Principal's Reflection
'Called to not lord it over but to serve…'
During his visit to the United States of America last year, Pope Francis was asked by a journalist how he feels being treated like a celebrity and what this means to the Catholic Church. The Holy Father's response was: "Do you know what title the Popes used to use, and should still use? Servant of the servants of God. That is a little different than being a celebrity, a 'star'. Stars are beautiful to gaze at. I like to gaze at them in the summer, when the sky is clear. But the Pope must be, has to be, the servant of the servants of God. In the media this sort of thing happens. But there is another side to the story. How many stars have we seen shine, then go out and fall. It is something fleeting. Whereas being the servant of the servants of God, that is something beautiful. It doesn't pass away. That is what I think".
From the response of the Holy Father, it was obvious that Pope Francis saw the moment of the interview with this journalist as an opportunity to teach and catechise not just the journalist but all who may ever read his response to this journalist. Right from the first day he was elected to the papacy, Pope Francis has been seen by Catholics and non-Catholics alike, as a true servant-leader. As the Vicar of Christ, Pope Francis understands that he has not come to be served but to serve.
From his first homily Pope Francis has insisted "authentic power is service"…. (America magazine, June 17, 2013.)
Our Year 12 students commenced a very important year today, a year in which they have been called to serve their community; to undertake servant leadership just as the Pope has been called to serve. They have been assigned a Year 7 buddy, a young person whom they shall 'look after' for the year; they are asked to take an active role in their Pastoral Care classes and build authentic relationships with all students in that class, remembering that they are part of their House community. They will undertake projects or activities organised on a whole school basis. And of course there will be a myriad of ways they will be able to serve others in our community. These young men and women in Year 12 aspire to make a difference in our community, to acknowledge the traditions gone before them and to add to that.
I am certain that they will make this College a better place for having been a part of the community.
On 26 February we will formally welcome our Year 12 students to their year of servant leadership at the Opening College Liturgy and Year 12 Induction where they pledge their service to this community.
I look forward to working with these young people in 2016.
New Staff Welcome
We warmly welcome the following staff to Shalom: Miss Jessica Altadonna, Mr Steve McKay, Mrs Jade Van Krimpen and Miss Rebecca Cavallaro. Mrs Trish Ingalls continues with us in a full-time capacity and Ms Henrika Ambrutyte is with us for the year along with Ms Maya Pundoor. We also welcome Mrs Amanda Sharpe back from maternity leave. We keep Mrs Rhonda Challen in our thoughts and prayers as she is unwell; Mrs Helena Chandler is taking her classes.
The new auxiliary staff are: Miss Leith Argent (Chaverim), Mr Dominic Tuzes (Hospitality) Mr Tom Houghton (IT Department) and the following staff are attached to the Learning Enhancement Unit: Miss Taleigha Batt, Miss Michelle Hair, Miss Kelsey Henricksen, Mr Antonio Kaufusi, Mr Lewis McLure and Miss Bronte Nash.
We also welcomed quite a number of students in Years 8 to 11 on Wednesday.
School Fees
I am very grateful to all of those families who ensure that their school fees are paid on time. Shalom depends on the financial contribution of parents. I am very conscious that getting your daughters and sons back to school, in uniform and fully equipped for the year is an expensive business. As a Catholic school, Shalom makes every effort to ensure that fee increases are kept to a minimum and that Shalom is accessible to all. It was interesting to read the article in The Courier Mail on 27 January that outlined the range of fees in the State in non-government schools. The data presented in that article certainly highlighted that the fees at Shalom are certainly much lower than most. The article quoted the Director of Independent Schools Queensland as saying that the median cost for non-government schools in 2014 was $5658. Shalom's fee, which is all-inclusive, is still below that figure in 2016. Please always know that the College will do all that it is able to assist families in financial difficulty to access a Catholic education at Shalom.
Personal Development Education
Our school has recently subscribed to the Enhanced Learning Educational Services Study Skills Handbook as we are implementing a formal Personal Development Education program across the school. This is a great online resource for parents and students to address all their study skills issues and concerns as well as learn new ways to improve students' results at school. The handbook has a huge amount of information for students and parents as well as lots of interactive activities, multimedia experiences and useful resources. To access the handbook, go to www.studyskillshandbook.com.au and login as a subscriber with these details:
User name: shalomcollege

Please note, the above user name and password is for the use of the parents and students AT OUR SCHOOL ONLY – please do not pass our school's details onto parents or students from other schools or other individuals as this is a prosecutable breach of copyright and will result in frequent password changes for our school.
We encourage all parents and students to take advantage of this opportunity to further develop their study skills through this great online resource.
Internet Safety Training
Last year we had Brett Lee (not the fast bowler!) speak to the staff here at the College; some of you may have attended his parent workshop. Brett has developed an online course committed to the well-being of all children in the physical world and in the cyber environment. He has developed valuable online training courses aimed to educate, empower and support parents and carers to protect children from the increasing risks online. This is the link:

For our secondary parents you can choose from either lower secondary or upper secondary. He covers topics such as Communication, Rules and Boundaries, Independence and Empowered Choice and Action.
I encourage all parents to look at these excellent resources.

Student Welfare
We welcomed the Year 7 students to our College on Wednesday. They attended high school for the first time, along with their Year 12 buddies. The House Coordinators and the Pastoral Care teachers did a magnificent job in preparing these newest members of our community for what lies ahead. I hope they enjoyed the day. Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, your child will have completed their IT Bootcamp and also had a session with Mrs Miller-Smith and myself regarding cybersafety and cyberbullying.
Quite a number of students across Years 8 to 11 also joined our Shalom community.
YEAR 12 Student Drivers
If your son or daughter is to drive to the College they need to collect a 'Permission to Drive' form from the student office. The form needs to be signed by both the parent and the student. The form is simply an agreement which states the guidelines:
- where students are permitted to park
- the requirement to follow direction from the school staff regarding the car
- the speed limit in the driveway
- that they cannot leave the school during school hours without the appropriate permission
- they must hand in their keys
If the procedures are not followed the privilege of parking at the College may be removed.
Please note: The school takes no responsibility for the safety of the driver or any passengers of the vehicle.
Collecting students from the College
Parents - we do ask that you not use the staff car park adjacent to the Learning Enhancement Unit /Sports Centre or the staff car park beside the tennis courts to collect your child.
The students MUST wait in the designated area adjacent to the Administration building.
Congratulations to the following students who were awarded Bundaberg Region's Australia Day Spirit Awards
Junior Sporting Spirit: Indiana Anderson
Junior Creative Spirit: 2015 male College Captain – Liam Pratt.
I do hope everyone has had a smooth start the school year.

Emails from Shalom
We are aware of some parents with Microsoft email addresses(@outlook.com, @hotmail.com & @live.com) are not receiving our emails. We are still investigating the cause and it's not an easy one as some parents with Microsoft accounts are receiving emails from Shalom. Could all parents that are having issues, log into the website of your email provider and confirm you can get to your inbox. We have found that some parents with issues have not answered security questions, etc from Microsoft and this only shows via their website.

LOTE News
Firstly welcome to the Year 7s and welcome back to the other students of Japanese in Year 8 through to Year 12. 2016 is year of the Monkey or ç¿ and the picture that is attached is of a Happy News card wishing a very Happy New Year.
This will be an exciting period, with many of the Year 7 students learning Japanese for the first time. You will be learning interesting things about different cultures and an entirely new alphabet and a new way of looking at the world.
Learning Japanese will also help your academic achievement in other subjects. By learning a new language, you will learn more about English, which will help strengthen your literacy skills and organisation. You will also learn to use parts of your brain that would otherwise be under-utilised.
Students have been shown a list of free Japanese learning Apps for their iPads, make sure you check and ask your student to teach you some of their new language. For all enquires please email myself Mrs Simon Wilson simone_wilson@shalomcollege.com or Mrs Fiona Bath bathf@shalomcollege.com who is teaching Year 8 Japanese this year.
