Principal’s Reflection

I represented this community at two funerals today. The first was the Memorial Mass for Shalom past student, Fr Karl Emerick OP. Karl was one of eight children and has innumerable cousins in Bundaberg and many at Shalom. This afternoon I attended the funeral of Jason McAtee who is the son of our Mrs Lynelle McAtee, brother of Anita Stewart and nephew of Cheryl Peterson. I didn’t know either of these men well but their families are intimately entwined with this College. The picture here comes from a beautiful book written by Charlie Mackesy called, ‘The Boy, the Mole, the Fox & the Horse’. This little piece of wisdom is one of many in the book. Standing with others, in their pain, is often the best and only thing we can do to navigate tragedy.

Student Leadership 2022 – after the completion of student voting in Term 3, I announced that Cristian Zandona (Adams) & Jorja Logan (McAuley) will be our school captains for next year. I have no doubt that these two very fine young people will do an excellent job. I announced last week to the staff and Year 11s that next year, we would not appoint House Captains until later in 2022. I would like to broaden the base of student leadership in each House and give space to every Year 12 who would like to, to step up and lead in their House. It has not been uncommon for students to just leave responsibility to those with badges and it has also not been uncommon for student and staff to realise that, sometimes, the election process did not successfully identify who the best leaders might be. We will be very happy to make a formal appointment and present badges, maybe more than two for each House, after our Year 12’s have demonstrated real leadership in the College.

Cristian Zandona and Jorja Logan

Annual Awards Night was to be held on the evening of Tuesday 16 November. We have decided to celebrate this event, for the second time, virtually. That process worked well last year. Very involved preparations go into presenting Awards Night and it is far from impossible, that such an event may be disrupted again by Covid. To avoid the time and effort and expense that goes into putting such a night on, we feel that another virtual presentation might be the wisest course of action this year.

All School Touch went ahead last week and we were able to send three of our four teams thanks to parents stepping up to look after the students. I am so grateful to them for their efforts which gave those young people a chance to participate in a great event.

Student Welfare and Information

Br Tim McMahon Bursary

Shalom College

This is for graduating Year 12 students

Please read the following letter from Mr McMahon to the Year 12 students. It is the offer of two bursaries to the value of $2000 each.

I emailed this information to the Year 12s on 17 September and again on Thursday 7 October. In the second email I have extended the date to MONDAY 18 OCTOBER.

This deadline must be met.

Letter from Mr McMahon

Dear Year 12 students

This is a Bursary opportunity open to the graduating class. Br Tim McMahon was my younger brother and 2021 marks 33 years since his death. My sister and brothers wanted to do something to mark his Anniversary. Between us, we are offering two $2000 bursaries.

Tim was dearly loved by his family and he was a bright and popular young man. He developed cancer and died very young at age 26. We hope that this bursary might assist two young people in the Senior class at Shalom to move forward in their careers more easily.

I would invite anyone interested in applying for this bursary to complete a letter of application outlining how they meet the criteria outlined below.

We would anticipate presenting these two bursaries on the night of the College Awards night. To that end, I would like written applications to be forwarded to Mrs Austin-Campbell by MONDAY 18 October.

Mr McMahon

Information about the Bursary

The Brother Tim McMahon Bursary, Shalom College, is offered to two suitable Year 12 students from Shalom College who intend to pursue a Tertiary degree or similar vocational pathway following graduation.

The Bursary will be for $2000 to be fully paid by the end of the successful applicants ‘completion of his/her first year Tertiary or Vocational studies.

Br Tim McMahon was a Christian Brother who died aged 26 in 1988. Tim taught in two schools before commencing at the first ‘alternative education’ option provided by the Brothers – then located at Kingston in Brisbane’s south.

Tim was a very good student himself but had a real compassion for those less fortunate than most. He recognized the transformative power of education and its capacity to change lives for the better. This bursary, offered by his family, recognizes the passion for education that animated his life.

The successful applicant, to be chosen by the College, would be a young person who has

  • Shown evidence of his/her support of the ethos and values of the College
  • Has contributed positively and obviously to the College through his/her years at Shalom.
  • Without the assistance of this Bursary, would face real financial difficulty in undertaking and completing a Tertiary or Vocational course.

The selection of the Br Tim McMahon Bursary winner will be made by the Leadership Team of the College and the Award will be presented at the Annual Awards evening of the College. The CLT will determine the process of selection for this Bursary and the decision of the Leadership team will be final and no recourse will be permitted.

The Bursary will be openly advertised and offered to the Senior class each year in due time, as advertised by the College, for selection.

Information for parents on Vaping

Unfortunately, this has become an issue amongst teenagers and Shalom College is not immune to students vaping. I have attached information for parents about the perils for our young people if they choose to vape.

Because this has become an issue in our College, we need to make it very clear that we will not tolerate vaping at the school. The consequence will be severe to send a clear message to our students.

If a student is caught with a vape, or is caught vaping, or brings a vape into the school to hand it over to another student, it will be an automatic external 5 day suspension.

Bullying

We do an enormous amount of work with our young people around bullying and what it looks like. Can I ask you to read through the following please?

Many of our young people will come forward and report that they are being bullied or if they see it happening to others.

Bullying needs to be reported to Mrs Austin-Campbell, Mr Robinson or the House Coordinators.

Bullying has 3 main features

  • It involves a misuse of power in a relationship
  • It is ongoing, deliberate and repeated
  • It involves behaviours that can cause harm

Conflict is something that we do have to deal with at times – these are single incidents and conflict or fight (not physical, but verbal) between equals.

Behaviours that do not constitute bullying include:

Mutual arguments and disagreements (where there is no power imbalance)

Not liking someone or a single act of rejection

One-off acts of meanness or spite

Isolated incidents of aggression, intimidation or violence

At times our young people need assistance if conflict occurs so that it can be resolved and so this situation is addressed and resolved.

Report

This is very important as it won’t stop. However, we do need to be mindful of the language we use – I often hear that the person does not want to “dob” or “snitch” on people and therefore is reluctant to speak out. Using these words is not helpful as it implies that the person being bullied is doing something wrong if they speak up and ask for help to solve the situation.

We need our students to REPORT/speak up.

The process: In the first instance of bullying being reported we do meet with the student/s and they are given a warning that whatever they are doing must stop. We go through the policy so that they are in no doubt that the situation will become worse for them should they bully the student/s any more. All situations are thoroughly investigated.

The second thing those of us who deal with bullying stress is that if it doesn’t stop then the person must come back and let us know – this is crucial.

The Anti-Bullying Policy can be found on Page 13 of the Student Record Book.

Punctuality

Thank you to those students who are striving to be punctual for school – the school day commences at 8:35am and students do need to be here by that time.

Grooming

Thank you for the standard of grooming of your children. I do need to stress, however, that students are not permitted to wear their sports uniform to school. Permission needs to be sought if they do need to wear a sports uniform due to an injury e.g wearing a moon boot. Not having a clean uniform is not an acceptable excuse etc. If, for some reason, this happens, the student needs to bring a note and come in to see me before they go into school. A uniform infringement consequence will be issued. The note explains what has led to the student being out of their formal uniform but does not excuse them. I appreciate your assistance in this matter.

Damien and McCormack Houses

The Shalom P & F Association have very kindly decided to pay for the purchase of a new House shirt for those students who have shifted from their present House and moved into one of the new Houses. We are very grateful for their very kind gesture. Mrs Barker will have a list of all students changing Houses. You will be advised through the newsletter when the new shirts become available.

Mission

Edmund Rice Camp

Over the holidays present and past students took some little buddies on an Edmund Rice Camp. The aim was simply to have a fun time and that was certainly achieved. Our students had to raise money, participate in Child Protection training and then give up 4 days of their holidays to be part of this experience but most would say it was totally worth it. In the tradition of Edmund Rice they saw the value of walking beside others and giving without judging. Thank you to all who attended.

In memory of Brother Rochford and his love of the Eddie Rice Camps we planted a tree at Chaverim.

Duke of Edinburgh

Over the weekend of Friday 10 – Sunday 12 September, six students from Years 9 and 10 travelled from Bundaberg to the upper banks of the Noosa River at Cooloola Recreation Area, Great Sandy National Park for their Duke of Edinburgh Youth Award: Bronze adventurous journey: Daniel Cavanagh, Kaitlyn Johnson, Yangyang Lu, Elizabeth Pascoe, Molly Sellers, and Thanushi Weerasinghe.

Upon arrival we excitedly pitched our tents at the historic Harry’s Hut camping area, providing us with a relaxing and picturesque view of our bush retreat, amongst a fringe of open forest accompanied by direct river access. Throughout our Qualifying Journey we successfully completed a range of activities encompassing: pitching and packing tents, cooking our own meals using Trangias, navigating along the river, strenuous canoeing, and the most problematic challenge of packing our personal items into a paddling barrel.

With direct river access via a jetty located at the campsite, day one encompassed a lengthy 14 kilometre paddle upstream on the Noosa River. We optimistically passed campsites one, two and three, testing both our tenacity and stamina along the way. Despite the laborious paddle, the view was stunning, native animals and bird species to be seen panoramically. We were blessed with beautiful views before once again pitching our tents, cooking, and entertaining ourselves with a pack of cards, and the creation of paracord bracelets.

Day two began with a fresh and frosty start on the Noosa River, travelling downstream to Lake Cootharaba, Fig Tree Point, and the Kinaba Information Centre. The 12 kilometre paddle provided us with exquisite reflections of the misty morning on the river. The serene sight was enough to persuade anyone to persevere, even amongst an extremely forceful headwind, yet again testing our persistence and strength. After numerous stops, we breathlessly arrived back at our campsite, excited to begin another journey, the journey home.

A very large thank you is extended to; our volunteer award leader Janet Lindsay, Mrs Bishop, and Mr Eke for volunteering their time to prepare, train, and undertake this journey alongside us, amongst numerous others who made this trip a success.

Guitar Concert

On Sunday 12 September, the fantastic Mr Cameron MacDonnell debuted his guitar students in a concert which featured an array of ensembles and soloists. Although the guitar program is relatively new to Shalom, the reception has been amazing and we must thank Mr MacDonnell for his dedication, drive and enthusiasm. Eleven students stepped onto the stage, braved their nerves, and performed a diverse range of songs from heavy rock to classical, all which had the audience humming and toe-tapping along! We thank the students and parents who were able to make the day such a success, as well as the staff that ran such a smooth show. As always, it’s never too late to enrol your child in group or private tuition, the Shalom Instrumental team are excited to meet new faces and spread the love of music. Be it strings, piano, guitar, woodwind, brass, vocal or percussion - we have you covered! Please contact megan_hoban@shalomcollege.com for any enquires and we hope to see you at a performance sometime!

Table Tennis – BDSSS Winter Sport Finals Day

The Shalom Table Tennis team finished the season in third position, behind Bundaberg Christian College 1 in first place, and St Luke’s in second place. Our finals day started with Shalom matched up against St Luke’s for a place in the final. Our team of Zacharry Morrish, George Stelmack, Isaac Mass and Michael Richardson had a very slow start, and looked out after losing four of the first five matches. However, they displayed great spirit and fought back to win the next three matches. George played our final match (though he probably did not realise as two games had started at the same time), which went to an epic three games, unfortunately narrowly won by St Luke’s. The final result was the narrowest of victories to St Luke’s 5 matches (11 games won) to 4 matches (10 games won) – essentially, one game difference between the two teams. All our players contributed, winning one match each.

Shalom then went on to play for overall third place against BCC3. This team had narrowly defeated us in our earlier match up – 5 matches to 4 with both teams winning 11 games. It was again a very closely fought affair with 5 matches going to 3 games to determine the winner. Zacharry Morrish and George Stelmack both came away with two wins, while Isaac Maas and Michael Richardson both pushed their opponents in games going over 11 points. In the end, Bundaberg Christian College 3 came away winners 5 matches (13 games) to 4 (11 games).

While the results may have been disappointing for the boys, they are certainly to be commended for their sportsmanship, behaviour and attitude.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers

At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.

Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.

For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.

Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).

No experience required!

Ignite Conference

Ignite is a Catholic youth conference that draws together a network of high schoolers, young adults, ministry leaders, families, teachers, priests, and religious from around the country, sending them out with a passion for authentic faith in Jesus. It is four days of real -world formation, encouragement in faith, great people and powerful worship. Forty-five young people from the Rockhampton Diocese (six from the Bundaberg Catholic Parish) travelled to the Ignite conference in Brisbane two weeks ago. An Ignite conference is an amazingly inspirational Catholic youth conference that usually draws people from all over Australia and beyond. This year, because of the on-going COVID situation, the attendees in the most part came from Queensland with a few people attending from South Australia. At Ignite conferences, each morning starts with a rally. Similarly, each night finishes with a breathtaking rally which consists of awesome Catholic music written and performed by “Emmanuel Worship” as well as some wonderfully talented speakers, one of whom was the Rockhampton Diocese’s own, Laura Otto. On Thursday night there was Eucharistic Adoration that was led by our Bishop, Michael McCarthy. Thursday nights adoration was an uplifting, overwhelming and blessed experience in every sense. There is a palpable devotion among the youth gathered when this traditional ritual brings them together. It definitely is an experience of God’s presence for them. The theme of Ignite conference 2021 was “Unleashed”. We looked at how we can be “leashed” by things in our day -to-day lives, often without realising. It highlighted how we can be held back by being stuck in our comfort zones. Throughout the days the leaders and the participants attended workshops and listened to keynote speakers and other presentations. In these workshops and keynote sessions various contemporary topics generated from the scriptures, as well as issues of helping the poor, theology of the body and so many more were discussed. By the end of the conference, we were ready to be “unleashed” back into our lives. Ignite is a great opportunity to meet new people from all around Australia and discuss Faith, Theology and living as a young Catholic in a society that is becoming more and more secular. The whole experience of ignite leaves you inspired ready to come back with enthusiasm and energy to be a vital member of your parish. My hope is that next year we have even more youth from our Parish and our Diocese attend.
