Principal’s Reflection

“Keeping Up Appearances” was a show I used to watch. It featured Mrs Bucket who insisted her name was pronounced ‘Bouquet’. She pretended to be a member of the English gentry but was really, in fact, solidly middle class. She was not happy in her own skin. The Gospel we heard yesterday could fairly be titled, ‘Not Keeping Up Appearances’. In this passage from St Mark, Jesus lines up the religious leaders of his day and gives them both barrels. It might surprise many that the sin Jesus most powerfully and often condemned was Hypocrisy – not moral laxness. Jesus could not bear hypocrisy. Nor should we. The Scribes, who Jesus condemns in this passage from Mark, were the lawyers of their day. They were often Rabbis as well – a cross between a priest and a jurist. Most of them were Pharisees and, while some of them were undoubtedly good people, it is clear that many of them were frauds. They seemed to hunt in packs and demand respect rather than earn it. Throughout the whole life of Jesus, they were among his most watchful and determined opponents. The problem with religious, political, social or even family power, and the position that brings, it that it is so seductive. The more powerful we become, the more we can think everything is our due. We can take our eye off the Giver of all gifts and avoid our responsibility to share with those who are left with little.

This coming Thursday is our ‘Giving Tree Assembly’. This is a great tradition at Shalom where we ask every student to purchase a gift suitable for a child of their age or younger. These gifts will be distributed locally at Christmas by the St Vincent de Paul society to families in need. SVDP are one of those many Church run organizations who remind all of us of our need to be less consumed with our own welfare and more aware of our need to reach out, often, to those much less fortunate.

Rhys Burnett left Shalom at the end of Yr 11 in 2016. Rhys was a lovely young man in his time at Shalom but battled life on many fronts. Very sadly, he passed away recently at the age of 20 from ill health. Rhys had a condition called Neurofibromatosis (NF). It is a set of three complex genetic conditions that cause tumors to form on nerve cells throughout the body. Apparently, it affects more than 10,000 people in Australia. The attached document has been provided to us by Rhys’s family to help raise awareness of this disease which has now touched this community. Also included here is a reflection from Maria, Rhy’s mum which was shared at the Memorial service held at Neilson’s beach. May a loving God hold him close.

Panadol at Shalom – because of State Government Health & Safety rules, we are no longer permitted to administer Panadol to students. I think this is one of those rules that has good intent but will have unintended poor outcomes for us but there is not much I can do – I have tried. If you wish your child to be given Panadol at school, we need parents to bring in a labelled packet which can be kept at Student Reception. I know this is a clumsy and difficult procedure but it is one that I haven’t been able to avoid.

Vaping in Australia - Alcohol and Drug Foundation - ADF

What are Australian health organisations saying? Several key Australian health organisations, such as the Australian Medical Association (AMA), Cancer Council Australia and the Australian Council on Smoking and Health (ACOSH) have published positions on e-cigarettes, sharing the following messages:

Vaping amongst young people - Alcohol and Drug Foundation

Australian surveys show vaping by young people has increased. 16, 17 Young people who vape nicotine are exposed to a toxic chemical that can harm adolescent brain development (the brain continues to develop until the age of 25) and lead to dependance. 2 There is also some evidence that vaping nicotine is associated with later tobacco use among teenagers. 20-24

Other News

In the last newsletter I relayed that McCormack House assembled a senior team to play in the Phoenix Cup.

Jordan Roebuck, Preston Cox and Zane Groves with the Phoenix Cup

Last Thursday, 4 November, our ten Houses held their House assemblies and Damien House and McCormack House organized some ‘getting to know you’ games with the PC classes across these two Houses. There is a very positive atmosphere in the Houses and so they will be ready to go in 2022.

I must thank those students who were brave to change their Houses; I am very appreciative.

Students engaging in Damien and McCormack Houses’ assemblies and activities

In the last week of Term 4 we will only have Years 7 – 9 attending school. On Monday 29 November we will be holding the Junior Phoenix Cup in the morning and in the afternoon we will have the students at the pool for the afternoon.

Class Allocations for 2022

As timetabling for 2022 is not finalised there is no available information about teachers and class allocations. Your student will receive their timetable before the commencement of Term 1, 2022. Due to the size and complexity of our school and timetable structure we cannot cater for individual teacher or class preferences.

Middle School & Senior School

Many Year 10 courses have been adjusted this year to allow a taster of equivalent Senior subjects. Some students may have found that Semester 2 subject choices have caused them to revise preferences for next year. There will be an opportunity to make an application for change in the coming weeks, this will be communicated in the Daily Notices. It must be noted that timetable construction is based upon choices already received this may mean that changes cannot be accommodated due to class or student numbers, or combinations of subjects.

Year 8 and Year 9 students work in elective subjects in Semester 2 may have caused some students to rethink preferences for 2022. There will be an opportunity to make an application for change in the coming weeks, this will be communicated in the Daily Notices.

Year 12 - Access to ATAR Scores

QTAC will release ATAR scores into student ATAR Portal accounts at 9am on 17 December. Students who registered with QTAC to complete university preferences would have received an email prompting them to create an ATAR Portal account. ATAR Scores are not posted to students. All Year 12 students who are ATAR eligible should have created their ATAR Portal by now to ensure they receive their score.

The following video will outline the very simple process you should follow to set up your ATAR portal account: https://www.qtac.edu.au/atar/ Please note that the ATAR Portal is NOT the same as your child’s myQCE Learning Account. Students will need to be registered for both.

The myQCE Learning Account records student results for Year 11 and 12, including their External Assessments results. Year 12 students will receive their Senior Education Profile (QCE, Senior Statement) in their myQCE Learning Account on 17 December.

Year 12 - FAQ’s

Please find attached a copy of Frequently Asked Questions that may be useful for Year 12 students once they have finished school. A copy of this will also be included in their Portfolio which they receive on Graduation Day.

Year 12 – Wednesday 17 November

This day is a compulsory day of attendance for all Year 12 students. Mr McMahon will be sending out a letter to all Year 12 parents/students with details of the program for this day.

Year 10 End of Semester Two Examinations

The Year 10 examination timetable is attached. Please note that Year 10 students must attend school up to and including Thursday 25 November. Students who have taken Specialist Maths have an exam on Friday morning but may leave school after this exam. All other Year 10 students are not required to attend school on Friday although there will be supervision at school provided for those students unable to make alternative arrangements.

Students should expect to sit outstanding examinations and complete other outstanding assessment tasks at the direction of class teachers in any available examination session during the examination block, including the following week if necessary (29/11/20 - 3/12/20).

Year 11 Exam Block – 24 November – 26 November

Year 11 students will participate in an exam block from 24 - 26 November. Students participating in this exam block will begin Unit 3 assessment. This assessment is summative and as such will contribute towards the ATAR score. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.

During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.

Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block.

We wish our students all the best with their studies.

Year 12 External Exams

External Exams for Year 12 General Subjects will occur over the period from Friday 22 October – Tuesday 16 November.

Attached is some important information about this time including:

  • the External Assessment Timetable
  • Directions for Students
  • External Exam Equipment List
  • Student Guide to External Assessment

Could parents and students please familiarise themselves with these important documents in preparation for the External Exam period?

Students need only attend school for the exams they are sitting during the External Exam Block (26 Oct – 17 Nov). Students who are required to complete outstanding work may also be required to attend school during the External Exam block as organised by the relevant classroom teacher. More information about activities that will occur on the three days after the External Exam Block (ie 17 Nov – 19 Nov) will be distributed soon.

Good luck with your study and your exams!

Shalom College Award Ceremonies (Academic and Sports)

Awards for 2021 will again be presented in front of peers, filmed, and released in an easy to access, online format. This year, we have invited parents and some special guests to be part of the ‘live’ presentations. Please note the schedule, (below) if you would like to attend and read on for instructions. A list of awardees was e-mailed to all parents and students. Please note that these sessions are purely for the filming of the award presentations, so not a polished event and there will only be so many seats available to parents on the day. Unfortunately, there is no room for extended family and friends, but thankfully a link to the final production will be forwarded, which we would highly recommend to parents, as the preferred viewing option.

Please note some finer details about the Award Lists;

  • The lists e-mailed out to students are purely to give students an indication to sit to the front and for parents to know that their child will be part of the ceremony
  • Like any ceremony, there will be some unknown special awards and a complete list of award winners will be published in the newsletter and on Face Book, at the culmination of all award presentations
  • Students listed for an Academic or Studentship award, may also receive a Major Award or Sports Award.
  • Students not receiving an Academic or Studentship award but receiving a Sports or Major Award, have been added to the bottom of the lists as receiving a 'Special Award'
  • Thanks to new technologies, students are now awarded Academic Excellence according to Grade Point Average, across the year and all subjects, rather than a pre-determined number of A's.
  • Year 12 will have all Academic, Major Awards and Sports Awards presented on Wednesday 17 November
  • Years 7-11 will receive some Sports Awards at House level e.g. Best and Fairest Team Awards and Wide Bay Certificates

If attending the following ceremonies, please note they are being filmed live and the following instructions will have to be applied, for the smooth running of these sessions.

  • Parents and Guests will not be able to enter late or leave the Performing Arts Theatre early (unless instructed by a staff member, controlling the door between segments)
  • Parents are to use the QR code, at the entrance of the Performing Arts Precinct
  • Parents then wait in the foyer for staff members to show them through to their seats
  • Phones must be turned to silent and flashes cannot be used during filming (there will be photos taken at the end of filming, which will be published in the newsletter and on Face Book)
  • Please note that there will be no rehearsal, therefore, time at the beginning will be dedicated to the organisation of students, which will prove for an organic experience
  • Sessions are organised in to 'Periods' according to normal timetabled lessons (published at the front of each student's Record Book)

Either way, we look forward to celebrating the ‘excellence’ achieved by so many Shalom students this College year, so please look out for the published, online version, in its entirety before the end of term. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support of our wonderful students, and consequently, Shalom College.

Year 12 Graduation

Our Year 12 Graduation will be held in the Sports Centre this year at 10 am on 18 November.

This is an invitation only event this year due to COVID restrictions. Families have been allocated tickets that need to be presented for scanning upon arrival. The ceremony will be live streamed so additional family members and friends can watch as well. The link will be posted on Facebook and on our website. We are looking forward to celebrating with this wonderful group of young people.

Giving Tree

Jesus directs us throughout the Gospels to share what we have with others. Not just our friends and families but with those we don’t know. In one parable Jesus reminds us that to experience eternal life with God we have to reach out to those in the need.

Each year Shalom students give generously to our annual Giving Tree Appeal and this year we will once again be participating in this worthy cause. On 11 November we ask that all students bring an unwrapped gift, gift card or money to donate to St Vincent de Paul through our Giving Tree. These items will be distributed to families in the Bundaberg area who otherwise could not provide these extras for their families over Christmas.

Chaplaincy Breakfast

On Tuesday 2 November five representatives from Shalom College attended the Scripture Union Chaplaincy Breakfast held at the Rowers Club. This breakfast is held each year to raise much needed funds to enable the continuation of the School Chaplaincy program which is run in our State schools.

The breakfast was such an enjoyable morning appreciating and acknowledging how much Chappy’s do for our community. Being able to hear and witness the joy and relationships created through this program and career path has truly enlightened my respect and gratitude towards the amazing people who dedicate their time to help students and teachers in our schools in Bundaberg. A huge thankyou to the Rowers Club for providing us delicious hospitality and welcoming service.

Make Your Career in Mining

Demand for Australia’s minerals and metals – and highly skilled employees – is continuing to expand. The industry added another 40,000 jobs in the past five years and over the next couple of years aims to add 5000 new apprenticeships. With more than 100 careers across the mining industry, opportunities exist on mine sites, in high-tech remote mining centres, in science as well as computer laboratories – or an mix of locations.

With global demand for energy and infrastructure rising to meet an ever-growing world population, society is consuming more minerals and metals than ever before.

Australia’s miners produce more than 45 minerals used in the manufacture of products ranging from smartphones, electric cars, space travel, solar panels, glass and concrete to golf clubs, wind turbines and medical implants.

Renewable energy is also driving demand for resources. Australia is fast becoming the supplier of choice for a low carbon future, whether it be silver, silicon and copper for solar panels, lithium for battery storage and electric vehicles, or vanadium, cobalt and rare earths for wind turbines.

So whatever your age, gender identity, cultural background, physical ability or caring responsibilities, with so many jobs on offer there has never been a better time to consider a career in Australian mining.

Access the Make Your Career in Mining Careers Guide here or alternately call into the Pathways Office to collect a copy.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers

At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.

Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.

For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.

Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).

No experience required!
