Principal’s Reflection

I was reading about ways to create success in education recently when I came across these thoughts (from the University of Kent in England). I thought that I would share them with you.

There is a link between a person’s outlook and their academic performance. It is interesting to note how a positive state of mind is a starting point for success.

The first quality which a student needs to exhibit is initiative. This will be seen in a variety of ways.

Use initiative to act on opportunities. Become a leader before other people view you as one. Healthy organisations reward those who take the lead, not just those with formal management roles.

Take responsibility for own objectives: set priorities. Show enthusiasm: this will be noticed and you will eventually be rewarded. Take ownership of problems: anticipate potential problems, take pre-emptive action and act quickly to resolve problems.

To lack initiative is likely to result in a person becoming a negative performer. Such thinking is always counterproductive to achievement. Negative performers are content to leave performance at existing levels: show little interest in developing their skills further. Disown responsibility for their own tasks. Distance themselves from responsibility for the team's performance. Give up in the face of obstacles and don’t demonstrate a sense of personal responsibility for delivery. Take a narrow focus, making decisions in the interest of their own team or self.

The challenge is clear. It can be quite easy to default to negative ways of thinking. During such times it is important to be able to reset our bearings, so that we regain our positive focus. We must work actively to regain this positivity. Cultivate a ‘can do’ approach. Take greater responsibility for your decisions and actions. Don't pull yourself down: focus on what you can do rather than what you can't. Don't say anything to yourself that you wouldn't say to anyone else. Use positive language: praise and show appreciation of others. Take regular exercise: this will release endorphins - brain chemicals which make you feel good. 80% of the things that we worry about never happen and most of those that do we learn how to cope with. Worry is about the future, not the present. When a problem arrives we learn to cope with it.

Whilst it’s all very logical, it isn’t always attainable. Nevertheless, if we remain conscious of our need to operate from this mindset, we maximise our chances of success.

Absences

If your child is absent from the College, may I ask that you write a note in their Record Book on the first day of their return as way of explanation. I would encourage you to use the student absentee line in the first instance to advise the school of your child’s absence but a written note is still required.

Absentee Line: 4155 8181 - Leave a clear message with your name, students name, year level and day/s they are absent.

Punctuality

May I remind everyone that it is important that your child is on time for school each day. If there is a reason that they are running late, a note of explanation written in the Record Book would be much appreciated. As an example, I have one student who has been late to school on five occasions this term and has been absent for three days. This is an area that I feel really needs addressing.

Uniform

As many of you would know the blue jacket that has become very popular of late is no longer available. The students need to wear the jumper (or the blue jacket should they already own one). The Year 12 students are permitted to wear the senior jacket but not the jersey with their formal uniform. Those students who purchased the black jackets to wear to Confraternity this year may also wear these jackets to school. A number of students purchased the track suit top which is black with a red collar - the convenor in the uniform shop assures me that when students were purchasing these they were informed, as it is part of the College tracksuit, it should not be worn to school with the formal uniform. Unfortunately, a number of students are now wearing these jackets as part of their formal uniform.

Please be advised that in 2017 and onwards these jackets (the black with red collar tracksuit top) will not be permitted to be worn.

Girls’ Uniform

A reminder to parents of Year 9 girls that the Dress that is currently worn can be continued into Year 10 to 12. The girls from Year 10 to 12 will have the option of the Dress currently worn in Year 9 or the Blouse, Skirt and Tie currently worn by girls in Year 10 to 12. The dress costs $65.00 and the Blouse, Skirt and Tie is $117.00.

Guest Speaker

On Monday 15 August our Year 8s and Year 9s will attend an eSafety presentation here at the College; this has been organised through (Federal Member) Keith Pitt’s office.

Curriculum Notes

Selecting subjects for Years 9 and 10 in 2017

During the remainder of this term, we will be spending some time preparing Year 8 students for entry into Year 9 and Year 9 students into Year 10 in 2017. As part of this process, an information evening has been scheduled for Tuesday 23 August in the Performing Arts Precinct Theatre. The evening will commence at 6:00pm for parents of current Year 9 students and 7:00pm for parents of current Year 8 students.

The program for the evening will include a brief introduction to further study at Shalom College followed by the opportunity to meet and talk with individual teachers. Specifically, the evening will focus on issues related to the transition from Year 8 into Year 9 and Year 9 into Year 10 and will include elective module selection information. This is the first time that Year 8 students and parents are confronted with a degree of choice about subjects and pathways for future study. For Year 9 students and parents the evening will focus on issues related to the transition from the Middle School to the Senior School in Year 10.

Learning area coordinators and teachers will be available during the evening to answer specific questions.

An electronic version of the Middle School Subject Selection Booklet 2017 that provides a brief overview of the curriculum to be offered at Shalom College next year will be published on the College website http://www.shalomcollege.com/ and the intranet in coming weeks. The booklet includes basic subject information, a course planner, a stationery list for 2017 and offline subject selection forms. Most students will select their subjects for 2017 online using the WebChoices Student Portal.

I encourage all parents of Year 8 and 9 students to attend this important evening and look forward to meeting with you.

Year 10 SET Plans Interviews

SET Plan interview appointments were issued to all Year 10 students last week through PC. Most of these interviews will be conducted from Monday 8 to Friday 19 August. In preparation for the interviews students have been asked to complete their SET Plan forms to bring along to the interview along with their WebChoices online subject selection receipt. Spare copies of SET Plan forms are available from the College office. Resources to assist parents and students in completing SET Plans are available on the Intranet under the ‘Year 10 Personal Futures Resources’ tab.

Year 10 students who will not be returning to Shalom in 2017 are still required to complete a SET Plan and attend an interview.

Completed SET Plans must be returned by Friday 2 September 2016.

Issue of Year 7 and 9 NAPLAN reports

All Year 7 and 9 2016 NAPLAN reports will be mailed to parents this week. If you have not received the report for your child by the end of next week (allowing for slower mail delivery times) please contact the College office. If you have any specific concerns arising from the report, please contact the Middle School Coordinator, Mrs Megan Munckton megan_munckton@shalomcollege.com or me or alternatively phone the College.

P & F Committee

P & F Monthly Meeting Notes

At our monthly meeting on Tuesday 2 August the committee was pleased to announce that they had taken possession of a new coffee machine for use at the Sunday Markets canteen. This will become operational shortly once training has been completed. This means now the canteen will offer a selection of freshly made coffees to our market customers. The committee has donated funds towards: the upgrade and repair of the digital sign at end of carpark; and the purchase of gifts for the 2016 Graduating Senior Students which will be handed out at the Graduation Liturgy. Repair and replacement of the blue upholstered chairs in the under covered area has begun and will continue until all have been completed.

In the Principal’s report Elizabeth Austin-Campbell outlined that the college will undertake the School Renewal and Improvement process this week which will take place over three days. She also highlighted that the College had many students competing in the Eisteddfod that was held last week. Additionally, the college will have students and staff heading to Brisbane to attend the annual Catholic Music Festival.

The Rowing Committee reported that the new Sykes Junior Double Skull purchased by the P & F has now arrived. A decision will be made on the naming of this skull shortly. The committee recently purchased two marquees with ‘Shalom Rowing’ printed on them. These are to be utilised by the rowing teams and will be made available to the college for use at other events. The Central Queensland Regatta will be held at Bucca on 17 and 18 September. Due to a last minute change in location Shalom had to withdraw from the South East Queensland Regatta which was disappointing for all our teams.

For further information, the full meeting minutes are available on the P & F web page via the College website. Please forward any comments to the Secretary via email at pandf@shalomcollege.com. If you have an agenda item, please address it to the P & F Secretary either at the school office or by email pandf@shalomcollege.com.

To all P & F Members you are reminded that our monthly meeting is held in the staff common room on the first Tuesday of the month, all parents are welcome. Please note the next P & F meeting will be held on Tuesday 6 September at 5:30pm.

Mrs Gail Norris
P & F Secretary

Sakado visit 2016

Japanese

Over the last two weeks Shalom has been involved in a cultural exchange with the students and teachers from Sakado High School in Saitama Japan. Sakado is an English speciality school where students travel far distances to attend.

I would like to take this opportunity to extend my thanks to all who made this experience the great success it was. Our two schools have formed a strong bond and the exchange in language and culture is of great benefit to Shalom’s Japanese students and the students of Sakado.

The group were welcomed by excited host families on Monday 25 July. This year’s program included a number of joint classes with Shalom students where the Japanese students developed a greater understanding of Australia and Australian customs through conversation classes, a cross cultural understanding class and an Australian English class run by Mrs Bath. Other highlights included a welcome BBQ on Thursday 28 July at Elliott Heads where we all enjoyed the sun set and went on to star gaze.

After a week of home staying with Shalom families, the Sakado group had gained greater confidence in their English speaking ability and insight into Australian culture and lifestyle, while forming some very close friendships.

After a teary farewell last Tuesday morning, the Sakado students took home with them many cherished memories of their visit to Shalom. This international exchange is an integral part of LOTE at Shalom and is not possible without the generosity of Shalom families, staff and students. After hearing the many positive testimonies from the Japanese visitors, students, teachers and host families, I believe the visit has been a memorable and enjoyable experience for all.

InspireU Camp

Last Tuesday afternoon Sid Domic and Belle Sanewski from The University of Queensland held an information session for ATSI students who attended the 2015 InspireU camp in the December school holidays at Chaverim. Selected Year 7 Shalom students alongside students from other schools around the State attended the camp.

InspireU camps are a series of free residential camps for ATSI students interested in university studies, it is open for students from Year 9 to 12.

These camps are an awesome opportunity for students to experience university life, attend lectures and workshops on campus and explore different subjects and career areas.

Camps on offer throughout the year are Business and Law, Health and Engineering and are available in Junior (Year 9 and 10) or Senior camps (Year 11 and 12). These will be advertised through the notices and also emailed to students and parents when they are available.

Thank you to Sid and Belle as it was a very informative session and the students came away with inspiration and motivation to pave their pathway into university.

Open Boys

Shalom B played very well going down narrowly to Bundaberg Christian College 32-28. The boys are starting to play well and working as a team. Their second game of the night was a much closer effort managing a draw with Bundaberg State High School B 37-37.

Shalom A won both their games with ease, first they beat ISIS 50-43 and backed that up in the second game downing Bundaberg State High School A 51-39. Shalom A’s unbeaten streak will be making them a certainty come finals.

Shalom U15

Shalom U15 Boys were very depleted with four players away at Queensland Under 15 trials and a number of other players unavailable. Thanks to Jaxon Christensen and Alistair Pappalardo for backing up from the Under 13 game. With only four players, Shalom still managed a well-earned victory over Bundaberg State High School 64-57. Harrison Doyle once again was top scorer, ably assisted by Patrick Johnson.
