Principal's Reflection
Yesterday was Mothers' Day and was, I hope, a day filled with appreciation for most of us. I'm sure that there are exceptions but mothers are an invaluable ingredient in society. I hope that each of us will have a wonderful appreciation for our own mothers and those other special women in our lives who have mothered us in different ways. The vocation of motherhood is vital for the growth and development of the young. Mothers have to make tough decisions at times with their children as well as being a 'safe zone'. It is a really important balancing act! Below is a nice story from the world of nature that reminds us of the vital role Mums play.
Bringing a giraffe into the world is a tall order. A baby giraffe falls 10 feet from its mother's womb and usually lands on its back. Within seconds it rolls over and tucks its legs under its body.
Then the mother giraffe rudely introduces its offspring to the reality of life. She lowers her head, positions herself directly over her calf and swings her leg to kick her baby so that it is sent sprawling head over heels. Then she continues to kick the calf until it stands, for the first time, on its wobbly legs. This process is repeated.
Why? Because learning how to get up quickly is a survival tactic that keeps baby giraffes safe from lions, hyenas, leopards and wild hunting dogs. It may seem hard - but it is necessary. Such is motherhood. It is not always easy.
Teaching children the lessons of life often hurts mothers more than it hurts children. But that is the responsibility of a mother. We know that we can't fight our children's battles. We know that they must take ownership and responsibility for their words and their actions. We know that we cannot shield them from the reality of life. We know that they have lessons to learn, and it is for us to teach them, even though the learning process will sometimes break our heart. But…..we are mothers…..and there is nothing nicer than having your children put their arms around you (whether they are big or small, old or young), tell you how much they love you and that you are 'the best mum in the whole wide world'. Because, to them, you are, and you always will be! To all our mums….enjoy your day….do something special, let the people who love you most spoil you….because you deserve it.

Year 11 Parents
Assistance please
It has been a long standing tradition of the College for Year 11 parents to assist with the setting up and packing up of some parts of the Formal Dinner Dance.
Our request is for assistance with:
- Tablecloths, chair covers and ties, centrepieces on tables on Wednesday morning (25 May) - we only need about 6 people
- Pack up tables and chairs on Saturday morning (28 May) - fathers and sons most welcome
Last year we had quite a few parents and students come on the Saturday morning and so we were packed up in approximately 40 minutes!
A letter with all the relevant information is available on the link below. If you can assist on any of the days, please complete the reply slip at the end of the letter and return it to the College (due today Monday 9 May).
Camps - A Reminder to Parents
If your child needs medication it must be sent to camp with the child in clearly marked packets. If your child needs an epi-pen, this must be supplied by you - the school does not supply epi-pens for camps.

Learning and Teaching
I am pleased to let parents know that Shalom College has paid for a subscription to itcthinkdrive which provides assistance and tools for students and teachers. This follows last term's professional development session for teachers, which focussed upon skill verbs that identify levels of thinking. Thinking Skills posters have been displayed in each classroom and it is intended that classroom tasks will allow practice of these skills.
itcthinkdrive allows students to download templates of tools that may assist with the completion of homework or assessment tasks and reinforce the skills learned in class. Examples are provided showing how the tools may be used. Teachers were asked to let students know details of itcthinkdrive and encourage its use.

Quiet Achiever
This week I nominate Rory Delaney, Year 10 MacKillop 5, as our Quiet Achiever. Rory is very involved inside and outside the Shalom Community. He is a fantastic cricket player and recently was awarded a Highly Commended in the 2016 Simpson Prize. On our recent Year 10 house camp it was particularly obvious what a great problem solver and team player Rory is. Rory is thoughtful, mature and generous with his time and talent and we are very proud of Rory and the quiet and unassuming way he participates in all areas of College life.

Culture Corner
In Japan, Kodomo no hi, or 'Children's Day' is celebrated every year on 5 May. On this national holiday, children are respected and honoured for their individual strengths and happiness is wished upon them. Children's Day was originally known as Tango no Sekku (literally meaning the seventh sign of the Chinese zodiac, but usually translated as Boys' Day) and was a celebration for boys. The holiday was officially changed to celebrate the health and growth of both girls and boys in 1948. Kodomo no hi is particularly well known for the unique traditions and decorations that are associated with the celebration of the holiday.
As Friday was Children's Day, Mrs Bath had her class do a wonderful cultural activity examining some of the festivities in relation to Kodomo no hi.
Taiko Drum Club
The Shalom Taiko Drum Club are looking for new members. We practise in J1 every Tuesday afternoon from 3:15pm to 4:00pm and during lunch on Day 4 of the timetable. All welcome to come and try.
Japan Tour 2017
A formal letter of interest for the Japan tour has been sent home I have attached some photos from the last tour. You don't have to be a student currently studying Japanese to attend, so if you would like to come next year during the Easter holidays please come and see Mrs Wilson.
Japanese Tutoring
I have had a couple of requests for tutoring, if you would like to come to tutoring I can offer this from 3:15pm to 4:00pm on Tuesday afternoon by appointment or during lunch on Day 4 of the timetable.
Sakado Visit
A very big thank you to all the students and their families for volunteering to host the Sakado students next term. Keep an eye on the daily notices for more information in the coming weeks.
Year 11 ACTS Camp
This years' ACTS camp (A Chance to Serve), was all about the service us as a school community can do to make positive changes in the school and wider community. We have 84 600 seconds a day, and we were constantly asked, 'How are you going to use them?'. We realised how important it is to be 'other centred' and that if we want to make a difference in the world, we have to focus on the others around us, step out of our comfort zones and stop being self-centred. Our challenge was to catch each other in service and we have all noticed that service can come in different forms and sizes; opening a door for someone, a simple hug, picking up something someone has dropped. The little things we do, will all end up having a big effect on the world and the way we live. During the sessions, we learnt about service and slowly worked towards a plan to further the service we do in our college. Shalom does so much already but we, as a team, are going to build awareness on issues we think are important within our community and take action with our plan. It would be greatly appreciated if everyone could help us achieve our goals to build a greater Shalom.
We would like to thank Mrs Petersen for the experience. It is truly amazing how fast you can bond with people in 3 days. We have all grown stronger us a school group and within ourselves and are excited to work together on our project. We would also like to thank Mr Aplin for driving us to Yeppoon and back, and for the taking us to Maccas.
Feel free to speak to any of us about Acts camp. We would like to encourage the Year 10's to apply for ACTS this year and the younger students when their time comes.

Rugby Union News
On Saturday 30 April and Sunday 1 May, a number of Shalom rugby players travelled to Emerald to trial for the CQ Bushrangers team as part of the annual Country Muster. Our boys performed exceptionally well and proved once again that Shalom players can match it with the best from Country Queensland.
Huge congratulations to the following players who gained selection in the Bushrangers to travel to the State Championships in July at the Gold Coast.
U12s: Ilamia Cattell, Cody Madden
U13s: Chelson Diggins, Hamish Young, Nahum Pascoe
U14s: Nathanael Pascoe, Benjamin Milton
Well done also to the following players who also trialled: Patrick Maher, James Waters, Kynan Hard, Edward Ryan, Matthew Jackson, Tim Moonie and David Grey. Many of these players would have caused the selectors some headaches with their excellent performances.
Keep an eye out for the upcoming game between Shalom and Rockhampton Grammar. If anyone is interested in taking up rugby, please see me for more details. New players are always welcome.

Inter School Cross Country
Congratulations to all the students who were involved in the teams Cross Country at St Lukes a few weeks ago. The results were fantastic with first places to the 13years and 15years Girls teams. Along with the first places, Shalom had several 2nd places with numerous teams placing well in all events.
Shalom finished 2nd overall. Thanks to all the staff for helping out on the day and a special thank you to all those students for volunteering to run and fill positions in teams. A great effort!
Following on from the Teams event, a couple of weeks ago 54 Shalom students travelled to Gin Gin SHS for the Bundy District Individual Cross Country. The students performed very well over a cruelling course with many placing in the top six of their respective age groups. Shalom was outgunned on the day by St Lukes in the Junior Division (Year 7, 8 and 9) but finished equal 1st in the Senior Division (Year 10, 11 and 12) with St Luke's. A special mention must go to Lee-Challe Kriel (13years girls), Bailey Rach (16years boys) and Joshua Adcock (17 years Boys) who were named Age Champions on the day. Along with these three Age Champions, Shalom has another 17 students (listed below) that have gained selection in the Bundy team to trial for Wide Bay on the Tuesday 31 May in Maryborough. Rowing
Yesterday was the second Lead-Up Regatta and the Shalom Rowers all put in a great effort. Everyone have been putting in some huge hours gearing up for the Head of the River in June. None of these regattas would not take place without the generous sponsorship from Bundaberg Radiology. Shalom Rowing would not be where it is without the endless support of the Shalom Rowers Supporters Group and all the volunteer coaches. Thank you for your efforts!
