Principal’s Reflection
At Mass last week for Catholic Education Week, the Gospel was the story of the ‘feeding of the five thousand’. It’s an iconic story. Jesus ends up with a big crowd who had been listening to him and the day had got away. People didn’t have time to make it home and the crowd had to be fed. According to the Gospel version, the disciples found one young enterprising bloke who had a few fish and some loaves of bread – probably to sell to the crowd. Jesus blessed the bread and fish and asked that they be distributed. That small portion fed everyone there with plenty left over. I’m not sure that the story was intended to be literally believed and I don’t think that is particularly important. There is so much in that story that is true and reflects the story of men and women of faith. This story reminds us that Jesus tells us, from not a lot, great things happen.
Or, as Paul Kelly puts it, ‘From Little Things, Big Things Grow’. This is the story of Catholic Education. The Sisters and Brothers who began so much of Catholic Education, started with almost nothing. Sister Vincent Whitty and Br Joseph Hogan who began a school for girls and boys in Bundaberg over a hundred years ago, did so on the smell of an oily rag. There was no money. Those early educators worked long days with big classes. They had to beg money from the local population to put food on the table and books in the hands of students. I remember my classes when I started with the Sisters of St Joseph and a couple of years later with the Christian Brothers were huge. I was in classes of 60-70 kids! That was not uncommon or noteworthy and it happened because there was no choice. Those early educators knew their work was important and made enormous personal sacrifices to get the job done. As we look back on 200 years of Catholic Education, we should acknowledge the hard work that has enabled our young people today to access a much higher standard of education today. Catholic Education is better, more inclusive, more respectful and gives young people greater access to a broader range of quality outcomes. But we stand on the shoulders of those who went before us – with all of their frailty and humanity. A few loaves and a couple of small fish, blessed and shared, have gone a very long way.
Olympics 2021 has been great to watch. So many great stories. At the school I worked at before Shalom, a young man called Pat Tiernan was a great kid. Loved his athletics and was pretty good. Just amazing to watch him in the 10,000m event in Tokyo. He ran an amazing race but just couldn’t finish off with the pack and, despite falling several times in the last 200m, nothing would stop him finishing the event. Those stories are we are always drawn to sport and its impact on life. Be in the race, dig deep and do everything possible to do your best.
Covid Requirements – with the latest lockdown news and a very changing environment, please remember that students should not be at school if they are suffering colds, coughs or sniffles. With the latest news that the lockdown in the SE is extended until Sunday, the restriction rules will continue to apply to our students and staff who were in the SE corner of the State from 1am July 31. This will continue until that lockdown ends or for 14 days – whichever comes first.

Student Welfare and Information
Damien House and McCormack House
We launched the two Houses on Friday, having an afternoon tea together. This is the first opportunity that the students have had to come together - with each other and with their House Coordinators.
It will be a balancing act for a while as the House Coordinators and the students still have commitments and activities coming up in their (present) respective Houses e.g. Shalom Day. However, we will give them all opportunities to do a few things together in their new Houses prior to next year.

Year 12 Formal Dinner Dance 28 May 2022
Date for the Formal is 28 May 2022, the Saturday after the Bundaberg Show Holiday. I have reminded the girls that their dresses should not be too revealing and that the boys are expected to wear formal attire, which means a suit.
Year 11 Leadership Days - CHANGE OF DATE
Due to the Retreat for the Year 11s shifting to the last week of September, we thought it best to move the Leadership Days as advertised to Term 4.
The date is to be advised.
Orientation Afternoon - CHANGE OF DATE
As one of our feeder primary schools has their Year 6 camp at the same time as our advertised Orientation afternoon, we have moved this event to November 9.
This is a very important afternoon - the Year 12s 2022, along with some Year 11s 2022, meet their “buddies” and participate in many “getting to know you” activities. This gives Year 7s 2022, the House Coordinators, the Pastoral Care teachers and the students assigned a buddy, the opportunity to meet each other prior to the Year 7s 2022 commencing at Shalom.
It is imperative that the secondary students attend this afternoon – so students need to make their workplace supervisors aware they are unavailable for a shift between 3:00pm and 5:30pm; training will need to be postponed for that afternoon etc.
Please contact me here at the College if you have any queries.

ROSA Awards
The ROSA (Recognition of Student Application) program is an award program which recognises student application to their studies. We value the importance of acknowledging students who are motivated, show perseverance and work diligently to reach their potential. The ‘goal posts’ for all our students are different, however all students are capable of achieving their own success targets. There are many ways we regularly encourage and reward the efforts of our students. The ROSA award allows for more of our students to be recognised amongst their peers.

Stall Holders Required for Movie Night
As many of you are aware for the last few years McAuley House has held a ‘Movie Night’ as our major fundraising event for our house charity CARINBUNDI. Because we were unable to hold the event last year we have decided to revamp our night and make it even more spectacular than ever.
This year we are holding a movie and mini handmade market evening on the 27 August 5:30-8pm. The event will be held here at Shalom and open to everyone. But to make it a big success we are after stall holders. So if you, family members or friends are into creating handmade items and would like to be a stall holder, make yourself some extra money, get your products and name out into the community and be part of making a difference to our house charity CARINBUNDI we would like to hear from you.
For example, we are after people who make and sell cards, candles, jewelry, artwork, body products, hair products, clothes, produce, cakes just to name a few. If you are interested in being part of this and want to set up and have your own stall at this event please contact Paula van Dalen through email vandalenp@shalomcollege.com or call me on 41558155 by Friday 6 August.

Year 10 Acts Camp
On Wednesday 21 July, 11 Shalom students travelled from Shalom to Rockhampton for the Year 10 2021 ACTS Camp. After a lengthy three hours travelling, and a tremendously early start, we excitedly arrived at Emmaus College. Upon arrival, we were kindly greeted by numerous schools from across the diocese of Rockhampton and were immediately made to feel at home.
There were a variety of discussions and guest speakers that were engaging and provided us all with ‘A Chance To Share’, the core value of ACTS. After the opening ceremony, students from Emmaus organised a series of fun icebreaker games between the numerous schools attending as we formed the start of some long-lasting friendships. As the day continued, these bonds grew stronger as we began to share our individual experiences.
Various students were inspired by the life story of Mrs Farr, who has overcome tremendous obstacles in life and maintained her faith in God throughout. Mrs Farr also informed us of the religious allegory Footprints in the Sand. A poem reminding us that when we are struggling with something in our life and feel alone, God is carrying us and holding us in his arms as we travel as one united with Christ. In addition to Mrs Farr was Father Rob, who further established the core value of ACTS while reiterating the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God.
Overall, it was a positive experience and, as students that attended, we would like to thank all those involved who made this incredible experience possible, especially Mrs Petersen, Ms Clark and Mr Sheehan.

Year 7 Blue Netball Team
Great weather, positive attitudes and shining netball skills saw the Year 7 Blue Netball team compete against BCC on Wednesday afternoon. The team played well for a convincing win, with the finishing scoring being 31-0. Team players reshuffled to give different positions a go and expand their skillset, with Layla Collins shooting five goals in the goal shooting position. Abby Berghammer zipped around the court in the centre position, and Nikita Clarey, Emily Somerfield and Ashlee McLean combined for a strong defence. Avah McNamara and Mia Porter showed strong goal shooting skills, with Kiahna Kruger showing speed in the wing attach position. Alexandra Churchill was unfortunately out injured but showed up to give her support to the team and assist in scoring the match.
Thanks again to Kendall Dodd for refereeing our game. We are looking forward to another great game next week!

Table Tennis Results
The Shalom Table Tennis Team made a strong start to the winter sport season, defeating St Lukes 2 six games to three. Michael Richardson was generous enough to cross over and help out an undermanned St Lukes team, giving us a 3-on-3 competition. Most matches were closely fought, with many going to three games. Isaac Maas won his three matches, coming from behind in his last match to defeat St Lukes strongest player. George Stelmack claimed two of his three matches, losing one in a close 3-gamer. Zacharry Morrish won one of three matches, and played well in all games. Players are commended for their commitment, persistence and overall exceptional behaviour.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!

We are God’s delight
Mother Teresa once said “It is not about doing great things in foreign lands, but about doing ordinary things with great love.” Doing ordinary things with great love has become very important in our lives since we have had to change and adapt to living with the constant concern of COVID.
St Thomas Aquinas wrote “God is sheer joy, and sheer joy demands company.
Parishioners are filled with sacredness in the ordinariness of their days, in their relationships, in the highs and lows and in the many changes brought about by the lifestyle changes that we all have had to embrace. But we continue to encourage each other, forgive each other, love each other and we see God in action.”
As Fr Daniel O’Leary writes “Alive in our churches there is still a deadly and deep-seated dualism dividing the holy from the human. The sacraments we celebrate in our parishes are celebrations of the holiness already within our lives – in the joy of a new birth, in the pain of our darkness, in the holiness of human love, in the desires of our hearts, in reconciliation with the wider community.”
All of this led to a shift in the way that church communities evolved. It is all about calling out the inner gifts of everyone, the encouraging of people to see themselves as made in God’s image. We are God’s delight. This is amazing: “we are God’s delight.” How wonderful is this? “It is about helping people understand that the inner conversion of our hearts is what Jesus is after, not just the improved religious observation or increased church attendance that we so often mistake for inner transformation.”
We as a Stewardship Parish are asked to pray for guidance in recognizing our God given gifts and talents and then offering these gifts in ministry within our church community. This is just one way we can utilize the gifts and talents that God has bestowed on each and every one of us. Isn’t it comforting to know “we are God’s delight, He demands our company.”
THE ELECTION OF PARISH STEWARDSHIP COUNCIL MEMBERS.
Following our last Summit, it was agreed that our Parish Stewardship Council would be re-formed.
This weekend at each Mass Community, you will be asked to nominate 2 members from your Mass Community, whom you believe would be suitable members of the Parish Council.
The Parish Stewardship Council will set the direction for our Parish into the future, in line with our Parish Vision.
We ask for your as you discern your nominations for this important parish ministry. Some of the Spiritual gifts your nomination may have- Faith, Servant Leadership, Wisdom, Generosity, Humility and Compassion.
"The annual parish "Good News" magazine will now become a bi-monthly bulletin of photos and brief news stories. If your parish group would like to be showcased in the bulletin, please send in your photos with a short note, and we will attempt to include it in the coming edition. We welcome your feedback as we trial this new format."
"Enjoy reading this year's edition of the 'Good News Magazine: 2020 New Vision', a look at the year that was and how we adapted to a new way of doing thins."
