Last week I got a letter from a parent concerned about the bullying their child was receiving at Shalom. I hate hearing stories like that and, to the greatest degree possible, staff at Shalom will do their best to ensure that every young person coming to Shalom feels safe at school every day. In further discussions with this parent to try and identify where the issues were, she told me that her child reported some incidents to various classroom teachers and did not get the matters addressed well. I asked if the child reported the incidents to their Head of House. They did, once, and it would seem that the Head of House addressed that incident. The parent went on to tell me that their child ‘feared retribution’ if they reported bullying. She also told me that if the child reported every bullying incident, the child would be in the office every day. There are a couple of issues here that I want to remind every parent about –
1. Report bullying incidents to the Head of House – not to classroom teachers who can be dealing with three or four different classes in a day and not get around to responding as well as they’d like to every issue.
2. ‘Snitches Get Stitches’ is a motto widely circulated by bullies. They don’t want anyone reporting bad behaviour. I can’t say this never happens at Shalom but I can’t remember an incident when it did. If a student, or a parent, won’t report incidents, there is not much anyone can do to address the issues.
3. When a student is counselled on the first step of our anti-bullying process, it is reasonably gentle. If a student then repeats that action, we have a very different scenario. A Head of House, or one of the Student Welfare Team (Mr Brown, Mr Robinson or Ms Hilton), need to be informed ASAP.
I wish I could guarantee the behaviour of every one of our almost 1600 students, but I can’t. What I can guarantee is that if we are made aware of an issue, we will respond. If we don’t succeed in changing behaviour the first time, it is crucially important that someone informs us of that. Feeling safe and treating everyone respectfully, at all times, is a foundational principle of a good Catholic school.
Farewell & Welcome… at the end of this week, Mr David Eke will leave Shalom to take up a role with the Diocese. David has been an outstanding member of staff. Among other things, David led our Responsible Thinking Process. David was an excellent member of the Pastoral team and he will be greatly missed. David is to be replaced by Ms Kym Hilton, who joins us from Education Queensland. Kym is returning to the region after a significant stint in Mt Isa.
QISSN & QISSRL competitions always take place in the first week of the Semester holidays. This year, we are hosting the 25th QISSN Carnival which is very fitting given that Shalom hosted the first Carnival back in 2000. The QISSRL Carnival is to be hosted by The Cathedral College in Rockhampton. These young women and men have been training for months in preparation for these carnivals. The QISSN Carnival will be staged at both the Multiplex Complex and Shalom. If you are in Bundy or Rocky next week, you are welcome to attend either event and watch some wonderful school sport.
I will be on Leave in Term 3. Childless now (well, at least they are not at home anymore), Sheridan and I are heading overseas for a while. I’ll be back for the last week of Term 3 so that I can attend the Year 11 Retreat and I will make a guest appearance at the Shalom Formal. Ms Norris will step in as Acting Principal and Ms Freeman will step into the role of Acting Deputy Principal. I am so grateful to have such capable colleagues ready to step up to give me the opportunity to have a little time away from work.

Senior Academic Tutoring Program coordinated by Padea Tutoring
As previously advertised, we are trialling an exciting new opportunity available for students in Years 10 to 12 who are interested in receiving external tutoring. We have entered into an agreement with Padea Tutoring to facilitate an external tutoring service, run on location in the Waterford building to begin with, and then moving into the Coolock building when it is completed. The tutoring will be offered each Monday afternoon from 3:30pm to 6:30pm where students undertake 3 hours of tutoring, with a catered dinner provided.
The tutors are university students with an average ATAR of 99 and above. They will tutor students in a ratio of 1:5, and they will focus on the subjects identified by the student upon enrolment.
The cost will be $78 per student per session to be paid directly to Padea, and students will sign up for the duration of the term, 8 weeks in total. Tutoring will start in Week 2 of Term 3. There is the option to sign up for individual sessions, but this is at a slightly higher cost. Your first session is complementary. More information is provided in the email sent this afternoon.
Please note that this service will not replace the tutoring already offered by our Senior teachers, and you are welcome to continue to access our free school tutoring. This external service will be in addition to what we already offer.
Parents and students in Years 10 to 12 will have received an email this afternoon with the link to the website where you can enrol. There are limited places available so please act quickly if you wish to take up this opportunity.

Preferred Student Absentee Option
Parents are able to inform the College of student absentees via Parent Lounge, using the below pathway:
Parent Lounge> Student Details> Attendance> "+Add Absence Notification"
The Shalom College App has now been updated so when parents select "Absentee" it will re-direct to Parent Lounge for the absentee notification to be added.
For Parents that do not already have the College App please click below:
ALL student absentees should be notified to the office by 9am each day. If no notification has been received, an absentee text message will be sent out to parents to advise of the student's absence.
Parents and Carers of Year 11 & 12 Students
If your child has obtained their Provisional Licence and wishes to drive to and from school you are required to fill out a Permission to Drive Form and return it to Student Reception for approval by Mr Aaron Brown. Once approved the details will be placed on our School Register.
Thanks to those Parents who have already completed this form for their child.
At Shalom, we believe in recognising not only consistent dedication but also the growth students show in their approach to learning. The ROSA (Recognition of Student Application) program is designed to celebrate students’ motivation, persistence, and commitment to doing their best.
The ROSA Awards focus on personal growth and effort. Whether a student has maintained a high level of application or has made noticeable progress in their attitude and work habits, the ROSA Awards aim to acknowledge and encourage that individual journey. It’s one of the many ways we encourage and reward students for striving to reach their learning goals.
Coming up soon, teachers will be nominating up to two students from each middle school class for the Term One and Two ROSA Award. These students will be recognised at their House Assembly early in Term Three, and their names will be proudly published in the Shalom Newsletter.
We look forward to celebrating the achievements and growth of our students!

In Term 2 and 3 your son or daughter will be involved in an outdoor education camp, held at Chaverim. The camps will be in Core Studies classes, so the students will go out with their Core Studies teacher or in some instances, another teacher.
Camp Information
Students will participate in outdoor education activities as the camp is part of a three-year program. These Outdoor Education programs aim to provide an additional approach to the personal and spiritual development of your child and the greater Shalom community. This three-year program has specific objectives designed to provide.
- An atmosphere of cooperation between students, which can be applied at school, in the family and on the sports field. This may be characterized by cooperation, encouragement and concern for fellow students.
- Knowledge, skills and attitudes that contribute to a sense of responsibility, self-reliance, cooperation and harmony within oneself, with other people, and with the natural environment.
- Opportunities for participants to develop knowledge, low level skills and attitudes for participation in a number of outdoor pursuits.
- Knowledge, skills and attitudes towards a ‘minimum impact ethic’ consistent with the environment in which activities take place.
Each participant involved in the program will be given the opportunity to:
- “Look into the mirror” to see how their behaviours, both good and bad, impact their fellow participants.
- Participate in physically and mentally challenging activities while remaining safe on physical, mental and emotional levels.
- Experience and practice Christian values by living and working together in an open and encouraging atmosphere.
- Develop low level skills in a number of outdoor activities as well as a basic understanding of the associated equipment and safety precautions.
- Experience achievement in a non-competitive ‘win-win’ environment.
The camp also gives the teacher and students the opportunity to get to know each other well.
NO PHONES ARE ALLOWED ON THESE OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMPS AT CHAVERIM.
The staff in charge will collect phones at the start of camp and return them just before 3.00 pm on day three. Alternatively, keep the phone at home for safe keeping.
I am sure the students will survive without their phones for 3 days and then they can focus on the outdoor education opportunities. If students need to call home for any reason the staff will let them use the phone at the Chaverim office.
The students will be transported to Chaverim by the College bus on the first day of camp. Students will need to be at school by 8.30 am the morning of the camp; they will return to the College at approximately 2.45 pm in time to catch the bus etc on the third day of camp.
Please find attached:
- Camp Program
- Equipment List - Clothes should be functional and suitable for outdoor and adventure activities and provide adequate protection from the elements. Camp is not a time to be fashion conscious; clothes need to be very practical. Students are also to be reminded that Chaverim is a Shalom College campus and all the usual College expectations apply. The wearing of unnecessary jewellery, make-up and inappropriate clothing is not permitted.
- Administration of Medication to Students form - if your child requires medication while on Camp please complete the form and hand it to your Teacher prior to departing on Camp.
Please login to Parent Lounge to give permission for your child to attend the Camp.
Once there click on the ‘Events and Payments’ tab and you will find a link to Year 8 Camp. Here you will be able to give permission for your child to attend, as well as view details about the camp. You will also be asked to review and verify that your child’s medical details are correct.
To check your child’s medical information is current, please click on the ‘student details’ tab and go to ‘medical details’. Please make sure that the following sections are completed so that your child can participate in all activities on camp.
- Can Swim 25m
- Tetanus Up-To-Date
- Medicare Number
In the ‘medical conditions’ section, click ‘add new’ and you will see a drop-down box and notes section where you can also note any dietary requirements, sleeping issues and other details that you feel may be relevant to your child’s well-being at the camp. Once you are happy with the information you have provided, please click ‘verify’.
Please also check your contact details and phone numbers are current, as we will be using this information to contact you if needed.
It is very important that all information in the Parent Lounge is current as teachers will use this information in case of an emergency and to support the wellbeing of your child.
If you require assistance with Parent Lounge login, please contact the office. If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me here at the College by phone or email.

CQUniversity Business Challenge 2025
The annual CQUniversity Business Challenge brought together 36 teams of students from more than 30 high schools across regional Queensland. Teams were tested on their concept knowledge, teamwork and innovation in the areas of Business, Economics, Accounting and Legal Studies.
Shalom was represented by two Year 12 teams in the first round on 7 May. Team 1 included Molly B, Tyler K, Chris S, and Ava P, finishing 4th in the Wide Bay region. Our second team - Chloe G, Mitchell E, Jonah S, and George H - tied for 1st place with Bundaberg North State High School and advanced to the Grand Finals on the 18 June, where they secured an impressive 2nd place overall just behind the Townsville team.
The Grand Final challenge was a case study on the mining company Rio Tinto, and students had to create a 10-15 minute video, focusing on one of Rio Tinto's main objectives. With a strict (and short) deadline, and giving up lunch times and after school, Team 2 arranged a professional presentation that was well researched and showcased their outstanding business skills.
As a result of their placing in the first round and their exceptional performance in the Grand Final, each member of Shalom Team 2 was awarded a scholarship of $1500, and our College earned $1000 in prizemoney.
We are incredibly proud of the achievements of the students in our Business, Legal Studies and Accounting classes and the way they represented Shalom College. Congratulations.
