As a Principal, you get to regularly practice your acting skills. A situation I have used that skill set fairly often is when one of my female staff comes to my office to glowingly tell me that they are pregnant! The thought going through my head is, ‘Bugger! I am going to lose this staff member for the next 6-12 months at least.’ At the same time I smile excitedly and gush with congratulations! The amount of time staff can access for Maternity Leave and now Paternity Leave has grown significantly over the years. Despite the dislocation that causes for us at school, it is a really good thing. Last week, I had a day listening to Nathan Wallis who is an expert in the field of ‘Brain Development’. He said that the impact that a good primary carer has on a child in the 1000 days from conception, is an extraordinarily accurate determinant on ‘success’ for that child in later life. I guess that is not rocket science but it's nice to know that the science backs up the experience. He had some great insights on brain development in adolescents. Wallis talks about the four parts of the brain. He has a great way to describe this simply and says that the first three of these, we share with a dog! The fourth, is all the things humans do that a dog can’t – read, analyse, have empathy, consider implications etc. The first three parts of the brain control survival, movement and emotions. Dogs have all of that. The frontal cortex is the complex part. That’s where complex decisions are made, good choices, language is housed etc. He went on to discuss that scientists now know a lot more about brains because in the 90’s they were able to study brains on living people, using MRI machines, rather than only via an autopsy on the brains of people who passed away. So much more information is now available with the ability to study a much larger subject pool. Scientists would now suggest that the human brain is fully developed, on average (and so many things can influence an average), in a person’s early 20’s. This is much later than we previously thought. Going further, it is, on average, earlier for girls than boys – early twenties for girls and mid to later 20s for boys. Wallis spoke to the group I was with about some of the things that good schools can do to assist adolescents in developing their frontal cortex – the place where we are better than dogs! Building positive relationships is crucial. Creating a space where patterns are predictable and safe. Encouraging empathy and compassion for others. I think, at Shalom, our House structure is a real positive in this. Our young people get the benefit of a Head of House and a Pastoral Care teacher who, generally, stay in contact with each student in their House and get to know them, their story and their family over their years at the College. We work hard here to make sure routines are familiar and predictable and, again through our Houses, we give young people the opportunity for practical empathy and compassion. Nathan Wallis has some really good information packaged in a very easy to understand way. I would encourage you to look at his website and click through a few of his short and entertaining video clips.
Afternoon Pick Ups – I know that there are a lot of parents, like me, who hate queuing but, if you choose to pick up your child in the afternoons, there are only two places to do that – the main car park and the Eggmolesse St carpark. Parents who use the car park in front of Administration, please line up in that space and please do not use the car parks beside the Sports Centre or the one designated for College staff nor on the side of Br Hogan Drive. There are all sorts of OH&S reasons for this and I sincerely ask for your cooperation in this area.
Shalom Easter Liturgy will be celebrated this Thursday during our College Assembly which will commence at 11.25am. Parents are welcome to join us for liturgy.
ANZAC Day will be celebrated on the Friday of Week 1 next term. Mr Robinson is again organising this event and I hope that Shalom will be really well represented again at the major local celebrations. Lest we forget. Link below to book in for participation -

Academic Policies and Procedures
It is important to be aware that student assessment is regulated by Shalom’s Academic Policies and Procedures which can be found in the Student Record Book from page 14 to 26. This includes issues surrounding drafting, academic integrity, and non-submission of work.
Flowcharts outlining the processes required for students who miss an exam or wish to request an extension are on pages 16 and 17. Please be aware that extensions need to be applied for in advance of the due date. Drafts are compulsory. Non-submission of a draft may lead to a student being asked to attend a Supplementary Session on Tuesday afternoon. Of particular importance is the requirement for evidence (e.g. a medical certificate) for exams missed in all year 11 and 12 subjects.
Please contact the Dean of Middle School. Mrs Megan Munckton via email Megan_Munckton@rok.catholic.edu.au or the Dean of Senior School, Mrs Patricia Allen via email Patricia_Allen@rok.catholic.edu.au with any questions regarding assessment submission.

Catholic Identity – We Need Your Input!
One of the most important things about being a Catholic school in the 21st century is knowing who we are and what purpose we serve. We need to have a clear understanding of our role as a Catholic school. To assist with this and as an important part of our School Improvement process, Shalom College is participating in a Catholic Identity survey which is conducted by Leuven University in Belgium. The research project is aimed at assisting us with understanding how our Catholic identity is expressed in work and practice as well as supporting plans to further enhance our Catholic Identity for the future. All staff and students will participate in the survey at school. We would also like to give parents a voice by inviting and encouraging you to take part in the survey, which will be conducted online and responses remain anonymous.
Project Compassion
During the 40 days of Lent, which starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Holy Thursday, Catholics around the world take part in fasting, prayer and almsgiving. In the Christian tradition, the forty days originated from Jesus’ forty days and nights in the wilderness. Ever since, people have followed this in a variety of ways, giving up specific items (abstaining) or having meat-free days during Lent. Almsgiving refers to the act of giving food, money or other donations to support vulnerable people. One way this generosity can be expressed is through donating to Caritas’ Project Compassion. While donation boxes are present in each House area, donations online are also welcome.

Masses
Gathering as a community to participate in Mass is central to being Catholic. As a Catholic School, we provide opportunities for students and staff to participate in Masses, regardless of their own faith background or none. Therefore, each House will join with another, to celebrate a House Mass during one of their timetabled Assembly times in Term 2 or Term 3.
Each Religious Education class will also cohost a Wednesday morning Mass at 8am in our chapel. This Mass occurs during term time and is a Parish Mass, so it is open to all. The Mass finishes before the 8.40am bell. Religious Education teachers will email a notice to families prior to their allocated Mass, and we encourage attendance. Upcoming Masses will be hosted by our year 11 students.

Our Lingiari Quiet Achiever this Term is Cameron W.
Lingiari Year 12 student Cameron W is a perfect example of a student who is quiet and who achieves wonderfully well. His grades in all his subjects are a clear reflection of a student who works hard and does their best to achieve the most they can with their talents. Outside of the classroom, Cameron is a committed and helpful member of the college’s music department, where he plays a variety of brass instruments in several bands and also is a member of a choir.
In Lingiari House Cameron is a quiet yet very effective leader. Whenever an event is coming up, Cameron always quietly and discretely asks if there is any way he can help. He has been a terrific Buddy for Collette R (last year and this year) along with the other younger students in LI2 and quietly extends that kind and caring nature to many other students in Lingiari House who may need help or a quiet word of encouragement. Indeed, his quiet, respectful and thoughtful approach to others is very much in keeping with our House patron Vincent Lingiari, who always sought to help others whilst never wanting to make himself the centre of attention.
If you would like to submit any sporting achievements about your child/children along with a photo, please email your submissions to Simon_Gills@rok.catholic.edu.au

OPEN GIRLS QISSN TEAM VS ST JAMES COLLEGE
The Open Girls QISSN Team travelled to St James College in Brisbane last week to have a hit-out with the St James girls for practice games in preparation for the 2025 QISSN Carnival this year.
It was quality netball that allowed our girls to play around with combinations and develop their connections with each other. The St James crew are such talented athletes and gave it to us physically, but showed skill and grace with their clean-style of play and good sportsmanship.

Although the St James Girls got up in both games, we had some beautiful passages of play that highlighted our talents and we now know that we have a lot more growth in us. We thoroughly enjoyed our time at St James and hope to make it a regular event each year... and the get-away was perfect for our team-building endeavours.

This Term your son or daughter will be involved in an outdoor education camp, held at Chaverim. The camps will be in House Groups, so the students will go out with their Head of House. Students will participate in outdoor education activities as the camp is part of a three-year program.
These Outdoor Education programs aim to provide an additional approach to the personal and spiritual development of your child and the greater Shalom community. This three-year program has specific objectives designed to provide.
- An atmosphere of cooperation between students, which can be applied at school, in the family and on the sports field. This may be characterized by cooperation, encouragement and concern for fellow students.
- Knowledge, skills and attitudes that contribute to a sense of responsibility, self-reliance, cooperation and harmony within oneself, with other people, and with the natural environment.
- Opportunities for participants to develop knowledge, low level skills and attitudes for participation in a number of outdoor pursuits.
- Knowledge, skills and attitudes towards a ‘minimum impact ethic’ consistent with the environment in which activities take place.
Each participant involved in the program will be given the opportunity to:
- “Look into the mirror” to see how their behaviours, both good and bad, impact their fellow participants.
- Participate in physically and mentally challenging activities while remaining safe on physical, mental and emotional levels.
- Experience and practice Christian values by living and working together in an open and encouraging atmosphere.
- Develop low level skills in a number of outdoor activities as well as a basic understanding of the associated equipment and safety precautions.
- Experience achievement in a non-competitive ‘win-win’ environment.
The camp also gives the teacher and students the opportunity to get to know each other well.
NO PHONES ARE ALLOWED ON THESE OUTDOOR EDUCATION CAMPS AT CHAVERIM.
The staff in charge will collect phones at the start of camp and return them just before 3.00 pm on day three. Alternatively, keep the phone at home for safe keeping.
I am sure the students will survive without their phones for 3 days and then they can focus on the outdoor education opportunities. If students need to call home for any reason the staff will let them use the phone at the Chaverim office.
The students will be transported to Chaverim by the College bus on the first day of camp. Students will need to be at school by 8.30 am the morning of the camp; they will return to the College at approximately 2.45 pm in time to catch the bus etc on the third day of camp.
Please find attached:
- Camp Program
- Equipment List - Clothes should be functional and suitable for outdoor and adventure activities and provide adequate protection from the elements. Camp is not a time to be fashion conscious; clothes need to be very practical. Students are also to be reminded that Chaverim is a Shalom College campus and all the usual College expectations apply. The wearing of unnecessary jewellery, make-up and inappropriate clothing is not permitted.
- Administration of Medication to Students form - if your child requires medication while on Camp please complete the form and hand it to your Teacher prior to departing on Camp.
Please login to Parent Lounge to give permission for your child to attend the Camp.
Once there click on the ‘Events and Payments’ tab and you will find a link to Year 8 Camp. Here you will be able to give permission for your child to attend, as well as view details about the camp. You will also be asked to review and verify that your child’s medical details are correct.
To check your child’s medical information is current, please click on the ‘student details’ tab and go to ‘medical details’. Please make sure that the following sections are completed so that your child can participate in all activities on camp.
- Can Swim 25m
- Tetanus Up-To-Date
- Medicare Number
In the ‘medical conditions’ section, click ‘add new’ and you will see a drop-down box and notes section where you can also note any dietary requirements, sleeping issues and other details that you feel may be relevant to your child’s well-being at the camp. Once you are happy with the information you have provided, please click ‘verify’.
Please also check your contact details and phone numbers are current, as we will be using this information to contact you if needed.
It is very important that all information in the Parent Lounge is current as teachers will use this information in case of an emergency and to support the wellbeing of your child.
If you require assistance with Parent Lounge login, please contact the office. If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact me here at the College by phone or email.

Today we farewelled 40 of our year 11 English students who are setting out to Storyfest Writer’s Festival at Somerset College on the Gold Coast.
Storyfest was initially known as the Somerset Celebration of Literature and was founded by Gold Coast residents in 1993. These visionaries could see that not only the students at Somerset College would benefit, but the wider community as well, culturally as well as contributing to tourism.
The first festival was made possible by the collaborate efforts of five key people: the then College Librarian Gail Parr, Head of English Lorraine Pilgrim, ABC journalist Karen Berkman, Graeme Gardiner and Wendy O’Regan – and parents of the College.
These founders were able to secure such authors as the award-winning Peter Carey and international best-seller Colleen McCullough. From the huge success of this first festival grew the annual celebration of literature that it has become today, over 30 years later.
In 2022, Storyfest was taken to the regional town of Longreach for a two-day festival called Storyfest Out West, and on the back of that success, the organisation is making plans to extend much further in the years to come.
Our excited students are accompanied this year by English Department Head, Louise Hume, English teachers, George Church and Kylee Johnstone, and Classroom Support Assistant, Sharon Cahill.
Amazing things happen when adults come together to drive projects that support our young people’s enthusiasm for literary excellence!
Keep your eyes out for information regarding the upcoming Shalom College First Draft Writer’s Festival for our 7-10 cohorts in August.
