Principal’s Reflection

In the Gospel (Luke 14:1, 7 – 14) on Sunday 28 August, there is a strong challenge about social justice. In God’s eyes, everyone is equal. The Scribes and the Pharisees in the Gospel believed that they deserved preferential treatment because they kept God’s law; they presumed that they could occupy the seats of honour.

We can fall into this same trap if we think that being in the right entitles us to places of honour.

Being in the right occurs under God’s grace and not by our own merit or worthiness. Being in the right is for the benefit of others who, seeing our good works, are attracted to the Way of Jesus.

Thus the two parables in this Gospel are about the God who does not have favourites and the God who has a preference for “the poor, the crippled, the lame and the blind.”

“This Gospel reminds us that at Christ’s banquet, it’s not the poised and perfect who are most welcome but the vulnerable. God embraces those parts of us that are in greatest need of his love and healing – where we are poor, crippled, blind and lame.” (Leonard, R., 2006, Preaching to the Converted).

Congratulations

Mitchell and Lachlan Parnell

Lachlan and Mitchell recently competed for Australia in four events at the Karate Championships - Shotokan World Cup in South Africa, winning two Gold Medals and a Bronze Medal. They are doing Australia proud. Brock (older brother and Shalom Senior 2015) progressed through five rounds and placed 9th in the Open Men's competition. There are 44 countries represented at the Shotokan World Cup.

Nathan Donaldson

Competed in the Bridge to Brisbane - he was about to claim second place in the 10km race when he crashed.

Below are just some of the events and training that Nathan has been involved in.

  • January 2016 Australian Institute of Sport, Canberra (International Wheelchairs Competition and a Junior Mentoring Day with International Para Olympians)
  • February 2016 Queensland Junior Championships in Brisbane
  • February 2016 Queensland Open Championships also in Brisbane
  • March 2016 Australian Junior Championships in Perth. (Nathan competed in the 100m, 200m, 400m and 800m and won Bronze in the 200m and 800m).
  • April 2016 Australian Championships in Sydney
  • June 2016 Ring Road Race Bundaberg. Nathan came third but was the only junior racing. Last year he did the 10km in 01:01.33 and this year he did it in 33.57. That is 27 minutes faster than what he did last year.

Georgia Snare and Lauren Blackwell

These two students have been selected for the UQ Young Scholars Program 2016-2017, run by the University of Queensland.

Well-deserved congratulations to these young men and women.

Thank you

Thank you to Mr Christian Taylor for his organisation of the QCS Tests on Tuesday and Wednesday last week.

Thank you to Mrs O’Shea-Hard for her organisation of the Year 9 Reflection Days and the Year 10 Retreat Days. These days are an integral and important part of ‘what we do’ and ‘who we are’.

Curriculum Notes

Year 11 and 12 End of Term 3 Examination Timetable

End of Term 3 examinations are scheduled for Year 11 and 12 students from today Monday 5 September to Friday 9 September. The examination timetable has been posted on the College Intranet (‘Assessment and Reporting’ tab), the College Website (Curriculum/Senior School/Forms & Publications) and Daily Notices (pushed to students via Student Café). Most students will have at least one examination during the block, some will have quite a number depending on the subjects they study and how assessment is conducted in these subjects. Not all subjects use the examination block.

Attendance During Examinations

During the examination block all Year 11 and 12 students are deemed to be in attendance but they are only required at school to sit scheduled examinations or to complete supplementary assessments if required. When attending the College during examination blocks students must be in full and correct College day uniform. When not in attendance during the examination block students must be engaged in home study, assignment work, work experience or work placement activities - it is not ‘time off’.

Students who have few or no examinations scheduled during the examination block are expected to be engaged in organised Work Experience, Structured Workplace Learning related to VET studies or attendance at a workplace related to an established School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship. Please contact Mrs O’Donnell on 4155 8136 or at Liza_ODonnell@shalomcollege.com for more information about Work Experience, Structured Workplace Learning or School-based Apprenticeships or Traineeships.

Quiet Achiever

Our Quiet Achiever for this week is Sophia Burfitt, Year 12, McAuley.

Sophia is destined to achieve success with her dedication to the Performing Arts. In the June school holidays, Sophia worked in the Production Services Unit at Queensland Performing Arts Complex (QPAC) which involved working in Stage Management and Wardrobe and from this she was invited to assist with the Opera Queensland's show of ‘Barber in Seville’ at the Brolga Theatre, Maryborough. Sophia is a member of our school choir and debating club and recently won our ‘Shalom’s Got Talent’ with a superb dramatic performance. In the September school holidays, Sophia is traveling to Sydney to participate in a NIDA Drama program, industry workshops and a behind the scenes tour of the Opera House. Sophia recently received a Distinction for her studies through Trinity College, London and will complete her Grade 8 (Speech & Drama) exams in October. All this whilst completing her Year 12 QCE studies and being a member of our school choir, musical and debating club. Sophia is an exceptionally hard working student and we wish her all the best next year pursuing further studies in the Performing Arts industry. Inspiring Sophia. Well done!

QTAC Application and Bonus Points Information

QTAC Application Step-by-Step Guide

QTAC have released a comprehensive, step-by-step guide to creating your QTAC account and completing your applications/preferences. It has been saved to the Shalom Intranet under ‘Year 12 Information’ tab > ‘QTAC Application Process’.

Remember, your preferences should be entered and paid for BEFORE September 30 to ensure they are officially lodged (otherwise a late fee will be incurred). Other general information on QTAC applications is also under the same tab > ‘QTAC Presentation July 2016’.

Bonus QTAC Ranking Points

When considering your preferences, keep in mind you may be eligible for ‘Bonus Points’ which effectively increase your OP/QTAC ranking. This means you could apply for a degree that may be slightly above your predicted OP level. Griffith University and QUT in particular seem quite generous with their bonus points – Griffith: up to 6 points from a wide range of subjects / QUT: up to 8 points from a narrower range of subjects + also an Elite Athlete OP Bonus. In nearly all instances, bonus points will be applied automatically with your QTAC application.

Information on various Universities Bonus points are in links below:

Certificate III Business Students

Certificate III Business students were required to use their entrepreneurial skills to raise awareness and funds for a chosen charity. The students nominated the Foundation for Mental Health Awareness ‘R U OK?’ as their charity and were kept very busy preparing the business model, planning the event and finally selling smiley face cupcakes and stickers. We would say that their event was a success with many students throughout the College sporting smiley face stickers and an impressive $209.30 was raised. Congratulations Certificate III Business Students!

Lawn Bowls Results

Congratulations to all of the Shalom Lawn Bowls team members for displaying a high level of enthusiasm, sportsmanship and commitment to this year’s season. Many of our players were first time bowlers and quickly learnt the rules and format of the game. Of the twelve teams involved this year Shalom finished 1st, 2nd,5th,6th and 7th overall. One team consisting of Eden Stallard and Shaun Lane, also rookie bowlers, displayed a high level of ability as they made their way through the draw, often against more experienced opposition teams, to secure a place in the final against Shalom’s more experienced team of Matthew and Justin Todd. The final started with the Stallard/Lane combination excitedly winning the first end but the extremely high level of skill of the Todd team and their ability to bowl superbly under pressure resulted in a very convincing and well deserved overall win to them. Congratulations again to all of our teams and to our overall winners Matthew and Justin. Our team would like to extend their appreciation to the Burnett Bowls Club for the use of their bowls and greens and acknowledge the support of Mr Des Kemp, Burnett Bowls Club Junior Development Officer.

Shalom’s finalists - Eden Stallard, Shaun Lane, Matthew Todd and Justin Todd.

Ten Pin Bowling

Junior Ten Pin Bowling wrapped up with Finals Day on Wednesday 31 August. No competition on the day but lights out, music playing and a good time had by all. A big thank you to Lilianna Hass, Alex Bennett, Cody Schubel, Jordan Kenzler and Lydia Stewart for their great sportsmanship over the past seven weeks. Whilst Shalom did not win any prizes for the Junior Fixtures, we placed third overall for both Junior and Senior combined for 2016. Congratulations to all players.

Under 13’s Rugby League Show Heart

The Shalom Under 13’s Rugby League team played in the Grand Final of the Winter Sport competition and demonstrated how much they have improved over the course of the competition.

First Row (L to R): Cody Madden, Chelson Diggins, Jack Ellis, Ilamia Cattell, Addison Gill, Kynan Hard, Joshua Pole, Riley Coutts, Kyran Barrow, Sunny Beatson, Mr Neil Feather
Second Row (L to R): Ryan Mant, Heath Jacobs, Bradley Clarke, Nahum Pascoe, Hamish Young, James Waters, Liam Doyle, Caileb Dimes, Brynn Harrap
Absent: Harry Packwood, Kodi Neill, Mr Brendan Cunningham

Prior to the commencement of the season, the team had played three games, two against North Bundaberg High School and one against Bundaberg State High School. The outcome of those games was a narrow win in one of the games against North and two heavy losses: one each to North and Bundaberg SHS.

Therefore, entering the Winter Sport season with the first game against Bundaberg State High, the team had very little expectation of winning games; the focus was purely on skill development. After working very hard on those skills at training sessions, the team won their first game by two points (18-16) which proved to be a turning point for the young men as they went on to win their next five games, finishing as minor premiers of the competition.

The final game of the season saw the team encounter a very physical opposition who are the current Wide Bay champions, Kepnock SHS. As an added incentive for Kepnock, they were looking to reverse a twenty-point loss inflicted by Shalom in the round phase of the competition. Unfortunately, Kepnock started the better team, maintaining possession for the majority of the first half and beat Shalom in most aspects of the game to lead by twenty points at half time. Rather than being dejected at half time however, the players resolved to play the second half in the spirit of the majority of their season, with effort and commitment in the small areas of the game for their team mates. They won the second half (10-4) and demonstrated their vast improvements in skill and mental stability gained through commitment to each other throughout the season.

Each player on the roster displayed great commitment to the team throughout the season and represented themselves, their coaching staff and the school in the highest regard over the past eight weeks. The coaching staff Mr Cunningham and Mr Feather are extremely proud of their achievements, as I’m sure the wider school community will be after hearing of their exploits this term.

Proposed New York Performing Arts Tour 2017

An information evening will be held on Monday 12 September at 6:30pm in the Performing Arts Precinct Theatre for parents and students in Year 10, 11 and 12 (2017) who may be interested in participating in a Dance and Drama tour of New York during the September holidays in 2017. A similar tour ran in 2014 for Dance, and it has been decided that next year, this opportunity would be extended to include Drama workshops. Participating students would have to choose either Dance or Drama, as workshops will run concurrently during the tour.

This evening is purely a chance to explain the tour in terms of workshops, experiences and opportunities, as well as to gain an approximation of costing and the requirements for participation on the tour. There will be a presentation of the proposed itinerary, as well as time for questions. Expressions of Interest forms will also be given out on the evening. This opportunity is not limited to students studying either of these subjects in 2017, however, experience and ability in these disciplines is a requirement for participation on the tour.

Look forward to seeing you there!

Combined P&F Movie Night

Tickets are available for purchase from the Administration Office at the following schools: Shalom, St Patrick's, St Mary's and St Joseph’s. Please support the P&F, buy a ticket and come along to what promises to be a great night.

First Loyola Chapel Wedding

On Saturday 27 August, our very first wedding was held in the Loyola Chapel. Bobby and Stephanie Wedemeyer married in a lovely ceremony surrounded by family and friends with the stunning stain glass window as the backdrop.

It was fitting that the first wedding involved a family, the Wedemeyers who have such a long association not only with Shalom College, but with Catholic Education here in Bundaberg for three generations. Mother of the Groom Mrs Jenny Wedemeyer is Shalom’s Learning Area Coordinator -Senior English, Groom Bobby, along with his siblings Jonathon, Emily, Amy and Brother-in-law James Shoesmith all attended St Joseph’s and Shalom. Five of Amy’s six children attend either St Mary’s or Shalom and Jonathon also works in Catholic Education.

We are lucky to have such beautiful facilities to offer, but what makes Shalom wonderful is the people we have here, the families like the Wedemeyer family, who continue the Shalom traditions and values that others want to be a part of also.

Thank you to Good Shepherd Priest-in-Charge, Andrew Schmidt for the photo taken during Bobby and Stephanie’s wedding ceremony.
