Two Friday’s ago, we celebrated World Teachers’ Day. It got a bit swamped with all else that was happening here at that time. I love being a teacher and as I think back on that group of people who made a real difference in my life, a few of those were my teachers. They made a real difference for me. The story below is not a new one but, not surprisingly, I really like it.
Making A Difference
The dinner guests were sitting around the table discussing life. One man, a CEO, decided to reveal the problem with education. He argued, ‘What’s a kid going to learn from someone who decided that his best option in life was to become a school teacher?’
He reminded the other dinner guests what’s often said about teachers: ‘Those who can, do. Those who can’t, teach.’ To stress his point he said to another guest, ‘You’re a teacher, Susan. Be honest. What do you make?’
Susan, who had a reputation for honesty and frankness replied, ‘You want to know what I make? I make kids work harder than they ever thought they could. I make a C+ feel like the winner of the country’s highest honour.
I make kids sit through 40 minutes of study in absolute silence. You want to know what I make? I made kids wonder. I make them question. I make them criticise. I make them apologise and mean it.
I make them write. I make them read, read, read. I make them do their best in maths and perfect their final drafts in English.
I make them understand that if you have the brains, and follow your heart, and if someone ever tries to judge you by what you make, you must pay no attention because they just didn’t learn.’
Susan paused and then continued. ‘You want to know what I make?’ I make a difference. What do you make?’
Really sad – again. Last Wednesday, Ryan Hickling (Walsh Snr 2022) died in a vehicle accident on the Bundaberg – Childers road. Ryan was a really nice young man at Shalom and we are devastated to hear that news for his family. Also recently, Mr Ian Seaby passed away. Ian was a long time and early member of the Shalom staff.
Yr 7 Orientation Afternoon is on Tuesday afternoon. We are looking to welcome 276 current Year 6 students who will join us next year. Enrolments for all grades next year are very tight. This term, we have welcomed 21 new students to Shalom.

Learning Attributes Yr 7/8 Rotation Subjects – Published Week 6
A reminder that in 2024, Shalom College has changed the way we give feedback on ‘learning attributes’ of our students to parents. Please note that the upcoming End-of-Semester Report cards will no longer show Application and Behaviour as a result.
Instead, teachers have been giving feedback through Sia on the learning behaviours of students in each of their classes, as well as PC classes. These learning attributes will be published throughout Week 6 in Term 4 for the Yr7/8 rotation subjects that occur in this term only. All other subjects have published the learning attributes throughout the year and are updating them as necessary.
Year 12 External Exams
External Exams for Yr 12 General Subjects will occur over the period from Monday 21 October – Friday 8 November.
Attached is some important information about this time including:
- External Assessment Timetable

- Student Expectations During Exam Block
Could parents and students please familiarise themselves with these important documents in preparation for the External Exam period?
Please note that normal classes continue during Week 1-3 of Term 4 (30 Sep – 18 Oct), however students need only attend school for the exams they are sitting during the External Exam Block. Students who are required to complete outstanding work may also be required to attend school during the External Exam block as organised by the relevant classroom teacher.
Good luck with your study and your exams!
Yr 11 Exam Block – 20 November – 22 November
Yr 11 students will participate in an exam block from Wednesday 20 - Friday 22 November. Students participating in this exam block will begin Unit 3 assessment. This assessment is summative and as such will contribute towards the ATAR score. The Exam Timetable for this exam block is attached. Students need only attend school for the exams that they are sitting in this period.
During the exam block, students not involved in exams are expected to be involved in home study. Students who are behind in their schoolwork may also be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.
Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.

Woorabinda Immersion
On Friday 25 October, 12 of our Year 10 students and four staff members headed out to Woorabinda after spending Thursday night at The Cathedral College in Rockhampton.
We were warmly welcomed by Sr Cecilia Prest, a Missionary Franciscan Sister, who has lived in Woorabinda for 22 years. Her role is to be a presence and empower the people through compassion and non-judgmental acceptance of everyone.
Uncle Milton, from one of the original Woorabinda families showed us around explaining the history and the sites of the town after he welcomed us to country.
We began the day with a grounding ceremony and met a few of the locals. They were all extremely accepting of us in their community. We even had one local who stopped to say hello but ended up joining us for the day.
Uncle Milton then took us to a traditional Birthing Site, out in the bush quite a way from town, where the babies were birthed right up until approximately 20 years ago. There used to be a running stream where the babies could be cleaned after birth. Unfortunately, this has since dried up, but the creek is still there. Boys are not allowed to enter this sacred site as it was ‘women’s business’. The girls were able to sit and meditate at this peaceful place for a short amount of time, which was for some quite a spiritual experience.
We also saw an old windmill that had been erected and dug out by hand by the people who had been relocated to Woorabinda against their will. They had to dig through the rock, and we considered the discomfort they would have experienced, without any pay as compensation.
We left Woorabinda at 2.45pm for the long drive home. We had a fantastic time and really appreciate the time both Sr Cecilia and Uncle Milton took to teach us more about Indigenous Culture and Spirituality. We look forward to going back with another group of Year 10’s next year.

The Adams all-rounders are Madeline S and Lucy W, both of these girls show immense maturity and respect, two things we value here in Adams House. Maddie and Lucy have stepped up since the year 12s have left and are willing to help out where needed. They always conduct themselves with a happy and positive attitude. I love seeing the enthusiastic approach they show to all things Adams. Keep up the great work girls.

Queensland Representative School Sport Futsal
Congratulations to Bailey I, Georgia C, Lilana B and Cohen P who all represented Wide Bay at the Queensland Representative School Sport Futsal 15-16yrs State Championships in Toowoomba last week and weekend (Thursday 17 October to Sunday 20 October 2024).
The students played ten fast paced Futsal games over four full days of competition held at The Glennie School and USQ in Toowoomba.
ROK Superfinal - Karting
Recently Ky B competed at the ROK Superfinal, Lonato, South Garda, Italy. He had 2 days of practice to try and learn the difficult track. Unfortunately, the 2 days practice was under beautiful, sunny conditions and the competition was miserable and rained most of the time. Ky qualified 16th in his group, 46th overall out of 101 drivers entered in the Junior ROK category.
Heat 1 - started out of position 18, finished 15th (sustained some damage to the front end of his kart)
Heat 2 - started out of position 18 , finished 7th
Heat 3 - started out of position 18, finished 8th
Heat 4 - started out of position 18, finished 7th
Heat 5 - started out of position 18, finished 10th
To gain a position in the prefinal, you had to finish in the top 72. Ky was ranked 24th out of 101 drivers.
Prefinal - started out of position 12th, finished 7th
The final consisted of the top 36 drivers. Ky's ranking improved to 20th.
Final - started out of position 20th, finished 12th (13th with penalty)
Ky had mega speed in the final, setting one of the fastest times. He had a great result considering 100+ drivers for the weekend. This was Ky's first race in South Garda, Lonato. Big thanks goes to Energy Corse Racing Karts Italy, Mattia his mechanic and Angus his driver coach.

Year 12 Sport and Recreation Studies
The Year 12 Sport and Recreation Studies classes completed a lawn bowling Unit this Term. Throughout the Unit, Brothers Lawn Bowls provided equipment and tutoring to the students. We would like to express our appreciation for the generous donation of their time and experience. The students certainly gained a sound understanding of the game and an appreciation of the level of skill needed to be consistently successful. All students received a certificate to acknowledge that they have gained junior bowler accreditation and a Brothers Lawn Bowls pin. Thank you again to all involved.

The Can-Do-Crew for SCASA has been working with residents at Gracehaven Retirement Village this term making Halloween decorations and chatting non-stop! On Thursday 31 October, our Shalomies hosted a Halloween party at Gracehaven which was the very first Halloween party that most of the residents had ever been to....and they said it was the BEST Halloween party ever!!!
Our fabulous Can-Do-Crew has doubled in numbers since Term 3 and the residents are loving the crazy and kind energy that students bring to their Thursday afternoons.
We are now about to begin making Christmas decorations together in preparation for our end of year Christmas Concert!

It has been another a big year, where has it gone? It is already time to start thinking about putting up the Christmas tree.
We are tired, feeling the effects of a busy year and looking forward to a rest.
The college has a wonderful Safety Culture, it is inspiring to see the comradery between families.
During these last few weeks, it is even more important to check in with one another and focus on getting to the break safe and healthy.
Merry Christmas!

The final winner from our anthology of selected works called Shalom’s Literary Wonders is the runner-up in the year 11-12 short story category: Callum M.
Callum offers us a compelling story full of emotion and allegory. He makes the connection between the brittleness of mirror glass and the fragility of the human psyche that has become enshrouded in painful memories.
The mirror is used in literature as a vehicle to imbue psychological reflection as well as physical and remains an intricate illustration of identity and self-consciousness. It is often used to reflect oppositional themes of reality and illusion, honesty and deceit, reason and chaos, egotism and self-deprecation, equilibrium and incongruence.

Stewardship Renewal
As a Stewardship Parish, the Bundaberg Catholic Parish is involved in more than ninety outreaches to all in our community.
Parishioners discern their gifts and talents and then offer these for the pastoral care, support, and service of others.
The outreaches vary from visiting the sick and housebound to grounds and property maintenance; from proclaiming the scripture at Church liturgies to support of relatives and friends of recently deceased; from church cleaning to providing hospitality.
Our schools and College are the educational and faith formation arm of our parish as are St Vincent de Paul, Oz Care, and Catholic Care our charitable and social arm while the Mater hospital is our health arm. Together we strive to make a difference in our community in whatever way our gifts can lead us.
During the next few weeks, we will be renewing our commitment to serve, to be good stewards of the gifts we have been given.
We ask you to join us as together we live out our Christian commitment and our Parish Vision – “to go out, empowered by the Holy Spirit, to share God’s Love respectfully, with all people”.
