Principal’s Reflection
When we say ‘good bye’ and it’s difficult, reminds us that good relationships should never be taken for granted.
Last week, we farewelled 190 Year 12 students and many families who’ve had a strong connection to this community. There was certainly some sadness but also plenty of excitement and a general sense that this was the right time to move on. We wish all of those young women and men every blessing as they move to the next stage of their lives. The class of 2021 have made a wonderful contribution to the life and culture of Shalom. In just a couple of weeks, we will also farewell twelve teachers from our staff. The following staff are retiring from the profession and we wish them every possible success and happiness as they move into the next phase of their lives –
Ms Deb Bolam, Ms Helen Stanley, Ms Lucia Briggs, Mr Jason Baulch, Mr Pat Quirk and Ms Jenny Hawe
Shalom is a much better place for their years of expertise and desire to make a positive difference in the lives of young people – and they have! We can’t thank them enough but we certainly wish each of them well as they, like the Year 12s, move in different directions in 2022. We have a number of other staff who will move on to different schools in Bundaberg and elsewhere in 2022. They will leave Shalom with our sincere thanks and best wishes –
Ms Janelle Ivers, Ms Amanda Sharpe, Ms Kate Sinclair, Ms Varsha Dahiya, Mr Gianni Balatti -Hill and Ms Mel Nunn
In completing staffing for next year there have been a number of new leadership appointments –
Senior School Coordinator – Ms Trish Allen
Senior Humanities Coordinator – Ms Stephanie Ray
Senior Maths Coordinator – Mr Graham O’Shanesy
Core Studies B Coordinator – Ms Wendy Egan
Hogan House Coordinator – Mr David Bond
Lingiari House Coordinator – Mr Michael Ray
Damien House Coordinator – Mr Jason Egan
McCormack House Coordinator – Ms Karli Lancaster
Rice House Coordinator – Mr Scott Whitelaw
We are very fortunate to have secured the services of fourteen new staff for 2022 who, I am very confident, will be outstanding educators. I will introduce all of them to you early in the new year.
The Year 10s & 11s will conclude their academic year at the end of this week as they conclude exams. The Year 11s will be on exam block from Wednesday. The Year 10s will have exams but they will be expected to be at school each day.
The Year 7-9s will enjoy an alternate program the following week up until Thursday. Details of the arrangements for these students are published later in the Newsletter.
Vaping seems to be causing every Principal I speak to a degree of difficulty. I would urge parents to be vigilant about this at home and do everything possible to ensure that your child does not indulge in this practice. At Shalom, as much as I am generally not in favour of mandatory punishments, anyone who vapes, carries a vape, stands with those who do vape, will be automatically suspended for five days. A student should not expect at Shalom to be suspended twice.

Student Welfare and Information
Week 9 Program
Monday 29 November Years 7 - 9
The day will be divided into two sections
Morning session
Students will be in teams in their respective Houses competing for the Junior Phoenix Cup.
Students may wear their sports uniform but need to bring hats, water bottles and sunscreen (compulsory).
Afternoon Session
After lunch here at the College, the students will be going down to the Norville swimming pool for an afternoon of fun.
We do request that students wear appropriate swimwear and have “rashies” to save being sunburnt.
Students will not be able to use the pool canteen.
Tuesday 30 November to Thursday 2 December
We will be running three days of alternative activities (Tues, Wed, Thurs). Students will not have their normal timetabled teachers but will be divided into groups to undertake activities in their different subject areas. Each subject faculty will prepare activities for the students to do.
Students will wear their formal uniform unless they have a sports activity – they will be informed when they will need to bring a sports uniform.
Important Information for parents and students
Information for parents on Vaping
Unfortunately, this has become an issue amongst teenagers and Shalom College is not immune to students vaping. I have attached information for parents about the perils for our young people if they choose to vape.
Because this has become an issue in our College, we need to make it very clear that we will not tolerate vaping at the school. The consequence will be severe to send a clear message to our students.
If a student is caught with a vape, or is caught vaping, or brings a vape into the school to hand it over to another student, it will be an automatic external 5 day suspension.
Please find below some information about vaping provided by Kylie Cahill, Student Protection Officer, Diocesan Office, Rockhampton.

Vaping in Australia - Alcohol and Drug Foundation - ADF
What are Australian health organisations saying? Several key Australian health organisations, such as the Australian Medical Association (AMA), Cancer Council Australia and the Australian Council on Smoking and Health (ACOSH) have published positions on e-cigarettes, sharing the following messages:
https://adf.org.au/talking-about-drugs/parenting/vaping-youth/vaping-australia/
https://adf.org.au/talking-about-drugs/parenting/vaping-youth/vaping-youth-2/
Vaping amongst young people - Alcohol and Drug Foundation
Australian surveys show vaping by young people has increased. 16, 17 Young people who vape nicotine are exposed to a toxic chemical that can harm adolescent brain development (the brain continues to develop until the age of 25) and lead to dependance. 2 There is also some evidence that vaping nicotine is associated with later tobacco use among teenagers. 20-24

Punctuality
Thank you to those students who are striving to be punctual for school – the school day commences at 8:35am and students do need to be here by that time.
Thank you for the standard of grooming of your children. I do need to stress, however, that students are not permitted to wear their sports uniform to school. Permission needs to be sought if they do need to wear a uniform due to an injury e.g. wearing a moon boot. Not having a clean uniform is not an acceptable excuse etc. If, for some reason, this happens, the student needs to bring a note and come in to see me before they go into school. A uniform infringement consequence will be issued. The note explains what has led to the student being out of their formal uniform but does not excuse them. I appreciate your assistance in this matter.
Chewing gum is a problem amongst our students. They tend to spit it out anywhere or “park it” under desks. On occasions gum has been left on a chair which has ended up on hair which means it gets on student’s clothing. I can’t imagine any parent being happy to get it off their son’s pants or daughter’s dress or skirt. Last week, staff in the gym had to scrape gum off the gym floor which is carpeted.
Our consequences for chewing gum at school, mostly it is in classes, is a Friday afternoon detention. Some students are given a warning by their class teacher but when found chewing again will be given a detention – can’t be fairer than that.
Some students who have braces will have a pass which they are expected to show to their class teacher should they need to chew. However, this is something we will review next year.
Grooming
Please note the following
No acrylic nails; no nail polish
No false eyelashes or eyelash extensions
Boys always need to be clean shaven
Hair (boys) cannot be long – see Record Book for further details
Hair (girls) needs to be tied back – some girls have longer bob styles but if it is long enough to be tied back it needs to be
One set of earrings only (girls); no nose rings; no rings, bracelets
We will enforce our standards right up to the last day and we thank parents for their continuing support.

Year 10 - Academic Integrity Course
During this week’s Year 10 10 Exam Block students will be given time to complete their online QCAA Academic Integrity Course when they are not in a scheduled exam. We ask that students please bring their device with them so that they can complete this. It is important that all Year 10 students complete this course as they begin their senior studies.
All Year 10 students by now should have registered for their QCAA myQCE Learning Account. New students were asked to attend to this last week via student notices. A step by step instruction guide was included to assist students with the registration process. If you child has not completed their registration and needs assistance, please have them contact me at Student Reception.
If your student is unable to complete their online Academic Integrity Course during this coming week the instruction guide below will assist them in completing this task.

Year 10 End of Semester Two Examinations
The Year 10 examination timetable is attached. Please note that Year 10 students must attend school up to and including Thursday 25 November. Students who have taken Specialist Maths have an exam on Friday morning but may leave school after this exam. All other Year 10 students are not required to attend school on Friday although there will be supervision at school provided for those students unable to make alternative arrangements.
Students should expect to sit outstanding examinations and complete other outstanding assessment tasks at the direction of class teachers in any available examination session during the examination block, including the following week if necessary (29/11/20 - 3/12/20).
Year 11 Exam Block – 24 November – 26 November
Year 11 students will participate in an exam block from 24 - 26 November. Students participating in this exam block will begin Unit 3 assessment. This assessment is summative and as such will contribute towards the ATAR score. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.
During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.
Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.

Changes To Fitness Centre Student Usage For 2022
Recent changes to Workplace Health and Safety regulations governing the use of school-based Fitness Centres requires us to implement a number of changes for students using the Fitness Centre for general training before and/or after school.
Please be advised of the following important changes and requirements for 2022:
All students wishing to use the Fitness Centre before and/or after school MUST complete a new Fitness Centre Induction. A re-induction will be required for students who may have already completed one previously. Times for Induction Sessions with qualified staff will be advertised at the beginning of Term 1, 2022. Students MUST complete a new induction prior to being permitted to use the Fitness Centre before and/or after school.
Staff rostered on to supervise the Fitness Centre during before and after school (Ms Lauren Ree and Mr Jarrod Burnett) are required to provide adequate supervision to all students utilising the centre. In order to provide this supervision, no more than 20 students will be permitted to use the Fitness Centre for training before and/or after school, unless they are being supervised by another sporting team coach.
To enable adequate supervision before and/or after school, NO Power Lifting or CrossFit-type activities (any type of training that involves less than 6 repetitions) are to be conducted unless under direct supervision by a qualified coach that is also present. The Fitness Centre Supervisor is unable to supervise these activities while actively supervising other users of the gym.
Students using the Fitness Centre before and/or after school must also adhere to the following requirements:
Sign in via the Google Doc found on the Fitness Centre iPad (which will be cross referenced with the induction list)
Use a towel on all benches and machines
Demonstrate appropriate behaviour and conduct at all times
Follow all instructions and requests from the Fitness Centre Supervisor
If you have any further questions or concerns about these changes, please do not hesitate to Melinda Pearson, Learning Area Coordinator - PE. [Ph: (07) 4155 8123 Email: melinda_pearson@shalomcollege.com]

Instrumental Music
Welcome to the penultimate week of school! Band rehearsals and performances have concluded for 2021 but instrumental music lessons are still running during Week 8. This is a great opportunity for students to talk to their respective teachers about holiday music projects and personal growth music activities.
It is also a great time to consider the maintenance of your instrument and stocking up on supplies that you will need for 2022. Brass players should take the time this summer to disassemble their instrument and give it a bath in warm, soapy water. You can also purchase fresh bottles of valve oil, tuning slide grease, trombone spray bottles & slide cream from our local music shop or multiple online stores. Woodwind players should be washing their instrument pull-thru and can purchase new reeds and cork grease also available at your local music store and online shops. Guitar and electric bass players should make sure electronics and instrument leads are in working order. Drummers with instruments at home could spend some time learning how to tune and maintain their drum set.
Metronomes and tuners are essential for all practicing music students. A perfect Christmas gift for a budding musician. These can be purchased as separate items, or you can download an app for your phone, iPad or computer. All music students should also have a 2B pencil and staff paper in their music folder.
As a reminder and unless specifically instructed otherwise, all students should have returned all sheet music to ensemble conductors. And let us not forget the most important reminder; that is to take your instrument home (hired & borrowed instruments included). The PAP will be open until 3:20pm every day until the final day of school for students to pick up instruments and folders from the storage locker.
Finally, if parents are considering purchasing an instrument over the Christmas break, please, please take the time to consult any one of our staff. We can help guide those families towards quality instruments for reasonable prices.
Have a great summer.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!

REFLECTION TIME
by: Bill Goodwin
Principal St Mary's Primary School
At this time of year, particularly in schools, it is a time to reflect and look back on the year that was. In my case, it has been a very rewarding and enjoyable experience filled with challenges but also times of great celebration and thanks for what has happened to myself and St Mary’s.
Reflection is a healthy and growth-filled process where you can really renew, recharge, and set new goals for the future. There has to be honesty and true self-reflection if growth is to occur.
As we move closer to the Church season of Advent, the same process must happen.
Advent gives us all an opportunity to look back and prepare for the joy that is Christmas and the birth of the Christ Child, our Saviour, Jesus. By preparing through stillness and prayer we can look back and see how the year has gone.
The birth of Jesus signals the beginning of what was a remarkable life. It also gives us hope and joy knowing that, through Jesus, we too can ultimately join him when we pass on.
So, let’s ready ourselves for Advent with a willingness to honestly prepare and reflect in readiness for Christmas so that it truly is a festive time for us and our families.
God bless
"The annual parish "Good News" magazine will now become a bi-monthly bulletin of photos and brief news stories. If your parish group would like to be showcased in the bulletin, please send in your photos with a short note, and we will attempt to include it in the coming edition.
