Principal’s Reflection
Big week this week at Shalom. We will participate in the NSIT Audit of the College and also launch the 2021 College Musical, ‘Footloose’. Hopefully, both will have very positive outcomes for the College. This is our second NSIT process. The first was in 2016. I remember, at the time, on the first day of the process, one of the visiting team complemented us on the quality of facilities and asked me, ‘As Principal, what are you most proud of at Shalom?’ I said then, as I would today, the thing I am most proud of is the ‘culture’ here at the College. That encompasses a lot of things – the quality of relationships among the students and staff, the quality of care we give young people, the support offered to those who are most in need and the sense of safety students feel when they walk into the College. Those things are much more important to us than great buildings. Culture is where our identity as a Catholic school – one that takes Jesus seriously – is made real. A question we must continually ask is, ‘Are the values of our Mission Statement lived out, or are they words on a page’. This is a constant and really important challenge. Last week, I spoke to the students on Assembly and then wrote to every parent about a challenge to culture at Shalom, to which we have to respond. That centered on the issue of students requesting, from others, that they forward inappropriate photos. This is a curse at Shalom, and beyond. Sharing of such images with others can have appalling consequences. Not treating others respectfully, 24/7, 365 days a year, is just not OK.
Last week, I made clear to students and parents that such actions will not be tolerated at Shalom. Young women, particularly, but certainly not exclusively, need to know that if they are brave enough to step up and report predatory behavior, that something very significant will happen in response to substantiated claims. If we all want to be proud of a great culture at Shalom, I don’t think we can do anything less. As the organizational experts tells us, ‘Culture eats Strategy for breakfast!’
Dr Justin Coulson – will be presenting to parents on Tuesday night at 7pm in our Theatre. Justin will be giving parents some tips about dealing with anxiety in their children. Please make every effort to attend, it will be a great opportunity.
Below is the link for Dr Coulson’s parent evening live stream.
NSIT – there is slot on Tuesday afternoon from 2.45pm -3.30pm for any parent to join a group and chat to one of our visitors. If you would like to take up this opportunity, please give Ms Amanda O’Mara a call on 41558103.
Footloose the Musical – four shows fully sold out – well done. These young people and the numerous staff who have assisted them have worked incredibly hard to bring this show to the point it is now. Hundreds of hours of hard work will, I have no doubt, pay off this week. Every best wish to the cast, crew and staff of this production. Full Dress Rehearsal on Wednesday.
Interhouse Athletics Carnival is on Thursday and Friday of next week. This is an important part of our culture at Shalom and these are compulsory days of school.

Dressed by Vinnies Fashion Parade
The Shalom Vinnies group decided this term to raise much needed money for our local Vinnies men’s shelter to raise awareness of men’s mental health because of homelessness. To both raise money and promote the Vinnies shops, and to have some fun, a fashion parade was planned. Purchasing clothes from Vinnies, via a pop-up shop here at Shalom, students and staff nominated to dress up in a variety of categories – glamorous, decades such as the 80s, and casual wear. Mrs O’Shea-Hard’s Year 12 CMT class even made it a part of their class work, with students visiting SVDP, assisting in the sorting of the clothes for the pop-up shop, purchasing outfits and dressing up for the fashion parade.
Friday was the fashion parade. All participants looked amazing and went to great efforts. With an excited audience, some well-dressed fashionable judges, and some hilarious outfits on display the group raised $367.30. An amazing effort from all who purchased clothes, and those who donated at the fashion parade.
A huge thanks to our Vinnies members, Year 12 CMT, Mrs O’Shea-Hard, judges, our enthusiastic audience, and all who participated.

Music Department
In the music department we love what we do! Making music is such a fulfilling experience in countless ways which makes it even more exciting that recent research has shown that playing an instrument has significant effects on brain development. For example, after about three years of learning a musical instrument the corpus callosum, which joins the two hemispheres of the brain, increases significantly in thickness. This means that musicians have an improved ability to solve problems as their brain is primed to make faster connections between the logical and lateral thinking sections of the brain. Due to Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging (FMRI) and Position Emission Tomography (PET) technology, neuroscientists have been able to observe that music is one of the only human activities that involves both hemispheres of the brain working concurrently and in multiple locations. This link below will take you to a fascinating graphic presentation on music and the brain by Dr Anita Collins, an Australian neuroscientist.
Not only does music make you smarter, but it also has social-emotional benefits. The act of playing an instrument or singing releases endorphins, but playing or singing with a group of people allows a synergy that cannot be replicated anywhere else. This connection is so strong that it can be achieved even when the participants cannot speak the same language. There is a concept called flow that was coined by the Hungarian-American psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihályi in 1975, where participants lose their sense of time and place when they are fully immersed in an activity, similar to being lost in a good book. Flow is experienced regularly by musicians as they practise the creative process and this allows the body to relax and be focused entirely on the activity of playing or singing. Many highly accomplished scientists, doctors, veterinarians, astronauts and other professionals use music as a tool for relaxation and cognitive disconnect from their daily work. What a powerful tool to equip our young people with as they negotiate the uncertainty of their teenage years and beyond.
In addition to the benefits already discussed, the cognitive speed at which the musician’s brain can operate makes them attractive candidates for entry into high-level university degrees. Along with the entrance examinations, prospective medical students are favoured if they have had formal training in music as there is a high correlation with increased perseverance, attention to detail, initiative and ability to multi-task. Coupled with the enjoyment that is experienced from performing, it makes complete sense to help young people to find the musical instrument (or voice) that will be an asset to them for the rest of their lives.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).

FOCUS- Property Progress Report by: Norm Whyte Business Manager
Contemplating the content of this report, the thought struck me that, in this year of Saint Joseph, our stewardship and husbandry of parish assets should reflect the ethos of St. Joseph, “a working father” as referred to in the Holy Father Francis’ recent Apostolic Letter “Patris Corde”. In my mind, St. Joseph would have worked carefully and quietly in his carpentry workshop, maintained the family home, tended a family garden, gave willingly of his services and talents to his neighbours, and set an example of a thoughtful, humble and dedicated man who easily earned the respect of all those who knew him. Mindful of his humility, I offer the following report.
Holy Rosary Air conditioning: After more than 6 years of research and planning, the installation has been very successful, and we are now waiting for the final sign-off by our project engineer. This should happen within a month. Solar panels installation: Completed last month, and now waiting for final commissioning by Ergon. LED lighting: After much research and discussion, Majes Electrical carried out a very successful upgrade from the previous bulbs which consumed much electricity and produced very high temperatures. Landscaping: After a slow start due to the loss of the concreter, we are back on track, and plan to complete the work by mid-July. The final result will present a much more attractive corner, will be inviting and user friendly.
Novakoski Hall: We are taking steps to reduce the noise levels by carpeting the floor. If additional soundproofing is then required, we will look at more measures. The old projector will be replaced with a new TV monitor, thereby providing much improved audio and visual qualities. Considering the decision from the recent Summit for renewed outreach and hospitality, creative thought is being given to the feasibility of creating a “Nova Kiosk” by doing minor renovations to the Hall.
Youth Ministry Centre: With the growing success of the Youth Ministry, the very old kitchen and air conditioner need replacing, and unused sections need to be converted to storage.
St. Mary’s Complex: This Sunday 13/06 we are holding a meeting after the 9.00 AM Mass in St. Patrick’s Hall to discuss the progress made in finding the best solution for the future of this site. Looking forward to seeing you there.
St. Patrick: We have one remaining landscaping task, and that is the garden bed between the church and the school carpark. Some of the large trees there have died, and the remaining ones create leaf litter and on-going maintenance.
St. James: Some overdue maintenance is required in the adjoining presbytery, and some more of the timber stumps need replacing.
The Parish Finance Council is currently formulating the budget for the new financial year, and includes provision for many routine maintenance projects which are part and parcel of effective stewardship. I’d like to acknowledge the input and counsel from our Finance Committee, and from all those dedicated tradespeople and volunteers who have made these projects possible.
In his Apostolic Letter, Pope Francis states: “In our own day, …… there is a renewed need to appreciate the importance of dignified work, of which Saint Joseph is an exemplary patron.”
