Principal's Reflection

I have very much enjoyed being back at Shalom since the beginning of term after being on leave last term. I am very grateful to Mrs Elizabeth Austin-Campbell who covered for me as Acting Principal in that time. Elizabeth, as always, did a great job.

The pleasure of being back to work was dulled with the loss of Ashleigh Ford (Year 12 Hogan 2014) who died in a swimming accident a few days ago. Ashleigh, along with twin sister Taylor and older brother Jared, was a wonderful member of this community. Ashleigh had a great love of life and she made a great impact on those lucky enough to call her a friend. It was only recently that I ran into her around town to have her tell me how excited she was about her Paramedic's course. Her loss is an awful tragedy and, last Friday, many from the Shalom community joined with hundreds of others whose lives were touched by Ashleigh's to celebrate a life really well lived. Our hearts and our thoughts and our prayers go out to Ashleigh's family. At Shalom, we are enormously grateful to the family for allowing this community to share in something of such a beautiful life.

Easter Vigil

At the Easter Vigil ceremony in the Holy Rosary Parish I was able to join a very large congregation celebrating the resurrection of Jesus and all the life and hope that event promises. At that liturgy the local parish welcomed some eleven new adult members to the Catholic Community through Baptism and the Sacraments. Among those were Shalom staff members, Mr Aaron Brown, Ms Karen Miller-Smith, Ms Kelsie Huntly as well as Shalom Student Shay Black, and Ms Miller-Smith's son Connor. Personally, I was touched and moved by their adult commitment to faith and a God who loves them in an era when participation in a faith community is not as warmly regarded as it once was.

Whilst I had time on my hands in Term 1, I was able to tune into some of the very public hearings of the Royal Commission and particularly to the appearances by Cardinal Pell. The Child Abuse enquiry has been a torturous and painful time for the Church. It would certainly appear that this issue will test the real mettle of the Church's faith in suffering, death and resurrection! Cardinal Pell's testimony, irrespective of any decisions on his part, has highlighted an appalling lack of compassion, faith, authenticity and, indeed, basic human decency on the part of many Bishops, Priests, Religious and other Church workers. As I sat in the pews at Holy Rosary during the Easter Vigil, I wondered to myself, why would these people want to join our mob? We have so much of which to be ashamed. Personally, I am so angry at those men who hid behind a clerical collar and committed such awful crimes. Then, I also thought about all of the others. The Priests like Father John, Father Andrew and Father Terry in Bundaberg who are good and decent men. I thought of the thousands of religious brothers like our own Brother Rochford who have given their lives, totally, for others. The Catholic Church is still the backbone of social services for the most dispossessed in Australia. The Church still puts its time, talent and resources into Education and Health Care. Caritas Australia is one of the largest organisations providing essential care to those who have little outside of Australia. Australian Priests, Brothers, Nuns and lay women and men are still putting themselves in harms' way in Mission fields around the world. The Church, like Christ on Good Friday, is battered and bruised and humiliated. But, at its core and at its best, it can be the best story ever told.

Art Refurbishments

At the start of Term 2 the College took possession of a new Art classroom, two fully refurbished rooms and an outdoor art courtyard. Local firm, Murchie Constructions along with Madden Architects have done an outstanding job on this project. Work continues on the new Band room and practice rooms adjoining the Performing Arts Precinct which look like being completed by the end of this term. These will be more great facilities for Shalom students.

Welcome

Welcome to our new students and families who have commenced with us in Term 2. We also welcome Ms Erika Williams who will be working in Hospitality for the remainder of the year whilst Ms Rhonda Challen is on leave. We are very pleased to welcome back, on a part-time basis, a long serving and wonderful staff member Ms Maria Fresta. A big thank you to Ms Helena Chandler and Ms Janet Bright who completed their contracts with Shalom at the end of Term 1. We also welcome Mr Peter Brown as a new member of the Maintenance team.

It Will Be Busy!

This term is jam packed already with –

  • Year 12 Retreat
  • Year 10 Camps
  • Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN testing
  • Year 12 Formal
  • QCS Trials for Year 12
  • The College Musical - 'The Addams Family'
  • Three public holidays

Shalom Ventures to Kilimanjaro and Everest Base Camp - Information Hour Next Tuesday Evening 19 April 6:30pm

This week we welcomed Bernie Kelly founder of 'Global Immersion', who offered our Year 10, 11 and 12 students two magnificent opportunities to join the Youth of Australia to trek the world's highest free-standing mountain, Kilimanjaro in East Africa or trek the epic trail to Everest Base Camp in Nepal this September. These experiences are a unique blend of extraordinary adventure with servitude opportunities to some of the world's neediest communities. Most of you may have heard of the 'School of St Jude' in Tanzania which welcomes Bernie's groups for three consecutive days and nights. Should the Nepal and India experience be more appealing then students work with Mother Teresa's 'Missionaries of Charity' in Calcutta. Many past Shalom students have enjoyed these profound life-shifting experiences which I am delighted to endorse. You have a wonderful chance to meet Bernie next Tuesday evening 19 April in the Performing Arts Precinct commencing 6.30pm. We strongly urge you to attend this information hour. It is a golden opportunity to meet with Bernie and past students in person for just one hour, so he can clearly explain the benefits of these extraordinary experiences to your son or daughter's development.

Parent Teacher Interviews

Parent Teacher Interviews for all year levels in all subjects (except Core Studies) are scheduled for Tuesday evenings of 10 and 17 May.

The interviews (of 10 minutes duration) will be held in the Sports Centre on those days from 3:30pm to 6:30pm. Students are welcome to attend and participate.

Interviews may be arranged online via the Parent Lounge. A letter outlining the procedure can be viewed by clicking on the link below.

The online Parent Teacher Interview booking facility will open at 8:00am on Friday 29 April and close at 5:00pm on Friday 6 May to allow teachers to prepare for interviews scheduled on the following days. Parents without internet access may contact the College on 4155 8111 to make appointments from 8:00am Friday 29 April.

While scheduled interviews are seen as an important communication between home and school, attendance is voluntary. Parents are most welcome to arrange an interview with specific teachers at any time the need arises throughout the year.

Interim Semester One Reports

Interim Semester One reports were issued electronically on Friday 15 April. The electronic reports are PDF versions of the fully formatted report that can be printed on the home printer if required. The report can be viewed and printed from the Parent Lounge by selecting the Academic Reports tab on the left.

Parents may still request a printed copy of the report. For 'one-off' requests, please contact the College office during business hours. To continue to receive printed reports, please register for the service by updating the Report Mailing address in the Parent Lounge. To do this, when logged-in to the Parent Lounge:

  1. Select the Parent Details tab to the top left of the screen
  2. Select the Update Address Details from the drop-down menu (the Postal address will first appear)
  3. Click the Next Address button at the bottom right of the screen (this will advance the screen to the Report Mailing address)
  4. Click the blue Update Address button to the right of the Report Mailing header
  5. Enter or update your address details (the first field will be initially filled with the words 'Address for postal reports' - enter your details over this text and complete the other address fields)
  6. Click the blue Submit Changes button once entries are complete

If you do not have internet access or you do not know your Parent Lounge login details, please contact the College office during business hours.

2016 NAPLAN Tests – Information for Parents

All Year Seven and Year Nine students will have the opportunity to sit the National Assessment Program - Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) tests to be administered on 10, 11 and 12 May this year. The NAPLAN tests will assess students in the areas of literacy (including reading, writing, spelling, punctuation and grammar) and numeracy (number, measurement, chance and data, space, working mathematically, algebra function and pattern). The results from these tests will be used for individual student reporting to parents, school reporting to the community and aggregate reporting by the State against national standards or benchmarks.

Our Core Studies teachers are leading the preparation program as part of the normal teaching and learning process within classes. The program includes a series of activities exposing students to the types of tasks encountered in the five sub-tests of language conventions, writing, reading, numeracy (without calculators) and numeracy (with calculators) and test administration procedures. The focus of our preparation of students is on developing 'test-wiseness' rather than content knowledge which is being developed continuously. Active participation in the preparation sessions will allow students to become familiar through practice with the nature of the test and the strict test conditions involved.

Please note that while maximum participation is expected, parents have the right to withdraw their child or seek exemption from sitting the tests. Students who are not exempt and who do not sit the tests will not receive a report of test results and will not be included in the school data. Students who are exempt from the tests will be reported as having not reached the benchmarks. Special provision is also available to assist students who have recognised learning difficulties to sit the tests.

Parents who are considering withdrawing their child from the 2016 NAPLAN tests and have not discussed this with us are asked to contact the Middle School Coordinator, Mrs Megan Munckton on 4155 8294 by Friday 6 May. Similarly, parents wishing to pursue exemption or special provision for the tests based on recently emerging circumstances may also contact Mrs Munckton for further advice.

For further information about the NAPLAN tests or the preparation program please contact the Middle School Coordinator, Mrs Megan Munckton as above. Alternatively, you may wish to take the time to peruse the information available on the Queensland Curriculum and Assessment Authority (QCAA) website at www.qcaa.qld.edu.au and the Australian Curriculum, Assessment & Reporting Authority (ACARA) website at

Mobile Dental Clinic Visit

The Bundaberg School Dental Service will be at Shalom College from Tuesday 26 April. They will be offering students from Year 7 to 10 a free dental examination and treatment to all consenting students that have returned their paperwork.

All consent forms should have now been returned, however they are still being accepted by the College office.

Quiet Achiever

This week's quiet achiever is Bella Hensel, Hogan Year 12.

Bella has been an amazing leader within her Pastoral Care class Hogan 7 this year. She has been instrumental in organising interactive activities and helping out with organising their Subway shared lunches.

Bella is a keen cultural student who is also heavily involved in the school musical this year. She is a very mature student and an excellent role model of servant leadership, getting jobs done in the background without any fuss.

It goes without saying that she has been a fantastic help to not only her Year Seven buddy, but all of the younger students in her Pastoral Care class and Hogan House.

Thanks for your diligent, organised and mature approach to your Senior year so far Bella!

2016 Annual Rotary Quiz

The 2016 Annual Rotary Quiz was held in the last week of first term on Tuesday 22 March. Shalom College was confidently represented by a team of three very competent students: Theodor Delaney, Sophie Whitelum and Timothy Harris. Bundaberg East Rotary Club was responsible for the organisation of the night. A complimentary meal was provided for the student competitors and their teacher. The competition consisted of six rounds of ten questions for the teams, a round for individuals and a round for the teachers.

Our team dominated the night by leading from the very first round of questions to emerge as very clear winners in the Team's Quiz to reclaim the competition shield. As well, each student was awarded an individual trophy for their efforts. In the individual section, Theo and Sophie were locked together at the end of the questions. A gruelling playoff followed with Sophie finally claiming victory and a rewarding $100 JB HiFi gift card. Theo had to settle for a $50 JB HiFi gift card. Tim was one of four students to finish in third place; however, he unsuccessfully contested a similar playoff and consequently missed out on winning the prize of a $50 JB HiFi gift card.

Thank you to Brother Rochford and the parents who supported the students on the night. The team was outstanding in their performance. They even managed a perfect score in one of the rounds of questions.

Simpson Prize

In 2015 the Year 9 Extension CSB class tackled the Simpson Prize question as part of their studies on World War I. Rory Delaney has recently been awarded a Highly Commended certificate for his research essay. The Simpson Prize is a national competition where entrants research an aspect of Australian involvement in WWI. Students must incorporate primary and secondary sources held by the Australian War Memorial in their research. The question for last year's prize was:

The landing at Gallipoli on 25 April 1915 is often given prominence in accounts of the Gallipoli campaign. What other events or experiences of the campaign would you argue require more attention? Why?

Rory's essay focused on the experiences and organisation of the evacuation of the Gallipoli Peninsular. Congratulations Rory on your excellent work and national recognition!

We had a great day at finals day on the last Wednesday of term. Competition ended the week before so this was a chance to have fun and celebrate the successes big and small. Although Shalom did not win any of the overall team events some great individual successes were achieved.

Highest Female Game Score - Amber Craven-Hughes with a score of 164
Highest Male Game Score (with handicap) - Samuel McMah with a score of 241
Highest Male Series Score - Connor Dingle with a score of 346
Highest Female Series Score (with handicap) - Angela Johnstone with a score of 427

I would personally like to thank all nineteen students for their enthusiasm and great sportsmanship over the last seven weeks. It has been great to watch and enjoyable to be part of. All students have strived to improve and simply bowl the best they can and have a lot of fun along the way.

Table Tennis

Shalom successfully defended the Table Tennis Championship trophy at the recent Summer Sports Finals Day.

The Division One team of Brendan Connolly, Samuel Freeman, Leah Scott and Walker Welsh defeated St Luke's in a nail-biting 5 games to 4 win. The Division Two team of Cooper Lawrance, Mitchell Nash and Wyatt Welsh dominated their pool to make it to their division final, where they were overcome by strong competition. Both teams deserve to be commended for their excellent game play and sportsmanship throughout the competition.

Further congratulations are extended to Samuel Freeman, Leah Scott, Brendan Connolly and Briahna Connolly (Senior 2015) for their excellent results at the recent Queensland Club Junior Championships, with numerous medals in the teams, individual and doubles competitions. Sam, Leah and Briahna have been selected to compete at the National Competition in the Northern Territory in July.

Shalom students will have opportunities to defend last year's Schools State Table Tennis title at the upcoming Regional event. Nominations are due to Miss McHugh by Friday 22 April.

Shalom Dominant in Summer Sport - Tennis

Shalom College has a proud tradition in tennis and this continued once again in the recent Summer Sport.

In the Senior Division, Shalom's team of Max Thomson, Brendan Ryan, Naomi Jarman, Darcy Braund, Patrick Harris and Isaac Coyne were comfortable winners over Bundaberg High in the final 24-8. All those in the team played admirably, led well by Isaac Coyne who once again showed his skills as a quality player.

In the Junior Division, three of the five teams that Shalom entered made the semi-final. Shalom White (Harrison Thwaite, Jack Watson, Michel Smith, Brody Allison, Zachary Messitt and Harrison Foster) lost to a strong North Bundaberg SHS in the semi-final while Shalom Grey (Brigid Ryan, Sebastian Smith-Morel, Nathanael Pascoe, Ethan Sarnadsky and Ciarne Tanna) defeated Shalom Black (Harry Packwood, Nahum Pascoe, Bayley Herwig, Patrick Maher and Riley Hunting) in a thriller in the semi-final with the match being tied at the end of the games. The semi was decided in a tense tiebreaker with Shalom Grey winning 7-5. In the playoff for 3rd and 4th, Shalom Black defeated Shalom White.

In the Grand Final of the Junior Division, North Bundaberg SHS proved too strong for Shalom Grey taking out the title 21-11 despite some spirited resistance from the Shalom players. Four of the five players in Shalom Grey are in Year 7 therefore they have another three years in this division. Shalom's future in tennis looks promising.

Also congratulations to Caya Akasaka Marshall who made the Primary School Bundaberg team recently. She will participate in the Wide Bay titles in Hervey Bay soon.

Once again, the season proved very enjoyable with a number of players playing tennis for the first time and joining in the Shalom ethos of 'having a go'. If you are looking for a summer sport that you can enjoy with your friends, keep tennis in mind for next year.

Fraser Coast Rugby Union Sevens Success

On 19 March, Shalom College entered three teams in the annual Fraser Coast Rugby Union Sevens. The competition was of a high standard with Shalom matching it with the best and eventually having one of the teams crowned Champions.

The Shalom U15s finished 7th overall. The team can be proud of their efforts and can take solace in the fact that the majority of the team are 14 years old and therefore are eligible to compete in the same division next year. Jobe Lister and Nathanael Pascoe showed great leadership while Nicholas Kitchener showed incredible speed and evasion when given an opportunity.

Two teams were entered in the U13s division with Shalom Red finishing fourth while Shalom Black (pictured below) won the title for the first time in Shalom's history without dropping a game. Many of the players were unfamiliar with rugby before training began yet showed incredible skill to pick up the subtleties of the game so quickly. Shalom Black had a number of impressive players however Benjamin Milton from Shalom Black was a standout in the carnival scoring an amazing 11 tries while Nahum Pascoe scored five tries in Shalom Red's campaign.

If any student wishes to have a go at 15-a-side version of 'the game they play in heaven', please email Brendan Maher maherb@shalomcollege.com. I have never met anyone who has given rugby a go and not had a great time yet.

Age Champion 2015/16 - U13 Male - Geordan Zunker and Thomas Pascoe

In addition to these excellent performances, Ky Woods and Olivia Zunker were the recipients of the 'Defence Force Recruiting 2016 Nipper of the Year' awards. These were awarded for both effort and performance in their lifesaving as well as consistency or improvement of school results in English, Science and Maths. They each received JM boards valued at $2000 each (pictured below).

Next lifesaving season will begin in September. These Shalom students can attest to what a rewarding and enjoyable activity lifesaving is.

Music

Queensland Catholic Schools Music Festival

I have entered the following groups for this year's music festival. Choir, Vocal Ensemble, Senior Concert and Senior Jazz Bands; Chamber and Rochford strings; Thursday morning Concert Band; Friday morning Jazz Band B and the full Orchestra. We will participate over a three day period being 12 to 14 August. As soon as I have the schedule, I will let everyone know as many students will need to make a day trip while many others will need to stay overnight of which I have made bookings for Friday and Saturday night. More details to come soon.

'Have A Go' band program

In Term 2 this year the Instrumental Music Department is offering a Have-a-Go program for students who do not already play an instrument at school. This program will run during Term 2 for the moment, where students will be provided with the instrument of their choice, tuition and music at a cost of $100. The instruments that will be offered are violin, viola, cello, double bass, flute, clarinet, trumpet and trombone. Lessons are thirty minutes long and will be given weekly on a rotational basis within the school day. If your child would like to be involved in this program, please contact Mrs Edgar by email edgarr@shalomcollege.com for the application form. If your child wishes to continue in the instrumental music program at the end of Term 2, the cost would be $100 per term for lessons, $65 per term for instrument hire and you would also need to purchase your own tutor book. We hope that many of you will seize this opportunity. Music is a gift for life.

Music the Key to Success?

This is the title of an article that I read recently and it refers to the many very successful 'top-flight' professionals in the world who discovered that being involved in music during their younger days, helped lead and maintain them to their current or former professional positions. These include Paul Allen (guitar), Microsoft co-founder; Woody Allen (clarinet) actor; Larry Page (saxophone), co-founder of Google and James D Wolfensohn (cello), former Wolf Band president. All of these high flyers stated that the involvement of music has sharpened; 'collaboration, creativity, discipline and the capacity to reconcile conflicting ideas. They also stated that 'music may not make you a genius or rich, but helps train you to think differently…' Article first published in The New York Times, 12 October 2013.

Drama

The first public performances for the Drama department will be Thursday 16 June where Year 10 public performance students will present eight One Act Plays as their assessment items. The night begins at 6.30pm in the PAP theatre with entry being a gold coin donation.

Dance

A number of Shalom College students competed in the recent Bundaberg Festival of Dance held during the school holidays in the Moncrieff Theatre. Congratulations to everyone who competed and a special congratulations to the following Championship Winners and Adjudicator Award recipients for 2016.

11/12 Modern Championship Winner - Georgia Ryan
11/12 Tap Championship Runner-Up - Georgia Ryan
13/14 Years Encouragement Award - Rachael Lutz
Most Promising Tap Dancer - Jakob Baumgartner
Most Promising Jazz Dancer - Paris Hillier
Most Promising Contemporary Dancer - Siobhan Fox
Junior Bursary - Georgia Ryan

Please make a note in diaries that the major Dance Night concert for the Dance department will be Friday 28 and Saturday 29 October.

Hairspray

Three current Shalom College students, Isabelle Matebau, Sebastian Matebau and Sophie Capuzzo along with past student and College Captain 2015, Kyria Gahan, all took part in the Harvest Rain production of Hairspray last weekend. The students joined stars such as Amanda Muggleton, Christine Anu and Simon Burke in the lead roles along with 900 other chorus members for the five shows performed at the Brisbane Convention Centre. Congratulations to these students who are also currently preparing for the College musical 'The Addams Family', which will be staged 9, 10 and 11 June. Tickets will go on sale midway through May.
