Principal’s Reflection
Just six years ago, at the age of 16, Jessica Watson became the youngest person to sail solo nonstop around the world.
Even though this voyage made headlines in 2010, a great deal of planning and preparation took place long before that. As Jessica said, “It didn’t just happen overnight.” She had to prove herself to her parents; prove that she was more than capable.
Going on this trip also meant making sacrifices - it meant sacrificing some of the things other teenagers take for granted.
Bridget Chadwick, reporter, asked Jessica many questions about her voyage. She said they discussed the issue of age discrimination because Jessica’s age became more of an issue than the actual voyage. Jessica said that part of her motivation was to make adults see that young people can do incredible things and that they are so smart and capable.
Bridget asked Jessica if the voyage had changed her in any way. She replied that it was hard to know. However, she did state that the voyage taught her some valuable lessons.
“I’ve learnt plenty of things: the value of hard work and where that can get you; I’ve learnt not to take life so seriously, to remember to have fun along the way and enjoy the things you’ve worked hard for.”
One piece of advice Jessica gives to young people is to work hard to prove that they are capable of following their dreams.
(Chadwick, B, 2015 www.australiancatholics.com.au )
There are several valuable points our students can take from this young lady.
As the senior class commences their most important year, they must remember that results won’t just happen; they need to work hard; they are more than capable of achieving their goals. It is important that they are supported by parents and teachers.
Condolences
We offer our deepest sympathy to Adam Knott and his family on the death of his sister, Melanie.
Personal Development Education
This information has been in an earlier newsletter but thought it worth putting in again. Please have a look at what the students will be doing.
Our school has recently subscribed to the Enhanced Learning Educational Services Study Skills Handbook as we are implementing a formal Personal Development Education program across the school. This is a great online resource for parents and students to address all their study skills issues and concerns as well as learn new ways to improve students’ results at school. The handbook has a huge amount of information for students and parents as well as lots of interactive activities, multimedia experiences and useful resources. To access the handbook, go to www.studyskillshandbook.com.au and login as a subscriber with these details:
User name: shalomcollege
Password: 18results
Please note, the above user name and password is for the use of the parents and students AT OUR SCHOOL ONLY - please do not pass our school’s details onto parents or students from other schools or other individuals as this is a prosecutable breach of copyright and will result in frequent password changes for our school.
We encourage all parents and students to take advantage of this opportunity to further develop their study skills through this great on line resource.
Swimming Carnival: Inter-House Competition
This is a compulsory activity and is based on participation rather than great ability. The Championship Swimming carnival was held on Thursday for those who are good swimmers.
Opening College Liturgy and Induction of Year 12
This important event takes place on Friday 26 February. An invitation can be found in this newsletter.

Students need to remember that they are to be sun-safe at all times – they must have t-shirts with sleeves and preferably collars. They are to have longer shorts – particularly the girls as they will be using harnesses for some of the activities. Each student needs to have their own sunscreen as well. A raincoat is a must because even if it is raining the activities will still go ahead; obviously they won’t if the instructors feel it is unsafe.
Year 12
The Year 12 cohort has made an impressive start in their leadership roles. We had five past students speak to Years 11 and 12 last Monday. They spoke to the students about what it was like ‘being a senior student’ with the focus very much on the academic side. The former students emphasised the need to commence assignment work immediately, not putting it off; having a work/school/sport balance; using their class time and the QCS preparation time wisely. When asked for one message they could leave the students with, these were the hints:
- Hand in drafts and seek assistance
- Get very serious about the QCS preparation lessons
On Friday the Year 12 students undertook two of the QCS tests.
The Year 12 students also undertake projects and these were launched to the group yesterday by the Leaders. First up is the Inter-House Bombardment competition. This competition is always well patronised and great fun with all year levels participating. This is run by the senior students.
Safety Issues When Collecting Students Each Afternoon
It has been brought to my attention that parents are parking in the grounds of the Baptist Church to collect their child. Can I ask that you NOT park on private property.
It has also been noted that parents are driving into the cemetery in order to collect their children from there. We ask you do not use this area.
Please do not park over in the car park nearest the tennis courts or alongside that area on the grassed field. I do not want our students crossing the main drive with the volume of traffic we have each afternoon.
For the safety of all our students I ask that you use the designated pick up and drop off zone nearest the (new) Administration Block.
For the sake of a few extra minutes we could potentially have a serious accident involving one of our students if these other areas are used.
I thank you for your cooperation in this matter.
All Students
The standard of grooming thus far has been very good overall, however, there are a couple of issues I wish to bring to your attention:
- All students need to polish their shoes regularly
- Boys need to maintain their hair style/cut so that it is in keeping with College policy - short and conservative in style; not the contrasts in long on top with very short sides
- Girls skirts need to be below the knee – please see page 10 in the student Record Book
Please contact me at the College if you have any queries.

Photo Day for School IDs – Year 7 and all new students
The scheduled photo session on Friday 19 February is for Year 7 and all the new students to Shalom (any year level). The photos from this session will be used for Student ID cards, therefore no order forms or payments are required. The opportunity to purchase School photos will be available at our upcoming School photo day on Thursday 18 August.
All male students are to wear the Shalom school tie for the photos.
Quiet Achiever
This week I nominate Timothy Harris, Year 12 Lingiari for Quiet Achiever.
Tim has not long returned from the National Youth Science Forum that was held at the Australian National University in Canberra. He attended this forum with 400 other students from across the nation. He is also starting a University maths course through the University of Queensland as he completed his senior Maths last year. He is also a very capable Chess player and was awarded the title of Top Board 1 Player for Regional Queensland. Not restricting himself to all things Maths and Science Tim is preparing to participate in the Lions Youth of the Year and the Rotary Quiz. To add to all of this Tim, has also been a very helpful Buddy to Harrison in Year 7 and been a keen and active member of Lingiari House.

Information Technology
iPads - Year 7 to Year 9
By now, we are hoping all new students have their iPads setup and required apps are installed. We have had some curly issues of recent times and are working with students on troubleshooting these issues. If there is a student iPad that has issues, please don’t hesitate to seek assistance from the IT Unit.
Shalom Laptops – Year 10 to Year 12
This week has been very busy for students with Shalom Leased Laptops. Students have been requested to set up Microsoft Outlook 2016 on their laptops for their school email account so they can receive communication. We have also been installing some additional software this week (Adobe Reader DC and Cyberduck), which students have been notified of via email. We have also (hopefully) resolved the issue of students installing school printers which should also assist at home.
We have had some requests for additional software that is not required for our curriculum. Because these laptops are owned by Shalom, we need to abide by copyright rules and therefore deny the installation of software that can be used to download illegal movies, music and software. I’m sure you can understand being a school, we certainly have the potential to be audited but we also need to set an example to our students on good digital citizenship.
BYO Notebooks – Year 10 to Year 12
I’m hoping our BYO notebook users are all connected to our wireless here at Shalom. Could you please make sure you have Cyberduck installed so you can access your school work from home. You can certainly Google this application and install it from the website. To set up Cyberduck, instructions are located in our Solutions within Service Desk. Service Desk can be found by logging into the intranet.
As usual, we are here to help with the IT needs and certainly don’t hesitate to contact us.
Apple Recall on charges
There has been a recall of Apple chargers due to a fault. This will impact chargers for iPhones, iPads and MacBooks from over the last 10 years. Could you please check the tip of the charger as per the Apple URL below and if your charger is affected, you will need to contact the closest Apple Authorised Repair Centre for replacements.
http://www.apple.com/au/support/ac-wallplug-adapter/
Our suggested Apple Authorised Repair Centre in Bundaberg is BTS (Bundaberg Technology Solutions), opposite the new Talon Bridge.

Open Girls Volleyball
The Shalom 1 Open Girls Volleyball team had a straight forward 2 sets to nil win over Kepnock 1. Strong serving from Sarah May and Bella Santalucia enabled Shalom to race ahead in each set. While still learning their specialist positions on the court, the girls are keen for their next volleyball challenge. Well done team!

KSHS - 30 all out. Rathbone 2/3 and Gray 2/7. Shalom - 32 for 2 in 4.2 overs. Shoobridge 17*
Shalom won by 8 wickets with 10.4 overs to spare.
Student Achievement
Congratulations to Liliana McLennan (cycling) on some fantastic results over the school holidays. In Tasmania, she competed in the National Junior Track Series where she finished with two 3rd placings, two 5th placings and a 6th placing. She also competed in the Tasmanian Christmas Carnival where she had a fantastic meet, winning (or placing) in more races than any other competitor.
She then went on to compete at the Qld State Titles in January where she won a Gold Medal in the 2000m Individual Pursuit, breaking an 8 year old record. Lily also won two Silvers and a Bronze during the State Titles. She has been selected as part of the Qld Junior State Team that will compete next week at the National Championships in Tasmania.
Congratulations also to Benjamin Wright, who has been selected in the North Queensland U18 Mens Basketball Team. He will head to Adelaide in April to contest the Australian Nationals. On top of this achievement, Ben has been asked to be a part of the National Performance Program at the QAS in Brisbane. He will work with Basketball Australia’s National Talent ID Manager, Brad Davidson and be part of training and classroom sessions. This is a just reward for all of the hours of hard work on and off the court. Well done!!!

Engineers Without Borders Workshop
On Monday 8 February, Year 10 Science B students were involved in a workshop conducted by Engineers Without Borders (EWB). EWB is an organisation aimed at promoting ‘humanitarian engineering’ – assisting developing countries address the lack of fundamental human needs (eg clean water).
Four current Engineering students from UQ and QUT presented a workshop on ‘Prosthetic Leg Construction’. This workshop promoted the healthcare and medical side of engineering, forcing students to think laterally and innovatively about creating a prosthetic leg from simple and limited resources. The task certainly tested students’ creative ability and their construction skills given short time and resources. They worked diligently in groups and had a lot of fun along the way.
Thanks go to EWB and their sponsors for providing this opportunity for our students at no cost to the College.

Humanities Information
New Subject: Social and Communities Studies
This year the Humanities Department has introduced a new non-OP subject in Year 11. This general vocational course prepares students for life in the changing workforce but also prepares students for an active involvement in the community through volunteer work. Even for students transitioning into university, this subject provides essential skills for assisting students to become active members of their communities. Units in the course include money management, the World of Work, Australia’s Society, the Arts and the Community and Gender and Identity. Email the Humanities Coordinator if more information is required about this subject.
Tutoring/Assignment Support/Competition Support
This year extra afternoon support for Humanities students (History , Geography, Tourism, Social and Community Studies) will be held on Thursday afternoon in Goondeel Library. All year levels may attend. Email Mrs Bolam for further details bolamd@shalomcollege.com
Competitions
Once again this year, the department will organise a series of competitions for students. Anyone may enter.
a) The Australian History Competition is prepared by the History Teachers’ Association of Australia. While a primary goal is to provide an interesting and challenging competition for students, it is also a quality resource that assesses the skills and understandings required by the Australian Curriculum.
In 2016 the competition will be offered at two separate levels:
- A Year 9 and 10 competition broadly based on the Australian Curriculum: History for Years 9 and 10.
- A Year 7 and 8 competition broadly based on the Australian Curriculum: History for Years 7 and 8.
Each competition will present 50 multiple choice questions.
Both competitions will run under test conditions for 45 minutes on Wednesday 25 May 2016.
Cost - $6.00. Any student in Years 7 to 10 who wishes to sit for this competition should email Mrs Bolam to receive a registration form and pay $6.00 to the Finance Office.
Entries Close: Thursday 24 March.
National History Challenge
All year levels have the opportunity to enter this competition based on the theme ‘Triumph or Tragedy’. Our school has successfully entered students over the last few years. More detailed information can be found at http://historychallenge.org.au/ Email Mrs Bolam if you are interested in further information.
Australian Geography Competition
The competition is made up of multiple-choice questions testing geographical knowledge and skills. Any student can enter this competition. Students are graded at high school year levels - Year 7 and younger, Year 8, Year 9, Year 10, Year 11 and Year 12. Entry deadline is 24 March with $4.00 entry fee. See/email Mrs Bolam for further details. More detailed information can be found:
