I expect that if I asked students at Shalom, or their parents, to summarise what Christianity is about, I would get back statements like,
“‘Jesus was kind and wants us to be kind’
‘Love one another’
‘Treat others as you would like to be treated’"
These beliefs are a part of the fabric of Christian faith, but they are not the whole story. We were reminded by yesterday’s Gospel from Matthew that Jesus calls us to more than this. In that reading, Jesus reminded his followers, us, that ‘anyone who wants to save his life, may lose it..take up your cross and follow me..what will it gain a man if he wins the whole world but ruins his life?’
“Six prisoners were found to have escaped. Retribution was swift and brutal. Randomly selected, 12 people were hanged. As the other prisoners watched their twelve fellow inmates gasp for breath, someone in the crowd cried out, “Where is God?” silence descended on the yard. The twelve bodies were now in spasm, jerking and struggling for breath. As everyone watched, the voice came again, this time more urgently, “Where is God now?”
“My God,” another voice yelled back, “My God is hanging there.”
School TV is a wonderful resource for parents paid for by our P & F. There is a link on our website. It has an amazing range of content designed to help parents do their job well. One of the more recent ones is on the issue of ‘Consent’. There are others on Bullying, Raising Boys & Raising Girls. Excellent resources on dangerous substances and mental wellbeing. Please check it out. As parents, we need all the help we can get.

Dance Night, not surprisingly, was fabulous again. I keep getting blown away by the level of talent we have at Shalom. This wouldn’t happen without amazing Shalom staff who are prepared to give of their time, far over and above what they are paid for. Our performing Arts staff are just out of this world.

Subject Selection Forms for 2024
Could any Year 8 or Year 9 students who have not returned the signed paper copy of their subject selections for 2024 please do so. We are now in the process cross checking these with the electronic submissions.
The online portal for subject selections has now closed. If your child has not selected their subjects for 2024 online please have them see Mrs Norris or Mr Maher at Student Reception.
Year 12 Mock and External Assessments
Mr Maher met with all Year 12’s last week to go over the school’s expectations during the mock and external exam blocks. All information required for both the Mock and External Assessment is available in SIA:
https://schoolbox.shalomcollege.com/homepage/6641
We strongly recommend that all students engage with these documents before they commence their examinations.
QTAC registration – ATAR score and QTAC Application Portal
Year 12 students have received an information sheet on how to:
1. Register with QTAC to receive their ATAR score
2. Create their QTAC Applications account
At present only a small number of students who are ATAR eligible have registered to receive their score. If you child is eligible to receive an ATAR score could you please encourage them to register.
If you child is planning on applying for university through QTAC they will need to firstly create an account with QTAC.
The attached ‘how to’ sheet has explanatory steps to complete both the registration for their ATAR score and how to create their QTAC application account.

Year 11 Exam Block & Year 12 Mock Exam Block
Attached is the Year 11 Exam Block Timetable (Wednesday 6 - Monday 11 September) and the Year 12 Mock Exam Block Timetable (Monday 4 - Friday 15 September). Students need only attend school for the exams they are to sit during this time, however, students who are behind in their schoolwork may be required to attend school to complete outstanding work. If this is required, these arrangements will be communicated by individual class teachers.
Please remember that normal school rules regarding uniform and behaviour continue through the exam block. These expectations are outlined in the attached documents.
We wish our students all the best with their studies.

Understanding Dr. Hunter’s Sentence Types to Enhance Writing Skills: Part 2
In the second part of our series on Dr. Ian Hunter's Eight Sentence Types, we delve into four more structures that promote creativity and critical thinking in your child's writing. By incorporating these sentence types into their compositions, students can elevate their storytelling and add complexity to their work.
5. Verb Beginnings:
- Starting a sentence with a verb adds energy and action.
- ing ending verbs are particularly effective for this sentence structure.
Encourage your child to begin sentences with verbs to create more dynamic and engaging writing.
Examples:
- Calculating the data reveals interesting trends.
- Demonstrating proper form enhances exercise efficiency.
- Comparing data sets highlights significant differences.
6. Explore the Subject:
- This sentence type follows a specific formula: Subject + "which" (if it's a thing) or "who" (if it's a person) + interesting point + what you wanted to say.
- It prompts a deeper exploration of the subject matter and promotes critical thinking.
Encourage your child to utilise this sentence structure when elaborating on a topic or making connections.
Examples:
- The scientific method, which guides research, ensures rigorous investigation.
- The human body, a complex system, adapts to physical stressors.
- Nutrition, a critical aspect of the training routine, fuels athletes' strength and recovery.
7. Prepositional:
- Prepositional sentences begin with a prepositional phrase at the start.
- A prepositional phrase begins with a preposition and ends in a noun, pronoun, or noun phrase.
- Prepositions are little words indicating movement or position. Some examples of prepositions are “in,” “on,” “at,” “through,” “across,” “over,” “up,” or “beside.”
Encourage your child to experiment with prepositional sentences to vary the sentence structure and add complexity to their writing.
Examples:
- At the gym, participants engaged in high-intensity interval training.
- Over the course of the study, significant improvements were observed.
- Beside the river, anglers enjoyed a day of fishing and relaxation.
8. Paired-Double:
- Paired-double sentences contain two independent clauses joined by a conjunction like "and" or "but."
- Independent clauses are self-contained sentences that make sense on their own.
Encourage your child to use paired-double sentences to express contrasting ideas or combine related thoughts.
Examples:
- The experiment yielded valuable data, but further analysis is needed.
- Participants followed the training program diligently, and they saw progress.
- Understanding scientific principles is fundamental, and it applies to real-world scenarios.
By incorporating these sentence types into their writing, students can unlock their creativity and express their ideas with depth and sophistication. These techniques will enrich their writing skills and enable them to connect more effectively with their audience.

Children’s Book Week
It all began in 1945 when the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) was founded. These were days when children’s books were not abundant as they are now, and their authors were not well known. In 1946 the CBCA established annual awards to promote the growth of this sector of Australian literature, celebrating books of high literary and artistic quality. This fostered an increase in the production of stories rich in Australian social history and told in Australian voices.
The CBCA awards are presented to books of literary merit, for their contribution to Australian children’s literature. A panel of experts selects books in age-related categories that meet the vision of the CBCA which is to create a community that celebrates quality Australian literature for young people.
Annually, throughout Australia, children and books are brought together to celebrate Book Week. A program of activities plays out in schools and libraries all around the nation creating engagement, entertainment, and memories. Most parents will remember an episode or two of the last-minute Book Week parade costume.
This year at the Shalom junior library, library staff in collaboration with the English faculty hosted lots of fun and games at each afternoon teatime through the week, except for Shalom Day on Thursday.
Shalom Literary Wonders
The English department/Library Literary Committee have also run the annual Shalom Literary Wonders writing competition this term. Australian Kart Championships
Congratulations to Ky B who recently competed at the Australian Kart Championships Round 5 in Melbourne. He qualified second fastest and managed 3 heat wins and a second position.
In the final, he led the race from pole (1st) position. An incident in turn 1 resulted in the race being restarted. Upon restarting the race, Ky exceeded track formation limits and had a penalty imposed post race. This resulted in a 10 second penalty which dropped him into 11th place even though Ky crossed the line in second place.
Ky is building great form in his rookie year in the KA2 class (High performance, Junior 12-15 year age group) finishing 4th in the 2023 Australian Championship.
Ky will build off this success with some exciting international opportunities to come soon.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
If you are interested in volunteering at our College Tuckshop, we would love for you to indicate your availability and book a shift following the link below.
The booking system helps to accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and have a day here or there throughout the year. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 4155 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2-3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
The Shalom Markets are open every Sunday 6am-midday. Come along to purchase your fresh fruit and vegetables, local food products and handmade items.
