The cast and crew of ‘A Chorus Line’ did a fabulous job in this year’s Musical. I was at the Saturday night performance and loved it. I have to admit, I had never heard of ‘A Chorus Line’ as a Musical when it was pitched by staff to us all. Our students were fantastic and just highlighted, yet again, how many really talented and committed students we have at Shalom. As well as being impressed by their talent, I loved the story line. I hope that the students who participated, picked up on that through rehearsals and performances and that story might stay with them. The story line emphasised the importance for an individual to find who they are and to be true to that.

Senior Academic Tutoring Program coordinated by Padea Tutoring
Starting in Term 3, we are trialing an exciting new opportunity available for students in Years 10 to 12 who are interested in receiving external tutoring. We have entered into an agreement with Padea Tutoring to facilitate an external tutoring service, run on location in the Waterford building to begin with, and then moving into the Coolock building when it is completed. The tutoring will be offered each Monday afternoon from 3:30pm to 6:30pm where students undertake 3 hours of tutoring, with a catered dinner provided.
The tutors are university students with an average ATAR of 99. They will tutor students in a ratio of 1:5, and they will focus on the subjects identified by the student, with specific expertise in Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English and Literature.
The cost will be $78 per student per session to be paid directly to Padea, and students will sign up for the duration of the term, 8 weeks in total. Tutoring will start in Week 2 of Term 3.
Please note that this service will not replace the tutoring already offered by our Senior teachers, and you are welcome to continue to access our free school tutoring. This external service will be in addition to what we already offer at a cost to families.
Further information will be provided next week directly from Padea regarding the registration process so please keep an eye out for this opportunity as places are limited to just 25 students initially.

Learning Attributes Year 7/8 Term 2 Rotation Subjects
Learning Attributes for Yr 7/8 Term 2 Rotation Subjects will be published to parents throughout the week of Week 6 in Term 2. Publishing for all subjects will be complete by Friday 30 May.
Each student will be awarded either an Excellent (5), Good (4), Sound (3), Improvement Needed (2), or Poor (1) in the following criteria:
• Organisation - punctual to class, correct equipment in good working order (academic only), laptop charged (academic only), record book present
• Application - actively engaged in learning/PC activities, appropriate use of technology (laptop, phone etc), homework complete (academic only)
• Presentation - uniform worn appropriately, follows school guidelines for hair, make-up, jewellery etc
• College Values - treats others with dignity and respect, displays a positive attitude, exhibits appropriate behaviour
This will appear on Sia Parent Dashboard under ‘Grades’.
After the initial feedback is published, teachers are able to update these criteria and re-publish them to parents at any time throughout the year and add a comment if necessary. Parents are advised of updates via Notifications in Sia. In this way, reporting on your child’s application in class is ‘live’, improving the quality of feedback for parents. We believe this is a significant improvement in our communication with parents, compared with the previous ‘point-in-time’ reporting.
If you have any questions about your feedback, please contact the classroom teacher. For questions about the Learning Attributes process, please contact me.

Chess
On Tuesday 28 May Shalom College proudly participated in the Term 2 Inter-School Chess Tournament, hosted at Shalom College itself. The event saw a strong turnout, with 17 players representing the school across five competitive teams.
• Jacob ‘Perfect Seven’ B-W achieved a remarkable feat by winning all seven of his matches, earning him an individual gold medal.
• Quaid B and Tyler K were each awarded a Merit Ribbon for winning at least 4.5 of their matches, showcasing their consistency and competitive spirit.
Tennis
On Monday 26 May, Shalom College proudly competed in the QSSTT Teams Tennis Tournament held at the Rotary Park Tennis Centre. With five competitive teams representing the College, our students showcased outstanding skill, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the day.

In a strong showing from the senior players, the Open Boys Team 1—comprised of Xander W, Edi R, Harry K, and Nic C - secured a runner-up finish in a closely contested competition. Not far behind, Open Boys Team 2—featuring Jake W, Chase S, George H, and George S - claimed a commendable third place.
George S and George H
Among the Year 7–9 Boys, Team 1 (Jack B, Jai P, Aaron C, and Gabe K) stood out with a remarkable performance, emerging victorious against a strong Discovery Christian College team. Their success earns them the honour of representing Wide Bay at the State QSSTT Teams Tournament in Rockhampton this September. Year 7–9 Boys Team 2 (Lachlan D, Tokoko W, Jack S, and Lorenzo M) also put in a solid performance, finishing fourth on the day.
Aaron C
The Year 7–9 Girls Team—Amelia W, Harmoni M, Kayla McM, and Kayla C - played with great tenacity, drawing with a talented St Luke’s side. Unfortunately, they narrowly missed out on victory following a countback on games.
Throughout the tournament, all Shalom players displayed tremendous spirit, camaraderie, and sportsmanship, making the College proud both on and off the court. Congratulations to all teams on a fantastic effort and best of luck to the Year 7–9 Boys Team 1 as they prepare for the State Tournament!

Rugby League
Congratulations to former Shalom student Tom M on his recent season with Wynnum Manly's Mal Meninga Cup team. Tom was listed in the "PLAYERS WE WOULD HAVE MOST LIKED TO HAVE SELECTED" in the Team of the Year media release;
"A Shalom College alumni from the Bundaberg region, the former Wide Bay Bulls representative tried his heart out all season for the Seagulls.
If he wasn’t Wynnum Manly’s best all year he was a close second or third, constantly asking questions and always reliable on the right edge.
Scored plenty, saved plenty and was strong as an ox with his carries."

Under 15's Wide Bay
Congratulations to Shalom students Brayden M, Freddy M, Hunter W-E, Jacob T, Kaleb M, Kobey W, Lachlan R, Noah K and Tom D-L on representing Wide Bay U15 Schools Rugby League team that competed in Gladstone recently.

Under 18's Wide Bay
Congratulations to Shalom students Jimmy G, Kyan E, Nick D-L, Parkka P-D, Joshua R and Tahj C on representing Wide Bay U18 Schools Rugby League team that competed in Gladstone recently.
Rugby Union

Football
Four Shalom College students represented Wide Bay at the Queensland Representative School Sport U16-19 years Girls Football State Championships at the Gold Coast from 15 – 18 May 2025. All the girls played brilliantly in the Wide Bay team with Georgia C gaining selection as a Shadow Goalkeeper for the Queensland State Team.
Pictured from L-R: Jorja O, Georgia C, Bailey I, and Liliana B.
Congratulations to Shalom student Slater A on his recent selection for the Emerging Socceroos Championship representing Queensland. This is a massive achievement being the only U16 to be selected for Squad from Bundaberg and 1 of 2 from the Wide Bay region.
This is the second occasion he’s been selected. Good luck Slater!!
Congratulations to our Boys Bill Turner Cup team that played in the Wide Bay final against FCAC in Hervey Bay last week. The boys were down 1-0 for most of the second half of the game but scored a late equaliser to take the game into extra-time and eventually a penalty shootout. Unfortunately going down in the end. A tough result but the team played some great football. The boys never gave up and fought hard. Their sportsmanship and commitment were outstanding. Thanks also to Shalom staff Mr Leggett and Mr Cunningham for looking after this side.
Cycling
Congratulations to Shalom student Elise V on her recent result of her 2025 Road Cycling Campaign in Australia’s capital, Canberra, braving wet and chilly conditions over two days of racing. Competing against some of Australia’s top female cyclists, Elise showcased her incredible durability and skill, earning an impressive third-place overall finish.

In Term 2 and 3 your son or daughter will be involved in an outdoor education camp, held at Chaverim. The camps will be in Core Studies classes, so the students will go out with their Core Studies teacher or in some instances, another teacher.
Camp Information
Students will participate in outdoor education activities as the camp is part of a three-year program. These Outdoor Education programs aim to provide an additional approach to the personal and spiritual development of your child and the greater Shalom community. This three-year program has specific objectives designed to provide.
- An atmosphere of cooperation between students, which can be applied at school, in the family and on the sports field. This may be characterized by cooperation, encouragement and concern for fellow students.
- Knowledge, skills and attitudes that contribute to a sense of responsibility, self-reliance, cooperation and harmony within oneself, with other people, and with the natural environment.
- Opportunities for participants to develop knowledge, low level skills and attitudes for participation in a number of outdoor pursuits.
- Knowledge, skills and attitudes towards a ‘minimum impact ethic’ consistent with the environment in which activities take place.
Each participant involved in the program will be given the opportunity to:
- “Look into the mirror” to see how their behaviours, both good and bad, impact their fellow participants.
- Participate in physically and mentally challenging activities while remaining safe on physical, mental and emotional levels.
- Experience and practice Christian values by living and working together in an open and encouraging atmosphere.
- Develop low level skills in a number of outdoor activities as well as a basic understanding of the associated equipment and safety precautions.
- Experience achievement in a non-competitive ‘win-win’ environment.
The camp also gives the teacher and students the opportunity to get to know each other well.
NO PHONES ARE ALLOWED ON THESE OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMPS AT CHAVERIM.
The staff in charge will collect phones at the start of camp and return them just before 3.00 pm on day three. Alternatively, keep the phone at home for safe keeping.
I am sure the students will survive without their phones for 3 days and then they can focus on the outdoor education opportunities. If students need to call home for any reason the staff will let them use the phone at the Chaverim office.
The students will be transported to Chaverim by the College bus on the first day of camp. Students will need to be at school by 8.30 am the morning of the camp; they will return to the College at approximately 2.45 pm in time to catch the bus etc on the third day of camp.
Please find attached:
- Camp Program
- Equipment List - Clothes should be functional and suitable for outdoor and adventure activities and provide adequate protection from the elements. Camp is not a time to be fashion conscious; clothes need to be very practical. Students are also to be reminded that Chaverim is a Shalom College campus and all the usual College expectations apply. The wearing of unnecessary jewellery, make-up and inappropriate clothing is not permitted.
- Administration of Medication to Students form - if your child requires medication while on Camp please complete the form and hand it to your Teacher prior to departing on Camp.
Please login to Parent Lounge to give permission for your child to attend the Camp.
Once there click on the ‘Events and Payments’ tab and you will find a link to Year 8 Camp. Here you will be able to give permission for your child to attend, as well as view details about the camp. You will also be asked to review and verify that your child’s medical details are correct.
To check your child’s medical information is current, please click on the ‘student details’ tab and go to ‘medical details’. Please make sure that the following sections are completed so that your child can participate in all activities on camp.
- Can Swim 25m
- Tetanus Up-To-Date
- Medicare Number
In the ‘medical conditions’ section, click ‘add new’ and you will see a drop-down box and notes section where you can also note any dietary requirements, sleeping issues and other details that you feel may be relevant to your child’s well-being at the camp. Once you are happy with the information you have provided, please click ‘verify’.
Please also check your contact details and phone numbers are current, as we will be using this information to contact you if needed.
It is very important that all information in the Parent Lounge is current as teachers will use this information in case of an emergency and to support the wellbeing of your child.
If you require assistance with Parent Lounge login, please contact the office. If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me here at the College by phone or email.

TINA: THE DOG WHO CHANGED THE WORLD
“Hope taught me the meaning of life, Tina taught me the meaning of love.”
I recently came across a social media image of a man cradling a dying dog in a hammock and I was compelled to know more.
Author Niall Harbison had battled with addiction, so life had not always been easy for him, and when he came across a battered golden retriever at the end of a chain in Thailand – he know it was the start of something big.
Niall named the dog Tina, and she went on to inspire the creation of a dog hospital and a movement that helped abused dogs all over the world.
The movement behind Tina has never stopped, this book is her story, the movement is her legacy.
This beautiful book will be coming to the library soon.
