Principal's Reflection
I came across this story, a parable, written by Steve Goodier, and thought that I would share it with you. It is thought provoking for both teachers but particularly parents.
A young teacher had a dream that an angel appeared to him and said, "You will be given a child who will grow up to become a world leader. How will you prepare her so that she will realise her intelligence, grow in confidence, develop both her assertiveness and sensitivity, be open-minded, yet strong in character? In short, what kind of education will you produce that she can become one of the world's truly great leaders?"
The young teacher awoke in a cold sweat. It had never occurred to him before - any one of his present students or future students could be the person described in his dream. Was he preparing them to rise to any position to which they may aspire? He thought, "How might my teaching change if I knew that one of my students was this person?" He gradually began to formulate a plan in his mind.
This student would need experience as well as instruction. She would need to know how to solve problems of various kinds. She would need to grow in character as well as knowledge. She would need self-assurance as well as the ability to listen well and work with others. She would need to understand and appreciate the past, yet feel optimistic about the future. She would need to know the value of lifelong learning in order to keep a curious and active mind. She would need to grow in understanding of others and become a student of the spirit. She would need to set high standards for herself and learn self-discipline, yet she would also need love and encouragement, that she might be filled with love and goodness.
His teaching changed. Every young person who walked through his classroom became, for him, a future world leader. He saw each one, not as they were, but as they could be. He expected the best from his students, yet tempered it with compassion. He taught each one as if the future of the world depended on his instruction.
After many years, a woman he knew rose to a position of world prominence. He realised that she must surely have been the girl described in his dream. Only she was not one of his students, but rather his daughter. For of all the various teachers in her life, her father was the best.
I've heard it said that "Children are living messages we send to a time and place we will never see." But this isn't simply a parable about an unnamed school teacher. It is a parable about you and me - whether or not we are parents or even teachers. And the story, our story, actually begins like this:
"You will be given a child who will grow up to become……" you finish the sentence. If not a world leader, then a superb father or mother? An excellent teacher? A gifted healer? An innovative problem solver? An inspiring artist? A generous philanthropist?
Where and how you will encounter this child is a mystery. But believe that one child's future may depend upon influence only you can provide, and something remarkable will happen. For no young person will ever be ordinary to you again. And you will never be the same.

Curriculum Notes
We are now well into Term One and with this comes the inevitable increase in focus on assessment. When preparing for assessments students need to direct their energies towards working both harder and smarter and there is a lot that we can do as teachers and parents to assist them.
Assessment Calendar
The Assessment Calendar (now referred to as "Curricular Activities") is available via the Parent Lounge. To access the Parent Lounge you will need to know your intranet login and password; once logged-in, click on the name of your child under Curricular Activities Due to the left of the screen. You will note that there is a separate entry for each child in the family enrolled at the College.
The Assessment Calendar includes information about all assessment tasks for all students including the Activity Name, Group (subject area), Start Date, Draft Date (only appears for electronic submissions - see task sheets for more details), Due Date and Activity Status. At this stage all assessment tasks have been listed for Semester One.
Learning Area Coordinators manage and provide initial entries for the calendar. These entries may be updated by the class teacher. Please contact the appropriate Learning Area Coordinator or class teacher for more information about assessment tasks.
Please note that the Curricular Activities are not moderated to 'spread' assessment tasks over the semester. There are numerous assessment tasks assigned across the College for Semester One and each of these is timed according to particular subject requirements which makes intervention to spread assessments impractical. However, teachers will suggest timelines to help students manage their time when a task is set; students (with your support) are encouraged to use this information in conjunction with the Forward Planner 2016 (pages 120-123) in the Student Record Book to help spread the workload and to meet deadlines. It is not unusual for assessment loads to be heavy around peak times such as the weeks leading up to the end of term or an examination block. Our students must develop the capacity to manage time and we all have a part to play in this. Please contact your child's Pastoral Care or class teacher if you would like assistance in helping your child to develop time management and assessment management skills.
Assessment and Attendance
Students are continuously involved in assessment activities in all subjects across all year levels which include assignments, performances and tests. This continuous approach to assessment requires that it must be part of the learning the students engage with rather than something that is just tacked on at the end of a unit, term or semester. This in turn ensures that all assessment is valuable, meaningful and authentic and explains to some extent why there is no one time within a term where it is convenient for students to be absent for an extended period.
Further details of attendance requirements in relation to assessment are included in the Record Book on pages 12 and 14. Note that Year 11 and 12 students in particular have strict requirements in relation to attendance and assessment.
Year 11 and 12 End of Term One Examinations
The Year 11 and 12 end of Term One examination timetable has been posted on the College intranet ('Assessment & Reporting' tab), the College website ('Curriculum/Senior School/Forms & Publications') and Daily Notices (pushed to students via Student Café). Most students will have at least one examination during the block, some will have quite a number depending on the subjects they study and how assessment is conducted in these subjects. Not all subjects use the examination block.
While most students will have only a few examinations during the examination block which will give them some time in between to prepare, rest and study, others may have up to six examinations during the examination block and even two examinations in the one day. This can contribute to stress levels of all concerned, but the challenges can be managed through planning, prioritising and communication. In particular, students are encouraged to:
- adopt a systematic approach to the use of the examination timetable and the Record Book where the Annual Planner, Homework/Study Plan and daily Homework entries sections are effectively used to establish a study plan to manage time and prepare emotionally, physically and mentally for examinations (a student responsibility - supported and monitored by parents and teachers);
- make realistic choices about priorities and expectations that balance family, homework/study, extra-curricular school activities/responsibilities, sports and cultural activities, paid employment and personal/social interests (again, a student responsibility - supported and monitored by parents and teachers); and
- maintain contact with teachers, especially if things appear to be going wrong or if something unexpected happens that interrupts study plans or affects attendance at examinations (this is what 'special provision' is for).
http://www.shalomcollege.com/cmsAdmin/uploads/year_11_and_12_eot1_exams_2016.pdf
Attendance During Examinations
During the examination block all Year 11 and 12 students are deemed to be in attendance but they are only required at school to sit scheduled examinations or to complete supplementary assessments if required. When attending the College during examination blocks students must be in full and correct College day uniform. When not in attendance during the examination block students must be engaged in home study, assignment work or work experience or work placement activities – it is not 'time off'.
Students have been asked to revise their responsibilities related to examinations and assessment in general outlined on pages 16 to 19 of the Student Record Book. It is particularly important that students who are absent from examinations contact the appropriate House Coordinator immediately. In most cases, supplementary sittings will be required of students who miss scheduled examinations.
End of term examinations are scheduled for Year 11 and 12 students from Thursday 17 March to Tuesday 22 March. Please note that this is a slight departure from the dates advertised in the College Calendar with Wednesday 23 March returned to normal classes for most students.
Students who have few or no examinations scheduled during the examination block are expected to be engaged in assignment processing at home, organised Work Experience, Structured Workplace Learning related to VET studies or attendance at a workplace related to an established School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship. Please contact Mrs Liza O'Donnell on 4155 8136 or at Liza_ODonnell@shalomcollege.com for more information about Work Experience, Structured Workplace Learning or School-based Apprenticeships or Traineeships.
If you would prefer your child to maintain regular attendance throughout the examination block, please contact me. Supervision will be arranged until 3:00pm on each day of the examination block.

Last year we had Brett Lee (not the fast bowler!) speak to the staff here at the College; some of you may have attended his parent workshop. Brett has developed an online course committed to the well-being of all children in the physical world and in the cyber environment. He has developed valuable online training courses aimed to educate, empower and support parents and carers to protect children from the increasing risks online. This is the link:

Students need to remember that they are to be sun-safe at all times – they must have t-shirts with sleeves and preferably collars. They are to have longer shorts – particularly the girls as they will be using harnesses for some of the activities. Each student needs to have their own sunscreen as well. A raincoat is a must because even if it is raining the activities will still go ahead; obviously they won't if the instructors feel it is unsafe.

Lions Youth of the Year Quest
Sophie Whitelum
Last Tuesday 1 March, seven Year 12 senior students participated in the Hinkler Lions Club judging of the Lions Youth of the Year Quest at the St Mary's Complex. In addition, there were four competitors from St Luke's Anglican School involved. The Shalom College students were: Theodor Delaney, Ayla Duffy, Timothy Harris, Jerry McGiffin, Benjamin Mingin, Monique Van Kooten and Sophie Whitelum. Brother Rochford attended to support the students.
During the afternoon, all students faced a panel of six judges for a twenty minute individual interview. This section constitutes ninety of the allocated one hundred and ten points overall.
Following that, in the evening, each student was involved in the public speaking segment involving a public audience. This involved two separate impromptu responses each two minutes in length. These topics were: Are students being forced to transition to adulthood too quickly in Australia today? Are we disadvantaged living outside of the south-east corner? The second question proved more problematic because students found it difficult to interpret. Afterwards, each student delivered a five minute prepared speech on a topic of their choice. Students discussed the refugee crisis, conservation of orangutans, renewable energy, social media, career opportunities, drug use in sport, bullying and harassment, corruption, mental illness and health, science and ethics and questions.
A delicious supper was provided while the judges deliberated. The competition is judged on leadership, sporting, cultural and community interests, personality, general knowledge, academic record, public speaking and the prepared speech. At the end of the evening, all competitors received certificates and awards. The overall winner, Sophie Whitelum, will now move to the next round of the competition at zone level on Saturday 12 March at Kepnock State High School Library at 1:00pm. The previous week, Jessica Borg also successfully contested the Moore Park Club final. Congratulations and best wishes to both Sophie and Jessica as they move to the next round of the competition.

Quiet Achiever
Nicholas Cahill
This week I nominate Nicholas Cahill Year 8 Rice 6, for Quiet Achiever.
In April last year, Nick became the U15 Singles State Champion in Lawn Bowls at the age of 12. In November, following this title, Nick was selected as a 13 year old to compete with the U18 Australian Team to contest a Test Series against New Zealand in Auckland. This U18 squad won this series 6-1. This is a massive achievement for such a young man, competing with and against players well beyond his years. Rice House and Shalom are very proud of his efforts and accomplishments!

Rice House Coordinator
Past Students of Shalom
During the week Br Rochford received an email from a Mr Paul Vollbon concerning some DVDs. He also included this information concerning his two sons.
"As you may recall my two sons attended Shalom; Michael, 1995 to 1999 and Bill, 1998 to 2002. During that time they were very involved in Rugby League and Bill in athletics.
Michael is a Project Manager for the BMD Group in Brisbane. He was East Works Manager on the Legacy Way Tunnel and was awarded Queensland 'Young Professional Engineer' in 2014. Bill is a Senior Cardiac Scientist at the Princess Alexandra Hospital in Brisbane and has been hugely involved in the upgrading of the catheterisation laboratory's IT Program throughout Queensland, so they must have taken some notice of their excellent teachers."
Br Rochford remembers Michael also as the only student he knows of who played in five separate Confraternity Rugby League Carnivals.

Open Girls Volleyball – Week 4
The Shalom 1 open girls volleyball had a narrow defeat against last year's premiers, Gin Gin 1. After trailing most of the first set, Shalom clawed their way back from an 11-20 deficit to almost grab the set, but went down 23-25. This tight tussle continued in the second set with great rallies and saves from both teams until time ran out with the score almost locked at 16-17. Shalom's best were the entire team! Another super effort girls!
