Principal's Reflection
Last Wednesday was Bishop's Inservice Day where the staff at our College had the opportunity to spend a day of spiritual reflection, with guest presenters: the theme was Mercy. The objectives of the day are to keep alive the Catholic ethos of our schools; to keep a strong connection between the staff in schools with Bishop Michael McCarthy, the Diocesan Director, Miss Leesa Jeffcoat and Diocesan staff. It is a chance to deepen our understanding and faith and, as an aside, is a wonderful networking tool.
We were joined by Father John Daly, Father Terry Stallard, Father Andrew Hogan, Sister Mary Stallard, Brother Rochford, teachers and staff from other primary schools. The 8:00am Mass in the Loyola Centre chapel was well attended and a lovely way to start the day.
At the beginning of 2015 Pope Francis announced an 'Extraordinary Jubilee Year' that would focus on the mercy of God. This 'Holy Year of Mercy' looks to engage the faithful with the words of Luke's Gospel, in which Jesus challenges each one of us to 'be merciful, even as God is merciful' (cf Luke 6:36).
According to Pope Francis, each person has a unique role to play in the Church of today, "a place of mercy freely given, where everyone can feel welcomed, loved, forgiven and encouraged to live the good life of the Gospel."(Pope Francis, Evangelli Gaudium).

Students need to remember that they are to be sun-safe at all times – they must have t-shirts with sleeves and preferably collars. They are to have longer shorts – particularly the girls as they will be using harnesses for some of the activities. Each student needs to have their own sunscreen as well. A raincoat is a must because even if it is raining the activities will still go ahead; obviously they won't if the instructors feel it is unsafe.

Ten Pin Bowling Week 1
Nineteen senior students (Years 10 to 12) gathered at Bundy Bowl on Wednesday 10 February, making a total of six teams. A couple of standouts for week one were Josh Haack with 157, the highest (unhandicapped) game score for Shalom students on the day, followed closely by Connor Dingle with 146. Well done boys. All players gave their best and a lot of fun was had by all. One team in particular displayed great exuberance - Shalom 6 or the "Shalom Strikers" as they prefer to be called: Josh Haack, Cody Breuer and Samuel McMah.
Ten Pin Bowling Week 2
Shalom teams are bowling well and having lots of fun. All players are keen and full of enthusiasm. The stand out player for this week was Connor Dingle with a score of 200 for one of his games.
The Shalom Teams are as follows:
Shalom 1: Connor Dingle, Amber Craven-Hughes, Chelsea
Collins, Capri Ingall
Shalom 2: Cooper Peebles, Lachlan Peebles, Michael Lemura
Shalom 3: Eleisha Wilson, Monique Van Kooten, Elizabeth Kelly
Shalom 4: Andrew Caelli, Natalie Byrne, Aidan Greer
Shalom 5: Shay Black, Jaimee Fazen, Angela Johnstone
Shalom 6: (aka the Shalom Strikers) Josh Haack, Cody Breuer, Samuel

Vollyball – Week 2
The Shalom 1 open girls volleyball team had a cliff-hanger match against Bundaberg High 2, going down 2 sets to 1.
After trailing 12-20 in the first set, the girls continually won consecutive rallies and with Georgia Snare's accurate serving, they were able to steal the set, 25-20!
The second and third sets were evenly matched, with both teams showing increasingly more confident volleyball skills. Despite the loss of these final two thrilling sets and the match, the Shalom girls' enthusiasm was the real winner. Fantastic team effort Shalom!

Competitions
Once again this year, the department will organise a series of competitions for students. Anyone may enter.
a) The Australian History Competition is prepared by the History Teachers' Association of Australia. While a primary goal is to provide an interesting and challenging competition for students, it is also a quality resource that assesses the skills and understandings required by the Australian Curriculum.
In 2016 the competition will be offered at two separate levels:
- A Year 9 and 10 competition broadly based on the Australian Curriculum: History for Years 9 and 10.
- A Year 7 and 8 competition broadly based on the Australian Curriculum: History for Years 7 and 8.
Each competition will present 50 multiple choice questions.
Both competitions will run under test conditions for 45 minutes on Wednesday 25 May 2016.
Cost - $6.00. Any student in Years 7 to 10 who wishes to sit for this competition should email Mrs Bolam to receive a registration form and pay $6.00 to the Finance Office.
Entries Close: Thursday 24 March.
National History Challenge

Science and Mathematics Competitions for 2016
This year Shalom College students have the opportunity to participate in the following national and international competitions:
ICAS Science Competition: Tuesday 31 May
Australian Mathematics Competition: Thursday 28 July
Students are assessed against other students in the same school year, state and country. The competitions are designed to be a fun event, removed from the pressures of formal assessment with problems and questions designed to stimulate the interest of students. All students receive a certificate showing their level of achievement and a detailed report outlining their performance.
If your student would like to participate in either the ICAS Science Competition or the Australian Mathematics competition parents need to complete the appropriate nomination form attached and make the required payment to the Accounts Office by Friday 22 April.
