Principal’s Reflection
Without knowing a great deal about Andrew Thorburn who was to be the CEO of Essendon Football club, I found myself feeling a bit of sympathy for him last week. He is also Chair of the Board of a Church that, on its website, condemns abortion and homosexuality. From what I can read, he has not spoken publicly about those issues or promoted them in any of his roles. The Essendon Football Club asked him to step down from his assigned role at the club because of the views of his Church. From what I have read, in his other very senior role at NAB, he led the bank’s support for the AFL ‘Pride Round’ and has championed inclusion and diversity structures at NAB. I love the Catholic Church. I have been an active member all of my life. That said, in the catechism of the Catholic Church, we still define same sex attraction as ‘intrinsically disordered’. I could not disagree with this more and am disappointed that this language has not been changed - yet. But the Catholic Church is still my ‘mob’. I don’t agree with everything my Church does or says but, on the whole, it does wonderful work and nourishes my life and faith. I wonder if a Catholic were nominated to be CEO of Essendon, whether they would be found unacceptable because of some views the Church holds?
I think the bigger fear is that we may be losing the ability in society to disagree on issues, respectfully. Shouldn’t it be possible to hold different views, as long as those views don’t infringe the reasonable rights and freedoms of others, with dialogue marked by respect and genuine listening? Through that type of dialogue people and institutions improve and evolve. The Church I love is better today, in so many ways, than it was 30 years ago. Are there still areas that need to be improved – absolutely! Shalom College is a proudly Catholic school. At the same time, we will support anyone in this community who is same sex attracted or who struggle to ‘fit in’. We will do our best to an inclusive and welcoming community to anyone who wishes to share our values and ethos.
Reporting to Parents – I have always stressed with teachers at Shalom that parents should not get surprised by any bad news on end of Semester reports. I have always asked them to ensure that communication was made with parents by email, well before reports arrived. With the advent of the SIA app, it does not appear necessary for me to stress that with teachers anymore. I hope every parent has SIA downloaded on their phone and home computer. I know with my own children, I am informed every time they get a piece of assessment marked. I can easily follow their academic progress throughout the term.

Resilience will be a key theme in the presentation to parents by Ms Hollie Siebold in our Theatre on Tuesday October 18 commencing at 7pm. Hollie is an outstanding presenter and this is a presentation supported by our P&F. Hollie probably has more personal insights into the pluses and minuses of Social Media given her husband Anthony’s role as a coach in the NRL. I would strongly encourage all to attend. This event will also be live streamed.

NAPLAN Student Reports
Parents of Year 7 and Year 9 students who completed NAPLAN in 2022 will receive their student’s report in the mail shortly.
Middle School - ROSA Awards
Term 3 ROSA Awards are being finalised; awardees will be presented with them during House Assembly this week. A list of the recipients will be published in the newsletter in Week 5.
Year 12 Mock Examinations
Year 12 students have now completed their ‘mock’ examinations in preparation for the upcoming external exams. Over the next two weeks students will receive feedback on their progress, analyse their responses and work towards further improvement. It is imperative that all students are present during the two weeks leading up to the examinations to ensure they are sufficiently prepared for success.
Year 12 - Confirmation, Results and QCE Eligibility
The College is currently receiving notification of the confirmed results for Year 12 students for all IA3 results in General and General Extension subjects. Students will be informed of their ‘confirmed’ result for each subject when available. This information will also be made available to students via their QCAA Student Portal account.
After the confirmation process students will know their total mark (/75 or /50) for each of their general subjects leading into the external assessments. A student must sit the external assessment to receive a final grade which will be out of 100. This mark is converted into an A – E result and recorded on the Senior Statement. Please be aware if a student does not receive an overall result of C or better, they will not receive the two QCE points for successful completion of the subject.
If a student does not sit the external assessment (without an approved AARA) they will receive a NOT RATED for the subject on their Senior Statement. This will also mean they cannot receive the allocated two QCE points for the subject.
This is a timely reminder for everyone, in order for a student to be awarded their QCE they must have successfully obtained 20 credits (12 being from completed core) during their senior study and passed at least one unit of both literacy and numeracy. Students are able to check their QCAA Learning Account to see if they are on track to receive their QCE, especially as they now know their progressive results before commencing the external exams.

Mission
Edmund Rice Camp
Over the holidays a number of Year 12 students (and 1 Year 11 Student) participated in the Edmund Rice Camp. They gave up 4 days of their holidays to give some local kids who needed a break and some fun and attention.
They sang, danced, swam, played games, got covered in yucky stuff all to ensure their little buddies had a great time. They were exhausted afterwards but that was ok – it was worth it.
Just about all the leadership team who run the camp were past Shalom students – this is an amazing legacy that we hope continues into the future.
All our Big Buddies were great on camp but after the camp 2 people were awarded with a special honour. One person was acknowledged as a possible future leader in the Eddie Rice Camp family. They embraced all that it means to be a big buddy and their positive attitude and attention to their buddy was outstanding. This person was Cooper.
A second award – the Brother Rochford Memorial Award went to the person who embodied the values that Brother held so highly. They picked up on the little things that needed to be done and went about their role in a quiet and dedicated manner – not calling attention to themselves. The recipient of this award was Stephen.
Year 10 ACTS Camp
"Last term, nine grade ten students travelled to Cooee Bay in Yeppoon to participate in the Year 10 ACTS camp 2022. Students from seven schools from the Rockhampton diocese attended this camp. With over 50 students, there was a great opportunity for us to meet new friends and share our own stories. Over the three day camp, we participated in a variety of games and activities that required us to step out of our comfort zones, reflect upon ourselves and share our story with others. The camp was a lovely opportunity to take time to reflect upon ourselves and how we can make the world a better place for others and ourselves.
Personally, the best part of ACTS Camp for me, was the karaoke night, where we all sat together and sang songs to the sound of the instructor, Dave Jorna’s guitar. This brought us together and encouraged us to step out of our comfort zones. All the students who attended treated one another with the respect and support we needed to get the most out of ACTS Camp. 2022 ACTS camp has had a positive impact and the memories we made on this camp will last forever.” – Sienna
“Year 10 ACTS camp was a great experience for me because I got to meet new people and make heaps of friends. It was such a fun experience because it was so different to anything I have done before.” – Elisabeth
“Year 10 ACTS Camp was a great opportunity to learn new skills, meet new people, and really think about who we are and what are at the core of our beliefs. The Camp was held over 3 days, at the Yeppoon PCYC facility. Year 10 ACTS stands for ‘A Chance to Share’ and was an event we feel so lucky we were able to attend. Highlights of the camp include establishing our personal code, connecting with like-minded people, and of course the food. ACTS was hosted by public speaker, Dave, and he helped us along the journey. We would like to thank Mrs Petersen, Ms Clark and Mrs Taylor for the opportunity we had to attend, we are very grateful.
My highlight of the camp was the time where we would split into small groups, with people from all different schools. I thought it was great to be able to connect and share with students from a different place, who still however hold similar values and beliefs.” – Poppy
“ACTS camp for me was a phenomenal experience as we got to meet new people who have the same interests as us and also got to discover ourselves a lot more as a person and to become more open to people. I definitely will be going back next year.” – Zali
“ACTS camp is something I will remember forever. The experience gave me time to stop and look for the gifts within and inspired me to bring them out and use them in my everyday life.” – Jaslyn

Over the recent school holidays, Year 11 student, Cooper from PC RICE 4 demonstrated his outstanding commitment and dedication to Shalom College through his active involvement in both the Edmund Rice Leadership Conference and the Edmund Rice Camp.
Cooper met and discussed servant leadership models and ideas with keynote speakers and other students at the conference held in Brisbane over 3 days. He was also actively involved in the Edmund Rice Camp as a leader and buddy to younger students, organizing and facilitating engaging activities over 3 days. Combined Schools String Workshop
At the end of last term, the instrumental music department hosted a Combined Schools String Workshop where they welcomed students from throughout the district to join forces with them and create amazing music. The PAP stage was bursting with over 100 string players as students of every age and stage worked together to learn a program of new music which they performed that afternoon. The group was also privileged to welcome the St Peter’s Chamber Soloists from Brisbane who played an impressive program of fiendishly difficult music for them before joining in to mentor our students for the afternoon rehearsal and performance.
This was a great day of sharing and a fine example of how music can bring people together. The joy in that room throughout the day was tangible.

From the Library
“If you’re not prepared to be wrong, you’ll never come up with anything original” – Sir Ken Robinson, 2006.
“The research shows clear links from school libraries and library staff to improvements in student’s reading and academic success. School libraries are fundamental to developing engaged readers who have the capability and inclination to read and learn beyond their years at school. School libraries help students learn to find and use the information they need, to succeed now and in their future life and work.” - National Library of New Zealand, 2002.
“School libraries, like so many public libraries, are changing. The library is no longer a ‘silent’ place to do academic work. With the vast amount of information and technology available to our students, the library needs to be a place where creativity, innovation and collaboration are possible. It is welcoming and relaxing yet provides a stimulating and flexible learning environment too.” – Jackie Child, St Aidan’s Anglican Girls’ School, 2018.
The school library is the core of the school. It is a place for students to come and be free from the expectations of the timetable, the classroom, or the sports field. A safe space for community, companionship, and play. The library nurtures creativity.
In a historic TED talk the late great Sir Ken Robinson, British author, speaker, and international advisor on education, outlines his theories on creativity. Sir Ken believed we don’t become creative; we grow out of it. The fundamental principles of creativity suggest that kids will always take a chance until we convince them to do otherwise. We need to rethink the principles on which we view intelligence – it is now much more ‘diverse, dynamic, and distinct’…creativity must now be seen as important in education as literacy.
Don’t forget, if you want to express your creativity and immortalise yourself in our library catalogue then submit a book review! Our weekly competition has already begun, all participants are guaranteed a sweet treat and a chance to win a bigger prize at the end of the month.
Follow directions under the title of your chosen book or come in and ask us how to go about joining in.

Shalom Tennis Success – Gala Day
Congratulations to all players who represented Shalom at the Gala Day on 13 September. It was a great fun day with a fantastic spirit shown throughout the day - a credit to the players. As well as having a very enjoyable day, we also had some excellent results.
Division A was taken out by the very strong Shalom Black combination of Zain and Lachlan. Shalom is very fortunate to have players of this calibre at our school and they certainly displayed their skills on the day. Shalom White, represented by Zander, Lachlan and Harry also played some high quality tennis on the day - definitely a team to watch in the future
Division B was a tight contest, with all three Shalom teams finishing tied for first place at the end of the day - an amazing achievement. After a games countback, third place (6 sets, 37 games) was awarded to the Shalom Black 'young guns', Nicolas, Oscar, Jake and Ryan. Second place (6 sets, 44 games) went to our talented team of Shalom Red girls, Lara, Sophie, Emily, Sithuki and Megan. First place, by a single game (6 sets, 45 games), went to Shalom White, Will, Chase, Elijah, Ethan and Jacob - deserving winners on the day.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.
Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
