Principal’s Reflection

I often get to feel very proud of Shalom – its students and its staff. Never more so than last week as we farewelled our Year 12 students. It was a wonderful celebration for this community for a group of young people who have made a great contribution to the culture of the community. I wrote last week about hoping that they are ready for the next step. I am as confident as I can be that we have worked as hard as we can to prepare them. It is now up to them.

The world into which they are moving is one of incredible potential but not without its challenges. I wrote recently about the differences since I was their age about dating rituals. I was talking to the parent of one of our young men only recently about the challenges of raising a teenager. This parent is not one to take things at face value and before allowing her son to sign up for Snapchat and Instagram ensured that she and her husband were able to ‘follow’ whatever was posted. She told me that she was really worried about the unsolicited and very inappropriate images sent to her son by students at Shalom and elsewhere. Stories like that really worry me as an educator and as a parent. I get worried by stories of families hosting parties where alcohol is freely available and supervision is scant. I worry that there are some parents who want to be more a friend to their child than a parent. I worry about those parents who will also believe whatever their child tells them.

Parenting and educating is hard work and certainly not for the faint-hearted but, when it is done well, there can be few things more rewarding in life. Our graduating Year 12s will have made their share of mistakes and probably have a few left to make. That said, I believe that many of these young people are taking the next step in their lives determined to leave the world a better place than they found it.

Letter from the Prime Minister

Theodor Delaney, our 2016 College Captain, off his own bat, wrote to the Prime Minister asking for a message for the Shalom College Graduating class (Theo has incredible initiative!). Mr Turnbull responded and wrote a really lovely and personal letter to the Year 12 class. It is well worth a read.

Bundaberg White Ribbon Breakfast

On Wednesday 23 November, 20 Year 11 Shalom young men and women will attend this breakfast at the RSL Services Club which is sponsored by Rotary. White Ribbon Australia has been developed to promote the obligation on all to combat Domestic Violence in all of its forms. It is great that there is such continued emphasis on this within Australia. The College is very grateful to West Bundaberg and Bundaberg Sunrise Rotary associations and their respective Presidents, Phil Saxby and Steve Ford for their support in hosting our students to attend.

Year 10 and 11 Exams

Exam Block starts today 21 November for Year 11 and Wednesday 23 November Period 3 for Year 10. All Year 10 students must attend Wednesday morning for Periods 1 and 2, however may leave if they are not required for exams on that day in Period 3 or 4 and have not been requested by teachers to complete outstanding assessments.

For both Year 10 and 11, once the exam period commences, students are only required to attend for their exam sessions. Please remind your Year 11 and 10 children that all assessment pieces need to be complete and, if outstanding, students will be required to attend supplementary sessions during the week.

Bundaberg Playhouse Theatre

‘Evita’ is currently being performed at the Bundaberg Playhouse Theatre. I was lucky enough to see it on Saturday night. Isabella Beutel (Year 11 Walsh) is a stand out as Eva Peron. Grace Petersen (Year 12 MacKillop) and Miss Michelle Hair from our Learning Support staff also put in wonderful performances in this production.

Continuing Enrolment

We would be most grateful for the earliest possible advice if your child will not be returning to Shalom in 2017. Again, demand for places is strong and in order to give families the best advice, we need to accurately know our enrolment for next year.

Message from the Bishop

Communities in East Timor, Papua New Guinea and Kiribati are asking for educators, health professionals and trades people. They will provide opportunities for those who have not had the advantage of an Australian education and assist to develop processes and programs of organisations in vital sectors of local communities. This is one of the most effective ways of assisting community self-reliance and sustainable poverty reduction.

There are very few costs for any who take up a mission placement with Palms. Orientation, living allowance and accommodation are provided. Catholic Bishops also support a Lay Missionary Gratuity Fund that provides an extra payment of $2500.00 for each year of service.

Palms has been recruiting, preparing and supporting Australian Catholics who volunteer to share their lives and skills. They will provide outstanding support during application, in the field and upon return home.

Applications for 2017 placement is closing very soon. Please email palms@palms.org.au or call Christine on 02 9560 5333 now to learn more about this wonderful opportunity.

P & F Committee

To all P & F Members, you are reminded that our monthly meeting is held in the staff common room – all parents are welcome. Please note the first P & F meeting for 2017 will be held on Tuesday 7 February 2017 at 5:30pm.

Quiet Achiever

There are many activities taking place in Shalom which if you are not in daily contact with it, one takes it for granted. This week I had reason to use the Performing Arts Precinct for a slide/video presentation at night, Mr Terry Plunkett is responsible for hosting the night users of the Theatre. He could not have been more helpful. Many thanks to this Shalom Quiet Achiever.

Blood Bank

This year close to 50 students donated blood to the Blood Bank. This is an amazing contribution from Shalom College and we thank all those students for giving to this community service. Congratulations to Walsh House, who have received the trophy for the most donors for 2016.

AppleCare+ for iPads

For anyone that is looking to purchase a new iPad, please consider purchasing AppleCare+. This new scheme provides a two-year warranty to new iPads as well as two accidental damage claims for the warranty period of the device. It’s certainly worth it for peace of mind as I’m sure we all have experienced or heard of an experience of someone dropping a tablet or phone and trying to get the screen repaired.

Year 10 and Year11 School Laptops

As you would be aware from information in last week’s newsletter, we have committed to allowing Year 10 and 11 students to keep their school laptops over the holidays. We have requested for these students to assist us by bringing their laptop in this week and have the IT Unit look over the device and if any damage is detected, repairs can be organised before the end of the year.

Parents can you also please assist us by confirming your child still has their Shalom laptop charger. We have a small number of lost chargers in our office and we know some students have been borrowing chargers from other students to get them through the year. All our chargers are genuine HP and they are engraved with a special code. If your child is missing their charger, please advise the IT Unit so we can purchase a replacement.

If your child is leaving the school, please don’t forget to return the laptop, charger and bag to the IT Unit. If you wish to purchase the device, we can provide you a buyout price and provide further instructions for you to take ownership of the device.

South Sea Islander History in Bundaberg - “Our Year 9 Excursion” by Year 9 Students

Sugar Museum - Fairymead House

The Fairymead House is a big old house that was originally at the Sugar Industry farm. The Young family, the people who owned the house, were very wealthy. Fairymead House has lots of rooms and Miss Kate was very helpful when she showed us around the house. We found that the big old bell was very loud and some of the other machines are quite old. In the Bell Room, we read about the South Sea Islanders (SSI), like how they went to war and fought for Australia. We found that very interesting.

Stone Wall – Mon Repos

At the stone wall we listened to Mr Matt Nagas tell us the history about the wall. He said that there was another metre under the ground because it had sunk into the sand over time. This is the longest rock wall in Queensland at 1.5kms. Lots of South Sea Islanders worked hard and made lots of sacrifices when building this wall. We all reflected on what it must have been like for the South Sea Islanders working during this time.

Grave Sites

At the Gravesite Mr Brian Courtice showed us the burial ground of 29 South Sea Islanders people buried there. Some of these graves were even children. Also at this property a South Sea Islander worker had been hung from a tree. Mr Courtice showed us where the South Sea Islanders had built their working huts.

South Sea Islander Church

Mr Kelvin Nagas showed us around this peaceful site and shared many interesting stories about the South Sea Islanders people in our region. We all had a really good feeling walking around the church. It was magical knowing that the land had been cleared by the South Sea Islanders community and the church was built by hand. It was also sad to see how many South Sea Islanders children and adults were buried in such a small space and a many of their graves are unnamed.

We would like to thank all the people who showed us around and told us more about the history of the South Sea Islander people in Bundaberg. We really enjoyed this experience and look forward to helping keep this history alive!

Trial Rugby League Games

Our Shalom Open and 14 years’ Rugby League teams travelled to Rockhampton on Friday 11 November for trial games against The Cathedral College. It was a long day with the bus setting off at 8:30am. The temperature was 40 degrees at the proposed starting time of 2:00pm for the 14’s, therefore it was pushed back to 3:20pm.

The 14 Years team played with 15 boys and performed well in very hot conditions creating many chances, however with six regular players not being in the team, the necessary cohesion was lacking. The game was played in three 10 minute quarters due to the extreme heat. The team played well but went down 14-6, with our only try being scored off an error from defensive pressure in the in-goal by Ben Taylor and Jake Bonus kicked the conversion. The team’s level of competition, against a well drilled opposition, was very high and they would have scored more points if greater cohesion of the team could have been established through sustained training sessions. Jake Bonus led the team brilliantly with Bradley Moore, Hudson Low and Tooma Fennessy playing very well in their first outing with the team. Malachi Nixon also stood tall, saving two tries whilst playing fullback.

The Open team was led by Martin Powell and played four 10 minute quarters. We used 22 players to practice specific skills developed at training to this point, but also learnt from a well-developed team that had only six players missing from their Confraternity Shield Semi Final team from this year. The team started strong, competing in most facets of the game, but were unable to win tackles and found it very difficult to defend late in sets. Consequently, it was also very difficult to attack with a set, with a fast moving defensive line from TCC. The players were very observant of the advantages that TCC had in ruck area of the game though and will hopefully take that on board and improve their game in the future. The team deserved praise for remaining positive and maintaining focus on why they were playing the game, which was to learn from quality opposition. TCC were very accommodating, providing a BBQ after the game and the use of their pool prior to returning to Shalom at 10:30pm. TCC Principal and former Shalom Deputy Principal Mr Robert Alexander, who was also formerly one of Queensland’s top referees and served on the ARL panel before the formation of the NRL, refereed the 14s game. All of the players were very well behaved and were a credit to the Shalom Community. The squad had two more training sessions last week with training to recommence from week one of Term 1 next year on the Tuesday. Coach Mr Neil Feather is also planning on having two sessions a week over the holidays for those that want to attend. During term one, more games are scheduled against Rockhampton’s Emmaus College and Roma’s St John’s Catholic School, with other games to be announced soon, all leading into the state-wide knock out competition, the Confraternity Carnival hosted by Padua College, and the local Broncos Challenge.

Shalom U13 Boys Win the BDSSS Rugby Sevens Competition

Under 13 and Under 15 Boys represented Shalom in the BDSSS Rugby Sevens competition this term. Training started early in Term 4, with a short, three-week round robin competition finishing on Thursday 10 November.

Despite a distinct lack of rugby experience, the Under 15 Boys showed great passages of free-flowing, running rugby. Their efforts were hampered by difficulty in fielding consistent players and numbers, but all of those who participated gave 100%. In the end, the boys won 3 of their 6 games and took out second place in the competition behind a strong Bundaberg State High School outfit.

The Under 13 Boys dominated their division – not losing a game over the three weeks. Their experience shone through with excellent structure at the break down, leading to a great deal of possession which transferred to points by the end of the game. With a solid core of players, this group will go far to retain the Fraser Coast Sevens trophy they claimed earlier this year.

Thanks go to Len Kirchner of BCC for his organisation, to Max Francis (Shalom parent and rugby union stalwart) for his timekeeping and logistical support, and also to the referees and coaches who gave up their time to enable the competition to happen.

We look forward to bigger and better Rugby Union competitions in 2017.

Arts in Performance

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all our tutors and students for such a great year. You have all worked so hard this year particularly as we had the Musical on top of all the other performances which we do each year.

We are all looking forward to moving in to the new ‘band room’ as it has been affectionately named and going by the work to rectify the acoustic problem, it is shaping up to be a ‘state of the art’ teaching space.

All rehearsals have finished for the year and lessons will conclude next week. In the New Year, we will be in the new teaching rooms, teaching all orchestral instruments, piano and vocal.

On behalf of the Instrumental Music Team, Dance and Drama staff, I would like to wish you best wishes for the Christmas Season and have a restful, safe holiday.

Learning Enhancement Unit News

BUSHkid’s has organised a two-part ADHD Parent Education and Support Group to help parents and care-givers understand and support children with an ADHD diagnosis. The program aims to provide an opportunity to meet other parents and care-givers who are experiencing challenges in raising a child who has a diagnosis of ADHD. This condition is often misunderstood and the facilitator will provide parents with up to date information on the nature of ADHD and strategies for helping the family to cope. The program also discusses ideas on how to build children’s self-esteem and ways to develop strong positive relationships within the family, as well as addressing parent stress.
