Recently, following an interesting conversation I had with someone I know well, I was accused of being ‘Woke’ as a way of ending the discussion. We often hear that term bandied about, usually as a negative description. I have been really unclear on what ‘Woke’ means. So, I asked ChatGPT. Clever thing that it is, it gave me the following description –
‘The term “woke” has its origins in African-American English where it refers to being aware of systemic racism and social injustice…The term “woke” gained widespread use in 2014 after the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri, and the subsequent protests about police brutality and racial inequality. The term was used to describe individuals who were aware of and engaged in social justice issues, particularly around race and racism…The term has become somewhat controversial, with some people embracing it as a positive term and others using it as a pejorative.”
If that’s a valid description, I’m pretty happy to be ‘woke’! Isn’t it even
more worrying for us as a society, that those who are passionate about social justice and the care for those who are marginalised, have a word put on them that is widely understood as being bad? If the description above is accurate, I hope that Shalom is widely described as a ‘woke school’. I hope our young people will be ‘woke’. I’m pretty sure that Jesus of Nazareth was pretty ‘woke’ as well.
The 2023 Catholic Schools’ Race Day is on this Saturday. Tickets sold out a few weeks ago and, I’m sure, it will be another great day. A big thank you to all of our sponsors and the organising committee. Mr Peter O’Beirne does a fantastic job in leading that committee and shouldering much of the effort of organisation.
The Parents & Friends Association has been re-structured. The need to raise money for the school and to deal with numerous fundraising ventures is no longer a part of the Shalom P & F. We are looking for it to be a venue that looks at providing parents a chance to input and learn a bit more about the development of young people at Shalom. The first meeting for the year is Tuesday 14 March at 5.30 pm in the staff room. We no longer need to have monthly meetings but we will offer these gatherings as a chance for parents to provide feedback about issues of interest. Please come along – no one will try to rope you into a job!!

NAPLAN Reporting Changes
In addition to changes to the timing of NAPLAN this year, there will also be changes to the way NAPLAN results are reported. New proficiency standards with four levels of achievement for each year level will replace the previous 10 band structure and national minimum standard. The new proficiency standard for each year level has been described as “challenging but reasonable” by the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA). The change is intended to make it clearer to parents and schools when a child has, or has not, demonstrated proficiency for their stage of schooling.
The bands for each year level are:
• Exceeding
• Strong
• Developing
• Needs additional support
Students in the Exceeding and Strong categories have demonstrated proficiency consistent with their stage of schooling. Students in Developing and Needs additional support categories have not yet demonstrated proficiency consistent with their stage of schooling. Student reports will continue to show the national average and the range of achievement for the middle 60 per cent of students in their year level, allowing comparison of a child’s achievement against these measures.
The changes will also impact the comparison of current and historical data. Results from 2008–2022 cannot be directly compared with the 2023 results.
For more information on this change please see the attached fact sheet from ACARA.

NAPLAN testing will begin on Wednesday 15 March with the Writing Test. The remaining tests are spaced over the next week and a half. Please see the timetable below.

Study for Success: Retrieval Practice
Helping your child develop an effective study schedule and strategies is a vital part of supporting their education. As students progress through their schooling the need to allow dedicated time for revision as well as homework and assignments becomes more important. This week’s Study for Success tip is to encourage your child to include activities that practice retrieving information as part of their study. Practicing retrieving information can increase long-term learning. A classic retrieval activity is to use flashcards.
Students can create flashcards the ‘old fashioned way’ using index cards. Cards can be set up in many ways, depending on the content to be studied. Some suggestions include - key vocabulary; people/characters; formulas; question and answer; cause and effect; chronology and dates and thematic concepts.
Students can also take advantage of online tools to create flashcards. Three great places to start are:
- Quizlet https://quizlet.com/features/flashcards
- Cram https://www.cram.com/
- Brainscape https://www.brainscape.com/
A variety of apps for Smartphones and tablets are also available.
For more on using flashcards as part of effective retrieval practice read the following article: https://www.retrievalpractice.org/strategies/2019/11/18/flashcards
Earphones (not Bluetooth) are compulsory for NAPLAN testing. Students who present to the test session with bluetooth earphones or without earphones, will be sold a set - $6 charged to the students’ account. We urge all students to keep the earphones in their pencil case ready for testing sessions. The uniform shop has a small supply of earphones for $6. Earphones must have a 3.5mm standard jack. See images below. Wireless/bluetooth earphones (e.g. Apple air pods) are not compatible.
If you wish to withdraw your student from NAPLAN testing, please contact Megan Munckton, Middle School Coordinator, megan_munckton@shalomcollege.com

SIA – LOG ON NOW! GET THE PHONE APP!
‘Someone is sitting in the shade today because someone planted a tree a long time ago.’ -Warren Buffet
A parent’s role in the education of their child is vital. Student outcomes will be maximised when parents and teachers are both involved in their child’s education and have positive interactions. Sia is a fantastic way for parents to be fully informed about student progress, assessment due dates, news items, upcoming events, assessment results etc.
Sia, and the Shalom phone app, have been available to parents since the beginning of 2022. Currently, our parent login rate is slightly lower than the end of last year. We would like all our parents to be successfully logged into Sia as soon as possible. Attached in the link below is a Parent “Everything You Need To Know About Sia’ Guide which includes how to log in for the first time. The phone app is super-convenient – a must-have for parents!
Our IT team will have sent the login details for Sia to all new parents to the school at the beginning of the year. If you have misplaced these details, or are having technical difficulties, please contact our Shalom IT department via email at shalomit@shalomcollege.com or phone 41558131 during office hours 8am - 3.30pm Monday to Friday.

We gathered last Thursday for the Induction of our Year 12 cohort. The idea of doing this as a community is to recognise the leadership role that all students take on in their final year at the college. The 2023 theme is ‘Gifts’ – the sincere gift of self to others. It is inspired by Fratelli tutti, the Encyclical of Pope Francis on fraternity and social friendship. The clear message within this letter is that we are all involved in the construction of a better world. Our hope is that by sharing their own unique gifts, our students, both individually and collectively, will contribute to our community in unique ways, leaving us stronger by doing so. The senior badges that they received, are a sign that they accept the responsibilities that come with servant leadership. We all look forward to watching them succeed.

2023 Immunisation Reminder Program - Year 7 Round 1 & Year 10
The Year 7 and 10 students that returned a signed and completed consent card earlier this term will be vaccinated during school on Tuesday 7 and Wednesday 8 March (note, due to large number of Year 7 students this clinic is now over two days). Thursday 9 March is the Year 10s.
The vaccinations will be conducted by a team of authorised and registered nurses from OzCare.
Parents are encouraged to ensure their children have breakfast on the morning of the vaccination.
Ozcare will contact all guardians directly if a student (with a completed and returned consent form) did not attend the Shalom clinic session.
For further information about the School Immunisation Program please call 13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) or visit www.health.qld.gov.au/immunisation or click on the following links; immunisation through the school program

Australia’s Unusual Jobs!
1. Senior submarine cook
When the Royal Australian Navy advertised that it was willing to pay up to $200,000 for senior submarine cooks, it attracted worldwide media attention. It seems that there aren't too many individuals with the cooking skills and organisational ability to produce morale-boosting food in a cramped galley. While you'll need to learn your submariner skills elsewhere, you can get the ball rolling by doing a pre-apprenticeship cooking course. Click here for more information.
2. Construction Diver
Australia is the middle of a resources boom and many of those resources are being extracted from under the sea, necessitating the building and maintenance of offshore platforms by divers. Construction diver employers prefer to hire those with a metals and engineering background, so doing a TAFE course in fitting, plumbing, or welding will increase your employability. Check out Construction Diving Company -Dive Co to see what they do.
3. Crop Duster Pilot
With Australia fast becoming Asia's food bowl, there's lots of work for pilots who can spray pesticides on the nation's crops. A crop Duster Pilot’s skills are diverse and they are also known to non-growing season dousing wildfires for firefighting crews, surveying land, flying banners over sporting events, or working as flight instructors. Read about them here
4. Shark Tagger
Those tags that allow marine biologists to track the movements of great white sharks don't magically attach themselves. If you're willing to haul a shark onto a boat and help with the surgical implantation of a tracking device before throwing it back in the water, you probably won't find yourself competing for jobs with too many others. The Australian Government's shark mitigation strategy has a strong evidence-based focus, backed by science produced from shark tagging. Read about JCU Marine Biology courses here
5. Roadkill Collector
Ever wonder what happens to the dead possum by the side of the road? Roadkill collectors are often found in the more remote areas of our country, and they sometimes work for councils or as Park Rangers too. If you can handle picking up roadkill, sorting it out, and disposing of it properly, this job is for you. Sometimes police officers are assigned to remove deceased animals from roadways, but they don’t have time to pick up each carcass. Learn about the Qld Police recruitment process here
Use the My Careers platform to research your ideal job!
My Careers
This week every Year 10, 11 and 12 student received an email from our subscription to My Careers. Through collaborative research and development with industry professionals, My Careers has created an innovative and engaging program that we hope our students take advantage of. We would encourage conversations and engagement with the program at home.
Time is running out to register for the CQU Year 12 Uni Day.

What to expect:
Students will choose two study areas of interest and participate in interactive, hands-on sessions delivered by CQU teaching staff. On the day, students will receive a personalised timetable to navigate the day just like uni students. They'll also:
• Learn about our early offer options and other pathways to uni.
• Discover study support and scholarship options.
• Get to ask our friendly CQU staff and students questions.
• Meet students from other schools with similar interests.
Students who are not ATAR eligible, are concerned about not receiving an ATAR, or not meeting an ATAR requirement, are welcome to attend.
