Principal's Reflection
Last week I finished my reflection wishing the Year 11 and 12 students all the best for their exams. I also stated that they will achieve the results dependent upon their work ethic.
I was at a Principal's conference in Rockhampton last week; one of the guest speakers was Chris Wardlaw PSM, B. Ec (Hons), Dip Ed. Mr Wardlaw is the Chairman of the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority. What did interest most of us there was the fact that he was an Olympian in the 10,000 meters and marathon at the 1976 and 1980 Olympics, followed by a coaching record. This culminated in Chris being the Head Coach of the Australian Athletics Team at the 2000 Sydney Olympics………the year that Cathy Freeman won her gold medal in the 400 metres race.
One of the facts that he shared with the group that for Cathy to win that race she put in 10,000 hours of training.
When asked by a reporter afterwards if she thought about losing she replied that she doesn't think about losing. She doesn't think about winning. She just knows what she has to do. The point is: it's about the execution, putting into practice all the training that she has done.
The same attitude can apply to our senior students - it does take effort to reap rewards. 'Anything worth having is worth working for'….as the saying goes.
The following reflection is one I often read out to Year 12 students at the beginning of a year.
It is titled: "The Credit Card of Life"
Imagine there is a bank account that credits your account each morning with $1440.00. It carries over no balance from day to day. Every evening whatever part of the balance you failed to use during the day is deleted. What would you do? Draw out every dollar of course!
Each of us has such a bank account. Its name is TIME. Every morning, it credits you with 1440 minutes. Every night it writes off, as lost, whatever of this you have failed to invest to good purpose. It carries over no balance. It allows no overdraft.
Every day it opens up a fresh account for you. Every night it burns the remains of the day. If you fail to use the day's deposits, the loss is yours. There is no going back. There is no drawing on tomorrow. You must live on today's deposits. Invest it so as to get from it the utmost in health, happiness and success! The clock is running. Make the most of today.
To realise the value of ONE YEAR, ask a student who
failed their grades.
To realise the value of ONE MONTH, ask a mother who gave birth to a
premature baby.
To realise the value of ONE WEEK, ask the editor of a weekly
newspaper.
To realise the value of ONE HOUR, ask the lovers who are waiting to
meet.
To realise the value of ONE MINUTE, ask a person who missed the
train.
To realise the value of ONE SECOND, ask a person who just avoided an
accident.
To realise the value of ONE MILLISECOND, ask the person who won a silver
medal in the Olympics.
So…treasure every moment you have and put every moment to good use.
Next term is a busy term for the Year 12 students with the Retreat at Alexandra Headlands and the Formal Dinner Dance. (Dancing rehearsals begin next term – something for them to look forward to!!)
We have the Year 10 House camps out at Chaverim followed by the Year 8 students who will head out with their CSB teacher.
As the term draws to a close and Easter is almost upon us I thank our parents for the support of our students. I would also take this opportunity to thank the Year 12 students for their work in their leadership role in the College - they are off to a great start.
Current EB Negotiations Update
Please find below a letter to parents from Mr Gary Cooper the Catholic Diocese Employee Support Services Manager.
Dear Parents,
Please find below important points related to the current enterprise bargaining negotiations being conducted between Catholic Education and staff represented by their union.
- Catholic Education (as the employer) has offered a 2.5% wage increase including a guarantee to match whatever wage increase is awarded to state school teachers if that %wage increase is higher than 2.5%.
- Catholic Education has committed to backpay non-teaching staff to 1 May 2015 and teaching staff to 1 July 2015.
- The union's comparisons with NSW are irrelevant. The systems have many points of difference across classifications and throughout working conditions.
- Term-time staff employed by Catholic schools currently receive an allocation of pro-rata holidays based on 4 weeks' annual leave.
- Catholic Education through the negotiation period has agreed to 17 employee claims in-principle.
Catholic Education remains committed to reaching settlement in these negotiations as soon as possible.
Regards,
Mr Gary Cooper
Employee Support Services Manager
A Prayer to Conclude
Dear God we thank you for the wonderful students we have here in our school. May we help them learn to recognise the gifts they possess and to never underestimate their potential. May we give them the confidence and knowledge they need to achieve their dreams. Amen.
I wish you all a happy and holy Easter.

Student Welfare and Information
Positive relationships are promoted both within the classroom and via participation in school-wide activities, which build a sense of community, identity and belonging. Our mission statement emphasises that all people within our community must be treated with dignity and respect. As a school we do not condone bullying; the College takes the matter of bullying very seriously.
The House Coordinators will always investigate any reports of bullying.
I have included a definition of bullying as well as including information on conflict. Sometimes the two are confused.
Bullying - a definition
It is important that bullying be defined and that clear messages are sent about what is and is not acceptable behaviour. A school can not address the more subtle forms of bullying if they are not named and understood to be forms of harassment.
Bullying can be defined in the following ways:
- A repetitive attack causing distress not only at the time of the attack, but also by the threat of future attacks
- Involving an imbalance of power
Its nature may be:
- Verbal - name-calling, put-downs, threatening
- Physical - hitting, tripping, poking, punching, kicking, throwing objects, stealing
- Social - ignoring, hiding, ostracising
- Psychological - stalking, dirty looks, spreading rumours, hiding and / or damaging possessions.
However, we do often find that students are involved in a relationship conflict - a falling out of friends; shifting of friendship groups….and the like.
What is conflict?
In a word, conflict is a clash, a disagreement between two or more parties. In a high school setting conflicts are more frequent. Although conflict often fosters insight and growth, it is frequently perceived as a problem, something that persistently signals trouble. Someone involved in a troublesome conflict usually feels angry and the clash between the disputants can escalate and explode.
Consider the teenager dealing with a former "best friend". Characteristic of this conflict is an underlying problem. Why have the friends had a painful argument? What does each want? What does each need? What might be the underlying problem? When defining conflict, the word problem is the key.
Often when dealing with a complaint from parents or students the issue is usually raised as a bullying issue because some nasty things have been said between those involved. We find more often that it is a conflict between people.
However if the conflict continues and any of the above points mentioned in the bullying segment are brought into play then we deal with it as a bullying issue.
It is always best to report an issue to the school, preferably your child's House Coordinator, if your child is unhappy about a situation.

Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum
Throughout next term, our school will be implementing the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum with students in Years 7 and 8. The curriculum is based on principles of best practice in child safety education and centres around three key messages: Recognise, React and Report. Through a series of lessons, students will learn how to recognise, react and report when they are unsafe or find themselves in situations that can have a significate detrimental effect on their physical, psychological or emotional wellbeing.
Information about the Daniel Morcombe Child Safety Curriculum can be found at

Curriculum Notes
Homework
As a secondary college community we value the role that homework plays in supporting teaching and learning and our policy and expectations around this remain as outlined in the Student Record Book (pages 17 and 18). On a practical level parents should consider the recommended practices. As an example, Year 7 students should be doing half an hour per night five nights per week increasing gradually to 1 hours per night by the end of the year. This equates with up to 15 minutes of homework for each of the four classes attended during the day. Parents are encouraged to establish a dialog with teachers if homework appears excessive, too brief or ineffective.
Please be assured that teachers will work with parents to adjust homework to suit the learning needs of children. Not all students work in the same way or at the same rate and all children will experience times when their concentration and productivity varies due to a number of factors, often beyond their control. The key for us as adults in the relationship is to offer appropriate support where we can without removing the responsibility from our children for completing homework to the best of their ability.
I encourage parents and carers to become familiar with our expectations and to communicate any concerns with class teachers or me.
Core Studies Parent Teacher Interviews: bookings open on Thursday
Core Studies Parent Teacher Interviews may be arranged online via the Parent Lounge at any time from 8:00am this Thursday 24 March until 3:00pm Wednesday 13 April. Parents without internet access may contact the College on 4155 8111 to make appointments from 8:00am on Thursday 24 March.

Quiet Achiever
This week we would like to congratulate two quiet achievers from McAuley House who have both achieved well on the softball field.
Jude Hellmuth-Williamson
Our first mention goes to Year 8 student, Jude Hellmuth-Williamson, who on Saturday 5 March came off the field with three trophies and a big smile on his face. Jude received a trophy for participation in the season, also for being a player in the winning under 14 team for the season and last but not least he also picked up a major trophy for the coaches 'Player of the Year'. What a great effort.
Brayden Wadwell
Also for softball Brayden Wadwell in Year 10 was honoured for his ability on the field. Brayden received the Junior Sportsperson of the Year award from Bundaberg Softball Association. He received the award for being active in the softball community and coaching the tee ball players every Saturday morning, umpiring and being the Junior Coach of the U15 Bundaberg Rep Team that will be travelling to Rockhampton in April. Brayden has also represented the U15 team for the past four years and will now trial for the U17s rep team to travel away in September.
Both boys are respected players in their teams and are always encouraging to their team mates. Certainly sticking to our McAuley motto of MERCY.

Lions Youth of the Year
Jessica Borg and Sophie Whitelum |
Blake, Mr Gastaldon and Sophie |
Last week two of our students, Jessica Borg and Sophie Whitelum competed in the Bundaberg Lions Youth of the Year. Both did exceptionally well and Sophie has now made it through to the Regional finals.
Congratulations to both girls and good luck Sophie for the Regionals.
Information Technology
Holiday Maintenance
Just another reminder that with the upcoming Easter holidays there will be scheduled maintenance during this time.
Netbox BIC Agent Update
We had a successful test last week of our customised afterhours policy. We have loosened the categories for afterhours to allow sites that we restrict for bandwidth reasons during school hours. We have had a positive response from some students which we appreciate. I would like to thank students for their patience during this process as it's not a quick change and it takes time to work through and troubleshoot.
We do appreciate your continued support and understanding as we continue to try and improve the IT services we provide to Staff, Students & Parents.

Chisholm House
Chisholm House is very proud to announce a considerable charitable donation to Caritas this week. We had a coin weigh in, competing against each PC within the house. PC6 and Mrs Smith won the weigh in and all PC groups' coins totalled exactly $300 and 18kgs! A fantastic effort by all.

Volleyball - Week 6
The Shalom 1 open girls volleyball team had a tight tussle against Isis in their cross pool playoff, with a 2 sets to 1 win.
In the first set, Shalom lead the entire way, claiming the set 25-20, with positive team attack from all players and accurate serving from Caitlin McDougall. The second set saw the tables turned with both teams leading throughout this set but Shalom was scrambling more than attacking, eventually going down 18-25. The third and final set was vital for Shalom to keep their Finals Day play-offs alive and the girls stepped up a notch to easily claim this set 15-7, with Bella Santalucia whipping the final five serves to end the match on a high for Shalom. Shalom 1 now meets last year's premiers Gin Gin 1 in the first playoff on Finals Day. We're excited, go Shalom!

Ten Pin Bowling - Week 6
Wednesday was our last official competition game for the Summer Senior Series. With six Shalom College teams participating over the last six weeks it has been great to see students striving to improve their skills. All teams have demonstrated excellent sportsmanship towards members of their own team as well as all other participating schools. I would personally like to thank all the players for a great season. Win or lose it has been great.
With the competition over, next Wednesday will be a chance for the bowlers to kick back and have fun enjoying some rock and roll bowling
