Principal’s Reflection
Our College Captains, Theodor Delaney and Meghan Anderson, were the architects behind a week of activities to raise awareness for Sustainable Development Goals: a set of 17 aims for the world to achieve by 2030 set up by the United Nations. They hoped that it would start a conversation amongst the students about global problems and how the students could address them.
Each day commenced with a prayer that focused on the theme for that day.
The themes and activities were:
Poverty
Activity
- Students were asked to find out how many people live in poverty around the world (over 3 billion)
- They could collect a reward when they found the answer.
Gender Equality
Activity
- Photo booth, where students could tell us what they want to achieve for gender equality.
- Photographs were submitted to the United Nations.
Environmental Preservation
Activity
- Picnic held in a beautiful garden area at the school, to show appreciation for the natural environment.
Education
Activity
- Students could write a letter to a teacher to show gratitude.
Peace
Activity
- Students received a peace symbol on their hands.
At the last College assembly, Mr Clem Campbell, the President of the United Nations Association of Queensland and past state member for Bundaberg was a guest speaker. His daughters both attended Shalom. Along with addressing our students he also kindly donated a United Nations Global Citizenship membership to the school which gives us access to great educational resources and includes a United Nations Flag.
Our students are very involved in a variety of social justice projects where they raise funds for very worthwhile charities not only those overseas who so desperately need support but also local charities and organisations.
We as a College support Edmund Rice Camps, Cambodia trip, St Vincent de Paul, Caritas, ‘Vinnies Sleep out’, Project Compassion, Red Shield Appeal, Relay for Life and Drought Relief.
Through a variety of activities such as lamington drives, car washes, trivia nights, raffles and touch football competitions to list just a few, the students raise funds for their House’s chosen charity. For example, one House supports an 11 year old boy through Mission in Action, Kenya. They also support Umoja Children’s Home Kenya which is run by Bundaberg local, Cathy Booth. Another House supports the Street Retreat Van through Impact (local): The drought stricken farmers are not forgotten where funds have been raised and forwarded to those very deserving communities: Local organisations such as Carinbundi and Phoenix House are also recipients of support, as well as places in East Africa sponsoring orphanages and education.
Our students are very aware of the story of both Edmund Rice and Catherine McAuley and as such are more than willing participants in these very important and vital projects to those less fortunate not only overseas but also in our local community.
Congratulations to Lauren Blackwell
Lauren has been accepted into the QUT Vice-Chancellor’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) Camp. Lauren will join a select group of high achieving students from around Queensland on a five-day camp that will provide them with engaging and inspirational research experiences in the above fields. Lauren will get a taste of university life and work with other Year 11 students, as well as academics and QUT students, in an intensive and hands-on research project.
‘Plays of the Day’
The following are worth sharing ….
- Mrs Sue Kendall - Sue recently participated in the State Masters Hockey Championships. She was awarded ‘Player of the Grand Final’ and was selected for the Queensland Masters Women's Hockey team.
- The Year 11 Certificate III students for the wonderful work they did with assistance at the Inter-School Athletics Carnival: we are very proud of the way in which you worked on both days.
- It is very hard to commence at a new school midyear. Two students in Year 8, different classes - Katrina and Xavier - are being acknowledged for going out of their way to make new students in their class very welcome...they have done this without being asked…wonderful news.
- Meghan Anderson and Theodor Delaney for being the driving force behind the Sustainability Week. There were others Seniors involved as well… so thank you to all.
- William Stewart - hard work and determination over the two days at the Bundaberg District Track and Field Carnival.
- Briege Taske, Caileb Dimes, Cooper Burns, Natika Breuer who were willing to participate in extra events at the Carnival.
- Nathan Donaldson - has automatically qualified for the State Championships with his times from the two-day Carnival in four of his five events.
- Molly Dawson, Darcy Cameron - determination to compete in the Carnival for the school even with injury or illness.
- Three age champions at the District Carnival: Ruby-ann Tobin (14 years girls), Nash Kuorikoski (16 years boys) and Benjamin Mingin (Open boys).
- The 15 years’ boys relay team - great comradery at the end of their race.
Girls’ Uniform
A reminder to parents of Year 9 girls that the Dress that is currently worn can be continued into Year 10 to 12. The girls from Years 10 to 12 will have the option of the Dress currently worn in Year 9 or the Blouse, Skirt and Tie currently worn by girls in Years 10 to 12. The Dress costs $65.00 and the Blouse, Skirt and Tie is $117.00.
Shalom Day
Shalom Day is on Tuesday August 9. We hope that all grandparents will be able to attend but I did want to emphasise that parents are also most welcome. The day is in three parts if parents wanted to just attend part of the day (full program of the day is under the Mission heading):
9am to 10:15am - Liturgy for Shalom Day
10:55am to 12:00pm - ‘Shalom’s Got Talent’
1:50pm to 3:00pm - Interhouse Dance Competition
These are all wonderful events in their own right. Please come along for the day or any part that suits. All the action will be in the Sports Centre.
Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability
Attached is a letter for all parents and carers of students in our College to inform you of our participation in the 2016 Data Collection for Students with Disability.
Please read the letter, there is a section to fill out should you NOT wish to give consent to the collection of data for your child. This will need to be completed and returned to the College by Wednesday 3 August.
I really do hope that many of you are able to attend Shalom Day - you will enjoy it!

Acting Principal
Academic Awards Evening
Our Academic Awards Evening for 2016 will be held on Monday 24 October in the Shalom College Sports Centre.
Academic awards to be presented on this night include:
- Subject Prizes
- Academic Excellence Awards
- Studentship Awards
- Special Awards
Most awards are determined using results up to the end of Term 3.
Academic Excellence Awards
Academic Excellence Awards are allocated to students in each year level who have achieved a pre-determined number of ‘A’ standards across the subjects they have studied for the year to the end of Term 3. To be eligible for an Academic Excellence Award the following criteria must be met:
- Year 7, 8 and 9 students must achieve an ‘A’ in at least one of the four core subjects, and at least six altogether
- Year 10 students must achieve an ‘A’ in at least one of the four core subjects, and at least five altogether
- Year 11 and 12 students must achieve at least four VHA’s across their subjects
Studentship Awards
Studentship Awards acknowledge students who have been consistently diligent in their approach to academic studies; who have been active participants in class and who have completed all tasks to the best of their ability.
Studentship Awards are allocated on the basis of a quantum of nominations received from class teachers. In making their nominations, teachers are asked to specifically identify students who have demonstrated:
- consistently high academic effort in class throughout the year
- consistently high application to study and homework
- an excellent attitude to learning
A Studentship Award is not an acknowledgement of good behaviour; it is an award that recognises and promotes individual academic excellence.
Subject Prizes
Subject Prizes are only awarded to students in Years 10 to 12.
All subject prizes for students in Years 10 to 12 are determined by the respective Learning Area Coordinators in consultation with subject teachers.
Special Awards
Special awards include the ‘All Rounder’ Awards (one boy and one girl from each of Years 7, 8 and 9), sponsored awards including the ADF Leadership and Teamwork Awards (Years 10 and 12); the EH & FC Churchward Sugar Cane Technology Award (Year 10); the EH & FC Churchward Sugar Industry Bursary (Year 12); the Ahern Family Bursary (Year 12); the Service to School and Community Award (Year 12); Gladstone Port Authority Bursary (Year 12); the Mayor's Medals (Year 12); the Principal's Award (Year 12) and Dux of the College (Year 12).
Special awards are determined by the Principal in consultation with the College Leadership Team and academic and pastoral coordinators as appropriate.
Parents of all students who are receiving awards this year will be notified during Week 3 of Term 4.
If you have any questions about the Academic Awards Evening or the process of Award selection, please direct them to the Assistant Principal, Mr Robin Wust.

The order and payment instructions to students and parents can be found on the envelopes. Spare envelopes for new enrolments can be collected directly from Student Reception.
IMPORTANT: Every student must present their envelope directly to the photographers on photo day, even if not purchasing a photo. These photos will also be used for College Student ID Cards.
If you would like a photo of siblings together (that are currently enrolled at Shalom) you may order a ‘Family photo’. These order envelopes are to be collected directly from our Front Office.
Photo catch up day (for any absent students) will be held on Friday 26 August.
Orders can be made directly with Academy Photography up to four weeks after photo day without incurring a late fee.
Curriculum Notes
Subject Selections for Year 11 - 2017
Parents of Year 10 students are reminded that subject selections for Year 11 - 2017 are to be made online by today Monday 1 August. All Year 10 students were sent the login details/links via their school email account again on Wednesday last week. Please contact Ms Katherine Nelson nelsonk@shalomcollege.com if your child is experiencing problems with logging in or using WebChoices to select subjects.
Please note that these selections may be changed following the SET Plan interview if necessary.
Additional Costs for Senior Subjects in 2017
All stationery requirements and additional costs for subjects offered from 2017 are listed on the second last page of the Senior Subject Selection Guide - 2017. This page is also reproduced separately on the College website ‘Curriculum’ tab; ‘Senior School’ tab; ‘Forms & Publications’ tab. It is important that students and parents check this information before selecting subjects as some subjects have significant additional costs, particularly subjects that deliver Certificate III courses.
Year 10 SET Plan Interviews
SET Plan interview appointments will be issued to all Year 10 students later this week. These interviews will be conducted from Monday 8 to Friday 19 August during school time. In preparation for the interviews students have been asked to complete their SET Plan forms to bring along to the interview along with their WebChoices online subject selection receipt. Spare copies of SET Plan forms are available from the College office and resources to assist students in completing their SET Plans are available on the Intranet under the ‘Year 10 Personal Futures Resources’ tab.
While parents are welcome and encouraged to attend the SET Plan interviews, the scheduled appointment times will only be changed in response to student absences, class assessments and school excursions. Students will be advised to contact the interviewer to arrange an alternative appointment where clashes of this nature occur. Following the interview parents will be required to confirm the SET Plan (including the subject selection for Year 11 2017) by signing the form, along with their child. Parents are welcome to seek follow-up interviews with appropriate teachers if required prior to confirming the SET Plan. Completed SET Plans must be returned by Friday 2 September 2016.
Year 10 students who will not be returning to Shalom in 2017 are still required to complete a SET Plan and attend an interview. However, in this case, students complete the first two pages of the SET Plan and tick Section C Item 4.1 which indicates the student is not returning. Parents then confirm this decision by countersigning the form and arranging for its return by Friday 2 September 2016.
If you have any queries or concerns regarding the SET Plan or SET Plan interview, please contact me on 4155 8113 or via email (see below).

Quiet Achiever
Our Quiet Achiever for this week is Harry Packwood, Year 8 Chisholm.

With a large smile and positive outlook, he is wonderful to have around. Most fittingly, he recently helped Chisholm win the Athletics Carnival by participating in every event available to him. With his fantastic attitude, Harry leads by example.

- Tamworth Junior Academy Graduate
- Senior Gympie Music Muster Talent Quest finalist

Shalom finished with three Age Champions for the carnival. Ruby-ann Tobin (14 years Female), Nash Kuorikoski (16 years Male) and Benjamin Mingin (Open Male) were standouts in their Age Divisions.
