy.
Heads of Department assign assessment tasks in each faculty area and class teachers adapt these to specific days/lessons when applicable. Please be aware that some tasks with multiple components may be duplicated in the Due Work Calendar. Early each term, teachers review term planning and set dates for the term’s assessment. Parents can access upcoming assessment dates for their children via Sia. Each student has a “Due Work Calendar” that shows upcoming dates for checkpoints, drafts, and exams. To access this calendar for your child in the Sia Smartphone App please select “My Shalom” and then “Due Work.” On the webpage, an option to select Due Work will show under your child’s photograph on the home page.
Tutoring Timetable Term 2
Tutoring is offered by a number of teaching staff across a range of subject areas outside of class time. Please refer to the below Term 2 Tutoring Timetable and encourage your child to make contact with the teacher if they feel they would like additional assistance via tutoring.

Head to Heart: A Meaningful Experience for Shalom and Bundaberg
At the end of last term, Shalom College had the privilege of hosting the Edmund Rice Head to Heart Program on campus. The one-day program brought together students, staff, and local mentors for a day focused on reflection, connection, and personal development.
The Head to Heart initiative is designed to give young people a break from their regular routines and offer a space to explore values, relationships, and identity in a supportive environment. Students participated in group discussions, and activities in a unique 1:1 ratio. crafted to push shalom students out of their comfort zones to become role models and ‘big buddies’ for at risk youth in the Bundaberg and greater region that encouraged openness and strengthened peer relationships.
We would like to thank the Bundaberg Chop Shop for their generous donation of food to support the program. Their contribution played a vital role in making the day possible. Acknowledgement also goes to Rice House, and to Scott Whitelaw and Cheryl Petersen (Campus Minister) for their support, guidance, and facilitation throughout the day.
Programs like Head to Heart benefit not only the students involved, but also the wider Shalom and Bundaberg communities. They help build emotional resilience, community spirit, and shared understanding, all of which are essential to a healthy school culture.
We look forward to continuing to support initiatives like these that enrich the lives of our students and strengthen our school community.

Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our Year 11 and Year 10 students.

Congratulations to Riley M from Rice PC1.
In March this year, he competed in the Little Athletics States Championships in Brisbane.
Riley achieved a personal best in the triple jump event of 12.47 (50+cm ) placing Riley 2nd overall.
He also competed in the 100m sprint, placing 4th overall in the final with another personal best of 11.93secs.
A week later Riley spent the weekend in Perth competing in the Australian Junior Athletic National Championships. With an awesome triple jump of 12.83 metres (another new Personal best for Riley) he placed 4th in Australia, only 3cm off 3rd place!
An awesome effort. Well done!
If you would like to submit any sporting achievements about your child/children along with a photo, please email your submissions to Simon_Gills@rok.catholic.edu.au
Please note photo submissions must only include photos of students from Shalom.
You can also keep up to date with anything sport related via our Facebook page - Shalom College Sport.

Junior Track Cycling Championships
In the last week of March, Shalom student Elise V proudly represented the QLD Junior National Track Cycling Team, competing in every event at the Junior Track Cycling Championships. Although she missed out on medalling by as little as one second, she delivered impressive performances. Her efforts contributed to securing QLD’s overall Championship win.
Elise’s results were as follows:
- 6th in the 2000m Individual Pursuit
- 8th in the Scratch Race
- 10th in the 200m Sprint Race
- 12th in the Points Race
- 15th in the Time Trial
Congratulations on a massive effort!

Table Tennis Finals Day
Both Shalom Open and Junior teams represented at the table tennis finals day on Friday 4 April.
The Junior team of Cooper L., Kayden L., Jacob D. and Cayden S. finished second after the regular rounds. In their semi-final, Shalom Juniors faced off against St Lukes 1 and had a convincing win of five matches to three. Cooper L. and Kayden L. were strong in not losing any of their match ups. In the final, the boys were up against the top team in the Junior Division – St Lukes 3. After a promising start with a win to Kayden L., it was one way traffic with St Lukes 3 winning the next five matches straight to claim overall victory.
The Open team of Oscar Q., William M. and Isaac M. finished first in the Open Division after the regular rounds. They trounced their semi-final opponents in St Lukes 5 by five matches to one. The boys continued their winning ways in the final against Kepnock with a five games to two win. While all three boys played well, Oscar Q. can claim overall bragging rights by not losing a match all day.
All of the Shalom players played in great spirit – putting in their best competitive effort while also enjoying their games. Each student is to be commended on their positive attitude, exceptional behaviour, and sportsmanship. Well done.
Athletic Championships
Congratulations to Shalom student Riley M, who has had a huge couple of weeks in Athletics. Riley had an amazing last weekend in March at Little Athletics States Championships in Brisbane. A triple jump massive personal best of 12.47 (50+cm ) placing Riley 2nd and an awesome run in 100m placing 4th overall in the final with another PB 11.93secs.
A week later Riley spent the weekend in Perth competing in the Australia Junior Athletic National Championships. With an awesome triple jump of 12.83 metres (another new PB for Riley) he placed 4th in Australia, only 3cm off 3rd place!
Well done Riley, all your commitment and hard work has definitely paid off
Junior Athletic Championships
Congratulations to Shalom student Koby I who has been in Perth competing at the Australian Junior Athletic Championships. Koby has ‘walked’ away with a new pb of 14:32.55 and is now ranked 2nd Nationally in the Under 16 Men's 3000m Race Walk. Koby's hard work and dedication have paid off.
National Rowing Championships
During week 9, Rowing Australia held the 2025 National Championships in Tasmania. This attracted a record number of 2,100 athletes from all over the country, amongst them were 3 students who represented both Shalom College and Bundaberg Rowing Club. Max L (Yr 9), Wade C (Yr 9) and Sophie E (Yr 11) competed in a variety of boat classes, including single scull, double and quad. Despite being some of the youngest in their competing age groups, they still pushed themselves to ensure they progressed towards the finals. Often, it was only the top 1-3 placings who progressed to the next race, so there were many close battles to reach these positions. Whilst there were no podium finishes, it was certainly an experience to be had!
U17 Men’s Double - Heat – 4th → Repechage – 4th
U17 Men’s Quad - Heat – 4th → Repechage – 4th
Schoolgirls Single - Heat – 6th → Repechage – 3rd → Quarter-Final – 8th
U19 Women’s Double – Heat – 4th → Repechage – 5th

This Term your son or daughter will be involved in an outdoor education camp, held at Chaverim. The camps will be in House Groups, so the students will go out with their Head of House. Students will participate in outdoor education activities as the camp is part of a three-year program.
These Outdoor Education programs aim to provide an additional approach to the personal and spiritual development of your child and the greater Shalom community. This three-year program has specific objectives designed to provide.
- An atmosphere of cooperation between students, which can be applied at school, in the family and on the sports field. This may be characterized by cooperation, encouragement and concern for fellow students.
- Knowledge, skills and attitudes that contribute to a sense of responsibility, self-reliance, cooperation and harmony within oneself, with other people, and with the natural environment.
- Opportunities for participants to develop knowledge, low level skills and attitudes for participation in a number of outdoor pursuits.
- Knowledge, skills and attitudes towards a ‘minimum impact ethic’ consistent with the environment in which activities take place.
Each participant involved in the program will be given the opportunity to:
- “Look into the mirror” to see how their behaviours, both good and bad, impact their fellow participants.
- Participate in physically and mentally challenging activities while remaining safe on physical, mental and emotional levels.
- Experience and practice Christian values by living and working together in an open and encouraging atmosphere.
- Develop low level skills in a number of outdoor activities as well as a basic understanding of the associated equipment and safety precautions.
- Experience achievement in a non-competitive ‘win-win’ environment.
The camp also gives the teacher and students the opportunity to get to know each other well.
NO PHONES ARE ALLOWED ON THESE OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMPS AT CHAVERIM.
The staff in charge will collect phones at the start of camp and return them just before 3.00 pm on day three. Alternatively, keep the phone at home for safe keeping.
I am sure the students will survive without their phones for 3 days and then they can focus on the outdoor education opportunities. If students need to call home for any reason the staff will let them use the phone at the Chaverim office.
The students will be transported to Chaverim by the College bus on the first day of camp. Students will need to be at school by 8.30 am the morning of the camp; they will return to the College at approximately 2.45 pm in time to catch the bus etc on the third day of camp.
Please find attached:
- Camp Program
- Equipment List - Clothes should be functional and suitable for outdoor and adventure activities and provide adequate protection from the elements. Camp is not a time to be fashion conscious; clothes need to be very practical. Students are also to be reminded that Chaverim is a Shalom College campus and all the usual College expectations apply. The wearing of unnecessary jewellery, make-up and inappropriate clothing is not permitted.
- Administration of Medication to Students form - if your child requires medication while on Camp please complete the form and hand it to your Teacher prior to departing on Camp.
Please login to Parent Lounge to give permission for your child to attend the Camp.
Once there click on the ‘Events and Payments’ tab and you will find a link to Year 8 Camp. Here you will be able to give permission for your child to attend, as well as view details about the camp. You will also be asked to review and verify that your child’s medical details are correct.
To check your child’s medical information is current, please click on the ‘student details’ tab and go to ‘medical details’. Please make sure that the following sections are completed so that your child can participate in all activities on camp.
- Can Swim 25m
- Tetanus Up-To-Date
- Medicare Number
In the ‘medical conditions’ section, click ‘add new’ and you will see a drop-down box and notes section where you can also note any dietary requirements, sleeping issues and other details that you feel may be relevant to your child’s well-being at the camp. Once you are happy with the information you have provided, please click ‘verify’.
Please also check your contact details and phone numbers are current, as we will be using this information to contact you if needed.
It is very important that all information in the Parent Lounge is current as teachers will use this information in case of an emergency and to support the wellbeing of your child.

If your child/children would like to gain some work experience, why not get them to volunteer in the canteen. If you have a few hours you could spare to assist in our canteen, please click on the link below to register your assistance or contact Leanne via email at Leanne_Barker@rok.catholic.edu.au
If we get enough volunteers, it may work out that you only need to volunteer once per term.
