Principal’s Reflection

It continues to drive my wife crazy that almost anywhere we go in Queensland, it is a pretty common experience that I will run into a young, or not so young, person now, that I taught or had something to do with in one of the ten schools in which I have had the privilege of working. It is a really nice thing for me that young people I have worked with are still happy to have a chat and catch up. That experience always reminds me that Teaching is a wonderful profession. Last week we celebrated ‘World Teachers’ Day’. It deserves to be celebrated. I know I am biased in saying that but, there is no doubt, good teachers can make a profound difference. I would like to share with you two stories on that theme:

The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to reveal the problem with education. He argued, ‘What’s a kid going to learn from someone who decided that his best option in life was to become a school teacher?’

He reminded the other dinner guests what’s often said about teachers: ‘Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.’ To stress his point he said to another guest, ‘You’re a teacher, Susan. Be honest. What do you make?’

Susan, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, ‘You want to know what I make? I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. I make a C+ feel like the winner of the country’s highest honour.

I make kids sit through 40 minutes of study in absolute silence. You want to know what I make? I made kids wonder. I make them question. I make them criticise. I make them apologise and mean it.

I make them write. I make them read, read, read. I make them do their best in maths and perfect their final drafts in English.

I make them understand that if you have the brains, and follow your heart, and if someone ever tries to judge you by what you make, you must pay no attention because they just didn’t learn.’

Susan paused and then continued. ‘You want to know what I make?’ I make a difference. What do you make?’

And, another one. Particularly for all of my wonderful colleagues in the profession.

Solar Project – I mentioned in last week’s Newsletter some of the benefits the College, and the world, is enjoying from our Solar Project. Last week I learned that this project has been nominated for a national award -

https://www.ecogeneration.com.au/cec-solar-awards-finalist-shalom-catholic-college-bundaberg-qld-a-lesson-in-energy/?utm_source=Ecogeneration&utm_campaign=08f4dd80b9-EMAIL_CAMPAIGN_2017_01_25_COPY_01&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_cd04baabb5-08f4dd80b9-137136069

Part Time Work – a lot of our students enjoy the benefits of part time work – and there is so much to gain from that. That said, could I really encourage parents to be very careful of their working children getting over committed? I learned about a couple of cases last week where some of our young people are working long shifts to 10pm and then trying to front up to school with work done and ready for more. It is easy for students to get attracted to the short term benefits of cash in hand. I hope they all keep in mind the longer view of where they would like to be in five or ten years’ time. I hope it won’t be working in an entry level job in fast food. It is a shame that some employers are guilty of over-using young people.

Below is some guidance and information relating to the Netflix program – Squid Game.

Below is a resource from an online source for your consideration.

Information for Parents

“Content that has an age restriction / rating, has so for a reason. Viewing of age-inappropriate content can have a lasting effect on a child’s emotional health. Whether children watch content with a parent, search for it themselves, come across it accidentally, or get told about it in the playground, if they do not have the ability to fully understand it and cope with it, it can cause harm.”

Also, remember that the eSafety Commissioner https://www.esafety.gov.au/ has many resources relating to safe online behaviours.

Orientation Afternoon

Thank you to the Year 11s for their participation in the Leadership Day run by Bernie Kelly.

Orientation Afternoon for the 2022 Year 7s is next Tuesday 9 November. All Year 11s need to be there; I have given them plenty of notice to change work rosters etc. It is a very important afternoon for our newest members of the community along with their parents. We need to be a welcoming community with everyone attending.

I am grateful to the Year 10s who have volunteered to be tour guides for the parents that afternoon.

House News

Last Friday we held Pastoral Care classes across the ten Houses. On Thursday 4 November we will have all ten Houses hold House assemblies, along with PC time afterwards.

The senior Phoenix Cup competition was held a fortnight ago and McCormack formed a team and won the competition! So that was great to see.

Shalom College Award Ceremonies (Academic and Sports)

Awards for 2021 will again be presented in front of peers, in year levels, filmed and released in an easy to access, online format. This year, COVID 19 pending, we would like to invite parents and some special guests to be part of the ‘live’ presentations. Please note the schedule below, if you would like to attend. A list of students, receiving awards, will be e-mailed out next week. Please note, due to the ‘live’ filming aspect, parents and guests will not be able to enter late or leave the Performing Arts Theatre early. Major awards will also be given out in Year levels where possible, to enable parents to attend one session for each student, where possible. We look forward to celebrating the ‘excellence’ achieved by so many Shalom students this College year, so please look out for the published, online version, in its entirety before the end of term.

Mission

Giving Tree

Jesus directs us throughout the Gospels to share what we have with others. Not just our friends and families but with those we don’t know. In one parable Jesus reminds us that to experience eternal life with God we have to reach out to those in the need.

Each year Shalom students give generously to our annual Giving Tree Appeal and this year we will once again be participating in this worthy cause. On 11 November we ask that all students bring an unwrapped gift, gift card or money to donate to St Vincent de Paul through our Giving Tree. These items will be distributed to families in the Bundaberg area who otherwise could not provide these extras for their families over Christmas.

Year 12 Graduation

Our Year 12 Graduation will be held in the Sports Centre this year at 10 am on 18 November.

This is an invitation only event this year due to COVID restrictions. Families have been allocated tickets that need to be presented for scanning upon arrival. The ceremony will be live streamed so additional family members and friends can watch as well. The link will be posted on Facebook and on our website. We are looking forward to celebrating with this wonderful group of young people.

ROSA Awards

The ROSA (Recognition of Student Application) program is an award program which recognises student application to their studies. We value the importance of acknowledging students who are motivated, show perseverance and work diligently to reach their potential. The ‘goal posts’ for all our students are different, however all students are capable of achieving their own success targets. There are many ways we regularly encourage and reward the efforts of our students. The ROSA award allows for more of our students to be recognised amongst their peers.

Australian Jobs 2021

The Australian Jobs publication provides an overview of trends in the Australian labour market and is designed to step you through all aspects of labour market issues. This is an extremely valuable resource for job seekers and those considering future study/training.

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on the labour market and there is now more competition for certain jobs. Accordingly, it is now more important than ever to understand the availability of employment opportunities across industries and occupations, what employers are looking for and to gain an understanding of the current labour market.

The second half of the publication provides a step-by-step process on how to find a job. From where vacancies are located, to what employers are looking for, demonstrating how formal education can help you achieve career goals and outlining what government programs are available to assist you.

It is important to remember that the labour market can change quickly. It isn’t easy to forecast future labour market conditions and it isn’t recommended to base employment and training decisions solely on predicted shortages. It is far better to train in an area in which you have an interest and aptitude than choosing a career solely based on expectations about future conditions.

Access the Australian Jobs Guide here.

Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award

The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award is an internationally recognised program for young people aged between 14 and 25 years old, building their skills to equip them for life and work.

Taking part in the Award isn’t easy – it requires commitment over time – but it is simple to get started and after all of the time and effort participants put into the program, they will have achieved something special of which they can be very proud.

Participants have the chance to:

  • Design their own Award program
  • Set goals and record progress
  • Make a positive impact on the lives of others through community service
  • Learn valuable practical and social skills for career development
  • Be challenged by an Adventurous Journey
  • Connect with other Award Participants at home and overseas

Although it is a significant commitment, often participants can continue with activities they are already taking part in, such as sports or volunteering, and count these towards achieving their Award. Otherwise, it could be an opportunity to try something new and develop a passion for something different.

The Bronze Award is the first step to getting involved in The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award and you can then continue your Award by undertaking Silver and then Gold Levels.

In 2021, Shalom College Bronze award students completed an Adventurous Journey in canoeing on the Sunshine Coast. Students at other levels (Silver and Gold) completed Adventurous Journeys on the South Passage, a sail training ship, while others did a combination of bushwalking and canoeing Adventurous Journeys. In previous years, I have taken students on the Thorsbourne Trail in North Queensland, the Victorian High Plains, and the Kokoda Track in PNG.

Over the next month or so I will be holding a meeting at lunchtime to talk about the Dukes program for next year. Please keep an eye out on the notices on SIA for the venue, date and time. Otherwise, feel free to contact me by email david_eke@shalomcollege.com if you have further questions.

Kurt Hahn, the founder of Outward Bound once said, “There is more to us than we know. If we can be made to see it, perhaps for the rest of our lives we will be unwilling to settle for less”. This is the challenge of the Dukes award.

New coastal outlet feasibility investigation for Alowishus!

Year 11 Business students welcomed guest presenters from Alowishus to gather primary data for their assessment task, investigating the feasibility of a potential coastal outlet for Alowishus at Bargara. Students developed a series of interview questions that Owner, Tracey McPhee, and General Manager, Marcus Sorbello, responded to, sharing insight into their marketing objectives, the business’s target markets and promotional strategies, as well as their branding and operational processes.

Tracey congratulated the students on the quality and professional calibre of the questions they presented, complimenting them on their understanding of the depth and importance of the marketing function of a business.

Year 11 Business students were also thrilled to get some inside breaking news scoops, prior to being made public, including the new Alowishus ‘grab and go’ store located in Bundaberg’s medical precinct, and some new and exciting news regarding the group’s other brand, Bert’s Bar.

The students will now use this information to inform their analysis, evaluation and recommendations, and develop a Feasibility Report to present their findings. Tracey indicated she is very keen to read through the finished documents to assist in future decision making for the business regarding potential new outlets!

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers

At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.

Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.

For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.

Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).

No experience required!

It is a holy and a wholesome thought to pray for the dead … 2 Maccabees 12.46

Two Feasts are upon us and we joyously celebrate them both on Monday and Tuesday. All Saints and All Souls give us the opportunity to remember those family and friends who have gone before us and provide for us the example of lives well lived and the hope of an immortal life to come.

The Christian is not phased by death. Yes, the Christian grieves the loss of loved ones but does not despair that they are gone forever. Their lives, their example, their influence remain with us. It is part of our memory and it is a good part of our memory. Their lives have changed as have ours by their physical departure but their spirits are not taken away.

“Being a good person does not depend on your religion, status in life, wealth, skin colour, political views or culture. It depends on how you treat others.” The people we remember particularly on the first two days of November and during the month traditionally dedicated to the Holy Souls are remembered for that one thing – how they treated us and others. Their goodness was not tied to any attribute or accomplishment but to the simple Golden Rule – Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

And so, as we celebrate this month, let our hearts and spirits be joyful. We have much to celebrate as we remember those we have loved

and those who have loved us; let us pray with and for these good people who, though departed, beckon us on and encourage us to live our lives as well as possible. As St Paul reminds us, we are all saints. And, there are saints present with us, alive and presencing God to us in everyday interactions and relationships. Fully believing this reality, the Christian cannot but rejoice in the wonderful com-union of all believers; the Christian cannot but proclaim:

For all the saints who from their labours rest,
Who You triumphant before the world confessed
Your Name, O Jesus, be forever blessed.
Alleluia! We are grateful! Praise God! Alleluia!
