Principal’s Reflection

‘An Unreflected Life Is Not Worth Living’ is a quote attributed to the great philosopher Socrates. I have no doubt that it is just as true today as it was in 400BC when Socrates lived. Every one of us needs to reflect on what we do and to look for ways to live a more meaningful life. This is true for individuals and institutions. This week Shalom is continuing to undertake this process. Monday to Wednesday this week we welcome to the College three educators to undertake a process developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research called the ‘National School Improvement Tool’. Trevor Gordon, Dianne Pekin and Christina Rogers are not connected to Shalom or to Catholic Education. Their role is to spend time with teachers, students and some parents and to look at the effectiveness of our teaching and student learning. The team will be very, very busy in their three days at Shalom. This is a process we have not gone through before and we are looking forward to getting insightful and useful feedback. Shalom is a wonderful school but there are always things we can do better. Teachers here work very hard for and with their students but the very best of teachers will benefit from examining their practice and reflecting with others about ways in which they can improve that practice. Teaching, like any profession, is a skill developed, honed and improved over years. Careful reflection, of the type we will do this week, will be very important.

Later this year in July, the College will continue this reflection through the Diocesan School Renewal and Improvement process that occurs for each school every four years. The work we do with the NSIT Audit team will provide very useful background for that week.

Anxiety in Young People

Anxiety in Young People is an increasing issue. Some young people, for a multitude of reasons, wrestle with significant amounts of stress and anxiety. Sponsored by the Rockhampton Diocese, there will be a workshop held at Shalom, in the Loyola Centre on the evening of Thursday 9 June. Please check out the attached flyer. This event will commence at 7:30pm. This is also the opening night of our Musical so it might be easier for those attending this workshop to park in the bus park beside the Loyola Centre.

Parents and Friends Association

The Parents and Friends Association meet in the College Staff room Tuesday next week at 5:30pm. This is never a particularly long or demanding meeting but the P&F perform a wonderful function for the College and it would be great to see new faces at the meeting - you will be very welcome. I received the following email from a Year 7 parent who made the choice to attend the meeting:

As a new Year 7 Mum, with much trepidation I attended the last P&F Meeting. To my surprise, given that Shalom has over 1300 students, there were only about ten people in attendance. Over the next hour or so, I realised how passionate these people were about the school and gained valuable insight into a few of the many activities that Shalom P&F have been a part of. For me personally, I learned about ‘Helping Hands’, ‘Bombardment’ and Funding for Drought Families in Longreach as well as meeting Jenny (a teacher from Africa). My new found information was fantastic for discussions with my daughter about the new school she has the privilege of attending. I will be attending further P&F Meetings, as it is such a good opportunity to be informed and be able to ask questions on the activities at the school. It would be sad to lose the P&F as it is such valuable tool for parents raise concerns and offer suggestions.

Year 10 Dinners

Recently three classes of Year 10 Catering students prepared meals for their parents in the Panache Restaurant at Shalom. These were very well attended and a great success. I was very pleased to receive some great feedback on these events from a couple of parents who attended.

Good Morning Mr Reid,

I hope you’ve recovered from a huge day and night!!

Glen and I would like to sincerely thank both you, Mr Cameron and the Year 10 Catering classes on not only an amazing meal but a wonderful night.

From the moment we arrived at Shalom and were greeted the entire way along the path to the Restaurant, it was obvious it was going to be a great night. The professional and friendly service and presentation of the appetisers, punch, main and dessert (all of which tasted incredible I might add) was beyond anything we ever expected having never been to a Catering dinner before.

We fully appreciate that something of this magnitude with so much preparation required goes above and beyond a ‘normal’ (if there is such a thing) day for all the staff involved and we appreciate the effort involved in giving this real-life experience to these young men and women who obviously also rose to the challenge.

Thank you again to everyone involved for a night (and food) that was thoroughly enjoyed by all.

Kind Regards

Just a note (as a parent) to say thank you for the lovely meal and experience on Monday night; it was so lovely to see the students so engaged and excited to show off their catering talents to their family members.

The evening was so nicely organised and such a nice confidence booster for the maturing students.

Thanks to you both, Dom and Tom for putting in a ‘double’ shift two days in a row, moments like these is what makes high school so special for so many students at Shalom.

Social Media Education for Parents

Please try to find time to have a look at the website http://learn.internetsafetraining.com/ (password is shalom16). This is a fantastic resource for parents who want to learn a little more, in simple form, about the challenges and opportunities of the Social Media that many young people use on a daily basis.

Head of the River

Head of the River regatta is on this weekend. Many students and their coaches have been putting in numerous hours of training in preparation for this event. Every best wish to students, coaches and parents for the two day Regatta.

Musical Tickets Now On Sale

Tickets are now on sale from the College office for the ‘The Addams Family’ College Musical. We expect that the Friday and Saturday night shows will sell out by the end of today, however there are still seats available for Thursday 9 June and it would be great to have a sell out for opening night. All performances commence at 7:00pm in the Performing Arts Precinct. To make the night even more fun, come dressed up in your favourite Addams Family outfit.

Quiet Achiever

Our Quiet Achiever for this week is Matthew Capuzzo, Year 9, Rice.

At auditions at the end of 2015, then in Year 8, Matthew won the role of Pugsly - one of the lead roles in the College Musical, The Addams Family, which opens on June 9 in the Performing Arts Precinct. Matthew has fulfilled a tremendous commitment since his selection, attending rehearsals every Thursday since the beginning of the school year, including many Sundays as well. When he isn’t rehearsing his own part, Matthew readily volunteers to assist with backstage and props preparation. He has proven himself a valued member of the Addams Family Musical team.

Past Student Visit

On Friday 20 May, Mr Kurt Dempsey, from Michaels Real Estate, came in to help our Year 12 Pre-Vocational Mathematics classes learn about real estate. Kurt was a past College Captain here at Shalom in 2010 and since leaving has chosen a career in real estate in the Bundaberg area. Kurt was able to share information with the students in regards to buying and selling real estate as well as discussing his career. The students found the session to be insightful and it assisted them with a number of questions they had regarding their current term’s content.

Kurt willingly gave up his time to put together a presentation and chat to the students. It is great to see a former student succeeding and being so eager to share his knowledge with our current students. Thank you again Kurt for giving back to the College.

Table Tennis State Qualifiers

Five teams competed at the Bundaberg Schools Table Tennis Competition on Saturday 21 May.

The Shalom students received commendation from players, coaches, parents and staff for their excellent standard of play and sportsmanship throughout the day.

Ciaran Ryan and Nicholas Whitelum won their third Division final after narrowly defeating another Shalom team, Allen Preshy and Jayden Buchanan, in the Semi-finals.

The remaining three teams placed first or second in their age group and will progress to the State Finals at the end of Term Two. This includes:

Timothy Harris and Patrick Harris - Open Boys Champions
Brendan Connolly and Samuel Freeman - Junior Boys Runners-Up
Leah Scott and Walker Welsh - Open Girls Runners-Up

Congratulations to all teams and good luck at the State titles!

Miss Erin McHugh
Table Tennis Convenor

Head of the River

The Head of River Regatta is being held this Saturday 4 June and Sunday 5 June at Bucca Rowing Facility. Shalom’s rowers and coaches have spent many hours in preparation and are looking forward to finally getting into competition mode. Racing (heats) should start around midday Saturday and finish about 4:30pm. Sunday is all finals starting at around 7:30am with presentations at approximately 3:00pm. Shalom will have around 65 students participating and the total number across all schools should be close to 200. It promises to be a very exciting weekend, and should provide some good value for spectators. St Luke’s once again appear to be favourites (as reigning HOR champions), with some exceptional athletes in their squad, although all of the participating schools can now boast some outstanding individuals and crews. Shalom’s rowers will have to achieve some medal success in the senior age groups and also rely heavily on our juniors if we are hopeful of bringing the Head of River trophy back to Shalom. Rowing at Shalom simply wouldn’t happen without the support of parents and other volunteers, and their contribution can’t be underestimated in getting our rowers prepared for Head of River.

Sunday night we have our end of series celebration to be held at the Spotted Dog Tavern from 6pm.

This Tuesday 31 May will be our last meeting prior to the week end to finalise plans and start planning for our away regattas. All parents and supporters are asked to attend so that bookings can be made for those regattas.

Any rowers that haven't received their supporter pack, parents or supporters that were wanting shirts, caps or visors please let me know via email and I can see what sizes are left in our stocks.

Term 2 Interschool Chess Competition

Twelve members of the Shalom College Chess Club, who attended the second Wide Bay North Division interschool competition held at Walkervale State School on Tuesday 24 May (Week 7), were:

Team 1: Patrick Harris, Courtenay Parfitt, Allen Preshy and Bryce Samuels-Rosser.

Team 2: Josef Baumgartner, Jayden Buchanan, Keagan Geyer and Nicholas Whitelum.

Team 3: Chelsea Andrewartha, Demetri De Florian, Lachlan McIntosh and Abhash Pathak.

There were a total of 110 players in both Primary and Secondary divisions, with students up to and including Year 12 being eligible to compete.

Our players from Years 7 to 10 all performed to the best of their ability, with Bryce Samuels-Rosser again being the overall individual winner of the High School division. Bryce was undefeated on the day, with a total score of 8 points from his eight matches. Courtenay Parfitt came second overall with a total of 6 ½ points, closely followed by both Patrick Harris and Allen Preshy, who each won six games.

The Shalom first team was also a convincing winner of the High School Teams Division, achieving a total of 26 ½ points from a possible 32, and retained their title from the previous competition in Term 1. Both of our other teams performed well, with the second team achieving an overall score of 14, and the players in Team 3 each winning 4 games, for a total of 16 points.

The students all displayed a high level of sportsmanship and were excellent ambassadors for our school. We wish them continued success at the next Interschool Competition to be held in Week 5 of Term 3. Anyone wishing to join the Shalom Chess Club is welcome to attend of a Tuesday lunchtime in room SS2 (Hogan 7), at the back of the Student Services building.
