Principal’s Reflection
I really like Andrew Denton as a media personality. He is clever and engaging. At the moment he is the very likeable face of the move to legalise euthanasia in Australia. It would seem that the Victorian Parliament is very close to passing legislation to that effect. Quite a few years ago I stood by my younger brother’s hospital bed watching him in the last stages of a battle with Cancer. He was in excruciating pain. If I had the capacity to gently end his life at that point, I almost certainly would have. Happily, Tim was able to access some excellent palliative care and he was able to have a very good two weeks sharing great memories with family and friends before going to his God peacefully. I am enormously grateful, in hindsight, that we didn’t have the opportunity to end his life earlier. This is a very emotive issue and I am very aware that my experience in this area is not everyone’s. I am very concerned though that we could become a society that does not place the utmost value on life. Advocates of euthanasia will acknowledge that, given advances in medicine, it is very rare that anyone should have to die in pain. It is such a shame that, as we discuss euthanasia, we are not giving as much energy to discussing how we can put more resource into providing better and more accessible palliative care. I hope that economics won’t influence this debate.
The quality of the society in which we live will be the most important legacy this generation will leave the next. It is also worrying that the most unsafe place for a child to be is in its mother’s womb. The issue of Abortion is just as emotive and difficult. Sadly, the provision of foetal termination is much more economic than providing the support that prospective mothers need who find themselves in difficult circumstances. Sadly, through continued and appallingly poor handling of child abuse, the Church I love has lost much of its moral authority and, consequently its voice, in this area. But the Churches have been consistent over hundreds of years in encouraging civil society to make sure that the preservation of life – at all times – is held sacrosanct. The legislation in front of parliament in Victoria is bringing the issue of life squarely into focus. Folks like Andrew Denton will make very well thought out and compelling arguments in favour of change. Paul Kelly, in last weekend’s ‘Weekend Australian’ wrote a piece opposing the euthanasia legislation that I thought was very well written. I have attached it here and, if you haven’t read it, would commend it to you as well worth consideration. He argues well that if we legalise euthanasia, a compassionate society might die as well.
Student Leaders 2017
I was very pleased to be able to present our College Student Leaders for 2017 on Assembly last Friday. The current Year 11 class, will, I have no doubt, be excellent leaders for the College next year. As a community, we rely on the Year 12 class to give the lead to the College in any given year. There are so many talented and generous young people in this group that I am very confident that they will offer excellent leadership next year. From that group, the following students have been chosen for designated leadership roles:
College Captains
Isabelle Matebau
Jordan McLaren
Adams
Erin Buckmaster
Anthony Altadonna

Catholic Education
Funding for Catholic Education is in the news again. As always, the truth of an issue is often lost in dramatic claims. It would seem that many people don’t understand why State Schools are called State Schools – they are funded by the relevant State. The Federal Government came into direct funding of schools comparatively late in the piece and started to fund Independent and Catholic schools. Funding needs to be fair and equitable. I have attached an article from Ross Fox who is the Director of National Catholic Education that gives some detail about this which might be useful if you are being queried by friends or colleagues about why your child’s school deserves any funding at all!
Proud of our Shalom Students
I am very proud of all of our Students who participated in activities over the holidays. The Students and Staff who travelled to Cambodia had an outstanding experience and, I’m sure, have come back with their world view somewhat altered. I was with about 30 of our Senior Students and Past Students who led the Edmund Rice Camp. I have never been more proud of our young people - they were amazing. I was very pleased to see a number of past and present students participate in the Ignite Catholic Youth Conference in Brisbane and two Year 11 students – Tara George and Ashleigh Pole – represented us at the Mercy Schools Conference in Sydney.
Attendance at school is really important. Being on time to school is really important. There will be reasons why students miss school for a day or might be late. I really hope that when those things happen, it is for a really good reason. We had a disappointingly high absentee rate during the last week of last term. When one parent was contacted by the office about an absence, our office staff were told by one parent that their child had told them that there was no school on that week!

Core Studies Parent/Teacher Interviews
The second of two opportunities this year for Year 7, 8 and 9 Core Studies Parent/Teacher Interviews is available on the Student Free Day, Monday 17 October. The aim of Parent/Teacher Interviews is to provide an opportunity for parents to meet with teachers to discuss the progress and learning needs of their children.
The online booking facility is currently open but will close at 3:00pm on Wednesday 12 October to allow teachers to prepare for interviews. After this time, parents may still contact the College administration staff during business hours on 4155 8111 to request changes (including cancelations) or seek additional interviews.
Interviews are for Year 7, 8 and 9 Core Studies only and will be held in the Sports Centre. All interviews are of ten minute duration and as Monday 17 October is a Student Free Day all Year 7, 8 and 9 students are encouraged to participate in the interview - your child’s progress is crucial to you and us, it is a significant benefit in this process if your child can be a part of the discussion.
Applications for change of subjects for 2017
We are currently not accepting any applications for subject changes for 2017. However, applications for changes will be accepted and considered from Monday 14 November. Reminders and an outline of the procedure will be posted in Daily Notices and the Newsletter closer to this time.
Current Year 8, 9 and 10 students may use the login details emailed last term to see (but not change) their selections for 2017 as originally entered in Edval webChoices. These login details can be re-sent to students from Monday 14 November if required – please contact Ms Nelson or the College office.
Year 12 OP Range Estimates
The latest update to OP range estimates will be distributed to all OP-eligible Year 12 students during PC on Tuesday 25 October. If you have any queries regarding your child’s OP range estimate or the processes involved, please contact me or Mr Maher.
QCE Literacy and Numeracy Requirements
We have fielded some queries from Year 12 students recently regarding the impact of “not passing” English or mathematics subjects on their eligibility for the award of an OP and/or a QCE. The OP and QCE are not the same and have different requirements, indeed students may receive one and not the other for a number of reasons.
To be eligible for an OP a student must have studied 20 semester units (the equivalent of five subjects over four semesters) and sat the QCS Test (or received exemption). Students who do not ‘pass’ English, mathematics or any other subject will still receive an OP if otherwise eligible. A ‘pass’ in these subjects is a Sound Level of Achievement which is generally equivalent to averaging C standards on assessments in the subject.
A QCE is awarded to a student who, in addition to achieving 20 credits in the required pattern of learning, has met the requirements for literacy and numeracy. Note the emphasis on, and difference between ‘studied’ and ‘achieving’ in each case.
Achieving 20 credits requires the student to ‘pass’ or successfully complete the learning in their chosen senior study pattern. For most students, 20 credits will be attained by passing the equivalent of five subjects over four semesters (Year 11 and 12). If these five subjects do not include an English and/or mathematics subject, to remain eligible for the award of a QCE, the student have to have met basic literacy and numeracy requirements. In most cases, students who do not pass their English and/or mathematics subject will ‘notionally’ meet the QCE’s literacy and/or numeracy requirements by passing at least one semester of these subjects or achieving a C standard on the QCS Test. There are a number of other ways that a student may meet these requirements as outlined on the QCAA website via the link below.
https://www.qcaa.qld.edu.au/senior/certificates-qualifications/qce/learning-options-requirements/literacy-numeracy-requirements
If you or your child has any concerns regarding the OP or the QCE, please contact me or Mr Maher.

Immunisation - Round 3
Round 3 immunisations for Year 7 and 8 students will take place this Wednesday 12 October.
Academic Awards Evening
Our Academic Awards Evening for 2016 will be held on Monday 24 October in the Shalom College Sports Centre.
Academic awards to be presented on this night include:
- Subject Prizes
- Academic Excellence Awards
- Studentship Awards
- Special Awards
Most awards are determined using results up to the end of Term 3.
Academic Excellence Awards
Academic Excellence Awards are allocated to students in each year level who have achieved a pre-determined number of ‘A’ standards across the subjects they have studied for the year to the end of Term Three. To be eligible for an Academic Excellence Award the following criteria must be met:
- Year 7 and 8 students must achieve an ‘A’ in at least one of the 4 core subjects and at least 6 altogether
- Year 9 students must achieve an ‘A’ in at least one of the 4 core subjects and at least 6 altogether
- Year 10 students must achieve an ‘A’ in at least one of the 4 core subjects and at least 5 altogether
- Year 11 and 12 students must achieve at least 4 VHA’s across their subjects
Studentship Awards
Studentship Awards acknowledge students who have been consistently diligent in their approach to academic studies; who have been active participants in class and who have completed all tasks to the best of their ability.
Studentship awards are allocated on the basis of a quantum of nominations received from class teachers. In making their nominations, teachers are asked to specifically identify students who have demonstrated:
- consistently high academic effort in class throughout the year
- consistently high application to study and homework
- an excellent attitude to learning
A studentship award is not an acknowledgement of good behaviour; it is an award that recognises and promotes individual academic excellence.
Subject Prizes
Subject Prizes are only awarded for Students in Years 10 to 12 and are determined by the respective Learning Area Coordinators in consultation with subject teachers.
Special Awards
Special awards include the ‘All Rounder’ Awards (one boy and one girl from each of Years 7, 8 and 9), sponsored awards including the ADF Leadership and Teamwork Awards (Years 10 and 12); the EH & FC Churchward Sugar Cane Technology Award (Year 10); the EH & FC Churchward Sugar Industry Bursary (Year 12); the Ahern Family Bursary (Year 12); the Service to School & Community Award (Year 12); Gladstone Port Authority Bursary (Year 12); the Mayor's Medals (Year 12); the Principal's Award (Year 12) and Dux of the College (Year 12).
Special awards are determined by the Principal in consultation with the College leadership team and academic and pastoral coordinators as appropriate.
Parents of all students who are receiving awards this year will be notified during Week 3 of this term.
If you have any questions about the Academic Awards Evening or the process of Award selection, please direct them to the Assistant Principal, Mr Robin Wust.

P & F Monthly Meeting Notes
At our monthly meeting on Tuesday 6 September the Committee was pleased to assist with the organisation of the Combined Catholic Schools Movie Night Fundraiser. The Committee supplied nibbles and drinks before the screening of ‘Miracles from Heaven’ on Saturday 10 September.
The newly installed coffee machine at the Sunday Markets canteen is being well utilised. The Committee has employed the services of two Shalom College students to operate the machine each Sunday. Feedback from customers has been very positive, with our coffee quickly gaining the reputation as being ‘excellent’!
In the Principal’s Report, Elizabeth Austin Campbell outlined that the School Renewal and Improvement process was a very positive experience for the College. The College will now examine the commendations and recommendations made within the report. Elizabeth was pleased to mention the bottom line message highlighted in the report from a student was that ‘they feel happy and safe in the Shalom College environment’. She informed the Committee that there has been a trial of SMS messaging to parents/caregivers for absent students. She was pleased to announce that during Winter Finals Day 14 premierships were won by the College.
For further information, see the full meeting minutes on the P & F Page on the College Website. Please forward any comments to the Secretary via email at pandf@shalomcollege.com. If you have an agenda item, please address it to the P & F Secretary either at the school office or email pandf@shalomcollege.com.

Shalom U14 Cricket through to Queensland Finals
The Shalom College Intermediate (Y7,8,9) Cricket team travelled to Maryborough on Wednesday 14 September to take part in the Queensland Secondary Schools - Regional T20 Knockout finals. Shalom had previously progressed as the Bundaberg and districts T20 champions.
Regional Semi Final – Gladstone SHS (won by 17 runs)
Shalom lost the toss and were sent in to bat on a damp and grassy pitch. Gladstone bowled well but some dogged determination from Jordan Condon and Matthew Jackson in top order meant we were able to have wickets in hand in the last 10 overs. Matthew Jackson (26 off 29 balls) and Adam Pozzebon (27* off 27 balls) then opened up to end the Shalom innings closed on 110 for 6 wickets.
Gladstone started well, taking advantage of the better pitch conditions and early field restrictions. Vice-captain Dylan Murphy bowled a particularly hostile spell ending with 2 wickets for 18 runs off his 4 overs. Gladstone still looked on track to take the victory but captain Edward Ryan called the bowling changes with Jackson (3/17 off 4) and Josh Pole (3/11 off 3.2 overs) swinging the game back Shalom’s way. Gladstone were finally bowled out for 93 in the 20th over with the last 6 wickets falling for 26 runs.
Best and Fairest – Matthew Jackson
Regional Final – St Mary’s Kingaroy (won by 10 wickets)
Shalom again lost the toss and were made to bowl first. From the start the bowling attack was tight and was ably supported by enthusiastic fielding. The pressure soon began to show in the opposition, with their batsmen needing to take risks in order to get the scoreboard moving. Braden Hendricksen (2/11) opened the bowling exceptionally well and was rewarded with two quick wickets. Jack Gray came on with his leg spinners and continued to apply pressure eventually ending with figures of 5 for 6 off 4 overs. St Mary’s limped to 71 all out in the 20th over. Mention must be made of a stunning acrobatic catch by Kynan Hard to dismiss on of their star batsman.
Shalom openers Ed Ryan and Adam Pozzebon then went about chasing down the total. With a mixture of good running between the wickets and positive stroke play the pair reeled off the runs against their two talented and quick opening bowlers. The total was reached in the 8th over without the loss of a wicket.
Best and Fairest – Jack Gray
The team now find themselves in the final eight of the T20 Queensland schools knockout competition and will travel to Brisbane on the Monday 17 October to contest the Queensland South division.

Open Cricket
It was a classic case of the one that got away for the Shalom open cricket team in the Queensland Secondary Schools Regional T20 finals in Maryborough on Wednesday 14 September. In the morning semi-final against Gladstone High, we were in control until the northerners hit 22 off their last over to finish with 5-107 from their 20 overs. Louis Myers-Macdonnell and Connor McNamee shared the bowling honours with two wickets each. Our boys tried hard in their run chase but against some excellent bowling, we ultimately fell an agonising four runs short at 8-103 after opener Rory Delaney led out with 22 and Matthew Pozzebon hit 21 at a strike-rate of 110%. Then in the play-off for third against Kingaroy High, we basically reversed the batting order to make sure everyone got a bat and we could manage only 85 despite a blazing 35 at a strike-rate of 130% by promoted opener Harry Waters. We then had the Burnett boys in trouble at 5-32 but they recovered brilliantly to get home with four wickets in hand and five overs to spare despite a sensational spell of 4-1 from four overs by captain and pace spearhead Sam Pearson. Despite the disappointment, Shalom did really well to qualify for the regional finals, and with just four Year 12’s in the side, most of the boys will be back for bigger and better things next year. It was special for the Waters brothers Harry and Tate, playing together during the competition for possibly the only time. Tate will finish Year 12 this year, but as a Year 10 student, Harry will be an integral member of the team for the next two years. Thank you to everyone for your efforts throughout the year and to Mr Stone, who coached the team into the finals.
Mr Vince Habermann
Wide Bay Athletics
The Wide Bay Schools Athletics carnival was held in the last week of Term 3 in Kingaroy.
Twentyfour Shalom students were part of the Bundaberg Team at the carnival.
Nathan Carney, Nathan Cook, Brycen Cory, Ethan Ennett, William Francis, Connor Ingall, Nash Kuorikoski, Benjamin Mingin, Matthew Otto, Nahum Pascoe, Bailey Perrin, Oliver Plumb, Joshua Shaxson, Reece Zwynenberg, Natika Breuer, Avril Davies, Emily Doyle, Kate Ennett, Georgia Francis, Jade Garland, Lee-Challe Kriel, Ruby-ann Tobin, Jasmine Weedon-Smith and Olivia Wightman.
Twelve Shalom students have been selected in the Wide Bay team to compete at the State Championships in Brisbane from 20 to 23 October. Congratulations go to Kate Ennett, Nathan Carney, Nash Kuorikoski, Ben Mingin, Nathan Donaldson, Brycen Cory, Nathan Cook, Matthew Otto, Oliver Plumb, Natika Breuer, Emily Doyle and Lee-Challe Kriel.
Congratulations
To Lee-Challe Kriel in Year 7. Lee-Challe competed in the McDonalds Little Athletic Regional Championship on the 3 and 4 September, where she achieved the following results:
1st Place in the 800m, 1500m and Shot Put and 2nd place in the Javelin.
She has qualified for the McDonalds Little Athletic State Championships to be held in March 2017 in Brisbane.
Congratulations
To Matthew Otto who smashed the 100m record at the recent Queensland Little Athletics Spring Championships. Matthew ran 11.17secs (old record was 11.37secs) in the 15yrs Male event. Matthew’s next challenge will be the Queensland All Schools Track and Field Titles in Brisbane held at the end of October.
T20 Cricket – State Knock-out comp
In the last week of Term 3, Shalom’s Junior and Senior Cricket teams under the guidance of Mr Robin Wust and Mr Vince Habermann respectively, travelled to Maryborough to participate in the Wide Bay finals for the T20 Cricket Competition. In the first game for the Opens, Shalom lost to Gladstone SHS which effectively knocked them out of the competition. In the afternoon game (playoff for 3rd & 4th) Shalom suffered a loss at the hands of Kingaroy State High School. However, the fortunes of the Junior Team were much better. In the morning game, Shalom defeated Gladstone State High School by 11 runs and then went on to face St Mary’s from Kingaroy in the final, with the winner progressing to the Southern Conference finals in Brisbane in Term 4. Shalom bowled first and were clinical in the field, tearing apart the St Mary’s top order. Jack Gray was the chief destroyer, taking 5 for 6. Shalom were chasing 71 runs for victory and the openers of Adam Pozzebon and Edward Ryan were brutal to anything with width and Shalom reached the total in eight overs to secure victory.
Swimming
Congratulations to Connor Simms for his wonderful achievement representing Queensland at the National Schools Swimming Championships in Darwin. Connor is now officially the No 2 ranked 15years 100m swimmer in Australia, winning the Silver medal. He was also part of the Bronze medal winning 4 x 50m Freestyle Relay team. His lead off time of 24.43secs would have won him gold in the 50m Individual event, however he was not selected to swim in this event. He was heading off to New Zealand for their National Short Course Championships last week, so watch this space!
Surf Life Saving
On the last day of last term 35 Shalom students participated in the Wide Bay Surf Life Saving Carnival at Bargara. he team competed brilliantly all day against some tough competition from seven Secondary Schools from across Wide Bay. Shalom finished the day victorious with a 70 point win over their closest competitors St Luke’s. Shalom also won the percentage points trophy, based on numbers competing, for the first time. Congratulations to all those who competed on the day and thank you to Mr John Davis for all his hard work organising the team and to Mr Michael Harris, Mr Ben Davis and Mrs Michelle Moller for helping on the day. Thanks to the Shalom competitors that stepped up in age groups to fill in gaps throughout the day. A special mention must go to our only Age Champions on the day, Ewan Heads in the 13yrs Male Division.
Rowing
At the 2016 Queensland Schools Championship Regatta held at Bucca from Friday 16 to Monday 19 September, Shalom was represented by 23 rowers across all age groups. This was one of the largest ever Queensland Schools Championship Regattas with many schools being represented from all around the State. Conditions at Bucca were perfect over the four days and the competition was first class with most of the Brisbane ‘Rowing’ schools dominating, until the U16 Boys Singles event came along. Shalom’s Ethan Weder progressed through the heats comfortably and thought he had done enough in the Semi Final, as the top 2 in each semi automatically qualified. However Ethan misjudged his finish in the semi and finished 3rd and there was a nervous wait to see if he had qualified for the final based on times. Fortunately, all was fine, with Ethan the fastest non automatic qualifier and his strategy of conserving energy for the final was looking to pay off. In the Final, Ethan got away to an early lead and held on to win his first State Gold Medal and Shalom’s only medal of the 2016 State Schools Rowing Titles. Congratulations to all the Shalom Rowers who participated and in particular the coaches and parents/volunteers who put into this sport over the better part of the whole year.

Certificate I in General Construction
Last term a number of students from the Year 11 and 12 Construction classes utilised their skills to construct some shelving units for the Rotary Club of Bundaberg Sunrise for their shed at the Bundaberg Recreation Precinct. This valuable skill based project ensured students continued to developed in areas covered throughout the course on a ‘real life’ community service project.
A member from the Rotary Club approached me earlier in the term to establish the feasibility of the class being able to manufacture and install the shelves. Rotary covered the cost of some materials, along with Noyes Glass and Aluminium, who supplied some excess lengths of aluminium for the rear legs and supports. Shalom College’s Registered Training Organisation (RTO) for the Certificate 1 course, Bluedog Training, supplied the pine for the shelf frames and the front legs.
Student were guided by Mr Zardus and myself so quite a number of competencies were covered on the project from measuring, use of various hand tools and machines/nail guns, assembling/construction of the shelves and then ‘flat packing’ the shelves in readiness for transportation.
Over the break Jack Roelofs and myself assembled the two shelving units which are just over three metres in length and 900 millimetres wide. The shelves will allow the Rotary Club to store many items for their community service activities in Bundaberg.
This type of project allows the students to work as a team, use skills learnt throughout the course, while completing the project to set specifications.

As the Shalom St Vincent De Paul Society have supported the PNG community for many years, we are looking to see if there is a possibility for a school trip to the region for September 2017. At this stage we are interested in gathering expressions of interest for students in Years 10 and 11. An information session will then be held for further details. Please contact Mrs Joanne Gills (joanne_gills@rok.catholic.edu.au), Mrs Cheryl Petersen (petersenc@shalomcollege.com), or Mr Vince Habermann (Vincent_habermann@shalomcollege.com) to express an interest in the possible trip or seek further information.

Ignite Conference
“Saviour, you have set me free. Saviour, come alive in me”
(Greater, Emmanuel Worship)
From Thursday 22 to Sunday 25 September this year, a group of fourteen young people travelled down to Brisbane to engage in a further understanding of their faith and explore the connection with Our Saviour at the Ignite Conference. The theme of the conference was Revelation. We all thought we knew what that meant however, we were all thoroughly surprised because it was more than the typical ‘revelation’. To all the young people who attended, the revelation that was mostly experienced was the exposure to Our Lord God. God is always there for us whether we know it or not. The challenge that was given to every person was to surrender to God. During the course of the four days, there were many opportunities given allowing for the surrender.
We were offered the chance to explore many different methods in which we could give ourselves to God in a way that we had never thought about. The opportunity for prayer, reconciliation, praise and worship as well as the exposition of the Blessed Sacrament was provided. What this allowed was the personal development of faith with the close proximity of God and other people who shared the same beliefs. This was surrender to the faith. Over the four days, there were also many talks and sessions which explored the understanding of ourselves and God that might otherwise be unclear.
We were fortunate enough to have the band Emmanuel Worship lead us through the night rallies and praise and worship. One of the songs that was regularly sung was Lighthouse which had a strong line that stuck out to some of us: ‘You are the peace in my troubled sea’.
From going to Ignite and experiencing the love that God holds for each person, this line stood out to tell us that yes, He will always be here to share burdens and give us the peace in our lives. Do not be afraid, we work under the banner and the authority of Jesus Christ!
We would also like to give a huge thank you to Mr Sheehan and Mrs Petersen for taking time out of their holidays to take the fourteen of us to Brisbane and organising getting us to the conference. We would not have been able to get there without your support! Thank You!
