What are you looking forward to this Christmas? I hope and pray that for every member of the Shalom community, it will be a time that is filled with love for those near and far.
Jesus, born in Bethlehem, poor and on the run, lived a life marked by compassion, outreach, freedom and irresponsible inclusion. May something of all of that permeate our lives and families.
As we come to the end of 2023, we have already farewelled our Year 12s. We also farewell a number of staff and we wish them well. The list of those departing Shalom are contained in the document attached. I would like to pay particular attention to two of our very foundation members of staff, Ms Jenny Wedemeyer and Ms Christine Rasmussen who retire from our staff at the end of this year. Both Jenny and Chris were at Shalom from the first day the College opened its doors. Both have taught and influenced thousands of young people. Theirs is an incredible contribution for which we are very grateful.

Young Drivers – one of our parents shared with me last week a bit of a scary story. Their young and inexperienced P Plate driver found themselves followed by a vehicle continuing flashing their lights. This young man pulled over thinking there must be some sort of emergency only to be threatened by the driver with a lump of timber who demanded any money that the young man had on him. He walked away with a $2 coin! This could have been a lot worse. I guess the moral of that story for all of us with young drivers is to remind them to just be wary and to keep doors and windows locked in situations that are unusual or unexpected.

Thank you from Woorabinda
A huge thank you from Sr Cecilia Prest from the Woorabinda Mission to everyone who donated to our call for linen, cutlery, dress ups etc. Woorabinda is an Aboriginal Community in our Diocese and Sr Cecilia, who is alone in her ministry, was so very appreciative of all the donations she received.
Sister Cecilia has been in Woorabinda for approximately 20 years, as she says, being a ‘presence’ in the community. She has built up a store in her time there and provides new and secondhand items which are donated by various people and groups, sometimes bought by her if there are items in need that she is unable to source through donations. The shop is open on Thursdays and people from the community can come and buy what they need. As Frederic Ozanam who founded St Vincent de Paul says, ‘This is not a handout, it is a hand up’ and they pride themselves in being able to support themselves.
Sandra Freeman and I drove out to Woorabinda to deliver the donations on Monday 20 and Tuesday 21 November. We had a huge ute-load of donations from parishioners and our school community as well as toys from our Giving Tree Prayer Assembly. This was a great opportunity to continue to support Sr Cecilia in her mission to the people of Woorabinda.
Linen is an ongoing necessity - tablecloths, sheets, towels - as are children’s football boots, cutlery sets and at Christmas time, gifts for the families who have no transport to travel to Rockhampton to purchase their Christmas presents.
Shalom and the Catholic Parish of Bundaberg will continue to support Woorabinda Mission, and we are planning two trips a year to deliver needed goods.
If, at any time, you wish to support this worthy cause, please let me know and we can deliver your donations when we go.
Thank you once again for your very generous donations.
Wishing you all blessings for a very Happy and Holy Christmas.
Giving Tree Wrap-Up
Besides the sensational number of gifts donated for the Giving Tree, the total amount raised in cash donations was approximately $3500, along with another $1500 in gift cards. The St Vincent de Paul Society is highly appreciative of this effort and have sent a letter of thanks to the staff, teachers, students, and families. The letter also provides information regarding how the donations are used to help our local community. Click the link below to read their thank you letter.

Emily P is this week’s quiet achiever for Walsh House. She is consistently showcasing her dedication and excellence in her pursuits. Despite her quiet nature, Emily has made remarkable contributions, participating actively in the Central QLD Schools Rowing Regatta and the Shalom rowing team where she received the Best and Fairest Award for her age for 2023.
Emily is heavily involved and excelling in the Shalom Music Program and completed her Australian Music Examination Board exam. Her notable involvement in events like the Bundaberg Music Eisteddfod, Chamber Strings and Symphony Orchestra member for Shalom does not go unnoticed.
Emily was also a participant in the Wide Bay Reader's Cup, as well as volunteering for orientation afternoon and the Shalom Open Days. Emily has no doubt many highlights which demonstrate her commitment to both academic and extracurricular excellence.
Emily's quiet but impactful presence resonates through her multifaceted contributions, making her an invaluable asset to Walsh House and the wider Shalom community

It has been another busy year and now that it’s drawing to a close, students and staff may want to relax with a few good books. Rather than leave the books locked up like prisoners in the libraries, students and staff can borrow a few to keep over the holiday break and return in the first week of Term 1 2024.
With digital becoming such a prevalent way to access information, fewer textbooks are required so for more effective use of library staff, textbook hire will be closed from Thursday 30 November. Anyone wishing to return books after school breaks up should leave them at the main reception for library staff to collect. The office will close Friday 8 December 2023 and reopen Monday 8 January 2024.
We are looking forward to a new year of exciting literary adventures, in fact Somerset Storyfest planning is already underway.
Best wishes for a happy and safe Christmas and New Year from the Library.

Parent and Carer Tuckshop Volunteers
If you are interested in volunteering at our College Tuckshop, we would love for you to indicate your availability and book a shift following the link below.
The booking system helps to accommodate our very much appreciated regular volunteers, but also families who may not be able to commit on a regular basis and have a day here or there throughout the year. The beauty of this system is that you can select your day and manage your booking, so if something comes up, you can quickly and easily go online to reschedule or cancel. Your booking will generate a confirmation email with links to manage your booking, it can be synched with your calendar and an SMS is sent the day before as a reminder. Of course, we are also here to help - simply contact Shalom College on 4155 8111.
For those of you who are regular volunteers your shifts have already been added to the schedule for this year and you should have received an e-mail for each booked shift.
Shifts last from 2-3 hours (school drop off to around 11.30 am).
No experience required!
The Shalom Markets are open every Sunday 6am-midday. Come along to purchase your fresh fruit and vegetables, local food products and handmade items.
The Shalom Markets will be open EVERY Sunday over Christmas and the New Year, including Sunday 24 December and Sunday 31 December.
Volunteers Required - Markets Tuckshop
We are seeking your help!! We are always in need of new volunteers for the Markets Tuckshop and BBQ.
