Principal's Reflection

Dr Tim Hawkes OAM is one of Australia's best known educators; he has been a headmaster for over 25 years and is currently Headmaster of The King's School, Parramatta, in Sydney.

In an interview in the Sun Herald with Catherine Lambert on June 25 2016, Dr Hawkes says that "many fathers spend less than 20 seconds a day talking to their teenage sons." He asserts that fathers are "being trumped by the cyber world and children's friends when it comes to role models." Dr Hawkes goes on to say that kids are spending, on average, two to five hours a day online, so the raising of our sons and daughters is not by parents but peers and social networking sites."

"We have to lift our game as parents and recover ownership of our children and to recover the role of parenting our children rather than leaving it to the cyber world, their friends and to their school," he says. Dr Hawkes goes on to state that one of the greatest gifts a parent can give their child is time. Having daily conversations with your child has to be made a priority.

Ten conversations he suggests that you should have with your child:

  1. Tell them they are loved.
  2. Tell them who they are, their strengths, virtues, history and inheritance.
  3. Tell them what they stand for.
  4. Teach them to accept responsibility. It's not sufficient to watch.
  5. Teach them how to live in a community.
  6. Teach them the value of hard work and patience.
  7. Teach sons to be tender and respectful lovers.
  8. Teach them to manage their finances.
  9. Teach them to manage their health.
  10. Teach them resilience, that life is not all fun and success.

Because Dr Hawkes' background is in boys' education, his rhetoric is around fathers and sons but I do believe that any of the above would apply to daughters as well. It is never a waste of time spending time, and talking, with your kids.

Absences

If your child is absent from the College, may I ask that you write a note in their Record Book on the first day of their return as way of explanation. I would encourage you to use the student absentee line in the first instance to advise the school of your child's absence but a written note is still required.

Absentee Line: 4155 8181 - Leave a clear message with your name, students name, year level and day/s they are absent.

Punctuality

May I remind everyone that it is important that your child is on time for school each day. If there is a reason that they are running late, a note of explanation written in the Record Book would be much appreciated. This is an area that I feel really needs addressing.

Uniform

As many of you would know the blue jacket that has become very popular of late is no longer available. The students need to wear the jumper (or the blue jacket should they own one). The Year 12 students are permitted to wear the senior jacket but not the jersey with their formal uniform. Those students who purchased the black jackets to wear to Confraternity this year may also wear these jackets to school. A number of students purchased the track suit top which is black with a red collar - the convenor in the uniform shop assures me that when students were purchasing these they were informed, as it is part of the College tracksuit, it should not be worn to school with the formal uniform. Unfortunately, a number of students are now wearing these jackets as part of their formal uniform.

Please be advised that in 2017 and onwards these jackets (the black with red collar tracksuit top) will not be permitted to be worn.

Girls' Uniform

A reminder to parents of Year 9 girls that the Dress that is currently worn can be continued into Year 10 to 12. The girls from Year 10 to 12 will have the option of the Dress currently worn in Year 9 or the Blouse, Skirt and Tie currently worn by girls in Year 10 to 12. The dress costs $65 and the Blouse, Skirt and Tie is $117.

'Plays of the Day'

Congratulations to:

  • Aimee Harvey (Year 11) - new Ladies Golf Champion: score of 252, nine strokes in front of her nearest rival, Isabella Artcheua (Year 9), both juniors.

  • In the individual events, Patrick Harris and Bryce Samuels-Rosser tied for first in the secondary competition.

  • Shalom 1 won the bronze medal game 16-14 in the third set after losing the first set and being down 9-2 in the third. The boys showed real character and had a much deserved win.

Selecting subjects for Years 9 and 10 in 2017

A subject selection information evening for parents of students and students going into Years 9 or 10 in 2017 has been scheduled for next Tuesday 23 August 2016 in the Performing Arts Precinct theatre. The evening will commence at 6:00pm for parents of current Year 9 students and 7:00pm for parents of current Year 8 students.

The program for the evening will include a brief introduction to further study at Shalom College followed by the opportunity to meet and talk with individual teachers. Specifically, the evening will focus on issues related to the transition from Year 8 into Year 9 and Year 9 into Year 10 and will include elective module selection information. This is the first time that Year 8 students and parents are confronted with a degree of choice about subjects and pathways for future study. For Year 9 students and parents, the evening will focus on issues related to the transition from the Middle School to the Senior School in Year 10.

Learning area coordinators and teachers will be available during the evening to answer specific questions.

An electronic version of the Middle School Subject Selection Booklet 2017 that provides a brief overview of the curriculum to be offered at Shalom College next year has been published on the College website. To access this go to the link below and then login to the Intranet. The booklet is found under the 'Year 8 into 9 and 9 into 10 Subject Selection Information' tab. The guide includes basic subject information, a course planner, a stationery list for 2017 and offline subject selection forms. Most students will select their subjects for 2017 online using the WebChoices Student Portal. Subject choices (printed and signed WebChoices receipt) must be submitted by Monday 29 August.

I encourage all parents of Year 8 and 9 students to attend this important evening and look forward to meeting with you.

Shalom Day Success

What a wonderful day it was on Tuesday with many parents and grandparents coming along to share Shalom Day with us.

Shalom's Got Talent certainly produced talent this year with the judge's finding it difficult to separate the wonderful array of performances. In the end Madison Test took out People's Choice Award with a beautiful rendition of Lauren Aquilina's 'King'. The Shalom's Got Talent winner for 2016 went to a very deserving Sophia Burfitt and her lovely assistant Molly. This funny and engaging performance was I believe enjoyed by all. Congratulations to Sophia and Madison and thank you to all the performers who put themselves out there, you were all winners!

Shalom Day House Dance Off

The winner for the 2016 House Dance was awarded to MacKillop House. Second went Hogan House and third went to Adams House.

Congratulations to all MacKillop House students and staff. All eight House's put in an awesome effort and are to be congratulated on their House spirit and contributing to the wonderful culture that makes Shalom College a great school.

Quiet Achiever

McAuley House has been very busy embracing 'The Year of Mercy' within our House, our lives and the school community. We are proudly wearing our Mercy badges to remind us of our House motto. There are many students in the House who have been quietly performing little acts of Mercy in their daily lives but we feel we need to acknowledge two quiet achievers in particular who spread Mercy amongst the students, staff and McAuley House members constantly. These two members are our House Leaders Samuel McMah and Juliet Newby. Sam and Juliet have followed the example of the Father through their words, actions, care, support, forgiveness and love they have shown so often and to so many throughout this year. They have made sure that the strength of Mercy flows through McAuley.

Term 3 Interschool Chess Competition

Twelve members of the Shalom College Chess Club, who attended the third Wide Bay North Division Interschool Competition held at Walkervale State School on Tuesday 9 August (Week 5), were: -

Team 1: Timothy Harris, Patrick Harris, Bryce Samuels-Rosser and Courtenay Parfitt.
Team 2: Allen Preshy, Demetri De Florian, Keagan Geyer and Abhash Pathak.
Team 3: Jayden Buchanan, Lachlan McIntosh, Chelsea Andrewartha and Curtis Amies.

Our Chess players from Years 7 to 10 performed to the best of their ability, with all of our Team 1 members remaining undefeated throughout the day. Bryce Samuels-Rosser and Patrick Harris were both recognised as overall individual winners of the High School Division on count-back, with Courtenay Parfitt coming a close third, despite winning all of his 8 matches. Tim Harris also played well, winning seven of his games and drawing the eighth against Shalom Team 2 member, Allen Preshy.

Shalom Team 1 was a convincing winner of the High School Teams Division, achieving a total of 31½ points from a possible 32, and were also awarded the Perpetual Trophy as the 2016 Highest Scoring School in the Wide Bay North Secondary Division. Shalom College has also won the right to enter a team to contest the Queensland Secondary School Chess Championships to be held in Brisbane on the weekend of 15 and 16 October.

Both of our other teams performed well, with most of our students either winning or drawing the majority of their games. The students all displayed a high level of sportsmanship and were excellent ambassadors for our school.

We wish our Chess players continued success at the next local Interschool Competition being run by the Bundaberg Chess Club, to be held on Tuesday 25 October (Term 4 Week 4) at Across the Waves. Anyone wishing to join the Shalom Chess Club is welcome to attend each Tuesday lunchtime in room SS2 (Hogan 7), at the back of the Student Services building.

Tennis Qld Secondary School Team Tennis State Finals

On the Friday 5 August, Shalom entered two boys teams and one girls team to compete in the Regional Finals of the Queensland Secondary School Tennis Teams Competition at Rotary Park in Bundaberg. Shalom did exceptionally well on the day with one of the boys teams winning their division to qualify for the State Finals.

It has been a number of years since Shalom has entered a girls team in this event so it was very exciting to finally have the numbers and we were well represented by Naomi Jarman, Caya Akasaka-Marshall, Abby McMillan, Ciarne Tanna and Brigid Ryan. The girls played some good matches, led by some exceptional tennis by the talented Naomi Jarman, but eventually lost to a strong team from Hervey Bay State High School to finish runner-up. This is a young team with three Year 7 girls, one Year 8 and one Year 10 girl, all of which hit the ball well. As this is an Open event, these girls have plenty of years left in this competition and are sure to produce some good results in years to come.

In the boys division, Shalom entered two teams - an 'older' Shalom Black team and a younger Shalom Red team. Shalom Red, which consisted of Brendan Ryan, Max Thomson, Mitchell Fraser, Darcy Cameron and Bayley Herwig, revealed their potential and that they will be a force in years to come. Each of these players displayed some excellent shot-making against older and more experienced opponents and will be better for this experience. Overall Shalom Red finished third - an impressive result.

Shalom Black have a core of players who have won the Regional Finals in previous years and were hoping to continue their winning streak. Kelvin Pimm, Nathan Cook, Rory Delaney, Simon Rathbone and Isaac Coyne were clinical in their performance losing only one match in the entire day. Each year this team qualifies for the State Finals they perform better and this year will be no exception as the improvement shown by these players is significant. This team has no weak link and all the boys are playing some fantastic tennis.

Shalom is extremely fortunate at the moment to have a large pool of talented tennis players. If you would like to start or 'get back into' tennis, feel free to have a hit with us on Tuesday mornings from 7am to 8am. The more the merrier! If you have any questions, please email me.

Basketball Results

Open Boys

This week saw Shalom A play Shalom B, this game was a masterclass for the Shalom A team teaching the less experienced Shalom B valuable lessons on how to play basketball. Towards the end of the game it seemed that these lessons were working as Shalom B found a groove to hold on to the ball and have some good plays. Ultimately the Shalom A team won 47 vs 18.

Shalom B backed up then to play St Luke's. The boys registered their first win for the season, in a very close match Shalom B (39) vs St Luke's (36).

Under 15/ Under 13 boys

There was a distinct height advantage when the Shalom Under 15 boys played the Shalom Under 13 Boys in basketball on 10 August. Despite only having four players, the U15 team predictably dominated. Full credit to the U13 boys for their continued efforts, and to all players for displaying very good sportsmanship. Final score: Shalom (67) vs Shalom U13 (26)

Girls

Basketball U/15 A vs Shalom O

A blistering pace was set in the game by both teams, with plenty of action at both ends of the court making for great viewing. Despite this, a friendly comradery and sportsmanship was evident between the two teams throughout the game.

MVPs - Makayla Mortensen and Emma Moonie.

Football (Soccer)

U15 Boys Black defeated Kepnock 7-1 (Week 3).
U15 Boys Black football defeated St Lukes 4-3 (Week 4).

Mr Stephen Chappel

Although the score line was close, Shalom dominated possession and territory for the majority of the match. The midfield and forwards created numerous opportunities with Declen Thatcher and Steven Borg showing some impressive skills. Joshua Mason was dominant in the midfield with some excellent positional play and scored a hat-trick of goals to give Shalom a win 3-2. MVP for the game was Joshua Mason.
