My first week back from Leave and very grateful to Ms Gail Norris along with Mr Aaron Brown and Mr Peter Robinson for ‘stepping up’ while I was away. We have a great team of staff at Shalom who are enormously talented and reliable. Last Wednesday we celebrated Ash Wednesday and the start of the season of Lent. The Church gives us this season as an opportunity to reflect on where we can be better as individuals and as a society. We are encouraged to make a positive difference locally and globally. During the Ash Wednesday liturgies conducted in each House, the great work that Carits Australia do were highlighted particularly in regard to the efforts Caritas is making in Pacific nations where kids going to school, don’t have easy access to drinking water.
The biggest complaint our student have at Shalom is that the temperature is not quite perfect on the cold water bubblers! Too often, around the world, we are seeing countries focussed on themselves to the detriment of those most in need. That will have devastating impacts on those most at risk. Caritas, the Gospel and Lent remind all of us that Jesus reminds us clearly that we will be judged on the degree to which each of us reach out in response to those in need.
Last week I was contacted by a family who requested, because they were not Catholic, that their child not have to participate in the Ash Wednesday liturgy. This was a request I declined. Shalom is a Catholic College. We are very clear about that to all at point of enrolment. That said, we have students at Shalom of all faiths and none. No one here will make demands of a student’s faith response but we will expect that all participate in the liturgies we have with quiet and respectful attendance.
Busby Marou Fans! We’ve been able to secure Tom Busby of Busby Marou to come to Shalom for our Harmony Day celebration on Thursday 20 March. Tom will offer an acoustic concert in our Theatre on that night. Tickets are on sale now, see link below. Tom is a great entertainer and this will be a fundraiser for our travelling sports teams this year. Tickets are $40 per adult and $30 for school aged children.

School Funding & the looming Federal Election – it is highly likely that the Prime Minister will shortly announce the date of the next Federal election. I will not be surprised if the funding received from the Government by schools like Shalom will come into the spotlight – somewhere after Chinese destroyers off Bargara. Schools and funding is a regular election topic. Our fees increased this year as the Federal Government changed its funding formula. One of the key planks of that is to ask families who choose Catholic or Independent school education for their child to pay more if their circumstances allow that. The following short clip is worth a look to give a better understanding of how the funding arrangements currently work -

NAPLAN
Year 7 and 9 students completed NAPLAN practice tests last week. 2025 NAPLAN testing will take place in March on the following dates:
· Wednesday March 12 – Writing
· Friday March 14 – Reading
· Monday March 17 – Conventions of Language
· Wednesday March 19 – Numeracy
A more detailed timetable can be found in SIA News.
If students are absent on the day of any of the exams, the following catch-up sessions will be available. Students will attend the session that corresponds with their return to school:
Catch up sessions
Thursday 13 March P1 in HO5
Tuesday 18 March P2 in HO3 and HO4
Tuesday 18 March P3 in MA1
Friday 21 March P1 in RI2 and RI4
Monday 24 March P2 in RI3 and RI4
As with any test, it is important for students to maintain a healthy diet and ensure a good night's sleep leading up to the testing period. Each student should strive to perform at their best across all testing domains.
The results from testing are used in conjunction with other data to assess individual and cohort strengths as well as areas to improve on. We review existing initiatives and develop teaching programs to support students based on the data.
Earphones (corded) are compulsory for NAPLAN testing. Students who present to the test session without earphones will be sold a set at a cost of $6 which will be charged to the students’ account. We urge all students to keep their earphones in their pencil case ready for testing sessions. Earphones must have a 3.5mm standard jack.
2025 Next Step Year 12 Completers Survey
All Year 12 completers from 2024 will soon receive an invitation to participate in the Next Step survey. This is their chance to help our school to understand the different pathways of the 2024 Year 12 students and to improve our senior programs and supports for future students. The survey only takes five minutes and asks graduates about their study and work activities since finishing school.
As a thank you for participating, Year 12 completers who complete the survey will be entered into a draw to win a MacBook Air.
We ask parents, siblings and friends to encourage our graduates to complete the survey. If their contact details have changed, please assist survey interviewers by providing their updated details or forward the survey to their new address so they can participate. Graduates may receive an invitation by mail, email or phone. The survey can be completed online or by phone. For more information about Next Step, including previous results, visit http://www.qld.gov.au/nextstep.

School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI) Information
To provide education opportunities for families that have limited internet access at home, the Australian Government is providing free National Broadband Network (NBN) services for eligible families. This is called the School Student Broadband Initiative (SSBI).
Families can self-nominate until the end of April 2025 to receive a free service, and they will receive this free service until 30 June 2028. This is a wonderful opportunity for families that may have limited capacity to have home internet.
There are eligibility criteria for the initiative. To be eligible, a family must:
· Have a child living at home that is enrolled in an Australian school.
· Have no active broadband service over the NBN, and not had an active service in the past 14 days.
· Live in a premise that can access a standard NBN service.
Please see the attached flyer for information on how to apply.

Learner Attributes
Throughout Week 6 (3 – 7 March), teachers will give feedback through Sia on the learning behaviours of students in each of their classes, as well as PC classes.
Each student will be awarded either an Excellent (5), Good (4), Sound (3), Improvement Needed (2), or Poor (1) in the following criteria:
- Organisation - punctual to class, correct equipment in good working order (academic only), laptop charged (academic only), record book present
- Application - actively engaged in learning/PC activities, appropriate use of technology (laptop, phone etc), homework complete (academic only)
- Presentation - uniform worn appropriately, follows school guidelines for hair, make-up, jewellery etc
- College Values - treats others with dignity and respect, displays a positive attitude, exhibits appropriate behaviour
This will appear on Sia Parent Dashboard under ‘Grades’.
and will appear as a mark out of 20.
More detailed information can be found by clicking on the ‘Learning Attributes – Semester 1’ link on the above screen.
After the initial feedback is published, teachers are able to update these criteria and re-publish them to parents at any time throughout the year and add a comment if necessary. Parents are advised of updates via Notifications in Sia. In this way, reporting on your child’s application in class is ‘live’, improving the quality of feedback for parents. We believe this is a significant improvement in our communication with parents, compared with the previous ‘point-in-time’ reporting.
If you have any questions about your feedback, please contact the classroom teacher. For questions about the Learning Attributes process, please contact me.

Ash Wednesday
Last Wednesday we gathered in House Assemblies to mark the start of our Lenten journey through prayer and the distribution of the blessed ashes. Students from each House led the prepared liturgy and encouraged their peers to focus less on themselves this Lent and to grow in generosity. One way this generosity can be expressed is through donating to Caritas’ Project Compassion. While donation boxes are present in each House area, donations online are also welcome.
Shalom College - Bundaberg • Project Compassion 2025
Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our year 11 and 12 students.
Wednesday 12 March Mrs Sandra Freeman's SOR 12A & Ms Van Dalen's RAE 12E
Wednesday 19 March Mrs Nicole Harman's RAE 12D & RAE 11 A & E

CHESS NEWS!!
“Excellence at chess is one mark of a scheming mind.”
On Wednesday 26 February, 15 chess players triumphantly represented Shalom at the Term 1 Inter-School Chess Competition at St Luke’s College. A somewhat depleted Shalom team competed fiercely and, although not attaining any medals, achieved some good results. Our top team of Shalom Black came 5th on the day while our second highest team came 7th – well done to these teams. In addition, Jacob B and Alexander C showed what improved players they are by achieving merit ribbons for winning at least 4.5 games – fantastic results from these boys.

If you are interested in playing or learning chess, then you are more than welcome to join us at chess club on Tuesdays at 11.25am-12.00pm in Beerarlem. The more the merrier! You can find more information about Shalom Chess on our Chess Group Page (https://schoolbox.shalomcollege.com/homepage/6024).

A bit more about Emily and Coronis Bundaberg...
Why did you decide to come on board and sponsor the Shalom Netball Program / Netball Academy?
Being a netball player myself, I love being involved in the sport and passionate about supporting other business's and programs. Each year I dedicate marketing/sponsorship money to a local event and when I heard QISSN was being held in Bundaberg this year, it aligned.
Your daughter Elexia is an Academy participant – any feedback from her so far?
Elexia loves netball. She would play it every day if she could. After missing out on playing representative netball this year, her confidence was rocked and she started losing her love for the sport. I reminded her how much she will learn from Academy coaches and to take the year to develop her skills from such a strong player. I can't wait to hear what she says about it by the end of the year.
Tell us about Coronis Bundaberg...
Having worked in the industry for the best part of 16 years, I opened my own Property Management agency 'Coronis Bundaberg' in December 2022. With nothing but blind faith, I set out to provide a service that exceeded the expectations of my clients and peers. Having won an accolade of awards in my career, myself and my team specialise in building and maintaining solid relationships with all stakeholders.

Coronis Bundaberg is located at 2/24 Burrum St, Bundaberg West. For more information visit www.coronis.com.au/agency/coronis-bundaberg/ or call 07 4152 1371 and speak to one of the team.
It was great to see you Emily - come again soon!
INTRODUCING - THE NETBALL SHOT PRO
Calling all interested / wanabe goalers! Whether curious, budding or experienced - come along and check out The Netball Shot Pro machine...
Former Australian International netballer (Kelpie #83, Goal Attack), Greg Heinrich, is a Co-Founder of Inspire Netball Group, and the creator of The Netball Shot Pro.
The Netball Shot Pro is a netball shooting correction machine, and is designed for netballers at all levels of the game, to improve their accuracy and consistency in shooting.
Thank you Coronis Bundaberg, our wonderful sponsorship team and to students and families undertaking fundraising activities like assisting at the Markets BBQ - you all are contributing to making opportunities like this happen ❤️

This Term your son or daughter will be involved in an outdoor education camp, held at Chaverim. The camps will be in Core Studies classes, so the students will go out with their Core Studies teacher or in some instances, another teacher.
These Outdoor Education programs aim to provide an additional approach to the personal and spiritual development of your child and the greater Shalom community. This three-year program has specific objectives designed to provide.
● An atmosphere of cooperation between students, which can be applied at school, in the family and on the sports field. This may be characterized by cooperation, encouragement and concern for fellow students.
● Knowledge, skills and attitudes that contribute to a sense of responsibility, self-reliance, cooperation and harmony within oneself, with other people, and with the natural environment.
● Opportunities for participants to develop knowledge, low level skills and attitudes for participation in a number of outdoor pursuits.
● Knowledge, skills and attitudes towards a ‘minimum impact ethic’ consistent with the environment in which activities take place.
Each participant involved in the program will be given the opportunity to:
● “Look into the mirror” to see how their behaviours, both good and bad, impact their fellow participants.
● Participate in physically and mentally challenging activities while remaining safe on physical, mental and emotional levels.
● Experience and practice Christian values by living and working together in an open and encouraging atmosphere.
● Develop low level skills in a number of outdoor activities as well as a basic understanding of the associated equipment and safety precautions.
● Experience achievement in a non-competitive ‘win-win’ environment.
The camp also gives the teacher and students the opportunity to get to know each other well.
NO PHONES ARE ALLOWED ON THESE OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMPS AT CHAVERIM.
The staff in charge will collect phones at the start of camp and return them just before 3.00 pm on day three. Alternatively, keep the phone at home for safe keeping.
I am sure the students will survive without their phones for 3 days and then they can focus on the outdoor education opportunities. If students need to call home for any reason the staff will let them use the phone at the Chaverim office.
The students will be transported to Chaverim by the College bus on the first day of camp. Students will need to be at school by 8.30 am the morning of the camp; they will return to the College at approximately 2.45 pm in time to catch the bus etc on the third day of camp.
Please find attached information at the bottom:
1. Camp Program
2. Equipment List - Clothes should be functional and suitable for outdoor and adventure activities and provide adequate protection from the elements. Camp is not a time to be fashion conscious; clothes need to be very practical. Students are also to be reminded that Chaverim is a Shalom College campus and all the usual College expectations apply. The wearing of unnecessary jewellery, make-up and inappropriate clothing is not permitted.
3. Administration of Medication to Students form - if your child requires medication while on Camp please complete the form and hand it to your Teacher prior to departing on Camp.
Please login to Parent Lounge to give permission for your child to attend the Camp.
Once there click on the ‘Events and Payments’ tab and you will find a link to Year 8 Camp. Here you will be able to give permission for your child to attend, as well as view details about the camp. You will also be asked to review and verify that your child’s medical details are correct.
To check your child’s medical information is current, please click on the ‘student details’ tab and go to ‘medical details’. Please make sure that the following sections are completed so that your child can participate in all activities on camp.
● Can Swim 25m
● Tetanus Up-To-Date
● Medicare Number
In the ‘medical conditions’ section, click ‘add new’ and you will see a drop-down box and notes section where you can also note any dietary requirements, sleeping issues and other details that you feel may be relevant to your child’s well-being at the camp. Once you are happy with the information you have provided, please click ‘verify’.
Please also check your contact details and phone numbers are current, as we will be using this information to contact you if needed.
It is very important that all information in the Parent Lounge is current as teachers will use this information in case of an emergency and to support the wellbeing of your child.
If you require assistance with Parent Lounge login, please contact the office. If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me here at the College by phone or email.

From team-building activities to outdoor adventures, the camps empower young people to build confidence, form lasting friendships, and create memories that will shape their futures.
We’d like to give a special shout-out to the following businesses and individuals for their amazing contributions to the night:
First National Woodgate Beach, Sinmac Farms, Bargara Central Hotel, Officeworks Bundaberg, Marquis Macadamias, K-Mart Bundaberg, Dare Beauty, Waves Sports Club, Bundy Bearings, Kath Dickson Institute, Daniel Constructions, Trish Bunderson Hair Dressing, and 24/7 Pilates Bundaberg.
And a special thank you to Andrew Gifford, who generously donated a signed Bulldogs jersey that will be auctioned off later in the term/year to help raise further funds.
Your support truly makes a difference, and we’re so thankful to be part of such a caring and generous community. It’s thanks to you that we can continue offering these life-changing experiences to the kids who need them most.
Thank you once again, and we look forward to seeing you all at future events!!
