Principal’s Reflection

I got really excited last week when I got feedback from a student about what I had written in last Monday’s Reflection. I get very excited when I find anyone reads my Reflections!! In that one, I shared a lovely reflection from Pope Francis on the situation in Ukraine – which doesn’t appear to be getting any better. This young person was prompted to write something in response which I thought was pretty profound and I asked permission to share it –

Today, As I Watched the News

Today,
As I watched the news,
I heard of school children being sent from one city to another, as parents hoped and prayed that they’ll escape the bombings.
Today,

As I watched the news,
I saw a wife break down and hold on to her husband like it’s the last time they’ll say goodbye, as he stayed back to defend his nation.
Today,

As I watched the news,
I saw the number of casualties get higher and higher, until they’ve lost count of the innocent lives lost.
Today,

As I watched the news,
I watched the moral battles, as they chose between fleeing to safety, or staying to fight back and defend their country.
Today,

As I watched the news,
I struggled to understand how someone could be so evil.
Today,

As I watched the news,
I watched a nation too pretty to be destroyed, break and burn.

Today,
As I watched the news,
I realised that the ‘United Nations’ weren’t so “united” after all.
Today,

As I watched the news,
I wondered how humanity could be so inhumane.
Today,

As I watched the news,
I watched the definition of ‘shelter’ change to ‘an emergency bunker’.

Today,
I didn’t watch the news…

I emailed this young person back and congratulated them on the piece. I also reminded them that even with all the troubles in the world, the vast majority of people are good – even in Russia. I shared this thought and the student’s poem with staff. One of our teachers, on Maternity Leave at the moment, sent me the following shortly after -

Hi Dan

I am with this student. I think switching off from the news could do us all a world of good at the moment. Although I have had three really kind people in three days which gives me hope in humanity!!

Sunday, I went to pay for our coffee at The Journey and someone has paid forward coffee for parents, so we had free coffee!

Yesterday I was battling everyone at the shops with a hangry 1.5 year old and the entire line at the checkout let me go first as they were all older and said they had been there and done that with young children before and know how hard the juggle is.

And then today I didn't realise I had dropped my wallet, once again wrangling my (not so) small human and someone came running after me for a couple of hundred meters to return it!

So even though the world seems to be falling apart, there are still kind and caring people out there.

Over the weekend, we saw thousands in the ‘Mud Army’ reach out to those in need. Many others will give very generously to assist those who have suffered. Most people are good. This week, we will probably hear more bad news but let’s try and remember that most people are good and to make an effort add to that tally with how we interact with those near to us.

Our Information Night for parents considering enrolment at Shalom in 2023 will now be on Tuesday 8 March at 7pm in the Performing Arts Theatre at Shalom. All prospective parents and students are welcome to attend in person or on the Live Stream.

The address for the Live Stream will be available after 11am on Tuesday and will be found on the Shalom Facebook page and on our website.

A reminder that our Open Day will be on Wednesday 16 March commencing at 9am. All parents and students are encouraged and welcomed to attend.

Year 12 Induction Liturgy has been postponed a couple of times because of Covid but we are looking forward to recognizing the leadership of our 2022 Year 12 class on Tuesday (March 15) next week. The liturgy will commence at 10am and will be live streamed as well.

Catholic Schools Race Day is on this Saturday. Very grateful to Mr Peter O’Beirne and team who have shouldered the responsibilities of organization. I’m sure it will be a great day again. Looking forward to welcoming back the Year 10 class from Loyola College for their 40 year reunion.

Round 1 - Year 10 Meningococcal ACWY – Tuesday 8 March
Round 1 - Year 7 HPV1 & Year 7 dTpa – Wednesday 9 March and Thursday 10 March

COVID vaccines are NOT part of the School Program

School Immunisation Program & COVID-19 Vaccination

Please be advised that the Australian Technical Advisory Group on Immunisation (ATAGI) have updated their clinical advice regarding the timeframes between the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines and other vaccines, including routine childhood and adolescent vaccines delivered as part of the School Immunisation Program.

The guidance is that there is no longer a required timeframe to wait between the delivery of COVID-19 vaccines and other vaccines. This means if your child has a COVID-19 vaccine planned for a similar time to the vaccines given as part of the School Immunisation Program they can be co-administered (that is, given on the same day.)

Please find information below from ATAGI regarding clinical guidance on the use of COVID-19 vaccine in Australia in 2022 and timing of administration of other vaccines, including influenza vaccine.

Australian Government Department of Health Clinical recommendations for COVID-19 Vaccines Timing of administration of other vaccines

Visit the weblink below or see copy of information below:

https://www.health.gov.au/initiatives-and-programs/covid-19-vaccines/advice-for-providers/clinical-guidance/clinical-recommendations

COVID-19 vaccines can be co-administered (that is, given on the same day) with an influenza vaccine. Studies demonstrate the safety and immunogenicity of co-administration of COVID-19 and influenza vaccines.

COVID-19 vaccines can also be co-administered with other vaccines if required. This includes routine childhood and adolescent vaccines. The benefits of ensuring timely vaccination and maintaining high vaccine uptake outweigh any potential risks associated with immunogenicity, local adverse reactions or fever.

There is limited evidence on the safety and effectiveness of co-administering COVID-19 vaccines at the same time as other vaccines. Providers need to balance the opportunistic need for co-administration with giving the vaccines on separate visits. There is the potential for an increase in mild to moderate adverse

events when more than one vaccine is given at the same time. Co-administration or near administration (e.g. within days) with another vaccine may also make it challenging to attribute potential adverse events. Providers should ensure that parents/guardians of young children receiving COVID-19 vaccines are aware of the increased potential for local reactions.

If you have any queries regarding this information, please don’t hesitate to contact your local Ozcare School Immunisation Program Team.

Shalom College is participating in Queensland Health’s annual School Immunisations Program. All Year 7 and Year 10 students will be offered free vaccinations as recommended on the National Immunisation schedule to protect against vaccine preventable diseases. In 2022, Year 7 students will be offered human papillomavirus (HPV) and diphtheria-tetanus-pertussis (whooping cough) vaccination. Year 10 students will be offered meningococcal ACWY vaccination.

The consent cards will be given to all our current year 7 students via House Coordinators/PC Teachers early in Term 1. Participating students are required to return the completed forms to Student reception by today, 14 February. Any late forms will need to be returned to Ozcare directly. Only students with a signed and completed consent card, indicating ‘Yes to Vaccination’ will be vaccinated.

Dose and administration

Year 7

Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine

One booster dose of adult/adolescent vaccine will be offered. Most students will have received doses previously when they were pre-school age.

Year 10

If you do not wish your child to be vaccinated, or your child has already been vaccinated with the offered vaccines, please complete the ‘No to Vaccination’ section on the consent card and return the consent card to the school within one week.

The Public Health Act 2005 requires the school principal to disclose student and parent information for eligible Year 7 and Year 10 students to the school immunisation provider if requested. This information will enable the school immunisation provider to determine those who have and have not consented, and directly follow-up with parents of students who have not returned a consent card. This direct follow-up ensures all parents are offered the opportunity for their child to participate in this important school health program. It may also assist you in making decisions about your child’s immunisation needs.

Parents or legal guardians who have indicated ‘No to Vaccination’ will not be followed up by the provider.

School immunisation providers will be bound to comply with the Information Privacy Act 2009 (Qld). This Act stipulates the requirements for the secure collection, use, storage and disposal of personal information to be followed by school health program providers.

The vaccinations will be conducted by a team of authorised registered nurses and/or a medical practitioner. Parents or legal guardians are encouraged to ensure their children have an adequate breakfast on the morning of vaccination.

For further information about the School Immunisation Program please call 13 HEALTH (13432584) or visit the link below.

From the Library

This week, we are looking at two new acquisitions in the Junior library, both of which, in different ways, highlight the powers of a healthy resilience during times of change, a positive attitude, and a gentle regard for ourselves, our fellow humans, and our planet. Lessons that our children are much in need of these days.

“How to change everything: a young human’s guide to protecting the planet and each other” by Naomi Klein

We are all aware of the movement that is fighting for the future of the earth by mitigating the effects of climate change. This book by Klein, reminds us that our youth are a major part of that movement. We look to them as not just followers but future leaders in the effort to ensure a fair and livable environment for everyone.

“How to change everything” is full of empowering stories from young environmental heroes all around the world who are leading the way and showing the rest of us that in adversity there is a great opportunity for change.

“Relentless optimism: how a commitment to positive thinking changes everything” by Darrin Donnelly

This book is part of Donnelly’s Sports for the Soul series. It is set in the world of professional baseball and touts that positive thinking will net positive results. Donnelly uses the story of baseballer Bobby Kane and his experiences with self-doubt and pessimism. The story outlines his meeting with inspirational coach Wally Hogan who uses techniques and methods in his coaching that build and sustain optimism, resilience, and positivity.

More than just thinking positive thoughts and pinning hope on fruitless platitudes, ‘positive thinking’ is a lifelong attitude change that eliminates the voices of fear and doubt.

Music Department

“Band is Always On”

I am sure that we can all agree that everyone’s daily lives are impacted to some degree. Inconsistency and lack of routine can be debilitating to the best of students, parents, teachers and communities. In these times of uncertainty, the Shalom College Music Department is even more dedicated to providing a safe and valuable learning environment for our students. This is fundamental to our program.

Despite isolations, illnesses, floods and whatever else that Murphy can throw at us, we will be here. The unspoken rule that we have always tried to instill to our participating music students is this:

“Band Is Always On”.

(please note that this mantra is inclusive of all facets of our music department whether strings, guitar, vocal, band, piano)

So unless you have received specific notification from your Ensemble Director or Music Teacher that a particular rehearsal or lesson is cancelled, you can be assured that we will be here to teach your children.

We will be here helping new students start their musical journey.
We will be here engaging those students continuing their music education.
We will be here guiding students’ participation in their first or new ensemble.
We will be here for anyone who has the desire to play music at any level on almost any instrument.

We are here; band is always on.

Instrumental Music Teacher

Concert Postponed

Unfortunately, Bella Canna’s ‘Elevate’ concert that was advertised in last week’s newsletter has had to be postponed due to one of the members of the ensemble contracting COVID. The group will now give this concert at the Holy Rosary Church on Saturday 21 May.

Summer Sport

Table Tennis

Shalom Table Tennis teams had another week of good performances but mixed results.

The Shalom 2 team – Hannah Lee, Michael Richardson and Isaac Maas – had a massive turn-around from last week where they were unable to win a game. This week, they defeated Bundaberg Christian College 3 without letting them win a game! A strong performance from those team members. Well done.

The Shalom 3 team – Oscar Buckley, Bailey Worrad and Jake Wall – won by forfeit against St Lukes 2, and were competitive in the games played against a modified team, but were defeated seven matches to two.

Shalom 1 team – Lincoln Carter, Jessica Carter, Christina Lee and Zac Morrish – had the bye this week, and were not called upon to support other teams. They played practice games in preparation for next week.

Shalom 4 played the Bundaberg State High School team in a very close, hard-fought affair. Will Savage, Harry Laing and William Cole-Bloore each had wins and losses, but overall went down narrowly five games to four.

Students are to be commended on their behaviour and participation.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers

At the start of each school year we ask parents to indicate their availability for volunteering in the College tuckshop.

Life is busy and forever changing, so for this reason we have set up a booking system that will not only accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and who may have a day here or there throughout the year to come along and lend a hand and support our students. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 41 55 8111.

For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.

Shifts last from 2 to 3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).

No experience required!

LOVE JUSTICE PEACE

Fr Peter Tonti
Parish Priest

The devastation and atrocities presently taking place in Eastern Europe speaks of darkness and helpless misery into the very souls of our inner being. So many unanswerable questions. We come together in lament for the people of Ukraine, Russia and Belarus. We come in prayer with the many who, through their open compassion and hospitality, have embraced the unfolding human tragedy.

CHRISTIANS

As Christians we are peacemakers. That is peace makers. We cannot idly sit on the sidelines when such inhumanity takes place. We must name the evil. As St Paul reminds us “ Let love be genuine; hate what is evil, hold fast to what is good … Do not be overcome by evil but overcome evil with good” (Romans 12: 9; 21).

Archbishop Coleridge emphasises “This isn’t some geopolitical game. Lives are at stake the lies have to stop. Truth and justice have to prevail if there is to be a future for all of us.” (Media Release 26/2/22).

Pope Francis makes the appeal to those “with political responsibility to examine their consciences seriously before God, who is God of peace and not of war, who is the Father of all, not just of some, who wants us to be brothers and sisters and not enemies”. (Media Release 26/2/22).

Caritas Australia, part of our Catholic Church’s international aid and development agency, has immediately joined with Caritas Ukraine to provide vital humanitarian assistance for the victims of war. The Ukraine people, under fire in the bomb shelters, railway subways and even using churches, are praying in hope for assistance and peace.

24 HOURS

As a parish we too will join with them and all people of faith throughout the world in prayer. Throughout Lent there is an obvious opportunity to make a concrete effort to pray asking for Mary, the Queen of Peace, to assist us. Put away the hours of social media and take some of that time for prayer and contemplation. We have thirty minutes meditation twice weekly every Tuesday and Friday in our Parish Office Chapel. Come and join us. See full details in the bulletin.

On Friday 18th March commencing 11:00 am we will be having twenty-four hours with the Lord in the Holy Rosary Church. Read this week’s bulletin for more details. Let us open up our hearts and be generous in offering whatever assistance we can in prayer, compassion, finance and open hospitality. Let us join with all our brothers and sisters in Christ and ensure the borders are open to all in need.
