Principal’s Reflection
Br Rochford for the many who remember him well, passed away peacefully this morning. He has now passed on to the God he so loved, please keep him in your prayers as we thank God for the wonderful gift he was to this community.
Brother loved Shalom Day and we remembered him when we celebrated on Thursday and by remembering what it is to be part of this community. On our FaceBook page are links that will take you to both a video of the Liturgy, which was beautifully done and the Inter-House Dance Competition. In the Liturgy, prepared by Mrs Taylor, the community was shown a really nice clip entitled ‘Eating Twinkies with God’.
I hope you can spend a few minutes having a look at this. The video challenges us about where we look for God. Often, people can get distracted by only looking for God in a Church or through prayer or waiting to find God in a life beyond this one. If we do that, we can miss God right beside us. We can fail to meet the challenge to create the Kingdom of God, right here, right now. As the clip reminds us, God can come to us in many different sizes, shapes and colours.
One of Brother’s many qualities was that he could find God in others. Many a student or staff member can tell a story of how Brother saw something in them when others did not or would not. Rest in peace, Brother. Shalom Chaverim.
Br Rochford…. Fond memories of him greeting students before school each morning to wish them a Happy Birthday
Bingo Roster – last week in the newsletter I put in a spectacularly unsuccessful plea to find additional volunteers who might be able to give an hour towards Bingo at the RSL on Wednesday nights. Bingo is a significant fund raiser for the College but only if we have some parents who are prepared to occasionally donate and hour or so of their time. We would love to hear from you if you are able.
I will be taking a bit over a week of Sabbatical Leave from Monday this week. I will participate in a Retreat which will give me a chance to reflect and maybe pray a bit more than I usually do. I will be back at the end of next week in time for Dance Night!

The aim of these conferences is to provide an opportunity for parents to meet with teachers to discuss the progress and learning needs of their children.
There will also be an extra half-day from 8.30am – 11.30am on Tuesday 7 September in the Loyola Centre for parents to book appointments with teachers who have three Core Studies classes. The teachers who these extra appointments are available for are : Sarah Murray, Gillian Deacon, Craig Sologinkin, Brett Hoskins, Emily Stevenson, Kirsty McCulloch, Michael Harris, Patrick Matters, Justine Blinco and Karen Lyons.
Conferences may be arranged online via Parent Lounge. The online Parent Teacher Interview booking facility opened at 8:00am on today and will close at 3:00pm on Tuesday 31 August to allow teachers to prepare for interviews.
Whilst the scheduled interview day is seen as an important communication between home and school, parents are welcome to arrange an interview with specific teachers at any time the need arises throughout the year. Please also remember that detailed information about your child’s progress is available on Parent Lounge under the ‘Curricular Activities Due’ tab. Here you can see the results and teacher feedback on every individual assessment item. This would be advantageous to review before attending the CS Learner Conferences.

Olivia Schneider
We would like to celebrate the success of 2020 graduate, Olivia Schneider. A fantastic representative of Shalom College between 2015 and 2020. Olivia has used her first year, post Year 12 graduation, to begin an exciting career in The Forces.
Olivia has finished basic training at Kapooka and was awarded best at PT (Physical Training). She was the only female to receive an award across two platoons. The staff that worked with Liv were impressed with her determination and attitude.
Olivia’s, parents are ex-service, so this makes them extra proud, as they know the challenges faced in the services. She is now waiting for her course in Wodonga VIC to become a Medic. Shalom College is incredibly proud of Olivia. She is an inspiration to all young people graduating, but especially for our young women.

Year 7 Blue Netball Team
A chilly Wednesday afternoon saw the Year 7 Blue Netball Team play against Gin Gin State High School. Both teams showed great sportsmanship and a competitive spirit. Between the speed of Abby Berghammer and the great shooting by Alexandra Churchill, all the team worked together to ensure a great game of netball was played. The overall score of 34-9 saw a win for the Year 7 Blue Netball Team.

Table Tennis Results
The Shalom Table Tennis team claimed a convincing win last week. They played an understrength Gin Gin side who was only able to field two players, and so had to forfeit a number of matches. None the less, Shalom won every match that counted in two games – although some were well fought and very close. Well done to Zacharry Morrish, Isaac Maas and George Stelmack on their competitive and tenacious play.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!

Liturgy, Sacraments and R.C.I.A Co-ordinator
Nourished by Word and Sacrament…
Words are powerful. Some are informative but others come from the centre of our being and define ourselves and can give definite shape to our future and the future of others. For example, “I love you.” “You sing beautifully. Have you ever thought of using your gift to bring joy to others?” “You have cancer.” “I’m sorry, your services are no longer required.” “I, John, take you Betty to be my wife.” “Not guilty!” Your response or reaction to words impacts your future. Words can change us. Words open up new possibilities for new experiences. They also preserve our memories of the past, change relationships and worlds, break our hearts and mend them, cause us grief and give us hope. Words move us to action. Words are transformative. In the story of creation, “God said: Let there be light… and so it happened.” (Gen 1: 3-30) God’s word and actions were powerful, united, and affected change. “God’s word became flesh and dwelt amongst us.” (John 1: 14) Jesus, the living Word, speaks to us today. The words we proclaim as “The word of the Lord” in every liturgy, then, have the power to transform us and move us to action. The story of faith handed on from generation to generation in the scriptures, words remembered, gives us hope that God’s word for us today, as it was for our ancestors, will also be active in our lives. The word of God proclaimed affects a change within each of us if we listen with the ears of faith. Announcing the word of God means announcing a new and different future, a future full of hope, thanks to the life, death and resurrection of Jesus. The liturgy challenges us and enables us to change our lives, our communities, our Church, so that we may more deeply reflect the gospel of Jesus. God’s Word as transformative and powerful is no more profound than in the Institution Narrative spoken by the priest in the Eucharistic Prayer. The priest holds the bread (wine) and says: “Take this all of you and eat (drink) of it. This is my body (blood).” God’s word, speaking through Jesus, with the power of the Holy Spirit working in and through the priest, affected a change from bread to Body, from wine to Blood, from human to Divine. We believe this to be true, Amen. Talk about being nourished by words that transform, affect change, and are powerful and active! The liturgy has it all. Receiving the Word and sacrament in the Eucharist transforms us into the Body of Christ. Sometimes, however, there are too many words in the liturgy, as in life. In those moments God’s word is heard in the silences. (Inspired by the words of Bishop Robert Barron and Sr Mary Catherine Hilkert, OP)
