Principal’s Reflection

GRATITUDE has been on my mind a lot lately. It is one of the hottest topics in positive psychology and wellness at the moment; however my gratitude is not related to psychology. It is something that I have been feeling this term towards our staff and students.

I have had Year 7 camps to organise supervision for, not only through the day, but also overnight and have had both a male and a female teacher volunteer at Chaverim every night.

The College Open Day was held last Thursday 10 March and was well attended by prospective parents. To show the parents and the Year 6 students who attended, around the College I needed many guides.

Thus I would like to take this opportunity to publicly thank the many people who assisted in the above activities.

The following staff was involved in the Year 7 camps either as the class teacher or a volunteer to stay overnight:

Mr Denis Sheehan, Mrs Michelle Moller, Mr Michael Harris, Ms Karen Lyons, Mrs Keryn Staley, Mr Kevin Crowley, Mr Brett Hoskins, Mr David Allen, Mrs Shelley Allen, Mrs Jade Van Krimpen, Mrs Angela Samways, Mr Stephen Chappel, Mr Adrian Stallard, Mrs Cheryl Petersen, Mr Robin Wust, Miss Jessica Altadonna, Miss Rebecca Cavallaro and Mrs Jessica Knott.

I would also like to recognise the work of our ‘gappies’, as the Year 12s 2015 who are working in the Learning Enhancement are affectionately known as, for their contribution.

The following attended the camps: Taleigha Batt, Lewis McLure, Bronte Nash, Kelsey Henricksen and Michelle Hair.

I would like to share an email received after our Open Day from a prospective parent giving us some positive feedback. The part that was the highlight I do believe was the tour guides - the many volunteer Year 10 students who took the parents and the students for a tour of the school.

“I just wanted to tell you how impressed we were today with the Shalom open day, from the friendly greeting at the start, right through to our departure.

The college is set in some amazing grounds, beautifully kept and cared for. The depth and breadth of facilities offered to students was very impressive and in many cases better than I have observed in sandstone universities! While all the shiniest hardware and facilities in the world can make a place look great, it’s the people who inhabit that space that makes it what it really is, and that is what I wanted to feedback on.

The students who took our tour were engaging, informative and enthusiastic about their college. But more than this, as we walked around, the high-fives, the pats on the back, the brief exchanges with other students around the school gave a fulfilling sense of community. So too, did our encounters with teaching staff. There was a pervasive culture of mutual respect at every encounter ... even as each of the students bragged about which of their houses were the better … I think Hogan won on our tour, we were lead to believe they win everything!

So thank you. Our son was already sold on the open evening presentation, but this really cemented his desire to attend. Both my wife and I fully agree with him and hope to become part of the Shalom family in the near future.”

The list is long but I would like to acknowledge the students who took part:

Meka Bentley, Khaliyah Nagas, Meredith Ryan, Maddelyn Batt, Jordan Nio, Jayden Rasmussen, Sophie Martell, Chloe Maclean, Ebony Stone, Sarah Cave, Darna Gardiner, Briege Taske, Chelsea Lane, Tia Francis, Kaitlyn Geale-McCracken, Belle Maule, Amber Craven-Hughes, Ryan Bolton-Turner, Simon Rathbone, Natalie Schiffke, Renae Winkler, Chloe Elliott, Chelsea Sheppard, Sarah Bunn, Anna-Jane Vaschina, Taylah Paulsen, Madeleine Krebs, Chelsea Boys, Georgia O’Sullivan, Bonnie Niven, Lace Davies, Sebastian Foglia, Emily Radley, Celeste Humphrey, Emilee Cameron, Grace Lloyd, Catherine Hayes, Jaimison Simpson, Joshua Roebuck, Georgia Koik, Lucaeja Morrison, Zane Haster, Elise Green, Charlotte Blackwell, Callum Patroney, Jackson O’Neall, Kenneth Thompson, Jett Grogan, Jack Roelofs, Abbie Beeston, Olivia O’Beirne, Harrison Waters, Madison Test, Reegan Wightman, Tayla Larcombe, Bailey Simpson, Grace Canniffe, Charlotte Schneider, John Kelly, Allana Cassidy, Darby Flick, Cooper Meek, Louis Myers-Macdonnell, Holly Smith.

Quiet Achiever

Kodi Beeston

I would like to nominate Kodi Beeston, Year 10 Adams for this week's Quiet Achiever.

Kodi always gives 100 percent in all house activities and is nice to everyone. I had the pleasure of taking him away on a sporting trip where he was always checking to see what he could do to help. Most recently I was impressed when another student came and told me that he would like to nominate Kodi as he had shown him care and compassion during a difficult situation.

Information Technology

Term Holiday Maintenance

With the upcoming Easter holidays fast approaching, please be aware that we have scheduled maintenance during this time.

Year 10 to 12 Laptops – College Owned & BYO

As per an earlier IT article to help parents find information quickly, I have finally created two webpages in the College intranet for information regarding College owned laptops and BYO laptops.

Location – Intranet -> Information -> Notebooks Info – BYO or College Owned

These pages outline what we support for both programs with additional information to be added at a later time.

We do appreciate your continued support and understanding as we continue to try and improve the IT services we provide to Staff, Students & Parents.

Netbox BIC Agent

The IT Unit has deployed our Netbox BIC agent software last Wednesday. This is a part of our company policy for our College owned student laptops to have this software. It provides our student internet filtering to these devices outside of school. This Software’s primary use is to help protect the device from the nasty websites of today and therefore assist in protecting the devices and our systems from viruses/malware infections. So far this agent has already picked up on damaging malware that our antivirus scanner did not detect.

This agent also restricts some of the websites students can access due to the nature of having student internet filtering applied. Our teaching staff is aware of this and they are working with the IT Unit to make sure the resources they required are unblocked. Sometimes this cannot be done and our teachers will provide new resources where this is applicable. We are also working with Netbox Blue to loosen our at home policy internet filtering so more resources are available to students at home than at school. We are hoping this won’t take too long but we require patience and maturity from students during this time.

Walsh House Charity Project

Last year Walsh House students travelled to Cambodia as part of a larger Year 11 group to complete some community work in orphanages in various locations while travelling and enjoying the culture Cambodia has to offer. Students visited a Landmine Museum and saw pictures of men, women and children who lost hands due to being blown off as a result of coming into contact with the many land mines still active in the country.

This resulted in Walsh House arranging to contribute funds to cover the cost of a ‘hand’. So last Saturday afternoon, the Walsh House Captains Meg and Bailey, along with Jack and our Rotary Exchange Student Pedro, went to the Burnett Club to join with students from St Luke’s and a number of Rotary members to learn about the ‘Helping Hands Project’ and assemble a hand in readiness for it being sent to Cambodia in August this year. The groups assembling the hands worked in pairs or three to a group. The parts were in snap lock bags and a metal container for the screws. They started out by wearing a ‘glove’ to simulate a stump to try to work together to assemble the hand. The final assembled hand was placed into a pencil case with some art work created by the group members. Once the hand is distributed to someone in Cambodia, a photo will be taken of the recipient and sent back to group members who assembled the hand.

http://vimeo.com/158854769

The Vimeo clip shows some statistics on landmines, how they are deactivated and some images of the ‘hands’ fitted to a number of amputees in Cambodia.

Interschool Chess Competition

The nine members of the Shalom College Chess Club, who attended the first Wide Bay North Division interschool competition held at Walkervale State School on Thursday 3 March (Week 6) were:

Team 1: Josef Baumgartner, Courtenay Parfitt, Allen Preshy and Bryce Samuels-Rosser
Team 2: Jayden Buchanan, Keagan Geyer, Lachlan McIntosh and Abhash Pathak
Team 3: Demetri De Florian

Our players from Years 7 to 10 all performed to the best of their ability, with Bryce Samuels-Rosser being the overall individual winner of the High School Division.

The Shalom first team was a convincing winner of the High School Teams Division. Our second team placed 4th, however our Shalom competitors were often matched against each other due to the ranking system, which impacted on the overall scores for our teams.

As teams consist of four members and we had nine participants, Demetri De Florian (Year 8) was the sole member of our 3rd team. Demetri played well to achieve 8th place in the Teams division.

The students were excellent ambassadors for our school and we wish them continued success at future competitions. Anyone wishing to join the Shalom Chess Club is welcome to attend of a Tuesday lunchtime at Student Services in room SS2 (Hogan 7).

Volleyball

The Shalom 1 open girls volleyball had a convincing win against opponents Gin Gin 2.

Strong serves from Bella Santalucia and Georgia Snare set Shalom up to win many consecutive rallies to take the first set 25-15. In the second set, Shalom showed great defence scrambling for many balls and convincingly attacked their way to a 25-12 win. Isabella Espe-Makepeace was effective at the net and was keenly supported by her team members. Another enthusiastic and determined effort Shalom. Well done!

Rowing

Any student wanting to sell their Zoot Suit, can you please email details to me (email below) with regards to size, style as in male or female, condition and price. We would like this information by Tuesday 8 March.

Congratulations

Nathan Donaldson

Nathan has just competed in Perth at the Australian Junior T & F Titles. He has finished with a Bronze in the 800m event, setting a new personal best and breaking the Queensland U16 record and has won Silver in the 200m on a field of 8 runners with a personal best (knocking seven seconds off) and another Queensland record. He did not quite get to the podium in the 100m but was only 0:09 of his personal best and the Queensland record.

This was the first time Nathan had raced with carbon fibre wheels (VERY EXPENSIVE) and it obviously helped his times!

Medals are extremely hard when they race mixed Ambulant runners and wheelchairs as they use a Multi Disabled Scoring system that has many flaws and is an uneven field. Runners get away so quickly and are usually way ahead of Nathan at the start so he has to play catch up.

Nathan is now getting ready now for the Australian Opens in Sydney at the end of March.

Georgia Martin

Georgia Martin recently competed in the Open First Aid competition at the State Surf Rescue Championships held at Mermaid Beach on the Gold Coast. Georgia (and her partner) competed and were successful at the Branch Championships back in January, which then qualified them for the State Championships.

Jasmine Bowden

Jasmine Bowden (Year 7) was recently selected in the Queensland Polocrosse team that will compete at the U12 Australian National Polocrosse Championship in Albury in April. We wish Jasmine and the State team all the best.

Humanities

Recently Year 11 and 12 Ancient and Modern History students visited Brisbane to undertake a variety of historical activities. Firstly the University of Queensland was visited where Modern History students undertook a research workshop at the Social Sciences library. This workshop focused on effective search strategies and using electronic databases to search for online resources such as ebooks. The Ancient History students attended a white glove workshop handling artefacts and interpreting their purposes in a given scenario. This was followed by a guided tour of the Antiquities Museum. The students also had the opportunity to visit the State Library. The main purpose of the excursion was the afternoon visit to ‘Medieval Power: Symbols and Splendour’ the present British Museum exhibition at the State Museum at South Bank. This unique display introduced students to over two hundred artefacts of the Medieval Era, covering a wide range of precious gold, jewellery, seals, sculptures and many other symbols of courtly life dating back to 400AD.

Reminder that all students who wish to register for the Australian History and Geography Competition have until the 18 March to register. Email Mrs Bolam bolamd@shalomcollege.com
