Principal's Reflection

What's the best way to make an impact on a community? Is it better to do things in such a way that we are noticed by everyone? Are those who seek out ways to draw attention to themselves more effective than the quiet achievers, who shun the limelight as they are happy to go about their business, behind the scenes with a minimum of fuss, but a maximum of dedication.

Last week, the NewsMail served up a good example of this scenario. The front page of the paper carried a story of the loudest of the loud. A young driver who appears to have created the ultimate in attention grabbing stunts. Pouring oil onto the road and proceeding to complete burnout after burnout isn't abhorrent behaviour just because of its stupidity and illegality. What is especially disappointing is the obvious need to draw attention to himself. This behaviour is only about creating some type of status for himself because he has nothing else to offer.

We all like to be noticed. Receiving approval for what we have achieved is motivating, but it can be taken too far. When the need for attention exceeds everything else, then we lack honour and merit. Yet, we continue to give time and in the case of the NewsMail give space to loud and unruly behaviour.

Contrast this to a low key article at the back of the paper about our own Sandi Davis. Sandi has just been named the Under 18 Junior Surf Lifesaver of the Year. Some of you probably are aware of that. But are you aware of the other work that Sandi is involved in? She and her family spend many hours of their time raising funds and increasing the membership of the Moore Park Surf Life Saving Club. These clubs are important for the contribution they make to a community. Do we ever stop and think about the time that dedicated members and volunteers put in to keeping these organisations afloat? Selfless commitment. Tireless hours. Positive motivation. These are some of the behind the scenes emotions that drive people such as Sandi and we all benefit from people like her. Yet we would never know, because they will never tell us. They will work quietly without ever drawing attention to themselves.

There is a very appropriate letter to the editor about the placement of the news stories in NewsMail. The writer of the letter states that those responsible for the poorest of the poor behaviour get the front page story and headline. Those responsible for genuine effective community contributions are found buried in the back pages. I have to say I agree. And not because the behaviour of the driver of the car was reckless and dangerous. But rather because it was attention seeking and egotistical. We need people like Sandi who will give a lifetime of service, without ever asking for anything in return. As Jesus tells us in the Gospels "it is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter heaven". Jesus is not speaking literally. What he is preaching is humility and service. It's not always about us, but about always being honourable.

As a community however, we also need to recognise everything that is good about the behind the scenes workers upon whom the building blocks of our city are established. Congratulations Sandi and the others just like you. None of you will tell us what you do, but I will, and we all, admire you for it.

Congratulations

Tim Harris, a current Year 12 student, has completed the University of Queensland Enhanced Studies Program 2016. A wonderful achievement by this young man.

Other Information

Student Drivers

Those students who have their licence and want to drive to school must obtain a Permission to Drive form from the Assistant Principal - Students.

Clearly stated on the form are several requirements/terms and conditions, the most important two are:

  • keys are to be handed in to the office each day
  • once at school all students including student drivers are not allowed to leave the College without written parental permission.

Unfortunately, we have had a couple of instances just recently where students have come to school early of a morning for training and then left after that, taking other students with them and not arriving back at school in time for the beginning of first period. I need to remind students and parents that this practice is not allowed.

Absences

If your child is absent from the College can I ask that you write a note in the Record Book on the first day of their return as way of explanation. I would encourage you to use the student absentee line in the first instance to advise the school of your child's absence but a written note is still required.

Student Absentee Line: 4155 8181.

Punctuality

Can I remind everyone that it is important that your child is on time for school each day. A note of explanation, which can be written in the Record Book, is required if a student is late to school.

Uniform

As many of you would know the blue jacket that has become very popular of late is no longer available. The students need to wear the jumper (or the blue jacket should they own one). The Year 12 students are permitted to wear the senior jacket but not the jersey with their formal uniform. Those students who purchased the black jackets to wear to Confraternity this year may also wear these jackets to school. A number of students purchased the track suit top which is black with a red collar - the convenor in the uniform shop assures me that when students were purchasing these they were told that they were the top of the College tracksuit and should not be worn to school with the formal uniform. Unfortunately, a number of students are now wearing these jackets as part of their formal uniform.

Please be advised that in 2017 and onwards these jackets (the black with red collar tracksuit top) will not be permitted to be worn.

Happy Fathers Day to all our dads this Sunday, have a wonderful day!

Curriculum Notes

QCS Test

Our Year 12 Students will sit the QCS Test on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Again, as a community we will have them in our prayers, wish them well and simply ask that they do their best.

Parents seeking any additional advice about supporting their child at this time are encouraged to contact me or Mr Maher and to access the resources posted on the Intranet under the 'QCS Test' tab.

Subject Selections for 2017

Subject selections for students going into Years 9, 10 and 11 in 2017 should be finalised this week. Year 10 students must submit their completed SET Plans (including the signed subject selection receipt) by this Friday 2 September. Year 8 and 9 students must submit their signed subject selection receipts by Monday 29 August. Parents who are having difficulty in completing the processes around subject selection or who have unresolved concerns about the choices their child is making are welcome to contact me.

Year 11 and 12 End of Term 3 Examination Timetable

End of Term 3 examinations are scheduled for Year 11 and 12 students from Monday 5 September to Friday 9 September. The examination timetable has been posted on the College Intranet ('Assessment and Reporting' tab), the College Website (Curriculum/Senior School/Forms & Publications) and Daily Notices (pushed to students via Student Café). Most students will have at least one examination during the block, some will have quite a number depending on the subjects they study and how assessment is conducted in these subjects. Not all subjects use the examination block.

Attendance During Examinations

During the examination block all Year 11 and 12 students are deemed to be in attendance but they are only required at school to sit scheduled examinations or to complete supplementary assessments if required. When attending the College during examination blocks students must be in full and correct College day uniform. When not in attendance during the examination block students must be engaged in home study, assignment work, work experience or work placement activities - it is not 'time off'.

Students who have few or no examinations scheduled during the examination block are expected to be engaged in organised Work Experience, Structured Workplace Learning related to VET studies or attendance at a workplace related to an established School-based Apprenticeship or Traineeship. Please contact Mrs O'Donnell on 4155 8136 or at Liza_ODonnell@shalomcollege.com for more information about Work Experience, Structured Workplace Learning or School-based Apprenticeships or Traineeships.

Circle of Mercy

This week we had visitors Monica and Gina who came to welcome our Year 7 students to the Circle of Mercy. They sang Mercy songs, some of which we have heard in our liturgies this year. The year sevens celebrated a prayer service where they made special promises of mercy to carry out at home and in our College. Some of the promises are written below and were shared on assembly Friday.

'Hug my Mum more often'
'Stand up for what is right!'
'Care for other people and ask if they are OK if they look sad'
'Be respectful to our teachers'
'Attempt to not annoy my sisters, no matter how much they anger me'
'Stand up to bullies'
'If someone is being picked on I'd go and help them out. For example, verbal or physical'
'If someone drops something I'll help pick it up'
'Stop back chatting Referees'
'Make people smile if they are feeling sad'
'Share the ball when playing sport'
'Help those in need e.g. homeless and older people'
'Be nicer to my mum and dad'
'Donate to charity'
'Help my grandparents around the house'
'Show love and compassion to all my family members'

Twilight PDE

Last Tuesday our teachers remained behind to engage in professional learning. Monica O'Brien and Gina Ogilvie creatively delivered a thought provoking twilight professional development session with 90 of our Secondary School Teachers. Gina and Monica spoke about the processes our brain goes through in the communication cycle. It helped us to identify the filters and internal representations we bring to communicating with others and the impact this can have on our state of mind, physiology and ultimately our behaviour in the work place and at home. Many of us were able to identify bad habits we had developed over time and walked away feeling more self and peer aware. This practical and engaging presentation afforded us some tools to use to navigate our way through conflict-resolution situations by placing ourselves outside of a first person state when communicating with others.

David Kobler from Protect Our Kids Online Safety, travels interstate each year to work with our Year 10's on the Sexual Education component of our Personal Development Program. He also delivers a very informative Parent Night for not only the parents of Year 10 but all parents interested in how to best parent and help navigate your teenager through a highly sexualised world, impacted by modern day technology and media. This is a tool box for any parent and open to our Primary feeder schools as well, in preparation for the next stage of their child's life.

Quiet Achiever

Our Quiet Achiever this week is Rachel Williams, Year 11 Hogan. Rachel is a great ambassador as a Senior student at Shalom College. She is always willing to help out with anything that is asked of her within her Pastoral Care class in Hogan 1. Rachel leads by example, always displaying impeccable uniform and grooming, which is accompanied by a pleasant and well-mannered demeanor. She has been a great role model for younger students within her house and the College. Part of this has been her ability to display important life balance of juggling part-time work, fantastic talent within her cultural endeavour of Aboriginal art whilst still maintaining good academic results.

Another Quiet Achiever for this week is Monique Van Kooten, Year 12 Hogan. Monique is an exceptionally hard working student and is committed to being involved in new opportunities in the Shalom community. Recently, Monique challenged herself by presenting a superb speech at the Quota Student of the Year Quest highlighting the importance of overcoming difficulties as you strive for success! Inspiring message Monique. Well done!

NAIDOC Week Achievement

Congratulations to Amaru Brown who recently won the NAIDOC award for Apprentice/Traineeship of the Year 2016. Amaru is an excellent role model for young Indigenous students and we are proud to have Amaru as a senior within the Shalom community.

Past Student Achievement

We also celebrate the success of a past Shalom College Student and Vocational Student Mitchell Curd, who was recently presented the prestigious 'Apprentice of the Year Award' by Master Builders Queensland. Congratulations Mitchell!

Logistics and Health Industry

If you are currently in Year 11 and are interested in the Logistics or Health Industries, I recommend that you attend the Department of Education and Training recruitment sessions called Transition to Work Program for 2017. An information session will be held on Friday 2 September at 3:15pm in the Loyola Centre. The format of these programs involves Students attending off campus training one day each school week during Semester 1, to complete their qualification (Certificate II in Health Support Service or Certificate II Logistics), followed by work placement in Semester 2. This program is extremely valuable as it offers hands-on learning and puts Students in front of potential employers in their final year of school. Successful students would gain a study period to assist with keeping on top of their school work. Please see Mrs O'Donnell or email her for more information.

Current Year 10 Students

If you are a current Year 10 student who is interested in the Construction Industry, I would strongly recommend that you come along at the beginning of first lunch on Monday 5 September to Loyola Centre to listen to the Construction Skills Queensland present their Doorways to Construction Program. This program offers structured workplace learning opportunities and aims at building a well prepared candidate for the workforce.

Term 4

During Term 4 we will start calling for expressions of interest and enrolments from our current Year 10 and 11 Students for 2017 TAFE Courses. Please start preparing for this by looking at their 2017 course guide here:

Children's Book Week

In 1946, the Children's Book Council of Australia established annual book awards to promote books of high literary and artistic quality. Every year, schools and public libraries spend a week celebrating books, Australian authors and illustrators. The theme for the 2016 Children's Book Week is 'Story Country' which emphasises the importance of telling stories. In 2016, Book Week runs from Saturday 20 August to Friday 26 August. With over 400 books entered for this year's awards, the judges have the difficult task of choosing just one winner and two Honour book recipients in each of the five award categories. The winners are: 'Cloudwish' by Fiona Wood (Older Readers); 'Soon' by Morris Gleitzman (Younger Readers); 'Mr Huff' by Anna Walker (Early Childhood); 'Flight' by Nadia Wheatley (Picture Book); and 'Lennie the Legend' by Stephanie Owen Reeder (Information Book). These books are available for students to read in either the Beerarlem and Goondeel Libraries.

Shalom U13 boys scored their third win in a row defeating a Bundaberg State High side by a convincing 10-1. The strikers and wings shared the scoring around with Oscar McDonald, Darcy Cameron, Oliver Collins, Joshua Mason, Cooper Burns and Patrick Maher all scoring. They were well supported in the midfield by Declen Thatcher, Michel Smith and Myles Jacobsen. This win means Shalom will have qualified for the finals to be played on Finals Day and they have certainly shown that they possess a good chance of doing very well. MVP for Shalom is Joshua Mason.

On Thursday 18 August the Shalom Vicki Wilson Cup Netball Team went to Maryborough to compete in the inter-region round of the competition. The girls would like to thank Year 9 student Rhys Crook for giving up her day to come away and umpire for us. They would also like to thank Mr Craig Hammermeister for driving the bus and Miss Ashleigh Kaye for scoring and helping them during the day.
