Principal's Reflection

The ancient Greek philosopher, Plato, is attributed to have delivered a comment which is timeless in its relevance to schooling. He said, "The direction in which education starts a man will determine his future in life". The language of the quote in the 21st Century requires adjustment to include both men and women, but the sentiment is as relevant today as it was in the 5th century BC. What we as an institution of learning provide for our young people will have an impact which will be felt by them for all time. This is our challenge and as with all challenges, our great responsibility.

At Shalom in 2016 this challenge falls into several areas. Our responsibility to present a curriculum which is challenging and dynamic. Our need to deliver a level of pastoral care that recognises that not all people are the same. There are those who navigate the waters of school with great aplomb and leave with memories which will compare with their best ever days. But there are those who will struggle because they are different. They see things differently. As a Catholic staff in a Catholic school, we are guided by the values of the Gospel where Jesus told us of a world of justice, where all were included from the lepers to the sinners, into the one community. The community of God.

And so it is that we commence this challenge yet again at the outset of another year. In acknowledging our responsibility to present a vibrant curriculum, the staff undertook a particularly important PD. Eric Frangenheim worked with staff on curriculum design, guiding us through ways to challenge students, by acknowledging the different levels at which the mind operates.

In a pastoral context, I indicated in last week's newsletter that we have undertaken a Personal Development Education program across the College - Years 7 to 12. Parents have access to this so I hope you have had a chance to look at the program the school has purchased. The first class is this Thursday.

Congratulations

Liliana McLennan Year 8 Hogan won a gold medal in the 2000 metre Pursuit at the Queensland State Trials in January. Liliana broke a state record in qualifying for the 2000m Pursuit. This record had been set in 2008.

  • Please contact Mr Gills if full payment is not able to be finalised by the due date

2016 Year 12 Induction

Mission

Wednesday Chapel Mass and Ash Wednesday 10 February

This Wednesday is Ash Wednesday. We will begin the day with our first 8:00am Mass for 2016 in the Loyola Chapel. This Mass will be led by Father Hogan who will carry out a special blessing of the ashes. Our House Leaders and College Captains will then collect the ashes and take them back to their Houses to distribute during the Ash Wednesday Liturgies which will begin at 11:35am.

At our assemblies we've been breaking open the idea of the 'Year of Mercy' using the Corporal Acts of Mercy as a vehicle to help students understand. The students have been challenged to try and capture 'Lenten Moments' to hang on the Purple Lenten Tree or email images of ways they have witnessed our Shalom community engaging in mercy. The purpose of this activity is not to note 'who' is carrying out these activities but 'how'. This will hopefully help our students connect community service and everyday actions back to the Gospel of Matthew and the Corporal Acts of Mercy.

Look out for details of our Lenten program and feel free to come and join us as part of your own Lenten journey. Another idea you may like to engage in is downloading a Lenten Calendar for your smart phone, or use the web version and set it as your homepage. The calendar can be used to deepen your spirituality this Lent and learn about Caritas Australia's work in six countries across the globe. It enables you to explore Project Compassion, meet inspiring people and reflect on the Lenten period through daily readings, prayers and social justice actions.

A children's version is available online also. Please clink on the link for more information.

This year the Humanities Department has introduced a new non-OP subject in Year 11. Even for students transitioning into university, this subject provides essential skills for assisting students to become active members of their communities. Units in the course include money management, the World of Work, Australia's Society, the Arts and the Community and Gender and Identity. In 2016 the competition will be offered at two separate levels:

  • A Year 9 and 10 competition broadly based on the Australian Curriculum: History for Years 9 and 10.
  • A Year 7 and 8 competition broadly based on the Australian Curriculum: History for Years 7 and 8.

Each competition will present 50 multiple choice questions.

Both competitions will run under test conditions for 45 minutes on Wednesday 25 May 2016.

ICAS Science Competition: Tuesday 31 May

Students are assessed against other students in the same school year, state and country. Can You Help?

Brother Rochford wants to be able to purchase some blank VHS video cassettes. Are you able to help point him in the right direction of where he can get them?

Please email kylie_collins@shalomcollege.com if you can help.

Quiet Achiever

I sent out an email to the staff asking if anyone could nominate a Quiet Achiever. A great response!

Brother Rochford

This week I nominate Chelsea Collins Year 12 Lingiari and Capri Ingall Year 12 Chisholm as Quiet Achievers. Both students came in a week early from holidays to childmind staff children. This allowed staff to attend Staff Development and Training. They were sensational and did a great job.

Mr Robin Wust
Assistant Principal

The student I have nominated is Emily Grey Year 12 Lingiari. Emily just returned from Japan on the Exchange Program that I have set up. She has now decided to become a teacher.

Mrs Simone Wilson
LOTE Coordinator

The two students I have nominated are Year 11 students from my PC class, Mark Khair Year 11and Luke Beck. They both gave up a day out of their holidays to come in and take a buddy for the orientation day. I only have one Year 12 student this year in my PC so they stood up and volunteered to take three Year 7s between them.

Mr Mike Reid
Teacher

Three students, Timothy Harris, Ayla Duffy and Sophie Whitelum, were accepted into the National Youth Science Forum and sponsored by Rotary Clubs in Bundaberg. They spent a week of their holidays in Canberra listening to guest speakers, attending Science forums and experiencing quite a number of different areas associated with the science field. This program will further enhance their desire to study and move into an area of science when they complete school.

Mr Chris Roelofs
Walsh House Coordinator

This week I nominate Matthew Otto Year 8 Hogan. He has achieved fantastic results with sprinting. He is going to the Queensland Titles and is on target to break 11 seconds for 100 metres.

Mrs Anne Braund

Information Technology

Emails from Shalom

We are still troubleshooting the email issue that has been happening for Microsoft (@live, @hotmail & @outlook) email users. Please make sure you check your junk mail as some parents have confirmed our emails have gone to junk mail.

College Own Laptops

We have issued all college laptops now to students from year 10 – 12. We have rolled out the software "CyberDuck" to these laptops recently which allow students to access their H drive and other network resources from home. Students will need to access a guide on our servicedesk to setup this software.

Location: Log into Intranet > Click and log into Servicedesk > Click on solutions tab > download and open guide for Cyberduck.

Most of these laptops have all college software installed that they require for their education here at Shalom. This is part of the information gathering from Curriculum Heads of Departments at the end of each year. If Students require additional software installed that is not present on the laptops, they will need to come to the IT Unit so we can assist.

What a great start to 2016 we have had in the Business Department at Shalom College. Firstly we would like to welcome all the Year 7 and 8 students, who for the first time at the College, get to study 'Business Education' as part of our junior school curriculum. Students will undertake a term of study in this area using the new Australian Curriculum material.

Secondly we are excited to have our very first group of Year 11 students enrol in the BSB 30115 Certificate III – Business course, in partnership with our RTO provider Binnacle. We look forward to these students assisting with some of the school community projects undertaken at Shalom, as they complete their competency based training.

Finally the Business Department would like to congratulate Ryan Paul who was a business student at Shalom in 2015. Ryan received one of the Auswide Bank Scholarships of $5000 that was offered to local Bundaberg students who intended on staying local for their University education in 2016. Ryan will study an undergraduate Business degree at CQU Bundaberg Campus this year. Congratulations Ryan.
