Principal's Reflection
The theme of the Opening Liturgy and the Induction of the senior leaders for 2016 was that of mercy. It was very appropriate as mercy is one of the central components of Pope Francis's ministry. To be merciful has both an implication and a relevance to all people. Our challenge in this community is to find ways for Shalom College to show mercy.
On Friday we came together as a community and prayed that God would assist us to open the door of mercy. What we will see when we do this are people who need our support or love and our compassion.
As a school, like our wider society, we set social norms. We default to a conditioning which can oversimplify our interactions with people. That is, we classify people as acceptable if they conform easily to our way of doing things or we outcast them because they don't. But not everyone does conform to our norms. What do we do with those who don't? Place them outside the city limits like the lepers in the gospel? If we have done this, then it's time to respond as Jesus did. It was he who opened the door and stepped across the boundary line to break bread with the lepers, the tax collectors or anyone else who had lost their way.
Our leaders pledged to do this. However this is not a journey they will be able to take by themselves. It is physically too hard for one group. The quest for mercy is one that we must all undertake together. In 2016 we must not only support the vulnerable and the unfortunate but each other. This will require great courage. When we open a door there can often be a fear of what lies on the other side. Do we walk out into a beautiful sunlit day with fresh flowers and beautiful green grass? Or are we greeted with a dull overcast sky where nothing will grow and everything has died? If we are, we can always close the door and go back inside. Or we can step outside and look to bring about new growth and new life. This city has a recent and powerful history in doing this.
When we step through the door we take the community with us. We take the newly inducted student leaders and the remainder of the Year 12 senior year. We take the students from Years 7 to 11, regardless of their gender, race or capacity to adapt to our social norm. We take the staff and the parents. We take the wider Shalom establishment.
With this in mind, I asked the following questions of our seniors, not just the student leaders, but all of Year 12:
- What can you do as we step through the door?
- What will you do to make a difference?
- How can you be the ones who will plant the seed from which growth, success and prosperity will sprout?
I told them that if they could answer these questions and put their answers into actions then we could not fail. The seniors more than anyone have the opportunity to carry us on their backs to oversee the planting. Through their actions and words, if they choose to live and practice the values of the gospel, not only will they carve out the path to mercy in 2016, but they will lay a foundation of justice and love that will be felt for years to come.
Congratulations
Congratulations go to Jessica Borg who was announced as the winner of the Lions Youth of the Year for the zone of Moore Park last week.

Students need to remember that they are to be sun-safe at all times – they must have t-shirts with sleeves and preferably collars. They are to have longer shorts – particularly the girls as they will be using harnesses for some of the activities. Each student needs to have their own sunscreen as well. A raincoat is a must because even if it is raining the activities will still go ahead; obviously they won't if the instructors feel it is unsafe.

Quiet Achiever
This weeks' quiet achiever is Keilani Morris, Year 11 Chisholm 6.
Keilani is a delight to have in the Chisholm House. She works hard in lessons, says positive things about students and staff and can be found helping others without desire for recognition.

Ten Pin Bowling – Week 3
Firstly, I would like to correct an error from my Week One Report: A couple of standouts for Week One were Samuel McMah (not Josh Haack) with 157, the highest (unhandicapped) game score for Shalom students in Week One. My apologies to both Sam and Josh for the error.
The Stars of the Week
For Week Two were awarded on Wednesday to two Shalom Students:
Angela Johnstone scored 53 over her average with a score
of 139
Connor Dingle scored 72 points above his average with an outstanding score
of 200
Well done to both of these students. They were awarded a free game from Bundy Bowl & Leisure.
Standouts for Week 3
Amber Craven-Hughes and Josh Haack both scored a game of 164 in their first game on Wednesday. Well done. I would also like to thank all the students on the Shalom Ten Pin Bowling teams for their great team spirit and excellent behaviour. They represent Shalom College very well. It is also great to see them encouraging and congratulating students and teams from other schools as well.

Open Girls Volleyball – Week 3
The Shalom 1 Open Girls volleyball team had a convincing 2 sets to nil win over St Luke's despite having key players Isabellel Matebau and Bella Santalucia absent.
Shalom strived for a more skilled volleyball game and where possible aimed for a dig, set and spike to complete their attack. Led by their always determined and encouraging captain Skye Rathbone, the Shalom girls superior skills won out in the end. Another great team effort Shalom!

Blood Bank First Visit
On Monday 22 February, Shalom students made their first visit to the Blood Bank. The group consisted of mostly new donors; it was wonderful to see their enthusiasm and commitment mixed with some nerves for this community service. Thank you to those who donated as well as those students who tried to donate.
Last week we found out that the school came fourth in the state for the number of donations students made last year. A wonderful effort! Ex-students you may continue donating under the Shalom banner for as long as you wish. Congratulations also go to Rice House whose teachers and students made the most donations last year. A trophy was presented to the House at the recent assembly.

Year Twelve Geography Excursion
Geography students undertaking the unit 'Social Communities' recently completed field work at Bargara. The aim of the excursion was to measure the liveability of Bargara, a coastal urban space subject to change. Students were expected to gather data and conduct surveys to make decisions for intergenerational sustainability as well as use spatial technology. The class was appreciative of receiving the perspective of the Tanzanian exchange teacher Jennifer. Thanks must go to the business houses of Centre Point Bargara for providing valuable information in order for the students to extend their understanding of this space and support them in their decision making about liveability.

Science and Mathematics Competitions for 2016
This year Shalom College students have the opportunity to participate in the following national and international competitions:
ICAS Science Competition: Tuesday 31 May
Australian Mathematics Competition: Thursday 28 July
Students are assessed against other students in the same school year, state and country. The competitions are designed to be a fun event, removed from the pressures of formal assessment with problems and questions designed to stimulate the interest of students. All students receive a certificate showing their level of achievement and a detailed report outlining their performance.
If your student would like to participate in either the ICAS Science Competition or the Australian Mathematics Competition parents need to complete the appropriate nomination form attached and make the required payment to the Accounts Office by Friday 22 April.
