Principal’s Reflection

Reconciliation Week was last week. As a nation, we remembered the Mabo decision which is now 30 years old. I remember that legislation pretty clearly. As a much younger man, I had just been appointed as Principal of St Brendan’s College Yeppoon. At that time, the vast majority of the student population of St Brendan’s was drawn from farms, properties and rural towns of Central Queensland. The Mabo decision caused serious concern and alarm in those communities in particular.

People were worried and very anxious that the legal title to their properties would be taken from them. That was never the intent of the legislation but more to recognise that First Nations peoples still had strong connection to their land. As it has turned out, the anxiety felt was unnecessary and recognizing Native Title has been positive. As a nation, we need to continue to work towards ever greater reconciliation and to do what we can to address the systemic challenges handed to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander peoples that has come since the arrival of European settlers. I hope that all Australians could support the Statement of the Heart. Regrettably, most of us have not read it. Now is an opportunity -

Uluru: Statement of the Heart

"We, gathered at the 2017 National Constitutional Convention, coming from all points of the southern sky, make this statement from the heart:

Our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander tribes were the first sovereign Nations of the Australian continent and its adjacent islands, and possessed it under our own laws and customs. This our ancestors did, according to the reckoning of our culture, from the Creation, according to the common law from 'time immemorial', and according to science more than 60,000 years ago.

This sovereignty is a spiritual notion: the ancestral tie between the land, or 'mother nature', and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples who were born therefrom, remain attached thereto, and must one day return thither to be united with our ancestors. This link is the basis of the ownership of the soil, or better, of sovereignty. It has never been ceded or extinguished, and co-exists with the sovereignty of the Crown.

How could it be otherwise? That peoples possessed a land for sixty millennia and this sacred link disappears from world history in merely the last two hundred years?

With substantive constitutional change and structural reform, we believe this ancient sovereignty can shine through as a fuller expression of Australia’s nationhood. Proportionally, we are the most incarcerated people on the planet. We are not an innately criminal people. Our children are aliened from their families at unprecedented rates. This cannot be because we have no love for them. And our youth languish in detention in obscene numbers. They should be our hope for the future.

These dimensions of our crisis tell plainly the structural nature of our problem. This is the torment of our powerlessness. We seek constitutional reforms to empower our people and take a rightful place in our own country. When we have power over our destiny our children will flourish. They will walk in two worlds and their culture will be a gift to their country.

We call for the establishment of a First Nations Voice enshrined in the Constitution.

Makarrata is the culmination of our agenda: the coming together after a struggle. It captures our aspirations for a fair and truthful relationship with the people of Australia and a better future for our children based on justice and self-determination. We seek a Makarrata Commission to supervise a process of agreement-making between governments and First Nations and truth-telling about our history.

In 1967 we were counted, in 2017 we seek to be heard. We leave base camp and start our trek across this vast country. We invite you to walk with us in a movement of the Australian people for a better future."

Long Service Leave for me begins today. I will be away from the College until the end of Term 3. I’m looking forward to being back for the Year 11 Retreat at the Sunshine Coast. In my absence, Mrs Austin-Campbell steps in as Acting Principal and Ms Kim O’Shea-Hard as Acting Deputy Principal. Mr Aaron Brown will be Acting Assistant Principal Pastoral and Ms Justine Blinco will fill in for Aaron as Chisholm House Coordinator. No very adventurous plans on my part of leave beyond enjoying Bargara through the winter. The dog is looking forward to a lot more walks!

Mission

Confirmation and Eucharist are two of the seven sacraments of initiation through which Catholic Christians pass in the process of their religious upbringing. In Confirmation they are sealed with the gift of the Holy Spirit through the laying on of hands and the anointing with oil. In the Eucharist they receive the Body and Blood of Jesus. Through these two sacraments they are strengthened to continue their journey in adult Christian life.

We would like to congratulate the following Shalom students who were Confirmed last week and made their First Communion over the past two weekends at our churches. Along with the 70 primary school students from the various Bundaberg schools. Congratulations to you all.

From the Library

Some kids aren’t really into reading which can be problematic upon progressing to higher grades and tertiary education, as they find the ‘art’ of cognitively processing print is not in their skillset. This can be difficult as they have to get used to suddenly processing large amounts of information without this skill. And it’s not just the reading that is important, it’s the habit of going into a library, selecting a book, and holding it in their hands … the concept of ‘the book’. In my opinion it’s better that a child reads a cereal box than nothing at all.

The non-fiction or information book is an excellent vehicle for enticing young folk with inquiring minds but with poor reading habits. An engaging kids’ non-fiction book will be colourful and entertaining and peppered with supporting illustration. They often are larger so the pictures and text can be as well which is less tiring on the eyes and they tend to ‘feel’ short even if they aren’t because the information doesn’t need to be read in the traditional page order. The reader can jump from section to section and chapter to chapter and can take breaks from them without losing the ‘story’. Non-fiction books are also non-sequential so the child can read a series of them in any order they please.

Another bonus, apart from being educational and interesting, the non-fiction book will acquaint the reader with the format elements: Contents, Glossary, Index, Appendix, Titles and headings, Charts and diagrams. So, it isn’t necessarily always important for the young reader to struggle with a novel.

The library at Shalom is gradually building more comprehensive non-fiction collections, both senior and junior. New in the junior non-fiction is a raft of new curricula supportive books as well as some interesting general knowledge books such as “Fantastic facts”, “Fantastic animal facts”, “Britannica All new children’s encyclopedia”, “Ripley’s believe it or not”, “10-minute science experiments”, “What’s where on earth”, “Guinness World Records 2022” and many more ….

Shalom Slays Cancer – Australia’s Biggest Morning Tea

A massive thanks to the Shalom Community for their generous contributions to our Cancer Council fundraiser. So many of our Year 12 students worked very hard cooking and selling muffins to ensure the success of the day; and it was very successful! So many of our Shalom Family members are, unfortunately, touched by the horrible hand of cancer; it is wonderful that we can give a little back to help kick it to the curb.

Congratulations to our two raffle winners – Nikita Barlow (1st place) and Finley Christiansen (2nd).

2022 Vicki Wilson Netball Competition

The Vicki Wilson Netball Competition is an annual progressive state-wide competition open to ALL secondary schools (both state and non-state) in Queensland. Schools firstly participate in a preliminary competition against other school in their region for the opportunity to progress to the State Finals series in Brisbane.

This year, the Wide Bay Preliminary Round was held on Monday 30th May at Bundaberg Netball Association. Shalom College had three teams participating in this round – Senior Girls (VW Cup Division); Junior Girls (VW Shield Division) and Boys (VW Boys Division).

As a warm-up competition to QISSN, our Senior Girls and Boys teams were hoping to achieve success in the Vicki Wilson Preliminary Round and represent Shalom College at the 2022 State Finals. In the VW Cup division, the Senior Girls won most of their early games in a comfortable fashion to finish at the top of their pool. Unfortunately, the team then faced a very strong Xavier College team in the Grand Final match who were ultimately too strong for the Shalom team. In the Boys division, the Shalom College Boys team were hampered by an early injury to one of their key shooters. However, they recovered to record solid wins against Fraser Coast Anglican College, Isis SHS and St Luke’s College. However, the boys were unlucky to have to play a determined Bundaberg SHS team in their pool rounds, going down by only 2 goals and missing a spot in the Grand Final.

Our Junior Vicki Wilson team fared better, winning their pool games convincingly, before facing St Luke’s in what turned out to be an enthralling Grand Final in the VW Shield division. With the two teams evenly matched in the first half, the result could have gone either way. However, the Shalom College team pulled ahead in the second half to record a 6-goal win. As Wide Bay winners (and with no Wide Bay South opponent this year), the Junior team now progress to the State Finals in Brisbane in early August.

Congratulations to all of our netball players who represent Shalom College so well and best of luck to the Junior VW team in their State Finals quest.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers

At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.

Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.

For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.

Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).

No experience required!
